The Wire - Fall 2013

Safety First Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter Have you tested yours lately? A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter or GFCI is a type of outlet that, when working properly, detects any imbalances in current and trips the outlet to protect users from electrical shock. They are often installed in areas that are likely to be in contact with water such as kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor locations. Test your GFCI outlets monthly to ensure they are operating properly.

HCH 2013.09

Time is running out:

1. Push the black TEST button. 2. You should hear a click and the red RESET button should pop out. Anything plugged into the outlet should not be able to operate at this point. 3. If power stays on after you have pushed the TEST button, your GFCI is defective. 4. Push the red RESET button to return power to the outlet. If you do not have a GFCI in your bathroom and kitchen (located within 1 meter from a sink or shower/bathtub), or if they are defective – hire a licensed electrical contractor to install and repair them to meet the Electrical Safety Code.
