About HAGS Inspiring all generations Play is crucial to the development of children during Early Years and Key Stages 1 and 2. In particular, physical and social interaction in the playground can dramatically improve behaviour inside the classroom. Providing opportunities for outdoor play and learning is also hugely beneficial for children that find the classroom inhibiting. From the beginning HAGS has European and Scandinavian roots and was born during the 1950’s when a small Swedish engineering company took an order for a Swing frame from a local community. When it was installed people started talking about it and the owners saw an opportunity to refocus the company in the production of playground structures. Later during that decade Rune Gustafsson took over as a single owner of the company and used external designers to develop a range of modern steel climbing structures and so the HAGS business we know today was born.
Scandinavian design and culture Scandinavian design represents a design philosophy that’s characterised by functionality, simplicity, and clean lines inspired by nature and the Nordic climate. Our design principles state that products should be made to last rather than be replaced. Nordic culture introduces new possibilities to us all. Exposure to the outdoors and nature has well-known mental and physical health benefits, especially in children. Outdoor play activities are physical ways of interacting with nature that have become increasingly important and a part of everyday family life.
Philosophy Play is an important part of life for children and adults alike. When we play, we stimulate creativity, banish worry, embrace our dreams, and create happy memories. Play is to a child what work is to an adult. Both are serious activities producing valuable results. Play is crucial to the mental and social development of children. HAGS play equipment is designed to encourage plenty of exercise and stimulate the imagination. We promote the health and well-being of children.

It commands attention and reminds us of our duty to each generation in a positive and challenging way. For Architects and Designers who continually seek inspiration in their work, “Inspiring all generations� reminds them of their design challenge, the purpose of their daily efforts. For parents and teachers, it is the crystallization of their hopes, desires and efforts. Internally for HAGS, Inspiring all generations fits perfectly in providing a product development challenge for the next generation. The humanity of the statement also integrates with an internal culture that is approachable, builds consensus, is open and friendly, whilst taking the initiative to realise our goals.
Working with you HAGS provides a full service from design through to installation. We start by creating fresh exciting designs based on consultations with school councils, teachers and PT groups as well as our own personal experiences and the latest industry research. As children are the ultimate experts in play, we visit classrooms to find out what type of playground they want. Talking with school representatives also helps us to assess the site, establish the budget and create a playground that offers plenty of play value, and is accessible to every child whatever their age, ability or disability.
Tailored to fit HAGS use the results of our consultations to develop a bespoke playground that meets specific needs. Our considered designs are tailored with carefully chosen equipment and features, to give children a fun learning experience every time they play. Imaginations and friendships can be developed in enclosed dens and on open top platforms, where children can sit and chat together. Observation points allow children to watch others until they are ready to engage in activities with pairs or groups of children, carers and teachers. Every opinion is considered when creating your unique space.

Key Stages Learning through play Here at HAGS, our aim is to ensure that we can offer every child of school age the opportunity to learn outside the classroom, in an environment suitable to their age and ability. We know children learn through play and can develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and gain in self-confidence, helping them to engage in new experiences and challenges.
For our youngest children, playing and learning are the same thing! We are keen to ensure your outdoor classroom delivers the same Curriculum Outcomes as your indoor classroom. We feel that a balance of child initiated play and imagination can make your Early Years space a magical place.
To continue our learning journey we need to offer progression through our outside activities. We start to include core and specific subjects, and encourage more communication through language, as well as more physical challenges.
Key Stage 2 play and learning can become more of a challenge, particularly in the case of managed risk and physicality. We have developed the most exciting solutions which will encourage even your quietest of children to join in and surpass their own expectations.

SAPCA HAGS is a member of the Sports and Play Construction Association. SAPCA is the UK trade association for the sports facility construction industry and represents specialist constructors and manufacturers of multi-sports equipment and surfacing.
Construction Line HAGS is on the Construction Line UK Register of pre-qualified contractors, which is owned and endorsed by the Department of Trade and Industry. This is a database of contractors who have passed their pre-qualification assessment scheme.
CHAS HAGS is accredited within the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS) having demonstrated compliance with, and sound basic management of health and safety legislation.
RPII HAGS employs Inspection Engineers who are members of the Register of Play Inspectors International Limited (RPII). These Inspectors are qualified to check all your playground equipment and submit a written report with recommendations for any maintenance and repair work.

