THE IMPACT OF YOUR GIVING

KAYLA SALMONS Kayla Salmons is currently studying at Haileybury City and commenced her Year 12 studies in 2020. Kayla is the beneficiary of the Robin Fildes Scholarship. Kayla hopes to commence a course in psychology upon completion of her VCE.

Kayla would not have been able to attend Haileybury had it not been for the generosity of Old Haileyburian and former OHA Medal winner, Rob Fildes (OH ’58). Rob is Chairman of the Fildes Group of companies, a business specialising in labels, packaging, printing, consumables and software support programs to Australian pharmacies, hospitals, commercial kitchens and retail packaging.

Rob also had a very successful sporting career playing Centre Half Back for Collingwood from 1961–63 and ranked No. 1 in Australia and No. 14 in the world in Decathlon in 1971, earning him the accolade of ‘best all-round athlete in the country’. He was also President of Athletics Australia. 12 Annual Report on Giving

Rob outlines that “for my scholarship, I was looking for an outstanding student with all-round abilities including academic, social and sporting. Because of my sporting background I was hoping Haileybury could find an outstanding young boy or girl with potential to excel in sport but also with a strong character, self-discipline and work ethic”.

Kayla is an outstanding basketballer who has competed for Victoria at numerous National championships. She also plays for the Altona Gators in the Under 18 Women’s Victorian Championships as well as being a star performer for Haileybury in the APS/AGSV competition where they aim to go back to back after triumphing in 2019.

Kayla is excelling at Haileybury and thriving on the incredible opportunities that have been presented to her.

“My teachers and classmates have been welcoming and helpful through this transition making it easy for me to settle in and do well with my studies. My time at Haileybury has given me the confidence to realise that I can achieve anything that I put my mind to.”

RYAN ZHANG Ryan Zhang commenced at Haileybury City in Year 7, 2019. Ryan was the beneficiary of the Gary Bailey Memorial Scholarship donated via a bequest in memory of Gary, who sadly passed away in his 20s. Gary’s father, Arthur, wished for the scholarship recipient to be a positive contributor in the community in which he/she lived.

Ryan certainly fulfils this and is enjoying being part of the City Singers, Chamber Strings and Jazz Band as well as competing for Haileybury in inter-school swimming and cross country. Ryan is also heavily involved in the Drama program and performed in the musical, Mary Poppins. He was honoured to take up the part of Mr Banks.

He has made such an impression in his first year at Haileybury that he was chosen as Boys Middle School Captain for 2020. Dominic Linossier, Senior Deputy Head of Campus at City, reports that Ryan’s presence “is a positive one among not only his cohort, but also the broader Boys Middle School community.”

“2019 has been an amazing year for me and one that I will never forget. Meeting new amazing people who would later become close friends of mine, meeting marvellous new teachers and getting involved in many extracurricular school activities. I want to thank you and the Bailey family for allowing me to come to this fantastic school.”

For many alumni and friends of Haileybury, a charitable bequest is the easiest way to make a gift to the School. By means of your will or other estate plan, a bequest may be made to Haileybury in general – or may be applied to a purpose of your choosing, such as a scholarship, or building works at a specific campus of which you are, or may have been, affiliated.
