Pre-Prep and Prep School edition Friday 29 April 2022 Summer Term

Acting Head of Prep School’s Message Mr G Thomas Culminating in a brilliant St. Georges Day celebration in the Prep School, it has been another excellent week in the Prep and Pre-Prep, full of excitement and vibrancy. I have been delighted to learn from the pupils in Year 6 just how much they grasped from their visit to the National Gallery on Monday and the way in which Year 2 pupils are becoming increasingly accustomed to life in the Prep School after completing tours with Ms Huggett. A specific highlight this week was watching a Year 5 pupil take part in climbing club on Tuesday. Despite, at one point, asking to come down from the wall, I was so proud at the way in which he persevered to get to the top. His struggle was overcome with sheer ambition and courage that allowed him to achieve his goal, and it was wonderful to observe his peers, unprompted, congratulate him at the end. It is this sense of community that makes Habs such a special place to be. It was wonderful to see many of you at the recent trip information evenings in the Prep School and I look forward to speaking to many more of you in the weeks to come. I wish you and your families a very relaxing weekend.

Important Information Homework policy review F R O M : M R PA U L S W I N D E L L As we are currently reviewing our homework policy and schedule, we would welcome and greatly appreciate any feedback from our parent community. Homework is a key facet in our pupils’ learning: it prepares our pupils for life in the Senior School, assists with developing independent working patterns and organisational skills, progresses pupil understanding and also helps our teachers prepare for future lessons. Please click here to complete a survey providing any thoughts and comments related to this matter by Friday 6 May.

Tooled Up

Swimming Notification FROM: MISS KIM BRANDON A polite reminder to parents that it is our expectation that all pupils who are in school take part to the full timetable, including swimming. It is important that pupils who are not well enough to take part in the curriculum remain home to recover. If your child needs to be excused from swimming, please email me: brandon_k@habsboys.org.uk and copy in your child’s Form tutor. Thank you.

I N F O R M AT I O N Prep and Pre-Prep pupils have started their RSE topics in PSHCEE this term. This is an integral part of the academic curriculum in educating the pupils about their future lives. It is likely your child might also want to discuss some of these topics at home this term, in addition to asking further questions that seek clarity of things they are unsure of. To aid these discussions, please click here to see this fantastic resource from Tooled Up that provides some guidance on how to approach such conversations as well as practical resources that might help your child verbalise their thoughts.

Music Musical performances at the Pre-Prep In assembly last week we were entertained by two very talented musicians, Zonghan (1SS) and Ethan (2NY). This week was the turn of Shiv (2NY) and Isaac (2NY), who played the piano with great skill showing their control of dynamics and musical performance.

School Community Year 1 Weaving

In Art, our Year 1 pupils have been weaving placemats. Their curiosity was evident when learning this new skill; developing their motor skills and improving their handeye co-ordination. We have been very proud to watch them collaborate and build on their problem solving while mastering the technique.

Easter Egg collection for Afghan refugees During the Spring Term, Rudra (9M1) and Ish (5NB) collected Easter eggs from family and friends and delivered them to Afghan refugee children.

St George’s Day The Prep celebrated St George’s Day on Friday 27 April. Members of staff and the pupils will be wearing red or combination of red and white to represent the Patron Saint. The Prep School community will also be raising money for Save The Children. During the day, they will be welcoming speaker Roger Marsden who works with Save The Children, having a bake sale which will include some fabulous treats from those in Georges House and at lunchtime there will be a jumping jacks competition!

Mr Gareth Thomas’ wedding Congratulations to Mr Thomas who got married over the Easter break! From everyone at Habs, we wish Mr Thomas and his wife Christine a long and happy life together.

Sports IAPS National U11 Table Tennis Finals Four Year 6 pupils travelled to Edge Grove School to take part in the IAPS National U11 Table Tennis Finals, joining over 20 other schools and represented the school magnificently. Rahul (6RP) performed fantastically, winning all of his group games before falling to the eventual 3rd place finisher in his quarter final match. The performance of the day must, however, go to Rohan (6SA) who fought his way to the semi finals, eventually finishing 4th. We are incredibly proud of how all the pupils performed. Well done to all!

Pupil challenges himself to 10k Over the Easter holiday, Jayden (6RP) took part in a 10k run whilst on holiday in the USA. Jayden embodied the school values of courage and community with this self-set challenge: courage with his determination to run the 10k, a tremendous achievement for him as he continues to battle a foot condition that makes running long distances a real challenge, and community as he contributed to the raising of money that allows underprivileged children the opportunity to learn music. Well done, Jayden!
