Home for the Holidays
“Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays ‘Cause no matter how far away you roam, If you want to be happy in a million ways, For the holidays, you can’t beat home, sweet home.” – Robert Allen and Al Stillman
From the first recording by Perry Como way back in 1954, to countless remakes through the decades, we’ve heard this holiday classic a gazillion times. And every December when we hear Perry croon “there’s no place like home for the holidays,” most of us can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic – not just for the good times of holidays past, but also for the moments that fill a lifetime with the people we love. After all, home is not just a place where we simply reside. Rather, it is a place that resides in us, in our hearts. Home is what’s helped make us who we are. But for far too many people, home is not that warm, fuzzy place where we feel protected, encouraged, inspired. And holiday time is anything but joyful when living paycheck-to-paycheck means a decision to pay a utility bill leaves little to buy groceries, and even less for Christmas presents and other holiday festivities.
When a House is Not a Home.
For financially burdened families living in overcrowded or substandard rental housing, stress, anxiety and insecurity are their everyday reality. Their limited income means housing options are limited and typically involve trade-offs. Finding an affordable rental unit or house that has enough space can mean living in an unsafe neighborhood. Renting in a safer area can mean living like sardines in a can. And sometimes when 2
a family finds a big enough place in a decent enough neighborhood, they’re at the mercy of landlords unresponsive to serious maintenance issues. Many families are chronically uprooted, forced to pack up and move every couple of years to escape escalating rent. Their children bear the brunt growing up in multiple dwellings, attached to none. Moving often means they have to adjust to new schools and make new friends. These are not homes idealized in sentimental songs. They are challenges – obstacles that impact a family’s sense of well-being, health, safety, education and personal development.
Paying Less for More
In Pinellas County, 129,815 low-income households pay more than 30% of their annual income for housing. Of these households, 75,826 are burdened with paying between 40% – 60% of their annual income for housing.* But in a decent, affordable home, a family can break this debilitating cycle in a generation. An affordable home that consumes less than 30% of income means more money is available to manage lives more effectively. And kids are the first to benefit by living in a stable home. They are healthier, have fewer behavioral problems and they perform better in school, according to studies by Habitat International. For the past 30 years, Habitat Pinellas has built affordable homes and made dreams come true for 318 local families – families whose lives are stabilized and positively impacted by living in secure homes where they can nurture and be nurtured, put down roots and thrive. And because of that, they now know “there’s no place like home for the holidays.” * Shimberg Center for Housing Studies, University of Florida
we build homes, not houses
Sharing the Joy Just one year ago this fall, ground was broken in St. Petersburg for two homes that would chart the same course. Built at the same time and on the same block, the two homes even shared the same sponsor, Crown Automotive Group. Consequently, the homes were built by many of the same volunteers as dozens of enthusiastic Crown employees worked on both build sites, including Crown president Jim Myers.
“A truly significant benefit for us in working with Habitat Pinellas was the opportunity to get to know the Jocelyn and Millwater families. Being part of creating such joy for these wonderful and deserving families made for a very special Christmas not only for them, but for us.”
And exactly one year ago, these two homes were dedicated together. That – Jim Myers, President night in mid-December, two ecstatic families shared the same incredible Crown Automotive Group joy of receiving the keys to the homes for which they worked so hard. They became homeowners and neighbors, and with the turn of a key, both families’ lives were changed.
This holiday season the Jocelyn and Millwater families continue their dual experiences with both families thriving in their new homes. Both families shared with us just what “home for the holidays” now means to them. “Home for the holidays means getting to actually enjoy my son on the one day out of the year when I get to spoil him rotten and it’s okay.” Before becoming a Habitat homeowner, Heather Millwater and her autistic son, Thomas, had always lived in rental units and cramped houses in neighborhoods plagued with sirens and flashing lights. “Due to circumstances surrounding money, we could never afford to live in more desirable areas,” said Heather, a full-time office manager. Now that Heather has her Habitat home, she no longer has to daydream about decorating a home of her own for Christmas or cooking a holiday meal in her own kitchen. “Christmas is a lot more fun when you don’t have to stress out about making ridiculously high rent, or that your lease is ending soon and you have to decide to stay or go. You shouldn’t have to decide between rent and a few Christmas presents for your kid.” “I now host Thanksgiving and Christmas with my extended family. It’s a nice feeling knowing I can provide that to my family in a clean, safe environment. Habitat allowed me to provide for my son in a way that I did not ever think was possible. I am so grateful I got this opportunity.”
“It means a lot to decorate our house for the holidays and not someone else’s apartment – and I also have a front yard to work with!” Haitian-born Claudison and Sophia Jocelyn have worked hard, not only to make a stable life for their family, but also to become U.S. citizens. When Sophia was pregnant with their younger daughter in Haiti, the Jocelyn family was faced with the devastation following the catastrophic earthquake in 2010. Desperate to support his family, Claudison left for the U.S. to find work, securing two jobs and saving to bring his family to America. Prior to becoming a Habitat homeowner, the family lived in a small two-bedroom apartment living paycheck to paycheck with the couple’s combined income from maintenance work and a hotel hospitality position. Now that the Jocelyns have a safe, affordable home with more space, they also have a little more breathing room for living expenses. They not only celebrate the joy of the holiday season, but also their new path forward. “Now I can see my life on the right path because my daughters and wife have a place to call home in a safer community – we can have peace of mind,” said Claudison. “Since we moved into our home, we get to do a lot of things that we never had the chance to do before. It means a lot that I get to decorate our house for the holidays and not someone else’s apartment – and I also have a front yard to work with! I can’t wait! We really love our house.” 3

