HOLIDAY & LEISURE
Try Something NEW while on
Holiday in Britain Why not try a break with a difference, and learn while on holiday in Britain? From circus skills to chocolate making, Latin American dancing to zookeeper, you can turn your hand to something extraordinary!
Master bread-baking or chocolate-making, four-course lavish meals or one-pot wonders at the cookery courses run by Betty’s famous Yorkshire tea rooms in the north of England. Courses such as Baking with Chocolate, Effortless Entertaining, or the Chocolate Box – where you can learn the delicate art of hand tempering, creating indulgent fillings, hand dipping and different finishes.
Add an extra dimension to your holiday by exploring a rich variety of learning experiences. Whether you’re athletic or cerebral, adventurous or creative, there’s ample opportunity to embrace something new or deepen existing knowledge, all with a unique British twist.
Food and Drink Performing Arts
While wine and cheese are often happy culinary partners, the School of Artisan Food in Nottinghamshire has launched a course on the more unusual collaboration of beer and cheese. Participants learn about British artisan cheeses paired with traditional ales from the Welbeck Abbey Brewery. And if you feel like working up your appetite first, the cooking school is situated in the heart of Sherwood Forest, famed for its association with Robin Hood and a great place to explore nature walks.
Thrill-seekers may be interested in turning their hand to studying circus skills. Bristol is home to Circomedia, where you can learn to juggle, walk the tight-wire or fly through the air on a trapeze. The school is just a leap away from some of the city’s main attractions too, including the world-famous, iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and SS Great Britain, which he also designed. London’s Circus Space is another good choice for those wanting to try something different; the school runs Experience Days that will unlock your inner trapeze-artist.

Known for its green and pleasant land, rugged landscapes and beautiful parks, Britain is the perfect place to discover more about gardening. Situated in the south-west county of Cornwall – a haven of spectacular beaches, diminutive villages, dramatic coastlines and mouthwatering cream teas – is the Eden Project. This unique attraction contains the world’s largest greenhouse and its horticulturalists and scientists offer half-day or full-day courses teaching a wide variety of horticultural topics from garden sculpture, foraging and beekeeping to hands-on practical experience. Animal lovers, meanwhile, can experience the ins and outs of zookeeping for the day at one of Britain’s excellent zoos. Edinburgh Zoo – home to two giant pandas, the first to live in Britain for 20 years – offers the chance to help with daily animal feeds and watch animal training. Experience life on a working farm, with a luxury stay at Wheatacre Hall Barns – situated on the Burroughs family farm on the NorfolkSuffolk border. See where your daily pint comes from – with milking demonstrations upon request, and younger visitors will love finding out about all the farm’s new arrivals, with a close and personal view of the farm animals.
Take to the Sky Enjoy a magnificent birdseye view of Britain by taking to the skies to learn how to fly a gyrocopter. Similar to a helicopter but selfpropelling, they have dual controls so you can either take control of the gyrocopter yourself or enjoy the view while your instructor flies. Roger Savage Gyroplanes, based near the Cumbrian town of Penrith in the Lake District takes students up over the magnificent Lakes for an unforgettable experience.
Brought your dancing shoes? Whether its ballroom or Latin American, jazz to Bollywood, the world-famous Pineapple Dance Studios (www.pineapple.uk.com) in London offers a class to meet every taste and, as all of the classes are open, you can just drop in and take a class, whatever your experience.