Early Years/Foundation Beginning the Journey
St Richard’s C of E First School, Evesham St Richard’s Church of England First School, located in Evesham, asked HAGS to refurbish their existing outdoor area located within a restricted space between classroom buildings. The compact design incorporates a multitude of play values including thrilling stepping stones testing pupils’ balance, a climbing adventure wall encouraging physical development and a performance stage providing a role-play area. Imaginative play options were also added including a thrilling race-track graphic coupled with numbers and letters running around the perimeter, as well as an Imagination Playground cart. The design is bursting with sensory play including music panels and a dedicated zone for sand and water play, complemented with coordinated blue and yellow wet-pour surfacing.

Key Stage 1 Developing New Skills
Rowanfield Infant School, Cheltenham HAGS were invited to revive their dilapidated play area which offered limited play value and was significantly underused as the original surfacing was extremely muddy during the winter. The complete redesign incorporates artificial grass surfacing allowing the play area to be used all year round and includes three main zones.

The active zone includes a number of physical activities encouraging pupils to develop their co-ordination, control and movement. The adventure zone provides a number of role play options, aspiring narrators can address an audience comfortably from the storytelling area. The fun zone is split into four sensory play options including sand and water play.

Head Teacher, Aysha Akif, said “The new playground is a huge success! It is a sparkling addition to our school, enabling our little gems to shine”. Aysha tells us “The children enjoy listening to stories and then retelling them and acting them out in the carefully designed story making zones within the playground, it is a wonderful literacy resource to have in an infant school.”

Key Stage 2 Embracing the Challenge
Margaret Wix Primary School, St Albans Head Teacher at Margaret Wix Primary School, Mr Johnston, was looking for something colourful, durable and offering increased challenges for his Key Stage 2 children. The children wanted to bring music and sound into the area and the school had a preference for steel equipment, rather than timber. HAGS provided the UniPlay Lumba, in grey and red and with yellow panels, brightening up the playground, but in keeping with the school colours. The UniPlay Lumba offers a multitude of options including climbing, crawling and traversing increasing in difficulty, to challenge a range of ages. A variety of musical instruments have been installed in a circle around the outside of the multiplay unit, to meet the children’s needs for mixing sound and physical play together. The area is completed with a cost effective and natural rubber mulch safety surface.
Mr Johnston is delighted with the result and told us “The Lumba is used every day. The children value their time there using all aspects, and I just love to see them enjoying it!”

Sports and Play A Winning Combination
The Winns Primary School, Walthamstow The main objective was to create an active play and social space for the Key Stage 1 and 2 children which the school would be able to use all year round. The design included three vibrant zoned areas. To soften the outdoor space, it was also completed with artificial grass to make it more inviting to the children.

While the second Multi-Sport court is designed to cater for more active pupils, equipped with recessed football goals and practice hoops and finished with football markings.

Sports Competetitive Spaces
Bellshill Academy, North Lanarkshire Council North Lanarkshire Council have worked with HAGS on several large projects in recent years and this was the largest development of its type that North Lanarkshire had carried out. The eye-catching Multi-Use Games Area maximised the use of the space available. The scheme featured an anti-slip polymeric surface to create a multi-purpose zone which offers a range of different sports activities. The design encompasses three sports Arenas all with different line-markings, an outdoor fitness area and a warm-up warm-down zone. This is surrounded by a 400m running track and a 65m sprint track.
Deputy Head at Bellshill Academy, John McGuire, said “The new MUGA facility has had a hugely positive impact at our school. It has brought a new dimension to PE lessons. The pupils love using the facility and it has been a boon for after school clubs as well as encouraging pupils to be active at interval and lunchtime.�

All Weather Sports Never Mind the Weather
Cippenham Primary School, Slough The pupils of Cippenham Primary School were delighted with their new, unique under-cover Multi-Use Games Area. The school has c800 pupils and although they have a lot of outdoor space, they did not have a dedicated sports area or anywhere where outdoor learning could take place under cover. School budgets would not allow a new sports hall to be built so our covered MUGA was the perfect solution! The 40m x 18m Arena Duo was constructed together with an eye-catching shade canopy held up by a steel structure. Across the centre of the MUGA is a net divider that can be used to segregate groups of children enabling different activities to take place at the same time.
Ruth Mainwaring, Premises Manager, was so full of enthusiasm and told us “I will never forget on the opening day when the children were first allowed on the arena, one little boy running from end to end and back again, exclaiming in joy!�

