In 2012, nuclear output showed a modest increase to 85.6 TWh, up from 85.3 TWh the year before, representing 56.4 per cent of total generation. Contributions from renewable resources continued to grow. Wind production increased from 3.9 TWh to 4.6 TWh. On a percentage basis, it represented 3.0 per cent of total output - up from 2.6 per cent in 2011 - and exceeded the output of Ontario’s coal plants. Output from hydroelectric and natural gas facilities was essentially unchanged from 2011, coming in at 33.8 TWh and 22.2 TWh respectively. Ontario’s coalfired units remained at less than three per cent of production. Total annual electricity consumption stayed virtually flat at 141.3 TWh. Factors constraining growth include the current economic conditions, the growth in embedded generation capacity (which reduces demand for electricity from the bulk power system) and ongoing conservation and demand management initiatives.

Electricity Rates effective May 1, 2013 HCH 2013.03

Local electricity delivery charges are changing The Ontario Energy Board has approved a decrease in delivery charges effective May 1, 2013. For a residential household using an average of 800 kWh per month, there is a decrease in delivery charges of 0.2% or $0.11. The monthly bill for a General Service < 50kW customer consuming 2000 kWh per month will decrease by 1.0% or $0.95. The delivery portion includes the recovery of costs to build and maintain the distribution system as well as pass through costs for the transmission of electricity.

Haldimand County Hydro’s distribution rates, the portion of the electricity bill that is related to Haldimand County Hydro’s operations, represents only 28.1% of the total electricity charges found on the bill, and now includes a $0.79 monthly pass through charge paid directly to the IESO for costs associated with managing and maintaining the Smart Meter infrastructure. The chart below shows the percentage breakdown of the related electricity charges for a residential customer using 800 kWh a month and billed on Time-of-Use rates.

Haldimand County Hydro implemented Time-of-Use rates in September 2011 for residential and general service customers who use less than 50 kW per month. Charges are calculated based on the time of day that the electricity is used. Please refer to the chart below as a guideline in shifting your usage to the most economical time period in order to reduce the amount you are charged for electricity.

Shift from on-peak to off-peak periods when possible to help manage electricity costs, reduce strain on the electricity system, and help the environment.
