Writing my fi rst magazine introduction as Head of Junior School has put me in a refl ective mood, which seems right as Greenhouse is in essence a refl ection of the school year just ended. My journey at Habs has spanned 5 years, starting as a Year 6 teacher and Phase Leader, Deputy Head and now Head. Along the way I have come across many amazing pupils and been astounded by their love of learning. There is nothing quite like the feeling you get when you see that spark of enthusiasm in a pupil’s eyes and feel the buzz of the school as you walk the corridors.
The main strength of the school is in the celebration of the individual, but I recognise many attributes in common with all our pupils. Junior School pupils are inquisitive, courageous, positive learners, and have resilience in abundance. This year these attributes have come into their own as we have faced trials none of us could have predicted. Despite the lockdown and having to get to grips with remote learning, you have remained committed to your education and have risen to the very real challenges presented by learning away from physical school. Your positivity and resilience have shone through, and the Junior School community has remained strong.
Being back in the building and starting my day every morning greeting every pupil as you enter the school is a joy. I am reminded each day of the reason why my colleagues work so hard and have gone above and beyond this year to ensure that you have had a great year. This is refl ected in the pages of this edition of Greenhouse.
It is appropriate that the year has culminated with the ‘100 challenge’ across the Junior School, inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore. From 100 smiles to 100 keepie uppies, to 100 school rule infringements to 100 lengths between 2 trees. Never content to wind down at the end of an academic year, the Junior School has used the fi nal term to come together as a community, raising money in honour of a great pandemic hero. Your positive spirit has shone through in everything you have achieved.
I am incredibly proud to be Head of the Junior School and hope that you all feel proud of yourselves as you leaf through this fantastic souvenir of the incredible year we have had.
