LETTER FROM EDITOR Dear Readers, Many television viewers are finding that cable service are lacking quite a bit, not only is the area covered uneven but numerous cable companies do not provide an large range of programming. As a result, they are turning to other alternatives that have more to provide and even cable TV providers that are able to provide high definition programming are only able to do so in exceedingly limited portions. The reason for this is because cable providers lack the technology by which they can provide HDTV scheduling both in terms of quantity and variety. A larger variety of HD programming is however provided by Direct TV and Dish Network, and this is soon gaining a great amount of customer satisfaction. In this regard the Dish Network has gained a lot of popularity with viewers since they are able to offer more than 30 channels of HD scheduling. The DirecTV has a HD package, which provides a huge number of channels, which is even more than what the cable television provides or any other supplier. A viewer can easily add further HD programming to what is provided by the satellite supplier. This can fit the budget of any television viewer as he can add high definition scheduling to any standard package, which is offered to him at a very reasonable price. The standard package also includes a number of viewing choices and e innumerable music channels. By

JAPAN LAUNCHES 5TH SPY SATELLITE
Japan has launched a next-generation spy satellite as part of efforts to beef up its surveillance system against the threat of North Korea's missiles, officials said. An H2A rocket carrying the nations No. 3 Information Gathering Satellite was launched Saturday morning from Tanegashima Space Centre on Tanegashima island, southwestern Japan, the officials said. “We successfully separated the satellite from the rocket and put it into orbit,” said Toshimitsu Ozeki, an official of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which built the rocket. The government-run satellite will replace the first model, with an advanced optical device to distinguish objects on the ground with a resolution of some 60, the officials and local media said. The new satellite will undergo a performance trial for about three months before starting fullyfledged operations, Kyodo News reported. The launch is the nation's latest effort to build an intelligence-gathering system following North Korea's missile launch in 1998 over the Japanese archipelago.

IRAN TO LAUNCH SATELLITE ON ITS OWN BY LATE 2011 Iran plans to launch a communications satellite by late 2011 with no outside help, a top Iranian official has said, after Italy and Russia declined to put it into orbit. The move reflected Tehran's frustration with the two countries as it tries to push ahead with an ambitious space program, which has worried world powers because the same rocket technology used to launch satellites can also be used for military purposes. Israeli media have claimed that the new Iranian satellite, named Misbah, or “Lantern” in Farsi, is a spy satellite. Iran says the satellite, which is to be launched into a low-earth orbit, is to assist in data communication. Telecommunications Minister Reza Taqipour touted the decision to launch the satellite as a show of Iran's progress in space technology. “Our capability to launch a satellite has increased ... we hope to launch Mesbah satellite-2 ourselves” by the end of 2011,Taqipour said, according to the semi-official Fars news agency. Iran launched a domestically made satellite called Omid, or ”Hope” in Farsi using an Iranian rocket for the first time in February. In 2005, its first satellite was launched by Russia, which has been a partner in transferring space technology to Iran along with North Korea and China. The Mesbah satellite was first displayed in 2005. At the time, Iran said it would be launched that year by a Russian Cosmos-3satellite-carrier. Since then, however, there were repeated delays by Russia.

CHINA IN SATELLITE LAUNCH DEALS WITH DEVELOPING NATIONS Excluded from much of the lucrative satellite launching business by technology transfer restrictions, a resource- and influence-hungry China has found its niche: building and launching satellites for developing nations. In the last three months, China signed deals to build and launch satellites for Pakistan, Laos and Bolivia, said Philip Balaam, Asia regional sales and marketing director for Arianespace, one of the world's few commercial satellite launchers, which is 30 per cent owned by France's EADS. Earlier this year, China also signed a deal to launch a satellite for Nigeria to replace one it built and launched for the African nation in 2007, but which later ran into technical issues. China also launched a satellite for Venezuela in 2008, but that, too, may be having problems, Balaam said. Neither the Chinese or Venezuelans have confirmed any difficulties with that programme. China's approach to the satellite business differs from the mainstream in another respect -- its use of barter arrangements. "We think each case is different, but in some cases it looks like an exchange of satellite capacity for raw materials or natural resources, or for political consideration," Balaam said. "If you look at Venezuela or Bolivia, these are countries that may have difficulty buying their own satellites, so China enables another path to get there." The approach would be consistent with similar moves by China in recent years, where it provides economic assistance and other less tangible considerations in exchange for political influence and access to resources to feed its industries.