Volunteer Opportunities!
Homeowner Services Volunteers Needed Habitat Pinellas is looking to expand its Homeowner Services Committee and we are in need of additional members to help us serve more families. The purpose of the committee is to review and make recommendations for “homeowner candidates” (HOCs) to our Board of Directors, as well as assist potential HOCs through their journey toward homeownership by helping to guide them through the requirements of our Habitat Pinellas program.
Ever thought about volunteering in another country? Here’s your chance!
The Homeowner Services Committee is responsible for screening applicants, conducting home visits and recommending potential HOCs to become Habitat homeowners based on their need, willingness to partner, and ability to pay.
Join other Habitat Pinellas volunteers on a week-long Habitat for Humanity Global Village trip on May 2-10, 2015, where we will build for a family in need in Guatemala.
Committee members will generally need to be good listeners and relationship builders, sensitive to and experienced with other issues that may result from living with a limited income. They should also have some skills or knowledge in a variety of areas such as budgeting, home maintenance, community assets, etc.
With some evenings free, you will even get the chance to explore the area.
The committee meets monthly (usually the first Wednesday for one to two hours) and regular attendance is required. In addition, you can anticipate spending an additional two to three hours monthly talking with a partner HOC, conducting a home visit and/or attending a home dedication. TO APPLY: If you have the skills and desire to assist in this area that is vital to our program, please submit a summary of your experience and why you would be an asset to this committee to Candi Hagler at CHagler@habitatpinellas.org.

HABITAT A tribute to one of our many extraordinary Habitat supporters!
Through an extensive market analysis, it has been determined that Pinellas County, Florida can support a total of three Habitat ReStores. With the success of our Clearwater ReStore, we are currently in the business planning process of adding our second ReStore by late 2015. This is a very exciting time for us as it will create even more sustainable funding to assist Habitat’s overall construction and repair initiatives in Pinellas County. The additional store will also allow us to expand our brand and mission awareness throughout the county.
HERO
Floridians like to refer to their friends from the north as “snowbirds.” We know (and love) several who fly down each year and spend some time pitching in here at Habitat Pinellas. But we prefer to call them our heroes. Foster Van Doren is one such friend from the north.
FOSTER VAN DOREN VOLUNTEER EXTRAORDINARE!
A Michagander, Foster winters here in Pinellas County and since 2008, every week of every year during his stay he volunteers two days a week at our Habitat ReStore. And Foster is a pretty handy sort of guy. From fixing and rehabbing donations, loading and unloading large From left: Avid ReStore customer Pepe Vallejo, ReStore Supervisor items, to assisting Glenn Cooperman and our hero, volunteer Foster Van Doren. customers on the floor, he really does it all! And with a smile. He has been invaluable to us. He even helps out on deconstruction/salvage of homes slated for demolition or major renovation. Most of the year when Foster is back home in Harbor Springs, he also volunteers faithfully at Northwest Michigan Habitat. They must find him as invaluable as we do since they named him “Volunteer of the Year” this past spring and nominated him for the same award with Habitat Michigan! But back here in Pinellas, he is most certainly our “Habitat Hero!” 5

building the dream
Letter from the Board Chair and CEO Julie Klavans Chair
Mike Sutton CEO
At Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County, we are committed to helping
“Because of a home, families have better health, better security and better futures.” – Jonathon Reckford, Habitat for Humanity International CEO
people in our community improve their housing situations because we believe affordable and sustainable housing is foundational for breaking the cycle of poverty. Through the commitment of our Habitat partner families, volunteers, donors and staff, our affiliate was able to serve 28 Pinellas County families in fiscal year 2013-2014. This past June, we marked a huge milestone by celebrating the completion of the Harrell family home, Habitat Pinellas home number 300. For the eighth consecutive year, Habitat Pinellas was recognized by Charity Navigator as a four-star charity, an accomplishment that less than 1% of charities evaluated nationwide have achieved. This speaks to the strategic approach and direction of our Board of Directors and the talent and dedication carried out by our staff. In 2014, our 300+ homeowners contributed $252,000 to Pinellas County through homeowner taxes. We are proud of our families for their dedication to improve not only their lives, but also the lives of their children. In 2015, we will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County! The future is bright for Habitat in our community thanks to the continued support of our loyal donors and volunteers. During our 30th anniversary year, we will open a second ReStore in Pinellas County as a way to raise additional revenue for our programs. Be on the lookout for details on our new program, the “Neighborhood Preservation Partnership,” focused on rehabilitation projects in the Midtown community of St. Petersburg. Recently, our Board of Directors adopted a four year strategic plan, one that is focused on growth, quality and sustainability. More than 200 families will be served by Habitat for Humanity in the four year period, a period that will also see Habitat build sustainability for the future. Reaching this feat will not come easy. Habitat will rely on our community more than ever for the volunteer and financial resources to reach these 200 families. We will look to you to continue to support Habitat through your generous support of time, talent and treasure. Thank you for your continued support of Habitat for Humanity! In partnership,
Mike Sutton, CEO
Julie Klavans, Board of Directors Chair 7

And building on last year’s unique artist auction, 20 professional artists will transform items from our Habitat ReStore into master works for our silent auction.
