WELCOME I am delighted to welcome boys, staff, parents, governors and friends of the School to our Gala Concert here at the Barbican Centre, London this evening. It has become something of a tradition for the School to perform here at the Barbican and it is a relationship that has reaped some breathtaking and memorable performances over the years. It is such a wonderful way to showcase the outstanding talent we have at Haberdashers’ in one of the country’s finest auditoriums. An event of this magnitude relies upon the continued support and commitment of parents, staff and boys, all of whom work tirelessly to prepare performances of the very highest standards. I am immensely proud of the work that our boys have put in and I wish them all the very best of luck for tonight’s concert. I am sure you will all enjoy what promises to be a most entertaining evening.

Peter Hamilton Headmaster

FOREWORD FROM THE SECOND MASTER AND EXECUTIVE HEAD OF THE PREPARATORY AND PRE-PREPARATORY SCHOOLS It is a pleasure and a privilege for me to welcome you all to the Barbican for what promises to be a wonderful showpiece in our whole School Calendar. I am particularly pleased that the Preparatory School continues to play a prominent role at this wonderful event, reflecting the huge part that music plays in the life of both our Preparatory and Pre-Preparatory Schools. I am ever grateful to parents for their continued support, to our staff for all their hard work in preparing for such a large-scale event, and most of all, to our boys who continue to do us proud, performing to the highest standards. The Preparatory School has been a hive of activity in recent weeks and the sense of anticipation and excitement amongst the boys has been appreciable. I am sure you will struggle to resist the temptation to join in with our own rendition of ‘The Sound of Music’. Please be generous in your applause for all the items you hear this evening and I sincerely hope you enjoy this terrific occasion.

MEDLEY FROM THE SOUND OF MUSIC Maria

Edelweiss

She climbs a tree and scrapes her knee Her dress has got a tear She waltzes on her way to Mass And whistles on the stair And underneath her wimple She has curlers in her hair I even heard her singing in the abbey

Edelweiss, Edelweiss Every morning you greet me Small and white, clean and bright You look happy to meet me Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow Bloom and grow forever Edelweiss, Edelweiss Bless my homeland forever

She’s always late for chapel But her penitence is real She’s always late for everything Except for every meal I hate to have to say it But I very firmly feel Maria’s not an asset to the abbey I’d like to say a word in her behalf Maria makes me laugh How do you solve a problem like Maria? How do you catch a cloud and pin it down? How do you find a word that means Maria? A flibbertijibbet! A will-o’-the wisp! A clown! Many a thing you know you’d like to tell her Many a thing she ought to understand But how do you make her stay And listen to all you say How do you keep a wave upon the sand? Oh, how do you solve a problem like Maria? How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

The Lonely Goatherd High on a hill was a lonely goatherd Loud was the voice of the lonely goatherd Folks in a town that was quite remote heard Lusty and clear from the goatherd’s throat heard A prince on the bridge of a castle moat heard Men on a road with a load to tote heard Men in the midst of a table d’hote heard Men drinking beer with the foam afloat heard One little girl in a pale pink coat heard She yodeled back to the lonely goatherd Soon her Mama with a gleaming gloat heard What a duet for a girl and goatherd One little girl in a pale pink coat heard She yodeled back to the lonely goatherd Soon her Mama with a gleaming gloat heard What a duet for a girl and goatherd Happy are they lay-dee o lay-dee lee o Soon the duet will become a trio Climb Every Mountain Climb every mountain Search high and low Follow every byway Every path you know Climb every mountain Ford every stream Follow every rainbow ‘Till you find your dream A dream that will need All the love you can give Every day of your life For as long as you live Climb every mountain Ford every stream Follow every rainbow ‘Till you find your dream

Do-Re-Mi Do, a deer, a female deer Re, a drop of golden sun Mi, a name I call myself Fa, a long, long way to run So, a needle pulling thread La, a note to follow So Ti, a drink with jam and bread That will bring us back to Do When you know the notes to sing You can sing most anything

ZADOK THE PRIEST Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anointed Solomon King. And all the people rejoiced, and said: “God save the King! Long live the King! God save the King! May the King live for ever! Amen! Amen! Alleluia!

JERUSALEM (Boys)

(All)

And did those feet in ancient time

Bring me my Bow of burning gold!

Walk upon England’s mountains green?

Bring me my Arrows of desire!

And was the holy Lamb of God

Bring me my Spear! O clouds, unfold!

On England’s pleasant pastures seen?

Bring me my Chariot of fire!

And did the Countenance Divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among those dark Satanic Mills?

I will not cease from Mental Fight, Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand, Till we have built Jerusalem In England’s green and pleasant land.
