I

t’s barely been a year since the conception of HABIT, and I cannot believe how far we have come. We went from being a small team to involving dozens of people of all talents: models, writers, photographers, stylists, and artists, expanding to schools across North County. This issue, our last for the 2011-12 school year, is the culmination of months of hard work, learning, research and communication. This issue was not without its challenges. We crossed our fingers it wouldn’t rain on our music-festival inspired spring shoot (Spring is in the Air page 10), up until two days before, when we realized we would have no choice but to relocate. We were extremely fortunate that it stopped raining for most of the shoot, which we ended up doing in a family friend of Beauty Assistant Grace’s backyard. We took every precaution, though, having the models stand on plastic wrap and having them hold their skirts strategically. The prom shoot was incredible, though not without its stresses as well; shortly before the shoot started I received a frantic call from Crystal, telling me all her makeup and tools had ended up in Irvine (I still don’t know how that happened). I handed the phone over to Grace, and the two of them figured it out as I retreated to the shooting bay. I’m immensely proud of how the makeup and hair turned out, as I am with the progression of the Beauty section, from design to content to making the makeup more apparent and dramatic in photos. With the year coming to a close, several of our staff members are graduating (good luck, class of 2012!), so we have several openings in the fashion and beauty departments. For more information, check out the “Get Involved” tab on www.habitfashionmag.com. We still have plenty of tricks up our fashionable sleeves! We’ll be working hard over the summer, so be sure to catch up with us and learn about how you can get involved on our website, and of course on Facebook.com/HABITmagazine. We’re always up to something, and this summer we’ll tide you over until the next issue with some cool online exclusives, so be sure to check it out! Until September!

dear grace, Dear Grace, My crush is coming over to my house to work on a school project. We are both shy but he is a lot quieter. I really want something to happen even if it’s just a little kiss or plans for a date, anything really. How do you think I should go about it? -Shy in Love

Dear Shy Chica, I wouldn’t come on too strong by kissing him or anything unless you sense he’s super into you. If I were in your position and things went well, when he’s leaving I would give him a nice long hug and say something like, “I had a lot of fun hanging out with you, even just working on the project. Want to get lunch this week?” That way you’re not coming on too strong but he knows you’re interested in hanging out with him again. Also, if he’s shy, telling him that you had fun will boost his confidence and will make him feel more comfortable around you. Don’t be nervous and just be yourself, and things should go well! <3 Grace

he could be charged with reckless driving, a criminal charge with possible jail time. I doubt he will get mad at you because you are just looking out for him. Remind him of how much you care about him and how deeply it would upset you if he were ever to get hurt. Tell him that whenever he is racing you worry about him, if he sees how much it affects you he may be more prone to do it less. <3 Grace Dear Grace, I’m 16 years old and have never kissed a guy. No one ever likes me that way — is there something wrong with me? Am I going to be forever alone? All my friends have boyfriends and I’m just the awkward third wheel. -Never Been Kissed

You can’t expect anyone to love you if you don’t love Never Been Kissed, yourself. Be positive! Dear Oh my gosh please do not

Dear Grace, My boyfriend and his friends all love to race. Everyday after school, they race going up to 110 miles per hour on busy streets and in shopping centers. He knows I don’t approve, but I’ve never said anything other than telling him to be safe. I constantly worry, but I know if I brought it up he’d just insist that he’s careful and continue doing it or get mad at me. -Mrs. Speed Racer Dear Mrs. Speed Racer, Think you definitely need to be more vocal about this and tell him your feelings. Not only is he putting himself in danger but he is endangering the lives of others as well. What if,when he is driving 60mph, a toddler runs out into the street? He may respond by saying the chances of that are highly unlikely but ask him if he is ready to be responsibly for hitting someone or possible taking a life. Remind him there have been many accidents in the past few years caused by speeding on winding roads. Also let him know that if he gets pulled over

say those things about yourself! There’s a great saying that goes “you can’t expect anyone to love you if you don’t love yourself,” and I totally agree. If you are unhappy and don’t like yourself, how can you expect some guy to think you are great? You don’t have to be the hottest girl to have confidence, but you do need to have a positive attitude. Next time you want to say something negative about yourself, stop yourself mid-thought and replace it with a positive thought. Be happy and smile! Studies show that people like to be around happy people, and it makes sense! Try to have a more positive outlook on things and people, boys included, will want to be around you. You are not defined by the number of boys that like you or the number of guys you have hooked up with, so don’t let that bring down your self-esteem. When you become the selfassured person that I know you can be, boys will notice, but until then don’t worry about them and focus on being happy without boys. <3 Grace Dear Grace, My best friend since 2nd grade is starting to drift away from me to her other friend who is really popular and goes to her school. Going to different schools has never been a problem for