In Indonesia, RED will have both English and Bahasa Indonesia subtitles," he added.
CHINA LAUNCHES "YAOGAN VII" REMOTE-SENSING SATELLITE
China has launched a remote-sensing satellite, "Yaogan VII," from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern Gansu Province. The satellite was successfully launched into the space on a Long March 2D carrier rocket at 4:42 pm, the center reported. It will be mainly used for scientific experiment, land resources survey, crop yield estimates and disaster prevention and reduction, according to the center. The satellite was developed by the China Academy of Space Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. The rocket was designed by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, also under the corporation. The flight was the 120th of the Long March series of carrier rockets. The satellite's predecessor, "Yaogan VI," was launched in April, from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern Shanxi Province. "Yaogan V" was launched last December, also from Taiyuan. "Yaogan IV" was also launched last December from Jiuquan and "Yaogan III" from Taiyuan in November 2007. "Yaogan I" and "Yaogan II" satellites were launched in April 2006 and May 2007, respectively.

FRANCE TO LAUNCH ANOTHER MILITARY SPY SATELLITE France is going to launch another military spy satellite from the European Space Agency (ESA) launch site in French Guiana, the defense ministry and ESA have announced. The launcher Arianespace confirmed on its website that the final preparation for shooting Helios 2B has finished. The first such launch under French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set for 1626 GMT on December 9 from Guiana. "In an international context marked by uncertainties, France must be able to understand the strategic environment in which she is evolving and to anticipate threats," the defense ministry said in a briefing document. France aims to rely on Helios 2B for better image and identification on sites.

GLOBAL FLASH NEWS angered the United States. "We received a letter from the Iranians to launch a satellite for them some months ago. We don't plan to give them a response," top Indian officials said. Any such launch would be a sensitive issue given that Western nations view with concern Iran's missile programme. The remarks from Delhi came as Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki wound up a two-day visit to India. Iran launched its first domestically-made satellite into orbit in February, insisting its intentions were peaceful.

European Commission has dictated that European countries must switch off analog TV by 2012. The 790MHz to 862 MHz band will be set aside to support nextgeneration mobile phone services that allow video playing, Web browsing and highspeed data downloads. EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding is aiming for high-speed broadband coverage for the entire EU population by the end of 2013. "The digital dividend is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make 'broadband for all' a reality all over Europe," she said. So far only 5 European countries have switched off analog TV: Finland, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden.

ANALOG TV
DIGITAL
Remember the old days of analog TV, radio, etc. Most of us do unless you're really young. And still today there are plenty of analog systems in use. Normal radio still uses analog transmission. But the digital age has begun and more and more we will use digital systems rather than analog systems. Digital transmission systems have many advantages over analog transmission systems, like higher quality of audio and video. How come digital systems can transmit higher quality signals than analog systems? The truth is that they don't. They just use some tricks to eliminate noise. When something like video and audio, is recorded by an analog system, the recording has a certain quality. This recording (when done professionally) has a very high quality. When the recording is transmitted it is modulated directly to a carrier wave, which is then transmitted through the air, cable, via satellite, etc. During this transmission, the carrier and the modulated signal will loose amplitude (power) and due to interference noise is introduced to the carrier and its modulated signal. The result will always be a received signal that has a lower quality than the JANUARY
TRANSMISSION
transmitted signal. Hence, the modulated signal, the recording, will also be of lower quality than the original. Analog transmission systems are unable to maintain the quality the original has. In the digital world the recording can be transmitted to another place without loosing any quality. An exact copy of the original recording is transmitted. So how come that digital transmission systems don't loose quality when transmitting a signal? The digital transmission system needs to transmit those zeros and ones, and it does this by modulating the carrier wave. Low power for a 0 and high power for a 1 (This is the most simple way of modulating. There are much more sophisticated forms of modulation, but it would take a whole book to describe them all.) So on the receiving end, it doesn't matter anymore what the quality of the signal is, as long as it still is possible to identify the zeros and ones. Noise in the received signal is no problem. A "1" with noise is still a "1" and a "0" with noise is still a "0". Of course the noise can not be too high, otherwise mistakes would be made and a zero would be received as one or a one would be received as a zero.

