don’t like sitting still. Most weekends you’ll find me on a hike, paddling a kayak or taking a road trip. I’m a big fan of creative gifts that honor my love of travel and nature. NEARBY is great because it offers so many products and experiences that fit my lifestyle, without taking up too much of my adventure time! A new bike and a white water rafting trip are in my future. I’m lucky
to be able enjoy the world around me and I want others to have the opportunity to do the same. That’s why I support environmental groups through my NEARBY wishlist. The best thing about NEARBY? My friends and family love me for using it! They appreciate the convenience of shopping online, and get the satisfaction of buying the perfect gift every time.

hen Deb Thompson was a young girl, she remembers walking into a shop so beautiful it stopped her in her tracks. It was then she knew that someday, somehow, she’d have a shop of her own that inspired the same type of awe in others. She took that leap and became a business owner in 2000, “after deciding that life was too short not to follow this dream,” Thompson said. And that’s how Nahcotta, named for a small coastal town in Washington, was born. A hip, eclectic art and retail gallery in the heart of historic downtown Portsmouth, the shop is warm, inviting and as much a reflection of Thomson’s personality as the products she’s passionate about offering.
Each month, Nachotta’s gallery space rotates exhibitions that showcase regional artists, as well as work from across the U.S. Since 2007, the gallery has also hosted its popular “Enormous Tiny Art Show,” which regularly exhibits hundreds of drawings, mixed media paintings, sculptures, and embroidered work, among other pieces, from dozens of artists. Nahcotta’s offerings aren’t limited to art: It also carries tasteful home decor, including furniture, jewelry, kitchenware, children’s items, and other unexpected gifts that can be found on NEARBY. MUD, a company based in Australia, is one of Thompson’s favorite lines. “We are thrilled to offer it on NEARBY,” says Deb. “They make everything out of the highest-

quality porcelain, and the bowls and plates are gorgeous and practical - a rare combination.” MUD items appear delicate, but they are all microwave-, dishwasher- and oven-safe. And they come in a wide selection of beautiful colors.
She’d always felt an affinity for Portsmouth, and it embodied exactly what she was looking for: “beautiful landscape, vibrant downtown, and wonderful culture,” she said. “I still absolutely love it here.” We’re guessing the feeling is mutual.
Deb chose Portsmouth as her base while living in Boston and craving a change of scene.

y biggest complaint about not living in N.H. anymore? You can’t find maple syrup anywhere! And by that I mean the good stuff, not that watered-down baloney that tries passing as the real thing. There is a lot I miss about my home state, actually: the lakes, mountains, the people…. NEARBY alleviates my homesick-
ness because I can get NH products delivered to my home, like pieces from my favorite artist, Boyan Pottery; jewelry from the Dedication Company; and a painting from McGowan Fine Art. Melissa Anne Miller captures NH’s beauty perfectly.” But let’s not forget the most important thing: maple syrup.

THE CRUST AND CRUMB
I
t started with a call to action in a Kickstarter campaign: “The Crust and Crumb Baking Company is moving to downtown. We need your help in opening a wicked cool neighborhood shop.” The Crust and Crumb owner Alison Ladman previously sold her goods wholesale and at farmers’ markets around New Hampshire with a grander vision to expand her commercial kitchen operation to the bricks and mortar of Main Street. “Really (the Kickstarter campaign) is a great way to get the community excited about it,” Ladman told the Concord Monitor newspaper in 2012. “They get to participate in the growth of the business, and they get a really cool reward.” Ladman’s fundraising efforts paid off and for their contributions, the Kick-
starter backers were rewarded with treats like chocolate truffle cakes, gooey cookies and decadent breakfast pastries. And Concord residents got something even more lasting: a great downtown bakery to call their own. Today visitors flock to her shop to buy artisan breads, pastries (including what locals dub “the best scones anywhere”), coffee cakes, sticky buns, cookies and bars, pies, layered cakes and tortes, tarts, quiches, and other savory items. Ladman got creative and decided to offer a ”communitysupported bread” subscription that allows patrons to pick up a couple of loaves a week. Sample breads include Canterbury sourdough, roasted potato bread, herbed ciabatta, tomato-olive, honey-oat, basil-pesto, and our personal favorite, Ladman’s signature buttermilk bread.
Bread subscriptions highlight the offbeat variety of goods that NEARBY offers. Bread may not be anything you imagined putting on your wedding registry or asked for on a holiday wishlist, but serious loaf-lovers are bound to appreciate such a unique, unexpected and tasty item.
Having a NEARBY storefront allows Ladman to reach people from near and far.  Her participation in the gift registry market is great for the current Crust and Crumb fan—and awaits discovery by the next lucky couple, birthday boy or wishlist-maker.