us before, but now I feel like I’m losing her to her other friend, who is really pretty and parties all the time. I’ve always called her my best friend, but now I just get jealous of her relationship with the pretty, fun girl. I wish I could be more like her, but I don’t want to give up my values. -Unfun Friend Dear Friend, That’s hard because things like that are out of your control; there isn’t much you can do to change your friend’s mind about this girl who she is starting to be friends with. Talk to your friend about the whole situation and be honest with her. You don’t have to mention that you’re jealous about their new friendship but you can tell her something like, “I’ve noticed that we’ve been drifting apart lately, have you?” Remind her of your long-standing friendship and tell her you’d like to remain friends, even though attending different schools can make this difficult. You definitely don’t have to change or give up your values to maintain your friendship with your friend because she clearly likes you how you are if you’ve been friends all this time. She may be a bit bored with your friendship and is enjoying the newness of the other one. It may fade though if she realizes that this girl isn’t a very good influence and they don’t have much in common. <3 Grace Grace Weselak is a senior at Torrey Pines High School with some answers to your fashion, beauty, relationship, friend, and life problems. She has no training or education in counseling. Don’t be afraid to ask, confidentiality is guaranteed! deargrace@habitfashionmag.com http://www.formspring.me/DearrGrace www.habitfashionmag.com

Dear Grace, I have curly, frizzy, absolutely untamable hair. I have huge ears so when I straighten it I look like Dumbo. How can I tame my mane? -Frizzy Girl Dear Frizz, Evaluate your shampoo and conditioner, making sure that you use ones that cater to curly hair (try Herbal Essences‘ Hello Hydration). Avoid towel drying your hair, as this can cause friction which breaks up curls and causes frizz. Run your fingers through your hair a few times to get out the tangles and then squeeze then excess water out of your hair. Then add a bit of gel or mousse to your hair. If you blow-dry your hair, make sure that you use a diffuser because they help evenly distribute heat and air to all parts of your hair, keeping it from getting too poofy. <3, Grace

Whether used functionally to tell time or simply as a fashion statement, watches are back in a big way. Try simple twists on classics, like Michael Kors’ rose gold menswear-inspired look — rose gold is popping up everywhere, from nail color to hair tints. Stack bracelets and even different sized watches to create any kind of style mood: charm bracelets and a white mod watch for a chic, uptown look, a vintage cuff and a watch with a leather band for timeless look — create any kind of vibe by using accessories you already own. Or you can go in the opposite direction with a very minimalist look. A simple white and gold watch can be dressed up or down and goes with nearly everything. Try pairing a looser menswear watch with a feminine blouse or dress to add a little edge to an otherwise girly look. When considering which watch to buy, consider your watch wearing habits. If you already wear a watch every day, purchasing a higher end watch makes more sense than if you have always relied on your iPhone for the time. If you want to become a watch wearer but are not sure if you would wear one enough to make buying a more expensive one worthwhile, try out a less expensive one from Forever21 or Urban Outfitters. If you wear it every day for a few months, feel free to head for the watch counters at the department stores. -By Vanessa Pius

High School to Body Splash to Eau de Parfum

Black Nails to Greige Nails

As another school year ends, it is time to time to transition into summer beauty. Hello, warm bronzers and turqoise eyeliners! But it is not just the changing seasons that invite you to switch up your makeup. Swap out your boring high school beauty products for stylish new ones that fit into your college look and life.

During your coming four years of self-discovery, embrace your natural hair with a texturizing mist like the Alterna Bamboo Style Boho Waves Tousled Texture Mist ($20). We love the versatility of this product; use it to add grip before teasing, create beachy waves, or give hair styles a lived-in vibe.

With job interviews and internships on the horizon, your high school collection of fruity Bath & Body Works body splashes may not make the cut. Invest time and money in finding a classic, but age-appropriate perfume that is right for you with the help of an expert at the department or specialty store counter. We recommend Diane von Furstenberg Diane Eau de Parfum ($85) for classic sophistication and Balenciaga L’Essence Black nail polish said “mysterious and tough” in high ($95) for modern femininity. school, but after four years we promise you will find greige refreshing. Typically a mix of taupe, grey, and brown with purple undertones, greige is a softer take on edgy nails that looks so much trendier. We love the universally flattering and classic OPI You Don’t Know Jacques ($8).

Any change of climate can wreck your skin, making it more sensitive and irritated. Stick to cream blushes with natural ingredients like Tarte Cheek Stain ($30) to prevent aggravating it further. We love Tarte’s non-sticky, glowy cheek stains, which contain naturally-occurring antioxidants. Another plus of cream formulas: they are fast and easy to apply, requiring no brushes, so you can sleep in a little longer in the morning! Blissful, a neutral peachy pink color, creates a flattering flush.

