Our Values Our brand values are what we hold dear as a school, the core beliefs that we stand for. They should drive all decisions and actions.

Ambition

We set our sights high in terms of what we want to achieve as individuals and as a community, in and outside the classroom, aspiring to achieve our full potential in whatever we put our minds to.

Curiosity

In a diverse world, we believe that growth comes from not standing still. We are driven by an unending desire to learn and improve, not standing still and having an open and enquiring mind to anything we face.

Courage

We believe in the courage to face challenge, embrace opportunity and step out of our comfort zones to grow and become our best selves, whilst also having courage in our conviction, remaining true to our moral compass and what we believe is the right thing to do.

Community

Since we were founded, we have had an inherent responsibility to our diverse internal and wider community and continue to dedicate ourselves to nurturing it and supporting each other to be our best selves.

The School Day The school grounds open at 8am each day and close at 5.45pm. Students may arrive at school from 8am, at which time they must enter via the Dining Room door and remain in the supervised Dining Room until 8.20am. If your child remains after 4pm they must attend a supervised activity or go to the Library to study. Please encourage your child to be ‘car aware’ around site including knowing to not use listening devices when walking on the pavement. During the winter months, we recommend putting reflective strips on their bags and coats.

After School The school day ends at 4pm. The Early Coaches depart at 4.15pm. After school activities end at 5.15pm in good time for students to head to the Late Coaches at 5.30pm. It is important that your child is aware that 5.30pm coach routes often differ from the 4.15pm routes and might not include their usual stop. If you are collecting your child, please pick them up from the Girls’ School Visitor Carpark. Please do not drive through the Girls’ School to collect them.

Drama Drama at Habs is about creating an inclusive community and developing a love of the Arts. We work collaboratively, both in class and in our extensive co-curricular programme, encouraging students to develop their skills, confidence and experience. All aspects of theatre are explored, and students have the opportunity to take leading roles backstage as Stage Managers, Lighting and sound technicians, working on the costume and make-up teams or making props. Recently we have hosted several professional make-up and theatre design workshops to support our curriculum, alongside workshops for examination students with leading theatre companies and practitioners. We offer the Arts Award qualification throughout the Senior School and take the whole of the Lower Five to the theatre as part of this programme. School productions feature heavily in our co-curricular programme and we offer a range of plays and musicals. We usually stage a Senior play for students in Year 10 and above and a middle school play for year 7,8 and 9. Recent productions include’ ‘Wendy and Peter Pan’, ‘The Glove Thief’, The Crucible’ and ‘Emilia’. Popular lunchtime clubs are run by Lower 6 students and small-scale workshop performances take place each term. Each year we take part in the Shakespeare Coram Schools Festival and enter local Festivals.

Music The advantages for taking up a musical instrument at a young age are evident:

“In terms of brain development, musical performance is every bit as important educationally as reading or writing.” - All-Parliamentary Group for Music Education

“A Primary School in Bradford which was 3.2% behind the national average moved to being 21% ahead of the national average over seven years by providing up to six hours of music every week to all children.” - The Guardian

“Anatomists today would be hard put to identify the brain of a visual artist, a writer or a mathematician - but they would recognise the brain of a professional musician without a moment’s hesitation.” - Oliver Sacks

Sport

At Habs, sport plays an integral part of school life. Engaging in sport and physical activities is key to cultivating team spirit, positive relationships, and pride in both individual and team achievements. Our ambition is to provide all students with opportunities to play within a tiered structure of sporting levels which caters from Participation to Performance. We have opportunities for activity at all levels; social and recreational activities, aimed at developing an understanding of how exercise can positively affect health and wellbeing, Inter House events, and of course, numerous competitive fixtures with other schools. We field teams in all our sports and activities, and students of all standards will have regular chances to represent the school and/or their house throughout the year. Participation rates are exceptionally high with Habs students embracing the opportunity to get involved with such a broad and diverse sporting programme.

Assemblies The Senior School tends to begin the school day with time either as a form, year group, House or as a whole school to share values and explore ideas. Once a week, we have our multi-faith assemblies, where each week a different group of students share their experience of and take on their own faith. We encourage all students to attend assemblies with an open mind and a genuine eagerness to understand another point of view. We have a multi-faith room which students can request use of. For example, prayers at lunchtime.
