Spectacular Opening Event The opening of three exciting new play areas at Radnor Park, Folkestone, was celebrated in spectacular style.
A Grand Opening The opening of three exciting new play areas at Radnor Park, Folkestone, was celebrated by the community in spectacular style with an Opening Event attended by around 700 people. Local residents were treated to goodie bags, snack boxes, smoothies, face painting and balloon modelling at the event and the children loved exploring the new play areas. Cllr David Monk, Leader of Shepway District Council, said: “I’m delighted to see this wonderful equipment. There are so many people, groups and organisations that have helped the project get to this stage, including our own councilors and staff. All that hard work and generous funding is paying off – this is a fabulous example of what we can do when we work together.” Mark Grace, Managing Director, who attended the event said “Everything ran smoothly, the weather was kind to us, there were happy children everywhere and it was one of my proudest moments as MD of HAGS.” The project idea originally came from a local resident, who set up a community group in 2015 to raise funds for an under-utilised area of the park. Working alongside Shepway District Council, the group obtained nearly £400,000 of funding from a number of local partners.
The play facilities will enjoy a fantastic new setting next to the recently opened Radnor Park Tea Room, the restored Victorian water fountain, and a redesigned landscape, with new lawns, flowerbeds and pathways. The play areas include a railway-themed zone with a climbing train and carriages, a tunnel, tracks, turntable roundabout and a station. A raised hill with places for scrambling, perching and climbing centred around a UniPlay unit provides a striking centre piece. Also included are exciting and challenging climbing equipment, a 20m long zip line, along with more traditional swings.

Bellshill Academy, North Lanarkshire This was the largest development of it’s type that North Lanarkshire had carried out in recent times.
Maximising the space HAGS have a long-standing relationship with North Lanarkshire Council having worked on several large projects with them in recent years and were invited to tender for the provision of a large Multi-Use Games Area at Bellshill Academy. The contract was the largest development of this type that North Lanarkshire had carried out and was awarded to HAGS via a competitive process. The eye-catching Multi-Use Games Area, produced and implemented by HAGS, maximised the use of available space and featured an anti-slip polymeric surface to create a multi-purpose zone offering a range of different sports activities. The design encompasses three sports Arenas all with different line-markings, an outdoor fitness area and a warm-up warm-down zone. This is surrounded by a 400m running track and a 65m sprint track. Deputy Head at Bellshill Academy, John McGuire, said “The new MUGA facility has had a hugely positive impact at our school. It has brought a new dimension to PE lessons, allowing staff a far greater range of options in their delivery of lessons. The pupils love using the facility and it has been a boon for after school clubs as well as encouraging pupils to be active at interval and lunchtime.”
Ross Dunn, Play Services Manager at Culture NL (responsible for the management and operation of North Lanarkshire’s cultural services), commented “From the initial contract award through to handover HAGS have continued to meet and exceed our expectations. Throughout the process they worked closely with ourselves and the school to ensure the completed site met all our specifications and carried all of the construction out within the school grounds during term time without a single issue. The on-site contractors were professional and courteous at all times and flexible to the sometimes challenging demands of working within a school environment.” “HAGS provided extensive elements of added value during construction which greatly enhanced the completed development. We would highly recommend them for any projects of a similar nature.”

Staff Profile - Liz Townsend Profile
What are your favourite childhood play memories? I absolutely loved playing in the woods, climbing trees or at the bottom of the garden, making dens. That sense of freedom is getting harder for today’s children to experience, but working with my team at HAGS we can help to recreate some of that adventure in the parks and playgrounds children visit.
Name: Liz Townsend Job Title: Head of UK Proposals Industry Experience: 20 years
What are your biggest challenges?
Liz Townsend has 20 years’ experience in designing outdoor recreation spaces, planning and delivering public consultation and user-led research. As Head of Proposals for HAGS, Liz has at her finger-tips the best of both worlds: a team of talented professionals that design outstanding facilities for public and private sector clients, a broad range of products to meet the needs of all customers regardless of community challenges or budget, and extensive practical experience of how design and planning for public recreation spaces really works in reality. The thing that Liz enjoys most about her role is threefold; helping clients realise their dreams to improve people’s lives; seeing more children and young people engage into active play and seeing families engage in the facility in a way that we’d imagined from the design process.
Our challenge is finding new and innovative ways to create play environments that engage and inspire users while complimenting their setting and surroundings. Thankfully the HAGS Product range gives my team so much flexibility with materials, colours and styles, we can create almost anything! All the while delivering the highest play value possible into a wide range of locations: rural, urban and everything in-between.
Finally, what is your favourite item of play equipment? I’m still a massive fan of climbing! Climbing helps kids find out what they can achieve, how strong they are, it engages all parts of a person: that combination of ambition, concentration, problem solving and physical effort is so rewarding when you make it to the summit (and back down again!) and HAGS have so many products to offer today’s kids these rewarding experiences.

