PERSONAL TRAINER NICK GETS THE BEST OUT OF HOPE ISLAND HOMEOWNERS

Personal trainer Nick Hammond is a welcome and familiar sight around Halcyon Waters and Vision by Halcyon in Hope Island.

Each week he trains homeowners in a number of classes including Stronger for Longer, Invigorate, Revive and Aquarobics. “I love being able to guide them and encourage them to get more active,” he said. “It’s great because moving the body makes you feel younger, helps with mental health and you get to socialise plus they are lots of fun.”

Nick said he gets a full history from each homeowner when they come to their first class to ensure safety. “I ask them if they are following any medical advice or if they have any injuries just so I am aware of what they can and can’t do,” he said. “They are very vocal and let me know how they’re feeling during every class.” He said one of the homeowners, named Catherine, hated going to the gym and preferred to spend her time in the pool. “One day it was too rainy to do aquarobics, so I convinced her to give a circuit class a try and now she’s hooked,” he said. Nick said Revive is a great class for homeowners who are new to exercising or haven’t done it for a number of years. “It’s a great class because it involves the use of a chair and incorporates similar movements to an aqua class,” he said. “It’s easy and gentle and you use your body weight to get a good workout.”

Nick’s top tips for staying fit and healthy this summer

Get up and move! Go for a walk everyday or if you’re less mobile, get into the water as it supports your weight. It’s all about balance. Indulge in the festive season but try and eat as healthy as possible the majority of the time. Enjoy a glass of festive cheer but stay hydrated. Have a glass of water between every alcoholic drink if you can. Don’t go on any fad diets when the new year rolls around. Try and have lean proteins, good carbs and natural sugars and fibre.