We adore lip glosses in any shade and finish, but apply even a little too much and a glam look can quickly become a messy one. A non-drying lipstain like the Revlon Colorstay Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm ($9), which comes in 15 naturally-flushed colors, adds a sophisticated pop to the lips. To change up your lips on a whim, layer a sheer lipstick on top to create a custom shade or dab on the moisturizing lip balm from the other end for softened color. We like the color Passion, a bright look-at-me pink that brightens your face instantly.

Foundation to BB Cream

After discovering the crisp, neat lines gel eyeliners create, harsh black liquid eyeliner will be a thing of the past. Invest in a good liner brush like the Eco Tools Bamboo Angled Eyeliner Brush ($4); it will be worth it since gels glide on quickly and smoothly. In a pinch, they can even double as cream eyeshadows. Just smudge with your fingers after appplying a thick line. We love that gel eyeliners come in fun shades like eggplant, navy, and teal, not just black and brown like liquid ones do. Our pick is the Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eyeliner ($22), which stays on all day.

While a light moisturizer may have been sufficient for your teen years, it is now time to start using preventive skincare products to keep your skin smooth down the road. Add a smoothing serum like Boots No. 7 Protect & Perfect Beauty Serum ($20) to your routine and apply once a day for restored radiance.

By now, your hormone-raged skin has calmed down, so treat your skin nicely by throwing out your heavy, pore-clogging foundation for a light, skinprettifying beauty balm cream like the Clinique Age Defense BB Cream ($37). Like a super multi-tasking tinted moisturizer, it provides skin with sun protection and skincare benefits like protective antioxidants along with sheer, buildable coverage. Smooth it on with your fingers and you will be out the door in a minute!

Natural and flattering, Bobbi Brown’s clean aesthetic will resonate with your desire for simplicity. With classic colors and soft textures, you will leave the makeup counter with a romantic look. Ask your makeup artist for a pop of color with the brand’s Rich Lip Color SPF 12 to create a youthful and not at all oldfashioned look.

Wild Thing by Joelle Leib

coming to a pet store near you

D

uring her first visit to the zoo, a child will often fantasize about what it would be like to take home one of the exotic African animals as a pet. A hippo could live in the pool, a giraffe could stay in the backyard, and the lion could sleep in the guestroom. Although this dream seems impossible, a kid can have another type of African cat as a pet, the Savannah cat. The Savannah cat is a cross between a domestic cat and an African serval, which is a wild cat characterized by its long legs, oval ears, and beautifully spotted coat. The Savannah cat is not your typical cat, according to Savannah Cat breeder Frank Hopperton. Other than its face, it looks nothing like a domestic cat, as it has the same ears, coat, and body type as a serval. It also acts very differently than the average tabby cat. In fact, Hopperton claims that Savannah cats are known to have personalities that resemble a dog’s more than a cat’s. Like dogs, Savannah cats are loyal and playful, and “They will eagerly greet company at the door instead of hiding under the couch like a cat.” A Savannah cat’s build is also more like that of a small dog, as each cat weighs around 20 pounds and is a few feet long. Unfortunately, this seemingly perfect cat is not easy to come by. But lucky for San Diegans, The Savannah Cat Shoppe, is located

in our own Flower Hill Mall. Between high-end clothing stores and underneath a popular cafe, The Savannah Cat Shoppe affords shoppers the rare opportunity to see a Savannah cat up close. Inside, the walls are adorned with photographs of both servals and Savannah cats. Off to the left is an enclosure that houses a few young Savannah cats that sweetly greet spectators by rubbing against the glass walls. The proprietor, Frank Hopperton, stands off to the right, holding a larger cat in his arms that he allows people to play with and pet. Hopperton is passionate about the beautiful cats he sells, promoting them as great pets for both families with young children and for older couples. Since fewer than 100 Savannah cats are produced annually, they come with a hefty price tag, ranging from $2,500 to $25,000. Cathy Polk is one of these fortunate owners. She recently won her Savannah cat, Rocky, at a live auction. Rocky is eight months old and has a white, grey, and black coat, a tail that looks like a raccoon’s, and rounded green eyes. “He’s smart, he’s an escape artist, he’s strong, and he’s very fast,” Polk says. But most of all, “He has a will of his own.” When Polk first brought Rocky home, breeders advised her not to introduce Rocky to her other pets, which include a cat and two dogs. She noticed how lonely Rocky was, so despite the breeders’ advice, she decided to let Rocky play with her small, six-pound cat. After some intial wariness, the two became best friends . Both sleep on Cathy’s bed and Cathy says Rocky “Seems like a normal cat to me, but he’s wilder.” Just like her other cat, Rocky “Plays with feathers and toys and he will come to me for love.” Although Cathy has yet to introduce Rocky to her dogs, she has shown him to her friends, who all adore him and come over just to see him. Since not everyone can have their own Rocky, Hopperton encourages people to visit the Savannah Cat Shoppe so that they can at least see a Savannah cat up close. Anyone is allowed to walk into the store and watch the adorable kittens play with each other and anyone can interact with the older cats, which are very friendly. Without a doubt, you will leave the Savannah Cat Shoppe desperately wanting to take home your own kitten, though at least owning a Savannah cat is more realistic than keeping a zoo animal as a pet.