THE FUTURE OF SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS Satellites have been used in telecommunications since the mid-1960s. For a decade or so, they carried the bulk of international telephone calls, which they still do on routes to small and developing countries. In addition, VSAT (very small aperture terminal) networks provide essential communications for large companies, big ships, and disaster relief. But the use of satellites on any wider scale has been ruled out by their traditional disadvantages (high cost, expensive and bulky terminal equipment, and annoying delays in voice transmission), and by advances in competing media such as undersea fiber-optic cable. The signs now, however, are that satellites are about to emerge as a powerful force in communications, as they have already done JANUARY
in television broadcasting. Three factors explain why: Technological advances are improving the price/performance ratio of satellite communications systems. Important breakthroughs are taking place in almost all aspects of satellite design, construction, and operation as the digital revolution that has affected so many other industries sweeps through satellites. These enhancements are boosting system capacity and power and consequently cutting the cost per telephone call, enabling satellites to fulfill more telecommunications functions. Structural changes in terrestrial telecommunications are creating both the demand for satellite communications services and the environment in which they can play a useful role.

DISH NETWORK VIP722 DVR HD The ViP722 features an internal hard drive for its DVR, which is good for storing up to 350 hours of standard-definition (SD) programming or up to 55 hours of highdefinition (HD) programming. The ViP722's DVR function also allows you to pause live TV for up to an hour for each tuner. The ViP722's back panel offers a wide variety of connectors, including a coaxial connection for over-the-air HD broadcasts. Two additional coaxial connections allow for two signals from the satellite, which means that you can watch one show while recording another with the DVR. The two connections for the satellite also enable "dual mode" and "single mode". In dual mode, you can simultaneously watch different programming on two different TVs. (However, only one of the TVs can make use of an HD signal; the second TV must run an SD signal.) In single mode, the receiver can create picture-in-picture output for two TVs, but they must display the same images. Two remotes (one of which is equipped with UHF Pro technology) allow the dual mode to work well, even when the TVs are in different rooms.

DIRECTV HR21-700 Thanks to the DirecTV HR21-700's combination of high-definition (HD) programming and digital video recording (DVR), it's a handy satellite receiver, especially for people who don't necessarily have room in the TV cabinet for more than one piece of hardware. You can view both HD and standard-definition (SD) signals with the HR21-700. If you need to connect an over-the-air antenna to your satellite receiver, however, the HR21-700 isn't a good choice, as it only accepts input from the satellite dish. DirecTV doesn't yet offer local channels in HD in every market, making the lack of an over-the-air option a potentially big problem with this receiver. In fact, the lack of an over-the-air connector is arguably the major difference between the HR21-700 and the company's HR20-700 model. The DirecTV HR21-700 looks very similar to the HR20700, at least on the front panel. The unit's infrared sensor is large, allowing you to easily use the remote control from an angle. On the front panel, you'll find several handy buttons, including Power, Guide, Menu, Record, four-direction arrows, Info and Resolution (which allows you to select from four different HD resolutions) buttons. You'll also find two hidden panels on the DirecTV HR21-700 that contain the access card slot, the Reset button, and a USB port (which is designed for future use, according to DirecTV).
HUMAX FOXSAT-HDR The Foxsat-HDR features a 320GB harddisk, which dwarfs the 160GB hard-disk inside the Sky+ HD box and allows you to record up to 80 hours of hi-def programmes or 200 hours of standard-definition programmes. It also boasts twin satellite tuners, enabling you to record one channel while watching another or record two channels while watching a third. In addition to the impressive hard-disk capacity the unit also supports Freesat+, which like

Freeview+ is a group of features that makes it really easy to record programmes using data from the respective broadcasters. They include Series and Split Recording; Accurate Recording, which tracks the start and end times of programmes and adjusts the recording schedule accordingly; Schedule Tracking, which records the programme if it moves to a different day or time, and Alternate Instances, which searches the EPG to find another broadcast if the recording schedule overlaps. The unit constantly records up to two hours of TV into a buffer memory, which allows you to pause and rewind live TV, but sadly you can't retrospectively record programmes from the buffer. You can also start watching a programme before it has finished recording, or 'chase play' in marketing speak.

