Library De Aanzet

Assignment The National Library of the Netherlands, De Aanzet, was one of the first establishments where I garnered experience as a design intern. I spent just under 6 months as design lead for a featured event called “Taalclash”. During this time I assisted with weekly assignments such as our events program and other marketing focused work. The pictures shown were used to promote a new reading group for teenagers called “The Bookies” which we provided to social media and publications for maximum exposure.

03 Branding Gemar

Assignment Gemar is a parent company that hired me to produce new branding which desired a neutral logo for universal appeal. The client sought a logo that incorporated the ‘G’ in their name into a picturesque lake that represents the landscape local to their head office in Minnesota. Early iterations of the logo were purple but this was altered to emphasise the blue water that is a prominent feature in the state of the land-of-many-lakes. I provided various designs that differed in font and palette in order to give the client a full range of options, before settling on the final logo.

04 Ilustrative Logos

Assignment The following illustrations are proposals I worked on for internet personalities and influencers. The primary objective was to create graphics that were clear and recognisable which could be used as channel branding in addition to logos. I took great pride in making the logos because the graphics are bold and striking, which is due to the style of line art that I used in Adobe Illustrator.

Facebook Banners

Social Media I was fortunate enough to have been involved in multiple internships. One of my responsibilities, other than working on regular assignments, was to maintain the social media content. My first position gave me an opportunity to develop my skills constructing posts, banners and advertisements as my employers provided outsourced social media to external businesses.

Assignment These banners were made specifically for charity and Christmas events following the guidelines of an existing brand.

06 Character Design

Freelance I began working on commissions during my time in higher education. These requests come from people across the globe and include branding, illustration and logos as well as a high demand for character concept artwork. The appeal for character designs comes from the rising popularity of role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons; players create a character for an adventure, akin to authors in works of fiction, and enjoy seeing the embodiment of their imagination in the form of my artwork. This challenges my abilities because the imagination of my clients has no limits. Characters can be human or something much more exotic like a bird-man or turtle pirate.

Assignment These photographs were taken while attending a graduation ceremony at the Heriot-Watt University situated in the city of Edinburgh. Both graduates completed their study in computer systems and requested photographs which would be appropriate for future job applications.

De Waal Magazine Company Lagrouw Strategische Communicatie, was one of the first establishments that I garnered experience as a design intern. This communication and advertisement agency focuses on branding for large companies, magazine design and providing social media content for other businesses. The primary editing software was in InDesign. As the agency did not have a primary photographer, I was also tasked with taking and preparing photographs for the magazines. This gave me a better understanding of print layout and photo execution.

Assignment This specific magazine is for a carpentry company celebrating their 30 years in the business. I worked on this magazine together with the company’s design lead.

09 Logo Angelus

Company The German mobile nursing service, Angelus, provides care for people who need support in their own home. A mutual acquaintance recommended my work to Angelus and they commissioned an angel styled graphic logo shortly after. I worked on a number of concepts from which they selected the final logo.

Branding LeastExpected Assignment Social media influencers using YouTube and Twitch frequently seek my expertise to create distinct branding. This particular client requested a complete rebranding of their channel. The assignment consisted of designing new logos, emotes, overlays and animated holding screens. The brief included using blue incorporated into the L and E of the channel’s initials. During discussions with the client, we concluded that a polygon design included with the typeset was the most suitable product which conveyed sharp and concise imagery.

Animating This project was where I premiered my skills in Adobe After Effects, outside of my time at the Da Vinci College Dordrecht, by bringing 3 animated screens to life. I was mostly unfamiliar with the software but I relished in the challenge and quickly adapted to it’s nuances, soon completing my first animated work.

Invitation Final Exam Assignment Before my final exam, I was asked to assemble an exhibition which showcased the skills and abilities I had learned while at the college. One of the objectives was to use styles, illustrations, designs and abilities that I had not previously shown. A handful of professors were chosen to attend the exhibition to critique my work which required the creation of an invitation to demonstrate my new capabilities. The theme I elected to use was to present myself as I had been during my first year, as a shy and reserved student, in contrast to the person I had become by my fourth year, confident and comfortable with my own style. To this day I still push myself to grow and change and see the progress I have made.

Website Smootdiensten

Assignment

Smootdiensten put out an open assignment for a website design. They asked for a design that would suit their existing logo and include descriptions and links to subsidiary companies. The branding uses a non-serif font, orange and blue colours, with no fading or shading. The website had to consist of a single page with space for text. The company provides internet services, so the colours within the branding were chosen to emphasise a professional appearance while maintaining simplicity without alienating clientele. I used this information in preparing my final design.

Merchandise Ozzyy

Assignment

The client, a social media influencer on YouTube named Ozzyy, asked for a logo design that could be utilised for merchandise. The ability for returning viewers to identify and recognise this logo were some of the client’s biggest concerns. His USP (Unique Selling Point) was combining comedy with gaming to create entertaining content.

Contact with the client

After several collaborative sessions and regular contact with the client, he indicated his preference for a tiger as the main feature in the design. The reasoning behind his choice of the tiger is that he appreciated the aesthetics associated with the majestic creature; both the beauty and the strength with which it is respected. We decided to make the aspects of the logo very clean and utilised geometric shapes. The client has a passion for motorcycles and in order for that to come through in the design, I utilised geometric shapes similar to those found in the mechanics associated with this interest. Included in the final design is the process of development design sketches accompanied by client annotation.

Typographic Logo

Assignment The client for this assignment, a major in computer science, asked for a typographic logo of his name. This logo would be applied to his portfolio website and other media sources. The client wanted to include a Xenomorph tail but needed it to look professional and not too recognisable. Since the tail was an important aspect of this design I decided to include these sketches.