acebook has taken center stage in most teenagers’ lives, but the social networking site can lead to some serious consequences due to the content posted by or about them. “I didn't even know [the picture] was being taken, so when my mom's friend called me and told me about it I was embarrassed and shocked" said Julie* who had a picture posted on Facebook of her and a boy making out on a party bus. Julie tried reporting the picture many times, but it was not taken down by Facebook's privacy group or the girl who took the picture. According to Facebook's safety and privacy page, anyone can report inappropriate, offensive or dangerous content through “report” links found on almost every page of Facebook. Social reporting gives people the option to report content, send a copy of the content to a trusted friend, or block the person who posted it. However, if the picture is not a violation of their Statement of Rights and Responsibilities the complaint will be disregarded. In Julie’s case, her future may not be as harshly affected as those who find photos of themselves engaging in illegal activities, such as underage drinking or illegal drug use. For *Camille a picture with a bottle of alcohol on a Facebook page affected her chances of being accepted into a student leadership program. "I wanted to be honest, so when I was asked if I had ever drank [alcohol] I said yes and also shared that there was a picture on Facebook,” Camille said. Camille believed her honesty would help her with acceptance into the program, but "instead of being

acknowledged for my honesty I was judged and in the end rejected." Camille is in the process of applying to colleges and has revised her Facebook page to eliminate material that could negatively affect her admission. A 2011 survey of college admissions departments at 359 top colleges found that 24 percent of admissions officers use social networking sites as one way to evaluate their applicants. Of colleges making use of the online information, 12 percent said that what they saw "negatively affected" their views of the applicant, according to the survey by the education company Kaplan. The open communication offered by Facebook and other modern technologies can often be just as risky as they are convenient. “I always tell Julie [that] if you don’t want [a picture] on the Internet, then don’t take it,” said Julie’s mom in response to the photo of her daughter that surfaced. Sexting is another concern that comes with modern technology, and a new iPhone application called “Snapchat,” which has recently become popular among teenagers, facilitates sending questionable or nude images without apparent consequences for either the sender or receiver. According to Apple, the distributor, the application enables a new form of communication they call “picture chatting.” The application enables a user to take a picture and send it to another person with the application. The sender chooses how long they want the picture to remain on the receiver’s phone. The picture can be shown for 1-10 seconds and if a screenshot is taken the sender is notified. Snapchat is rated for ages 12 and older for infrequent/mild sexual content or nudity and the ability to 'sext' with this application has crossed the minds of some teens. Riley* has the application and uses it frequently. "It's a fun way to send ugly pictures of yourself and be able to control how long the other person sees it for," Riley said. Riley thinks the application is innocent, yet it has crossed her mind that people could use it to send nude pictures. "I do think [Snapchat] could be abused and used to send nude pictures. I definitely don't doubt that it happens" said Riley. As underage teenagers sending nude photos is considered child pornography, in California sexting can result in the sender being charged with creating, distributing and possessing child pornography. According to The Associated Press and MTV, 24 percent of teens aged 14-17 have been involved in "some type of naked sexting," either via cell phone or on the Internet in 2009. Given the ease of modern communication and with college applications looming and job interviews not too far off, it is especially important to consider the unintended consequences before hitting “post.” As Julie’s mother suggests, if the repercussions of uploading a photo could possibly be damaging, it is probably best not to upload it at all. *names changed to protect privacy

style according to... GRACE WESELAK Fashion provides an outlet to express yourself as an individual. I’ve never labeled myself as creative, but when I’m picking out something to wear I feel like an artist; the clothes and accessories are the paint and my body the canvas. My style is not preppy or grunge or any other extreme because I like to experiment with all different kinds of style, which is what fashion is all about. No one would get anywhere without trying anything new. the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen said it best, “It’s a new era in fashion - there are no rules. It’s all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and-coming designers all together.” Fashion isn’t about wearing all of the hottest designers or trying to look as hipster as possible, it’s about finding your own style and wearing what you like. Every once and a while I’ll splurge on a pricier item, but I also love to go thrift store shopping and find quirky cheap things that no one else will have. At the end of the day, style is all about wearing something you feel good in.
