HOMO UTOPICUS

HADA Contemporar y is pleased to present a group exhibition showcasing meticulously constr ucted enigmatic hybrid spaces inviting the viewer to the non-existent utopia of mind. For thousands of year s and still human beings dream of perfect wor lds, wor lds free of conflict, injustice and unhappiness. Like the biblical Garden of Eden, many a men as Plato (427 - 347 BC) in Republic (380 BC) and Tao Yuanming (365 - 427) in The Peach Blossom Spring (421) have been searching for the ideal community or society. Oftentimes, the classical utopias encouraged the creation of novel humanity or community resor ting to fictional means. With the global advent of technological civilisation with ethical reconstr uction, the concept of utopia has shifted significantly towards sustainable new ways in which society relates to nature. ‘The key to the future cannot be found in a transformation of human nature; on the contrar y, it requires a revolution in the relation between human culture and nature.’ [1] Yet, the duality in the meaning of ‘utopia’ as ‘no place’ or ‘nowhere’ from the Greek ou-topos coined in Utopia (1516) by Sir Thomas More and ‘good place’ from the identical Greek word eu-topos suggests the fundamental question whether a perfect wor ld can exist or be realised. The question remains to the reasons for the constant presence of utopia through human histor y or why humanity has always manifested an impelling, unsuppressible, need for utopia. According to the study by Cosimo Quar ta, on anthropological bases the species ‘homo’ has been characterised, since its origins, by its ‘restlessness’, by the ‘search for new possibilities’, thus moving beyond purely sensible data, to go beyond immediate perception and therefore to ‘fore-see’ that which is ‘not yet’ actually visible, that is, perceivable by the senses. [2] This restlessness continuously urges humanity to explore and accomplish things that had never been done before. Thus, Pfeiffer argues that human restlessness represents ‘for cultural evolution what genetic mutation represents for organic evolution, and built-in source of novelty and increasingly complex patterns of life – the source, indeed, of the human spar k’. As cultural evolution as well as organic evolution originates from the imperfection, mutation and error s, there are always slip-ups, social mutations, in the wor king of human laws and institutions. And the self-feeding restlessness of humanity ensures the sor t of failure that makes cultural evolution and sur vival possible. [3] Humanity remains therefore suspended between a fiercely desired perfection and the knowledge that it will never be tr uly reached. [4] This incapability of satisfaction generated through the perpetual gap between ‘is’ and ‘ought to be’ encourage our habit of por traying our society as desolated contemporar y urban space where violence, anxiety and lonesomeness populates. The utopian is not an accidental and transient fact, but essential character of the human species. Then what is the purpose of ar t in this exhaustive decaying wor ld? The purpose of ar t has been discussed throughout the histor y of philosophy and near ly ever y major philosopher has commented on ar t, including Aristotle, Plato, Kant and other s. In recent era, ar t has enjoyed its elevated status and the impor tance as a medium that enables to nur ture interdisciplinar y discour ses, debates and creativity via archives and education and instigate communication under the diver se ar tistic platforms as museums and galleries. Despite the fact and the effor t to promote ‘public’ under standing and enjoyment of ar t, restricted and confined psychological accessibility regardless of physical accessibility limits the experiences of ar t thus questioning its purpose. Intriguingly, in his most recent essay ‘Ar t as Therapy’, Alain de Botton argues that ar t ‘can reawaken us to the genuine merit of life’ through changing how we experience the wor ld.

02 | 03

‘… ar t has the power to extend our capacities beyond those that nature has originally endowed us with. Ar t compensates us for cer tain inborn weaknesses, in this case of the mind rather than the body, weaknesses that we can refer to as psychological frailties… ar t is a therapeutic medium that can help guide, exhor t and console its viewer s, enabling them to become better ver sions of themselves.’ [5] Among the numerous and conflicting definitions of ar t therapy since the mid-20th centur y, it is generally agreed to describe the therapeutic application of ar t making rather than seeing and often used to a wide range of people with difficulties, disabilities or diagnoses. [6] Broadening its application, De Botton arises the possibility of its therapeutic influence on a wider public through open and active psychological par ticipator y spectator ship. Piet Mondrian considered ar t as ‘a pro-active attempt to establish a utopia on ear th’ through his abstract neoplastic paintings to reveal a non-material, univer salist utopia based on the balancing of archetypal opposites during the turn of the 20th centur y when nihilism was per vasive and ideological impasses were exacerbated by the outbreak of the series of cr uel events. [7] The ‘nonexistence’ of utopia, far from leading to nihilism and to desperation, leads humanity towards hope, spurring it towards moral and str uctural transformation, and therefore towards the constr uction of a society that is to be, as far as is possible, better than the one in which human beings find themselves living. [8] The visual presentation of non-existing fantastical hybrid space and the utopian nature of the ar twor ks in this exhibition generate not only the oppor tunity for the audiences for sincere retrospection of oneself and wor lds, but also imaginar y space where viewer s create their own utopia of mind.

‘Ar t therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses ar t media as its primary mode of communication. It is practiced by qualified, registered Art Therapists who work with children, young

people, adults and the elderly. Clients who can use ar t therapy may have a wide range of difficulties, disabilities or diagnoses. These include, for example, emotional, behavioral or mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, life-limiting conditions, brain-injury or neurological conditions and physical illness. Art therapy may be provided for groups, or for individuals, depending on clients’ needs. It is not a recreational activity or an art lesson, although the sessions can be enjoyable. Clients do not need to have any previous experience or expertise in ar t.’, What is Ar t Therapy, The British Association of Ar t Therapists, n.d. p. 1 <http://baat.org/What_is_Art_Therapy.pdf> [7]