This latest receiver in the Traxis line comes to the USA. With this unit finally make the plunge into to conform to a smaller footprint. Lets face it these other boxes have a lot of wasted space even the Traxis 2500. It makes a lot of sense to make a smaller footprint for the electronics to fit into, except when you are making use if a PVR setup. Also any CI or common interface does not take up much room. With a this smaller foot print the Traxis 1500 is half the height and approximately three quarters of an inch smaller around the four sides than the Traxis 2500. Now you can ship double the units for the same price. A new mirrored finish in the display panel is kind of cool & different, when the digits, power, and digital lock lights up, it is like looking through a two way mirror. Different to this unit is its dual video out, which I cannot see much sense to only if there was a duel AV out so you can on set of AV to your TV and the other to a channel modulator. The receiver comes with 3 games, and many manufacturers are including games but please give me a break. Some of these games that the companies include give me flash backs from back in the 1970's. Who would even play these when you have play station , xbox, and nintendo.
The Satwork satellite receiver is a new entry to the DVB receiver market. Boasting a new and different front panel design that flips forward to access the front panel controls. The front panel is a sleek new design. The new software upgrades has helped some shortcommings from when the unit since it was first introduced. Channels scanned are added to one satellite list and cannot be sorted or displayed by satellite description. No DiSEqc 1.2 for small dish mover. Preprogramed satellite frequencies are updateable.

A BRIEF ON DISH NETWORK HD SERVICES
H
igh Definition Television – try asking a fifty year old man five years ago what it is and most likely you will get a face that looks as confused as you feel. But is the concept really that alien? Actually, the concept of High Definition television was popular in Japan for many years. It is only in the last couple of years that this concept has caught up with the Americans as well. And then one day boom, every one is talking about it. It has taken hold of the United States in a big way. Perhaps the most basic things one needs to know about High Definition TV or HDTV as it is more popularly known, is that is a totally separate television format from its predecessors; the normal television. Knowledge of this fact
JANUARY
alone can help one understand the nature of high definition television and how one can take advantage of it in one's home entertainment center. So the next logical question that should pop up in your mind is “How is satellite TV different from normal television?” Satellite TV differs from normal in several ways like: All high definition television programming has the same 16:9 aspect ratio unlike normal television which usually does not have this feature. Picture Resolution: Television pictures are usually measured in the number of horizontal line resolution that they are composed of and the pattern that the lines are scanned onto the screen. For example; standard definition television has four hundred and eighty horizontal lines that are scanned in two separate steps: First the odd numbered lines are scanned onto the screen. A fraction of a second later, the even numbered lines is scanned, creating an illusion of a complete picture. This pattern is called an Interlacing Pattern and hence the standard definition television is said to have a resolution of 480i, whereas high definition television can have resolutions of 720i, 1080i. These differences between standard definition and high definition television make it easy to understand why there is a need for high definition television programming in order to get the most of your high definition TV set. Dish Network offers twenty five national channels at the entry level and thirty national channels in the premier level of high definition programming packages.

Inside view
1980 was a year that seen an enormous growth of satellite TV. The previous decades had produced a trend of computerization and technology with control systems becoming smaller than ever had been imagined. Then the satellite receiver equipment was born. At that point in time, there were only a handful of companies that were broadcasting TV shows through satellite, including the Home Box Office. There were many more lining up to be included in this phenomenon though. As popularity and demand grew, the cost of obtaining a satellite dish drastically dropped and the number of users continued to rise. It was quickly obvious that this was going to be a monster of an industry. However, the satellite equipment was difficult to operate, they were very large and required just as big amount of bandwidth to run. The advances in computer technology made way for the possibility of the signals to be transformed into digital. This was much more user friendly and used less bandwidth at the same time. It wasn't small enough, though. The study and development was continually growing to compress these signals, and once they finally did it, smaller satellite dishes were able to be used. By 1992, companies were able to encrypt

