HAFTR PARTICIPATES IN YUNMUN CONFERENCE

Yeshiva University’s National Model UN conference (YUNMUN) attracts a broad array of students from yeshiva high schools around the world. The conference allows students from all over to connect and share ideas while delving into the world of international politics. There are a total of 16 committees, each of which has its own jurisdiction and capabilities, and topics can range from nuclear disarmament to the gender gap in education.

HAFTR’s Model UN team had the opportunity to attend this conference, held in Connecticut on February 5-7, and expand their knowledge on global issues. With a total of 11 delegates, each representing the country of Egypt, the HAFTR team worked tirelessly to prepare by researching Egypt and unique topics. This preparation didn’t come without reward, as I was fortunate enough to receive an honorable mention in The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC).

In addition to allowing students to grow their knowledge, public speaking skills, and collaborative abilities, there is also a fun side to the program. Students of each committee all have a surprise third topic known as a crisis. These crises are often a time to let loose and have fun; whether through intense athletic competition or finding creative ways to protect the world, delegates are able to take a break from the otherwise serious decorum. These crises allow for a meaningful bonding experience between the students and encourage participants to further grow their public speaking and collaboration skills without any prior preparation, which is an important skill to master
