Radial Application

A multitude of individual identical elements making up a singular body in a seamless way.

Transitional Geometry

Web is a product of simple rules within a geometric frame that creates a complex and elegant unified object in the form of a potential installation. The idea is to combine an array of individual parts to create a seamless form. Density and scale varies based on the specific application and materiality: foam, three-dimensional plastic printing, rockite, concrete, metal-work, or digital. Installation

Tile

The first rule consists of setting up a primitive geometric shape that could easily be repeated and to act as the base guide parameter: a pentagon. Second, a curvilinear line is created wrapping two of the five sides of the shape; followed by a third that is flipped to the outer direction.

Specifying a corner condition is crucial to the scheme. Hence, the line is mirrored across - creating the first tile. The edge of the tile is arrayed on a rotation of seventy-two degrees to match the pentagon guide. Once the initial set is complete, another set of line-work is placed at its end. This process is replicated numerous times. Three-dimensional

However, the resulting pattern is not the desired product. Therefore, the original tile is given thickness, as well as move movement in the third dimension (up and down), in the same fashion as how the ‘S’ curve is made; introducing a new layer of density to the overall framework. Discoveries

The rustling expanded pattern is quite extraordinary. As the pattern extends, new patterns emerge - resulting in infinite possibilities. Pockets of patterns are created mostly of radial arrangements. Visually, there are two constants:

(1) every detail is mirrored along the five datum lines of the edges of the pentagonal guide;

(2) the center point distinctively stands out, juxtaposed to its context. As well as resembling more of a rectalinear characteristics resembling the pentagon.

Another quite unique feature is a star based shape appearing on the outer shell of the center - where the pattern is initially created.

Foam

Location: Tulane University

Foam cut is roughly twenty-four inches by 72”. Goal has been to create a more smoother finish (like bottom part of the foam), but the piece was left as is (top part of the foam). The vision for this type of application is to be a vertical architectural feature.

10 Identical Strips per Face

For this particular study, only ten identical strips have been used per a single face; making a total of one-hundred and ten strips.

Aim is to transform the tiling study into a large-scale stand-alone object. This allows Web to become a space to be occupied by people, rather than be a form within another space. The pentagon shape has been crucial in the development of the Plane variant of Web. It is key to maintain as much of the rules as possible. Thus a polyhedron with twelve identical sides, made up of pentagons: Dodecahedron, is created to act as the base framework. A new rule is to create datum points, to which strands can start and end - which allows for repetition to occur. The actual tiling is reconfigured, so it does not intersect into another copy of itself.

Bottom face of the polyhedron is omitted, due to the ground acting as the horizontal base.

For this smaller scale (mock-up) variant, only half of the amount of strips are used: five. The rest of the rules remain intact. However, a more of tangible approach is taken to ensure the successful constructibility. These include the introduction of end-to-end joint and base joint connectors; an exterior frame to hold the free-floating object in tension by wire - connection points are incorporated into the joint connectors; and a flat base that has voids for the object to snap into.

A further physical variant consists of compression pressure points within the object itself. Thus, replacing the exterior tension frame.