signals well enough that Pay-Per-View was developed and released to the public. Millions of people have flocked to satellite TV, and the dishes are small enough to be used by anyone today. They can be bought at very small sizes, even 18inch and there will probably be even smaller ones in the near future. Satellite TV is here to stay, especially with advance being made everyday that allow the home user to interact with the source. No one can say what exactly is going to happen, but you can bet that it is coming soon! Satellite TV was first considered as home entertainment only in certain cities. However, with the advanced technology of satellite TV, you are able to get the great programming selection and quality reception provided by the satellite TV, irrespective of your place of residence. Satellite services are available in almost all continents because satellite companies have strategically placed satellites above the earth. The large number of programming channels you are able to obtain through satellite TV is another major advantage. The programming channel service provided by satellite TV companies is not even comparable to cable TV.

Inside view Cable TV and Satellite TV are on great demand nowadays. These two types were compared according to their individual advantages. They are way better than the old version of TV which uses traditional antenna to transmit signal for a good view of shows on TV. Satellite TV is the newest version and believed that it is better than the cable TV. If it were, then why still people continue to use cable TV; let us try to compare the advantage of cable TV over Satellite TV. Cable TV and Satellite TV are both good for our homes, but let us try to compare this two which can weigh more from each other that can be better and

Satellite TV came out to be cheaper than the Cable TV because with cable TV, maintenance and repair may be costly, most especially the cables that which will be replaced. DIGITAL VIDEO
RECORDING Most of the popular Dish TV Network offer digital video recording equipment and services. The popularity of digital dish TV leaves them the current leader among the people living in United States with over ten million subscribers in comparison to cable TV. A dish TV network gives you free satellite equipment and they also provide a free installation in your homes. With this, you also get a DVR receiver and a HDTV receiver at no extra charge. A digital video recording (DVR) or a personal video recorder is a device that records video in digital format to a dish drive or other memory medium within a device. This can be used for stand-alone set-top boxes, portable media players and software for personal computers that enables video capture and playback from disk. It is basically nothing but a computer hard drive which is encased in a box and looks like any other electronic components that are stacked in your entertainment centre. The memory device is connected to other components of your entertainment system with the help of jacks that are located at the back of the DVR. These are typically the normal RCA jacks that are used to make JANUARY
connections with satellite TV receiver, VCR or DVD player. Some of the modern satellite TV receivers have built-in DVR. It can also be used in conjunction with high definition broadcasts. Having a digital video recorder (DVR) allows you to record TV programs without using videotape. The information is digitally recorded in the hard drive of the DVR unit. Recording digital satellite TV signals on a DVR is much more complicated process than recording broadcast signals or analog signals. This process is complicated because MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 streams that are used need to be encrypted so that people cannot view the satellite programming without having a subscription. Some of the DVR are much technically advanced that they even allow you to have an on–screen caller ID function. When you set up your services with satellite TV provider you need to be hooked up to DVR receiver over the phone. This facility uses a phone in order to communicate with your system so that, you can get pay per view. The on-screen caller ID function allows you to see who is calling in your house right on your television screen.

Analogue Switch off in
Denmark
Analogue-TVswitch-off (ASO) in Denmark is now over – October 31 at midnight – all analogue signals switched off and only digital TV-signals were there. Throughout the ASO run up and during implementation of the new technology Triax has had a leading role in developing new products – DVB-T receivers – for use after the switch-off. In very close cooperation with broadcasters Triax has developed and manufactured an MPEG-4 receiver with Viaccess decryption embedded. The receiver has a smart slim Scandinavian design with a very easy user interface and a very nice, easy to use remote control. Further the receiver has JANUARY
feat ures such as an eSATA port for connecting an external hard drive for a personal video recorder or PVR-function. The in-built USB-port can be used for updating the software. A typical power saving adaptor for a PC with an USB connection can also be used together with TRIAX receivers with an USB-port, by doing this you only need to use the remote for the receiver. While the receiver and the TV-set are connected to the power saving adaptor and the adaptors USB-plug is connected to the USB-port on the receiver, the receiver becomes the main unit of the set-up. When the receiver is switched on or off with the remote, the receiver and the TV-set will simultaneously be switched on or off as well. This means you will only need to use the remote of the receiver. This feature gives an added feature to the PC power saving adaptor for PC's – not only saving costs by turning off the equipment during standby mode, but also by preventing the usual mess with several remotes on the coffee table. Some months ago, TRIAX introduced its first MPEG 4 DVB-T receiver for the Scandinavian Boxer market. This box has
47
pro ven that consumers are not just looking for a ordinary receiver, when they have an option to have something that looks nice in design and is very “invisible”. Sales of T-HD405VA have been quite satisfying since its introduction. TRIAX introduce its first PVR-ready MPEG 4 HD receiver utilizing external HDD enabling customers to make their individual choice of performance in terms of recording. Using e-SaTa external disk consumers can record all programs while looking on another TV-channel. The new THD409VA twin tuner PVR ready set-topbox looks like the zapper box and is approved by both Boxer and Viaccess.

