Habs Weekly Junior School edition Friday 24 June 2022 Summer Term
Head of Junior School’s Message Mrs L Flynn Sports day, Welcome to Habs and Induction Evenings have given cause for the Junior School community to gather in different ways this week, both celebrating and marking the end of one year, whilst looking forwards to the next. During induction evening I spoke of the importance of relationships in education and the community coming together, in person, as we emerge from the pandemic. This is even more important as we consider our responsibility to be aware of and respond to any lasting impact of the past few years. Whether thinking about relationships with friends, family members or within the school community, time together is beneficial for all. The tooled-up resource offers opportunities for discussions and activities for all ages; one that particularly caught my eye this week is linked below, which speaks to the benefits that acts of kindness bring to ourselves and the community. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. 100 Acts of Kindness - Tooled Up Education

They were joined by a professional group of singers who were all recent graduates from Cambridge University who were Choral Scholars at St John’s and Homerton Colleges. The repertoire for the service was Stanford’s Evening Service in C major and Charles Wood’s rousing anthem O Thou The Central Orb. Congratulations to the 11 pupils who sang for performing challenging repertoire to such a high standard. The singers and members of the church community who were present were so impressed and are excited about having us return to sing in the future.

Tooled up At our Induction Evening on Tuesday, Mrs Flynn reflected on how valuable the relationships are that we have within our school community, and how precious it is to be able to spend time face to face with one another. In that spirit, below are some suggestions from Tooled Up, either to reflect on as parents, or activities to use as starting points for you and your children to discuss or do together.

Cornflower Assembly 17 June Friday afternoon assemblies are always a time of joy and celebration in the Junior School. Our weekly Cornflower Assembly celebrates individuals who have particularly demonstrated ways in which they have embodied our school values: Courage, Curiosity, Community and Ambition. Without fail, the pupils in our school community celebrate the successes of their peers, as well as take time to reflect on the ways in which they have, themselves, taken risks, wondered why, supported others and aimed high. We all love Cornflower Assemblies, and hope that you enjoy celebrating weekly with us too.
Ambition
Community
We set our sights high in terms of what we want to achieve as individuals and as a community, in and outside the classroom, aspiring to achieve our full potential in whatever we put our minds to.
Since we were founded, we have had an inherent responsibility to our diverse internal and wider community and continue to dedicate ourselves to nurturing it and supporting each other to be our best selves.

Sport ESSA National Swimming Gala On Saturday 18 June, four students in Year 6 took part in the English Schools’ Swimming Association 26th Team Championships for Primary schools in Sheffield. They did exceptionally well to qualify for this very prestigious event in both the Medium Schools’ 4 x 25m Freestyle relay and Medium Schools’ 4 x 25m Medley relay. All swimmers swam their fastest, demonstrated efficient changeovers and showed excellent team work throughout the gala. Carmen (6 Aesc), Isabel (6 Aleph), Jessica M (6 Aleph) and Bella (6 Aesc) swam in heats and finals at the competition. Overall they finished in 17th place in the Medium Schools’ 4 x 25m Freestyle relay and 13th place in the Medium Schools’ 4 x 25m Medley relay. Huge congratulation to all four students and their parents for their encouragement and support throughout the gala.
Year 5 & 6 Watford and District 6-a-side Football Tournament On Saturday 18 June Habs Junior School entered two football teams into the Watford and District 6 Aside Tournament. Both teams had to play some really tough opposition. Little Green, one of the sides we had to play, had recently placed 5th in a national football final. It was a steep learning curve, as seven of my sixteen players had never played in a competitive match for Habs. What impressed me most was the enthusiasm and teamwork shown by both teams. Team 2 was knocked out after the league stage. During their last match Maya scored what I would happily classify as the goal of the season from the halfway line. Team 1 qualified second in their league and then were knocked out 1 – 0 after having played brilliantly in the semi-final against Little Green. For me as the coach my morning was littered with many fabulous moments. My proudest one was when Habs Girls received a Fair Play award, voted for by the other competing teams.
Sport KS2 Sports Day The thrill of sports day hung in air as the audience gathered. KS2, waited on their 2 tracks with sheer excitement, eager to start the first proper sports day in three years. Everybody enthusiastically cheered and supported their house teammates in the last race as they did in the first race and everyone gave it their all in every event they participated in.
Amber 4 Aleph said:“I really enjoyed watching and supporting everyone in their races. It was hot but lots of fun and I loved participating” Aardvarks were the combined winners 2022. Year 3-6 We would like to give a special thanks to everybody who participated, the P.E. staff and teachers who supported, the groundsmen for setting up and maintaining the field, the caterers for providing refreshments, and the parents for watching.
School Community Y1 Paradise Wildlife Park Year 1 enjoyed a very sunny trip to Paradise Wildlife Park last Friday. Despite the heat we managed to see lots of different animals including penguins, lions and tigers. We watched a fantastic bird show and went on a dinosaur hunt. We spotted lots of different dinosaurs on our hunt and we were even squirted by water by some of them!

Changeover morning There was a buzz around the Junior School on Tuesday morning as students in Rainbow to Year 5 spent time with their new teachers and classes for next academic year and we also welcomed our new joiners into Habs. Introductions, games, crafts, quizzes and stories were some of the activities enjoyed and these sessions generated lots of excitement for next year.