At One With Nature by Catherine Mack Travel writer specialising in responsible travel. Co-editor www.greentraveller.co.uk
Scholars and bards have praised Britain’s green qualities for hundreds of years, one of the most famous being William Blake’s description of England as a “Green and pleasant land”. Now, in the 21st century, green signifies so much more, especially in tourism, with visitors looking for a greener, fairer and more sustainable land. Britain is proudly rolling out its green carpet, where visitors can choose from an eclectic range of green accommodation, use low carbon-travel and tap in to local produce and culture. One of Britain’s earliest green movements was established in 1951 with the designation of its first National Park, The Peak District. There are now fifteen National Parks throughout Britain, aimed at protecting its precious natural heritage. Not just in these precious protected areas, but all around Britain there are many impressive green places to stay, where you will get all the information you need to take part in green activities, buy local produce, and avail of local transport. Being green doesn’t mean just having a solar panel or doing a bit of recycling anymore; these are places which really incorporate all aspects of sustainability into their business practices, and are keen to share their passions for a greener future with visitors. There are various ways of finding green places to stay such as the Green Tourism Business Scheme, which certifies businesses with a bronze, silver or gold rating depending on how many green initiatives they have in place. You may also like to check out leading green websites such as www.greentraveller.co.uk and www.responsibletravel.com. In Britain, however, you don’t have to jump in at the deep end to be green. Just travel slowly by train, let a canoe take the strain, a fire heat your shower or spot a rare flower, and the landscape which inspired writers for centuries will be around for all to enjoy for generations to come. Travelling with your Little Ones Spring is in the air and your thought have probably turned to getting out and about with the family to make the most of the longer, warmer days. All families are different, but when it comes down to it there are some basic requirements for a good family trip.
The pleasure is in the detail
agreement about the way you'll split the bills and arrange how to share day-to-day responsibilities.
Keeping Everyone Safe More than 900 million international journeys are undertaken every year. Global travel on this scale exposes many people to a range of health risks. Many of these risks can be minimised by precautions taken before, during and after travel. For information on health risks for travellers visit www.who.int/ith/en/.
If this is your first trip with your children, plan for a slower pace than you might usually attempt. Be realistic about what you can cover with little ones in tow and if you are travelling with a small child, a pram or buggy can be useful even if your child is walking. It will serve as a place for them to rest when covering a lot of ground or a makeshift bed when they are worn out.
Always use a car seat when travelling by car regardless of the regulations in your destination. A universal model is a good idea if you are using a variety of vehicles or hiring a car. For general guidelines and information about fitting child's car and booster seats, go to www.childcarseats.org.uk.
If you are travelling with another family, discuss what each person wants to do before you go and dedicate childcare responsibilities during travel.
Look into supervised childcare, such as kids' clubs before you go. Find out what activities the children will be involved in, how many children are cared for and whether the children are grouped by age. Be prepared to check it out yourself when you arrive and make sure that all the necessary paperwork including CRB checks are in place. If anything seems amiss, be prepared to cancel your plans and start looking for alternatives.
Establish how much time you would like to spend together and come to an

Sun Safety Enjoy the sun safely. Whether you're at home or abroad, use shade, clothing and at least SPF15 sunscreen to protect yourself. Young skin is delicate and very easily damaged by the sun. All children, no matter whether they tan easily or not, should be protected from the sun.

Children with fair or red hair, pale eyes or freckles are at most risk. Keep babies under six months out of direct sunlight, especially around midday. Tips for protecting children in the sun: l Set good habits for the future – teaching children safe sun habits while they are young sets a good pattern for later life. l Remember you can burn in the UK – the Great British sun is quite capable of burning your child! Take extra care at home as well as abroad. l Use shade – Keep babies in complete shade: under trees, umbrellas, canopies or indoors and use prams and buggies shades. l Cover them up – When outdoors, protect a baby’s skin with loose-fitting clothes, and a wide-brimmed hat that shades their face, neck and ears. l Wear sunglasses – Buy good quality, wraparound sunglasses for children, as soon as they can wear them. Sunglasses don't have to be expensive brands. l Find hats they like – Encourage children to wear hats with brims, especially if they are not wearing sunglasses. The wider the brim, the more skin will be shaded from the sun. l Use sunscreen wisely – Use at least a factor 15 sunscreen and choose a ‘broadspectrum’ brand that protects against UVA rays – the more stars the better. Apply to areas that cannot be protected by clothing, such as the face, ears, feet and backs of hands. Choose sunscreens that are formulated for children and babies' skin. These products are less likely to contain alcohol or fragrances that might irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions. l Apply sunscreen generously and regularly – Put some on before children go outdoors. Sunscreen can easily be washed, rubbed or sweated off – so reapply often throughout the day. For more information visit www.cancerresearchuk.org or www.sunsmart.org.uk