Inclusive Learning Feeling Equally Valued
Lindon Bennett School, Hanworth The school requested two areas that offered different activities which were inclusive yet challenging enough to excite and occupy the children. At Lindon Bennett School, they have children with different types of disabilities and as such it was extremely important that the new play areas were inclusive, wheelchair friendly and that the playgrounds offered suitable levels of challenge to meet the requirements of all abilities. Area 1 included a bespoke steel UniPlay unit equipped with an inclusive wheelchair ramp and tailor-made features. In Area 2 we placed an inclusive Spinmee roundabout which is accessible to those with mobility impairments as well as wheelchair users. Its rotating base is flush with the surrounding safety surface, allowing easy transition between the surfaces.
Mark Hutton, Schools Business Manager told us that there is now “something for everybody”. He said that the play areas meets the children’s needs and have helped to bring the children closer together. The kids absolutely love playing in their new playgrounds!

Margaret Wix Primary School The School made contact with HAGS following a recommendation from another school in Hertfordshire with a view to upgrading their EYFS play space. The primary area for concern was the active play area to the front of the reception playground which had a climbing frame that was outdated. The new proposal for the Reception playground included removing and disposing the existing climbing frame and installing a UniMini Imse unit with it’s many exciting activities and also topping up the existing bark surfacing.

The Mall School The Mall School in Twickenham gained a bespoke UniPlay unit, after the school identified the need for a new climbing structure. Their previous one was deemed not fit for purpose after years of constant use. The UniPlay design offered various challenges for the variety of ages, and would allow the children to use the equipment simultaneously. After considering the needs of the school, and what pupils would need to excite and entertain them, a natural looking bespoke timber structure was designed. Pupils at the Mall School are now thrilled with their new equipment, as they have got their playground back, and now have an area to explore, play and socialise together.

Maes Yr Haul Primary School Maes Yr Haul Primary School, located in the Bridgend area installed a NRG trail providing pupils with a range of stimulating play opportunities. The school’s main objective was to create a low maintenance area for the older pupils which would last the next twenty to thirty years. HAGS designers created a bespoke configuration with items from our impressive NRG range. Its distinctive steel curved arches distinguish it as an excellent play area centrepiece. Susan Powell, School Administration Manager, tells us “The playground has really engaged the older pupils, the children absolutely love it!” Susan adds “The playground is very busy, we have even had to allocate time slots to each year group.”

Nature Play The Nature Play range is composed of trim trail units inspired by nature that can be combined in multiple ways to create bespoke play. With their organic shapes and earthy hues, the designs are a low visual impact option and will complement nicely a green space. The Nature Play system offers non-prescriptive activity options which encourage children to challenge themselves and use their imagination. Running between obstacles also boosts their fitness levels. The whole range is made from Robinia wood, known for its durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions, decay and vandalism. Its very dense composition makes it ideal for outdoor equipment.

Rowanfield Infant School The adventure zone at Rowanfield Infant School includes a number of role play options creating a great outdoor environment for learning. Aspiring performers can address an audience comfortably from the storytelling area or pupils can try out their acting skills on the impressive stage. Their fun zone with its four sensory play options includes sand and water play, while the bright wetpour zone incorporates the school’s four house colours. The wooden slat screens used in the Stella model are made of pine and treated with tar black linseed oil and top coat. The Capella model screens are hot-dip galvanised square pipe and the Nova has expanded metal screens. In addition to these options, the metal can be painted in any RAL or NCS colours (at additional cost). The slats can also be lacquered or linseed oiled with other colour pigments, such as silver grey or bark brown. Roofs can be coated with plant sedum as an additional option. The flexible modular system enables an infinite number of possible combinations and number of bicycle stands.

Tynewydd Primary School HAGS installed a bespoke Multi-Use Games Area for Tynewydd Primary School, located in Newbridge, Wales. They wanted to increase physical activity in their school. The Head Teacher requested a fully-enclosed court which would fit into the corner of the school playground. The design also had to consider local residents as the school playground is situated close to local houses. HAGS adapted the design to incorporate the back wall of the school yard as one of the boundary walls and flat goals to allow the school to optimize its outdoor space.