Cost per user value
6
The cost per user divides the purchase price of a product by the total amount of users that item can support at one time.
Get value for your money We know that value is of the utmost importance to our customers, so rather than simply providing the most pieces of equipment for the available budget we take into account the cost per user value and the number of uses a piece of equipment has. Cost per user divides the purchase price of a product by the total amount of users that item can support at one time. Cost per user = Installed price/Number of users. For example, a standard two bay swing set will come with a lower initial cost and is able to support two users. A basket swing, while initially costing slightly more can comfortably support five users at any one time, providing a lower cost per user amount. Another example would be a Seesaw. Our traditional Seesaw, Vippy, can be used by two users, while our Springtime Multi-User Seesaw is able to accommodate six users, with seats big enough for two either side and a large middle platform. There are ways that we can design play areas to appeal to the widest range of visitors, by providing experiences suitable for daytime users, such as parents and toddlers and additionally after school, or weekends, by older children. HAGS’ Viper Swing not only provides a great cost per user, this large rope swing also provides multiple uses, allowing adults to accompany toddlers during the daytime, whilst after school children can cooperate to gain a more exciting experience. A basket swing can be used in a similar way, and of course we have already seen that this kind of swing also offers fantastic value!
Nature Play Our Nature Play range is composed of trim trail units inspired by nature that can be combined in multiple ways to create bespoke play.
For a more natural setting Our Nature Play range is composed of trim trail units inspired by nature that can be combined in multiple ways to create bespoke play. With their organic shapes and earthy hues, the designs are a low visual impact option and will complement nicely a green space. The Nature Play system offers non-prescriptive activity options which encourage children to challenge themselves and use their imagination. Running between obstacles also boosts their fitness levels. The whole range is made from Robinia wood, known for its durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions, decay and vandalism. Its very dense composition makes it ideal for outdoor equipment. RSS Playmakers & HAGS SMP to HAGS We are pleased to announce that RSS Playmakers and HAGS SMP will be reverting to a single brand (HAGS).
Rebranding to HAGS As part of the reorganisation process that we are undertaking, we are pleased to announce that RSS Playmakers and HAGS SMP will be reverting to a single brand (HAGS). The decision to rebrand follows research conducted with our customers and partners from across the country. Many of you told us that a united brand strategy using one brand name is the best way to communicate that we are a seamless organisation with unmatched product and service breadth and geographic reach. We also believe that by marketing our services under one powerful brand with a long history of success across Europe, we will have even greater market impact and become a much stronger organisation. As a result we will be able to provide even more value to you and all of our stakeholders. Once we make the change, you will see the HAGS brand presented in place of the old RSS and HAGS SMP brands in advertising, marketing materials, website and signage. This is an exciting time for HAGS. The rebranding effort builds on many improvements we have made to our business in recent months. This continuing evolution builds an organisation whose value to you, as our customer, increases by the day.
As a valued customer, we wish to assure you that all current contracts that you have with RSS Playmakers or HAGS SMP will remain fully valid and continue to be underwritten by HAGS SMP Ltd. All existing services continue to be seamlessly offered and all UK manufactured ‘SMP’ products continue to be available from our Selby factory along with old or discontinued parts and spares from all legacy brands. It nevertheless remains part of our communication strategy to maintain transparency and to keep customers and stakeholders fully apprised of developments around the name change process. We appreciate your continued confidence in us and your support.
Play Mapping with Biba Biba is a mobile game system that blends the digital play that children love with active outdoor play whilst capturing a cloud of data.
No special equipment required In a mission to get today’s screen-savvy children back outdoors and active, we have teamed up with Biba who have created a suite of mobile games that are specifically designed to work with the equipment found in your community playground. Research has shown that children in a Biba-powered playground will play longer, harder and much more often. Biba games also have an important side benefit: they translate that healthy gameplay into a series of advanced analytics that parks officers, parish councils, and leisure operators can use to learn more about their community’s play spaces. Children now live in a world where touchscreens can be a little too much fun and screen-time must be carefully managed. Biba solves this dilemma by using a bit of digital gameplay in a smart phone that never leaves the parents’ hands. Available on both iTunes and Google Play, the team at Biba have created a suite of augmented reality, imagination-driven playground games for parents to play with their children aged three to nine. For our Biba brochure, or for more information call us now on 0845 260 1655
Play Area Asset Transfer Many principle authorities no longer have the funds to look after some services to the standards the public expect.
Your responsbilities We are very aware that Local Town and Parish Councils are being approached to consider devolved assets and services on an increasingly frequent basis. Many principle authorities no longer have the funds to look after some services to the standards the public expect and so they are becoming more and more run down or are closing. If a Town or Parish Council takes on a Play Area as a community asset they have a responsibility to consider the Inspection and Maintenance regime required to keep the area safe and fully complaint. The European Standard for Playground Safety BS EN 1176 states: “To prevent accidents, the owner or operator should ensure that an appropriate inspection schedule is established for each playground. This should take into account local conditions and the manufacturer’s instructions – both of which can affect inspection frequency.” By working in Partnership with you, HAGS can offer either ‘Inspection Only’ Contracts or ‘Find & Fix’ Contracts so that general maintenance can be carried out at the time of inspection to an agreed set of rates to save down time and save you money. We undertake on-site inspections, repairs and refurbishments on any manufacturer’s equipment (even those who are no longer trading). BS EN 1176 also states: “if serious defects that might put safety at risk are discovered during inspection, these should be corrected without delay.”
All our Operational Inspectors are DBS checked, are RPII qualified and will make sure your play areas are safe and up to the current BS EN Standard allowing children to play safely. We currently have many major inspection and maintenance contracts with Local Authorities, Education Authorities, Housing Associations and Commercial Clients who all have multiple sites to maintain for both public and private use.