HOW TO GET FREE SATELLITE
TV
SERVICES? It has been all of our desire to get everything free of cost and ever since the invention of Internet this desire has been the greatest. Anything from books to the latest music album is available in the net and it is only rational that we now look up to the net for free satellite TV reception. With the modern advancement in data transfer-viewing programs from across the globe has become nothing more than finding the right site and having a good Internet speed. There are two very common ways of viewing free online TV each with its own list of advantages and disadvantages. But the conclusion is simple, online free TV is no longer a myth. The issue arises only when it comes to the mode of connecting the PC monitor to online TV. There are two main ways in which this can be achieved. First is the option of using free online TV websites. These are reliable sites that offer you free feed of various television programmes across the globe. They function by linking various portals to TV networks. Some of the most common and famous free online TV sites are JANUARY
channelchooser.com and beeline.com .All channels are available totally free of cost 24 hours a day. Since it is completely free of cost the demand for this site is huge and at any given time the number of people demanding a programme is so huge that it is beyond the sites capacity and so most of the times there is a huge jam and the probability of seeing a program when we want it is rare. Even if you do get to see a program there is a high probability that the feed will stop in 10 minutes with an error message saying that the network is experiencing difficulty. Hence the whole ordeal becomes completely frustrating for the viewer. The next method, probably the more reliable method is the satellite TV downloads software. This again is a free method of seeing TV online by downloading software that assembles the TV channels for us. It provides us with an interface to browse through the channels available. The great advantage of this software is that it offers digital clarity pictures for over 3000 channels.

Multiple Televisions
on One Satellite
Dish
Those who avail themselves of satellite television often want to split the signal between multiple televisions scattered throughout the home. Your success at doing so will depend on what type of hardware you have installed and the package you've purchased from your provider. Some providers will require additional hardware to allow separate televisions to view different channels at the same time. If this is what you want, make sure to tell your satellite provider as much when you're ordering the service. Such services may require another tuner device, which sits on top of the television, to allow each television to tune into their own channel. For those who don't expect to view more than one program at a time, the task is somewhat easier. Many of the tuners that come with a satellite subscription have multiple outputs. In these cases, one may simply hook up more than one television to the box. This will allow the user to view more than one television at once, though the televisions will display the same channel. Satellite television typically hooks up via the same coaxial cable that's used for cable and antenna connections. When you're purchasing this cable, it's best to get the highest quality you can and to buy it with JANUARY
the connectors already attached. Compromised cables can cut the signal quality and, with satellite television, not having the maximum picture clarity truly defeats the purpose of having the subscription at all. Remember that the audio from satellite television is as impressive as is the video, so you'll want to hook your audio outputs up to a system that can deliver the sound in all its glory, as well. Check to see if your tuner box can accommodate switching between more than one system. If not, it may be easier to hook up a second audio array to your stereo system and install the speakers in the room where the second television is located. With satellite television, it's always best to get any hardware directly from the provider. You may be able to find "discount" versions out there but there's no guarantee that they'll work with your setup. In addition, some satellite providers have different subscription plans for homes with more than one television so, even if the thirdparty hardware works, you may be violating the terms of your service agreement.

