Introduction In our mission to get today’s screen-savvy children back outdoors and active, we have teamed up with Biba who have created a suite of mobile games that are specifically designed to work with the equipment found in your community playground. Research has shown that children in a Biba-powered playground will play longer, harder and much more often. Biba games also have an important side benefit: they translate that healthy gameplay into a series of advanced analytics that parks officers, parish councils, and leisure operators can use to learn more about their community’s play spaces!

Time to Play Biba As parents, we all want our kids to be getting the healthy, active, outdoor and social play that can only be found on a traditional playground. But our children also live in a world where touchscreens can be a little too much fun and screen-time must be carefully managed. Biba solves this dilemma by using a bit of digital gameplay in a smart phone that never leaves the parents’ hands. Available on both iTunes and Google Play, the team at Biba have created a suite of augmented reality, imagination-driven playground games for parents to play with their children aged three to nine.
“No special equipment required. Just download the app and go!”

Playing Biba Biba is designed for children aged 3-9 and adults aged 18 or older. All Biba games open up inclusive play moments for children of all abilities. Parents/guardians should only allow children to play Biba games on age appropriate equipment. For instance, a 4 year old should not play Biba games on play equipment that is not designed for their age. The purpose of Biba is not to encourage increased use of screen technology. Rather, Biba’s inventors accept that screen technology is part of life for most kids today, and the good news is that Biba leverage this fact to encourage more physical play whilst also still maintaining the excitement that comes from engaging with digital gameplay.

Finding the Fun Every Biba game is developed with a unique activity profile and follows a strict “90/10” rule… that is, children must be physically active for at least 90% of the game, with only 10% of their attention ever spent with the screen. The result is “heads up” play that is best for the child, yet actively involves their parents, grandparents or guardian. Our games are best for children aged 3 to 9 and run the range from obstacle courses to treasure hunts to make-believe adventures to team play. We are also developing a suite of wholly inclusive games so that every child is a full participant in the fun, regardless of their level of ability.
“Biba keeps families coming back to the playground again and again.”

Game Choices Biba games are built around a philosophy of embodied play that kindles the child’s imagination while also getting them active and engaged. Games are designed by keeping in mind that children have a wide range of interests and an even broader idea of what is “fun”. Biba’s design philosophy is rooted in years of motivational design and psychology research, as well as physical activity research with child development specialists. The findings not only strongly point to enjoyment of the product by families, but also a confirmation that children get more active on playgrounds when using it.
“When we play, we stimulate creativity, banish worries and create happy memories.”

Installing Biba Biba kits will come with one welcome sign, six Biba markers and installation instructions. The instructions will indicate which tags are to be installed on which equipment type such as swings, slides, bridges and tunnels. Biba markers and welcome signs have a 15 year warranty, the same as many of our other standard products. The six Biba markers are colour coded and each one corresponds to a specific type of equipment. If your playground does not have a specific piece of equipment for one of the tags, that particular tag should not be installed.
“Installation is simple, taking approximately 15 minutes using standard tools.

The Power of Data In summary, Biba games also provide valuable and unique insights into how playground ecosystems function. We use this data to generate a playground profile for each community, where we can establish play patterns that describe peak hours, daily demographics, and the influence of weather on playground attendance…...or even show families personalised activity profiles. In an age of big data, we can harness its power to make play work better for the people in your community. This data can be used to demonstrate return on investment, highlight an increase in physical activity levels and support the basis of a future play strategy. Data reports will be available only through your Area Sales Managers during time intervals that you choose.
“Data can be used to demonstrate return on investment to funders and benefactors.”

In a digital world, where we buy everything online, we entertain ourselves with endless piles of digital content. We categorically ensure that any information generated by gameplay is encrypted, segmented and anonymised to ensure its security.

Case Study Camber Sands, one of Parkdean’s most iconic and busiest holiday parks, wanted a large new play area as part of a major refurbishment of their outdoor facilities. The client was looking for the “wow” factor! HAGS came up with a design to provide as much play value for as many children as possible and introduced Biba to the design to give the play area a different dynamic! The client now has regular access to the Biba data reports. This shows how busy the play area is on what days of the week as well as at what times of the day. It shows how popular certain activities/ games are, and even how the sessions are affected by the weather. This gives the client a unique insight into what play equipment is popular and can also help to guide on future equipment purchases. A snap shot of some of the gathered data and how it is presented in the report is shown on the right.
