Hello
I’m Haiku
Haiku Van Keuk E haiku.vankeuk@gmail.com
Philosophy THE BAREFOOT DESIGNER To begin at the beginning. Why study landscape architecture? I have a strong connection to the natural world, growing up in a simple home in the Australian rainforest. Seasonal change was exciting. In summer I swam in the creek and rode the rapids, climbed trees and built rock cubbies. In winter crunchy frosts covered the ground at dawn and every evening we would make a fire. Birdsong began every day and the vegetable patch measured the months. Until I moved to the city I took for granted my awareness of cycles and the shifting pattern of life. This upbringing plays a fundamental role in my perception, appreciation and design of landscape. I respect natural processes. I find comfort in places that are not sterile and joy in interacting with the external world, both in Australian and in places experienced through travel in India, Southeast Asia and Europe.
NOW I believe landscapes, as we experience them, are a single moment in a continuous story. They are dynamic, shifting and adapting with time, seasons and processes. Landscape architecture must respect varying contexts. It is about initiating designs that can grow with and be adapted by the inhabitants of a space.
It is both what is built and what is deliberately left untouched. The level of complexity in this relationship is often overridden by extravagant design. I believe design needs to be a simple platform for humans to engage with and respect what the landscape itself has to offer.
IN TIME The present world is in a fragile state of rapid change focused on strength, power and control. Politics and economics affect how we can use land, but resource scarcities and our conscience will also change how landscape propositions are manifested. How will the world be in 5, 10, 20 years and how will this play out in landscape architecture? I want to explore how landscape architecture can respond to uncertainty, pass beyond present boundaries and find new ways of connecting people and their place.

Fort Lytton is a remnant landscape from the second world war. ‘Void’ is a concept that delicately reveals this historical site through a series of carefully considered internal and external interventions . The design utilises the tide of adjacent Brisbane river as well as light and shadow to take visitors on a site specific journey.

Tipping point is a project that responded to the 2011 floods in Brisbane, Australia. This resilient strategy celebrates and embraces the dynamic nature of a fluid terrain. The design is such that it can absorb disturbances, change and self-organise as a mechanism to cope with flooding. The concept breaks the physical boundary between river and land, where king tides and storm surges inundate parts of the site to remind us that we inhabit a changing landscape.