programmes, it opens up a whole new world of viewing opportunities including more live sporting events, the latest movies, dedicated programming for children and educational programmes covering health, the natural world, history and more. Digital TV also enables broadcasting to be more interactive (often through the "red button"). Some digital TV platforms also offer specific services such as audio description to viewers with disabilities, especially those with sight or hearing impairments. Most of the developed world is going digital. From the US to Australia, and France to Italy, nations across the world will be switching to digital-only broadcasting over the next 10 years. The UK is widely seen to be leading the world in uptake and enthusiasm for the medium, as well as content and delivery. Digital choices are still limited - today only around 73% of UK households are able to access the full range of digital terrestrial television services (digital TV through an aerial). This switchover will occur in stages, by ITV regions, across the UK.

MOTOROLA TO SELL STB BUSINESS
ALJAZEERA BUYS 5 ART CHANNELS
Motorola is to sell its Connected Home Division, including the world's biggest STB business, according to the New York Times. The newspapers says sources at Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, hired to advise on strategic options, are now recommending a 3 way split with networks being sold off and the remaining company separated between the mobile phone and 2 way radio businesses. It had previously been envisaged only the handset business would be spun off separately. The connected home division is already up for sale. Motorola's Connected
Arab & Radio & Television (ART), the largest pay-TV broadcaster in the Middle East, has sold 6 sports channels to Qatarbased Al Jazeera's sports division. The deal could see a billion-dollar cash payment made to ART. Ayman Jadah, Al Jazeera's General Manager, said: "Right now, we have about one million subscribers. We are looking at a figure of 3million subscribers in the next two years." Al Jazeera already has 8 sports channels on air.
Home Division produced $199 million profit last quarter (to September), could be valued at up to $5 billion. The unit's revenue fell 15%, to $2 billion last year. Motorola currently has $4 billion debt and its handset unit has slipped badly in market share and is now relying on its Droid smart phones to turn things around. Motorola got into the cable STB business in 2000 when it acquired General Instrument's Cable TV business for $17 billion. JANUARY

INDIA TO LIMIT TV CHANNELS A report carried by the BBC Monitoring service says that India's TRAI media regulator is looking to limit the number of TV channels available. Quoting Indiantelevision.com, the BBC report says: "The Government has directed the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) to examine the maximum number of channels that can be permitted in the country in the wake of spectrum constraints but has no
plans to curb the growth of the broadcasting sector." Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni clarified that the study by the sector regulator must be seen within this context and there was no government motive to curb the growth of TV channels in the country. "Trai has been requested to examine the number of channels which can be permitted in the country keeping available spectrum and transponder capacities as well as technological developments and general practice internationally," Soni said.
DISH REACHES 14M Dish Network has recently passed the 14 million customer milestone. "We have more high definition channels than any other TV provider, we feature awardwinning DVR technology, and we do it all at the most economical prices in the business." Dish Network offers more than 150 national HD channels, local HD channels in 152 markets, and top-rated 1080p technology that provides the best picture available.

(Ghulam Habib, Kuwait) Ans: Your Humax got an embedded Viaccess-decoder and the suitable card-slot but no Common-Interface. This means you should change to the new HUMAX F1VACI, which comes with embedded Viaccess (like you have now) and a 2-slot CommonInterface which works with Module (OCMCIA) for Irdeto, Conax, CryptoWorks, Nagravision and more. But be aware: IrdetoPCMCIA are not available yet to the public! Another way to use Viaccess and Irdeto at the same time is the new MICONIK 1000S with Multi-Access Interface. TV AT THE SAME TIME you watch more than one TV at Q:8 Can the same time? (Wajahut Hussain, via e-mail) A: In a single LNB, single receiver system, you can watch a single channel on multiple TVs, if you have cabled from your receiver to each TV. It is not possible to watch different channels with this system. To watch different channels you need dual LNB's for C and dual LNB's for KU. You will also need a separate receiver for each location, and a fairly complex means of splitting and distributing the incoming cables. It can be done, cable companies do it all the time, but it is probably not worth the effort, especially if you want to view subscription channels because the bad news is you will need to pay another subscription for each location. That can be expensive. However, having at least two receivers is not a bad idea, and fairly easy to do. However, you can only watch signals on ONE satellite at a time doing this. One alternative is to record programs ahead of time for viewing by others in the family. In this case having a couple of receivers, a couple VCR's and splitting subscription channels between the two will let you build up a nice collection of tapes in no time.

