Master´s Final Project Tutor: Iñaki Begiristain Doc Architect On the oldest pier of the port of Motrico is the Old Fishermen’s Guild. After the damage caused by a fire, it is decided to maintain the original masonry walls and fit between them a new metal piece that replaces the old wooden structure. A light zinc cover encompasses and covers the composition of elements.

The piece contains two uses divided by two different ways of climbing. Through a staircase you can access the part of the brotherhood and exhibition halls. On the other hand, a ramp parallel to the length of the pier lifts pedestrians to a viewpoint that gives access to the restaurant.

Las Brisas del Río Chillón is one of the many human settlement communities on the outskirts of Lima. These areas of extreme poverty are the most affected by natural disasters and the last ones to which aid arrives. In the summer of 2017 I traveled to Peru to know this reality and collaborate with the NGO Techo. After weeks of collaborating in emergency home construction and doing field work in parallel, I decided to develop my Final Degree Project around these areas affected by natural disasters and seek both urban and construction solutions.

t ‘ i k a y A construction system is proposed using bamboo rods, material that abounds in this area of Peru. In addition to the speed of construction and its completely sustainable process, it has great seismic resistance. The enclosures in turn are made of bamboo or derivatives, playing with the design of the frames and the gaps.

Thanks to the multiple possibilities of combinations that the construction system gives, all kinds of spaces are created depending on the enclosures and the treatment of public and private space. In this way the needs of the community are covered by creating spaces for sports, dining rooms, kitchens, study classrooms, warehouses, maternity centers or latrines and personal grooming areas.

During the participatory process developed with the Las Brisas del RĂo ChillĂłn community, several conclusions are reached. Among them it is decided to develop a first constructive project for the community, and it is proposed to expand the area of the communal premises. It is one of the first steps to be taken so that the community resurfaces from the ashes after the natural disaster suffered since the feeling of community is very strong and they deal with all problems collectively. That is why we choose to give them a new covered space with larger dimensions in which they seek to meet and live celebrations.

Suchitoto, an important city in El Salvador, will be the location of this project. It proposes a School of Professional Formation in the “penitentiary” center of the city, with the aim of restoring native customs and original farming systems based on the primary sector. In this way, the younger generation will realize its origins and the main intention will be to stimulate the economy of the country at the first level of the sector by igniting this love for native customs. Therefore, the bet of the project will be to strengthen the tradition by educating young people. UJTI means route in the native Nahua language. The project scheme is based on the structure of a route that leads from the city to the countryside. A “gate” is proposed in the urban area, a “bridge” that leads from the city to the countryside. One who crosses that door begins the journey towards nature.

The road takes various forms as it passes through the spaces. The main thread of the project is water. Through a channel that goes up and down depending on the area through which it passes, water is taken from the city to the areas of crops in the form of irrigation. In this way, water, in addition to having its principal function of hydration, also takes on a certain poetic meaning as an element of union

vacio encerrado LOGROÑO 2018 https://concentrico.es/vacio-encerrado/ Pavilion for International Architecture and Design Festival in Logroño The venue is located in the medieval town of Logroño, capital of La Rioja and also the capital of wine. Like in any medieval town, the contrast between the full and the empty, between the mass and the gap, that is, between the private space made up of buildings, and the public space that corresponds to the narrow streets, can be read. In order to blur that limit, a joint space is created embracing both spaces. Through the given material, the pavement, the color and the shape, we want to represent the culture of the place, of the wine, always leaving the spectator a freedom of interpretation. These interpretations can be remembered in some way inside a barrel, with wooden planks impregnated with wine, or even the land of the vineyards. Although the object seems closed, it includes certain openings that offer interaction to the viewer, creating visuals that pass through that object. In addition to the narrow openings, the change of pavement creates some uncertainty in the viewer, who doubts whether he can enter or not, creating a prohibited space, or not.

AT SAN SEBASTIAN 2017 Installation for the Mugak Architecture Biennale Co-authors: Xabier Sarasola, Elda Rodriguez, Adrián López, Henar Merino, Izaskun Soto, Iñigo Basterretxea, Leyre Torrecilla, Beatriz Estefanía, Joel Seoane AT Arises from an interpretation of the different essential limits: the physical, the natural, the temporal, the emotional and the knowledge limit; appropriate to the intervention space. Through a simple material such as the rope, five patterns are generated that formally respond to these five concepts. The visitor will be able to perceive the different accessible corners generated with this rope structure in a constant set of full and empty spaces. AT gets its name from appreciations in two languages: Euskera (at, synonymous from outside) and English (at, preposition linked to location, both in space and time) that refer to the materialization of the mentioned limits at the place and time of the intervention.

BOTXO BITXI urban device BILBAO 2018 Ideas competition for Open House Bilbao Honorable mention As if it were a precious stone, Botxo Bitxi collects an asymmetric space fruit of the emptiness that arises between the tangled weft of wood. The object opens inviting visitors to circulate through it and enjoy its presence while they inform themselves about the OPEN HOUSE festival. Closed, it becomes a sculptural object that represents the festival while creating some uncertainty and curiosity to discover what happens inside.

conscious architecture exhibition SAN SEBASTIAN 2018 Architecture Without Borders Euskadi Second Mugak Architecture Biennial Architects Without Borders Euskadi presents the exhibition Conscious Architecture to show the trajectory of Architects Without Borders through a few projects carried out in different countries through transversal approaches. The exhibition consists of four modules divided into themes, such as; transversal approaches, housing, health and education. The projects are counted through a band that runs through the four modules built with PVC pipes. The composition evokes us to the idea of the house and the shelter.

The backbone idea is to play with the idea of pasacalle, we may also say “promenade architecturale”, which is the very inner bedrock of the project. The LandshuterHochzeit, the pageant and colourful procession of Landshut, the “walk along the street” is the suggestion of the project, and as said, we try to translate this idea into the many alongside walks the building comprehends and contains, inside and outside. The Building is constructed over a portico related with the street. This portico, a covered street, gathers many paths and itineraries; from the old city, from the river, from the south or from the garden and parking lots. Also the audience arrived by bus or dropped by car at the entrance are users of this portico. This portico is a sort of filter which directs all the walking visitors to the lower entrance and then, to the main stairs and to the street/hall; for those arrived from far as those from near.

HELSINKI national museum HELSINKI 2019 Colaboration with: Viar Estudio Arquitectura Scheck Architects The proposal for the expansion of the National Museum stems from the idea of digging to create the least possible impact on the outside of it, in its huge garden. The objective is to highlight the idea of entering the rock. That is why a first trench is proposed, a long ditch, which is the main outdoor space of the exhibition, as well as open auditoriums, as the first approach to the museum. It is planned that this “trench / street” be a place to meet, exhibit works of art, spend time or just stay. Once in the first entrance hall, we will descend to the main exhibition hall following a guided “walk”. In the first entrance hall we will have a balcony where a look at the “narrow trench” can be taken, the second ditch and the backbone of the project. Later we will go down to the lobby and finally we will take the hanging staircase towards the excavated interior street, which is the “narrow trench”, the most incredible space of the museum and will be an inspiring space for many things; proportion (narrow / high), material (granite extracted from the site), the lighting system (a double-sided skylight facing east and west, filtered by a lattice system), the atmosphere and the perception of being under land.
