The Memory Jar
The Memory Jar
In March 2020 we went overnight from being a school that existed as a community in one location to an online school community based in over 1000 homes. This unprecedented time of lockdown made us all shape our own lives and experiences in surprising and multi-directional ways. In March 2021 as we emerged back into familiar surroundings we started to share our memories and talk about our varied experiences. We felt that these memories of this challenging year should be recorded for future Habs generations and so the Haberdashers’ in Lockdown Project was created with students and staff sharing achievements in written and visual form. Written memories were initially recorded online and subsequently physically recorded and stored in the Memory Jar below.
Preface
Headmistress, Mrs Rose Hardy
I am delighted that Habs has created and curated this beautiful Memory Jar which captures a period in our history as a school and as a society for which we were unprepared, but that we faced as a community with fortitude, determination and good humour. I am hugely proud of the School’s response to the pandemic and the creative ways that individuals, classes, year groups, Houses and departments strove not just to get through it but actually make things better. We have all learnt so much about ourselves and our fellow humans since the start of Covid and I sincerely hope that we remember those lessons; this jar is our Habs memories. I am so grateful to those students and staff who have contributed and put a little piece of themselves into Habs history. Snowdrops… Haberdashers’ is renownded for beautiful snowdrops which blanket the grounds at the beginning of spring. Snowdrops bring hope and mark the start of seasonal change. This photo of Snowdrops was taken by Mrs Hardy and was presented to the whole school during an assembley to inspire hope that the return to classroom based learning would come soon.

The Memory Jar
Message to all students and staff sent out April 2021 “Over the coming two weeks we are all going to take part in a whole school art project to record our thoughts and feelings about the Covid pandemic. We are creating a memory jar which will contain a personal memory from each and every one of the school community and, in the box below, we would like you to write a short sentence reflecting on a positive experience during what was a historical year. Your response will be anonymous (you can add your name if you wish) so you can say how much you enjoyed teaching your older sister or liked not wearing school uniform. It could be about getting a pet; online lessons; helping in your community; learning a new skill or fund raising. In future, when the memory jar is opened, the next generation of Habs students can read all about the school community and what we all achieved over the year. From lockdown to testing; from mask wearing to online virtual school trips; experiments in the kitchen to building theatres in boxes and writing plays. As well as The Memory Jar we will be asking you to contribute to an enormous Habs Artwork. You will receive an A5 postcard. We would like you to get as creative as you wish with this, the only constraint is size. Thank you and good luck. “

The year of Covid 19 has not been an easy one, however there are definitely some positives like how we have all become more independent in studies and Extracurricular activities; being in lockdown has also made us appreciate the things we are gifted with and taught us not to take them for granted! So as a summary, this year wasn't easy and at times was very unlikeable but without it we could've lost some key skills which are helping us strive in the growing modern soceity. The Memory Jar
"Dear anyone who is reading this, Hi! My name is Elena and well, these last two years have been an experience, for sure. From isolating, to wearing masks and queuing outside Waitrose, I wouldn’t change anything. The pandemic made me learn to not take family for granted and to cherish the amazing moments in the past. The date is Thursday 18th March 2021 16:39 and I’ve forgotten my iPad and have now missed the coach which is great (sarcasm). Anyways, whoever is reading this, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, and remember that. Have a lovely day, morning, weekend, evening, whenever! Thank you for reading this! It makes me very happy! Yours sincerely, Elena Erceg"