SATELLITE INTERNET Satellite Internet is one of the fastest growing Broadband Internet solutions in the United States. There are two main Satellite Internet Service Providers for residential customers, HughesNet and WildBlue. When compared side by side, Wild Blue, with its lower upfront and monthly costs and aggressive promotions, is hands down the elite choice for Satellite Internet Access. Satellite Internet Connections offer the same quality of Internet as DSL and cable companies, but are available to customers in rural areas, where cable and DSL do not venture and dialup ISP's are the only option. With Satellite Internet Companies competing for customers that cable and DSL don't want, the promotions have been getting more and more aggressive, which is good news for consumers. For rural Internet users who have been forced to endure slow dialup ISP's and as a result have been deprived of all the Internet can offer, such as, fast access to information, quick downloads and instant email deliveries, Satellite Internet could be just the thing to get you back in the game. The benefits for farmers, ranchers or any other rural resident just looking to bank, shop, keep in touch with family and friends, or even go to school online can be extremely valuable JANUARY
and a great time saver. Satellite Internet companies like WildBlue and HughesNet, offer a service that is always on, fast and best of all doesn't require a phone line. The installation is minimal, just a satellite dish mounted to your physical property or placed on a pole in your yard, a coaxial cable run from the satellite dish to your satellite internet modem, which connects to your computer through a USB port and an Ethernet cable - That's it. Satellite Internet providers like Wild Blue will actually send out an installer to get you hooked up and in most cases it's free. Chances are if you are saddled with a dialup ISP, because the cable company won't come out, you are probably a little television challenged as well. If your Broadband Internet connection is going to be provided via satellite, your television may as well be to. Like Satellite Internet, Satellite TV promotions are more aggressive than ever as companies like DIRECTV and Dish Network attempt to provide service to customers ignored by the cable companies. Dish Network is the better overall value in my opinion, providing lower monthly costs, larger programming options, award winning satellite TV receivers and the most high-definition channels of all the satellite TV providers.

POSSIBLE DRAWBACKS WITH SATELLITE TV Exploring on your options with paid TV entertainment? Wonder what’s good or bad with satellite TV or cable TV deals? While most are recommending satellite TV (Dish or DIRECTV); this article tends to highlight the possible drawbacks on satellite TV entertainment. Satellite TV companies, namely Dish Network and DIRECTV, claimed that they have the lowest subscription fees in America – you’ll get hundreds of TV channel in just less than $20 (or $30) per month. Nevertheless, most of the good channels are not included in these cheap standard packages. In order to get these exclusive programming, customers are often required to pay extra. NFL live matches, premium movie channels, HDTV packages – sum up additional charges for these programs, it’s common that satellite TV customers will pay up to $60 - $80 per month. There are indeed some complaints on satellite TV not working well during bad weather. As a matter of fact, satellite signal transmission does get interrupted during heaving storm or snow. Satellite TV users may experience short term service outage until the storm is gone. Cable companies always attract their JANUARY
customers with bundle services – phone, cable broadband, and cable radio/TVs. Such bundle services offer lucrative bargains for cable users in overall expenses. Satellites TV on the other hand, do not have much additional service to offer. Satellite radios are mostly dominated by Sirius and XM; satellite Internet speed is having hard time sorting out its latency problem. All in all, when you order satellite TV, your system (decoder and dish) is just for the TV entertainment – that’s it. When satellite TV is mentioned, what comes up in your mind first? The small 18” dish that named Dish Network or DIRECTV? Or is the big ugly dish system that people used to setup on their garage roof? While the installation for Dish Network and DIRECTV are done by the company; most custom satellite TV system are installed by the consumers themselves. Satellite dish adjustments, cabling work, and decoder setup - frankly the setup process is pretty messy and is seldom done correctly for the first time. Although minority (tech lovers and hobbyists) may enjoy the lengthy setup process; but I am sure most of us would just like to have TV entertainment without all the hassles.
