The theme of this year’s Veritas is Philosophy, Theology, and Film, and it has been a delight to read such diverse and riveting essays on the topic. The philosophy of film is now a firmly established subset of that branch of philosophy devoted to conceptual and theoretical inquiry into art and aesthetic experience. A brief exploration here at the start of the meaning of two technical terms – “mimesis” and “hermeneutics” –will help focus the key questions that will accompany us later.