BeltUpp and Keep Little Ones Safe We are all, as parents, so concerned when our children are babies and young toddlers as to the fitting of their car seats and the security they are in. We then move them to the Group 2 seat with the impression that they will be as safe! When our children fall asleep in the Group 2 seat they can slump forward into a very dangerous position. The car seatbelt slowly releases as the child falls forward. The seatbelt should be holding both the child and seat in a tight upright position for it to be ‘classed’ as safe. The BeltUpp device has been designed to solve this problem.
BeltUpp is an additional belt that connects easily to the existing seat belt in two places, feeding through the spare eyelet in the seat and forming a ‘X’ pattern on the child’s chest. The belt is then adjusted easily so that it is a snug fit. BeltUpp will hold the child in a safe and upright position in the seat at all times.
BeltUpp has been fully tested to ECE 44-04 regulations and approved by the Fire Service. R.R.P £17.99 To find out more Telephone 01455 293047 or visit

Introducing the Holo® Invented by mother Emma Benson, Holo® has arrived in the world of pregnancy comfort. Originally the idea came to Emma just over 6 years ago, at 28 weeks pregnant, while on holiday in Spain.
Holo® is suitable at any stage of pregnancy from the moment it becomes impossible to lie on your tummy, right up until the birth.
“I was aware that lying on my back with my tummy in the sun was not advisable, as apparently an unborn baby doesn’t like the brightness in its eyes and will turn away in the womb. Lying on my front was just not an option unless I dug a big hole in the sand! It seemed obvious that all I needed was a lilo with a hole in it for my tummy to go in,” explained Emma. Emma got to work on the project and Holo® was created!
Not just for holidays, it’s ideal for pregnant or sensitive tummies to use on land or water, to lie on your front for relaxation, massage and sunbathing. Holo® is used by Physiotherapists and is proving to be popular with pregnancy yoga teachers too.
International interest is growing and is proving to be an instant hit with happy mums-to be worldwide.
The Holo® was good for getting back massages from my partner in the last few weeks. I have now passed it on to a pregnant friend who loves to sleep on her front and she is very grateful for it.

Thank you and hope all is well with you. Kirsty McCabe

SPLASH TIME FUN
The Benefits of Swimming An article by Happy Nappy inventor and designer, and founder of safety swimwear specialists, Splash About – Desri Goodwin about investing in a baby wetsuit. Don't feel that you have to stay in the pool for ages – getting your child used to it can be a gradual process. You can increase the time you spend in the water as they get older and more active, but for the first few times that you take them it's more about getting acclimatised to the water and the surroundings. You'll know yourself when your child has started to have enough.
If you watch children in a pool or swimming and playing in the sea they are likely to be smiling and laughing, jumping and moving around, having fun, exercising their muscles, lungs and heart – just generally splashing about in water. Apart from the obvious safety plus points, learning to swim has many benefits. It’s a fantastic, natural way for families to have fun and keep fit at the same time – and it makes for great bonding. A recent survey of parents revealed that mums and dads were more likely to feel an increased connection with their baby after they had been swimming with their children. Plus, fathers in particular felt more confident with their parenting skills after swimming with their baby.
promotes balance, strength and coordination, improves stamina, helps develop joint mobility and flexibility, and strengthens muscles. At the same time it emphasises overall fitness as nearly all muscles are used during a swimming session. In addition to teaching them a respect for water, it also enhances their self-esteem and can help to develop regular sleeping patterns. Research has also shown that babies and children who swim are likely to benefit from better social skills, are more independent, less timid and cope better with new situations and experiences throughout life. The key elements when teaching children to swim is to make it fun and make them feel confident and comfortable in the water. That’s why getting them started from an early age with baby swim classes is so important. The first year of a baby's life is crucial in terms of their physical development and gaining new experiences, so it's a perfect time to introduce them to swimming. Starting early also means they're less likely to develop a fear of water that can occur in older children.
It’s not just good for mums and dads though – nearly a quarter of parents found that their child seemed in a happier mood after they had been swimming The very nature of water massaging the body releasing endorphins that give a sense of wellbeing means there are definite psychological benefits. Swimming is particularly good for children because it helps build cardiovascular fitness,

There's no need to wait till your baby's been immunised, but new mums should allow at least six weeks after birth before going swimming. For young babies try and go to smaller pools, where the temperature is likely to be warmer. They often offer baby swim classes which will allow both of you to maximise the experience and you will be reassured that there is a swim specialist on hand. Remember that as your baby won't be moving about much they'll feel the cold quicker than you, so you may want to think
Taking your baby or toddler swimming for the first time can be a bit daunting; just the practicalities of getting you both changed can put a lot of people off. However, if you make it a part of your baby’s routine from an early age, it can become an activity that you both enjoy. If your child is going to swim classes whilst they are still in nappies or there is any possibility at all of them needing a nappy - you must use a swim nappy that limits leaks as much as possible. You should check that the swim school or pool ensures those in the pool with you use effective swim nappies too. Although pools are treated to deal with urine, poo in the pool is not only a health risk, but a costly accident as the entire pool has to be drained and cleaned. Above all make sure that you both have fun and that you enjoy the swimming experience together. Your children will learn to love being in the pool, making splashes and jumping about and they will become more independent and gain confidence the more often you go.

SPLASH TIME FUN
Strap on a Fin and Learn to Swim! We know how important learning to swim is for all family members. It’s a popular after school and recreational activity. SwimFin has been designed by a highly qualified UK swimming coach with over 30 yrs experience. It’s a vertical aid and suitable for children from 2 yrs+ of all abilities. SwimFin can be used on all 4 strokes and is the only aid to have been endorsed by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA). We’re very proud of that fact and are pleased to be partnered with leading organizations around the globe. So how will it help your child to swim? It works in harmony with the body because it’s worn on the back providing total freedom around the arms and legs allowing for a natural swimming position, with the fin working like a boat’s keel in the water. Kids love SwimFin because the shark element appeals as a fun piece of kit and encourages them into the water. It appeals to parents because it makes learning to swim more of a game than a chore. Tests have proved that it can reduce the process by up to a third less time. It’s also perfect for taking on holiday as the fin is highly visible in a busy pool or on the beach!

GIFT INSPIRATIONS
Thank You Dad! Fathers Day, the celebration of fatherhood and male parenting is a popular 20th century tradition practiced in a number of countries throughout the world today. It is said to have been the idea of Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to honour her father – American Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart. When Sonora was 16 years old her mother died while giving birth to her sixth child. As the eldest child, she was so moved by her father’s devotion and the enormity of hardships that were to be faced by him in raising the family, that she campaigned for the official recognition of Father's Day. As a result, Fathers Day was first celebrated on 19th June 1910, and by the time Sonora's father, died in 1919, Fathers Day was a popular occasion in US. Today, fifty-two of the world’s countries celebrate Fathers Day on the third Sunday of June. On Sunday 16th June 2013 you can say a big ‘Thank You’ to your Dad, with a wonderful gift from our Fathers Day Gift Guide, which is packed with quirky gadgets, tasty treats and traditional gift inspirations, that are sure to bring a smile to your dad’s face on his special day.

EDUCATION
What is Synthetic Phonics all about? Most schools in the UK teach children how to read and write using phonics (as recommended by the current government). Synthetic phonics refers to 'synthesising', or blending, the sounds to read words. Learning to read using phonics isn’t a new concept, but in the past, it has been used in combination with other methods, such as ‘look and say’ and predicting or guessing words based on pictures or context. In the English language, there are 44 sounds (phonemes) but only 26 letters. This means that some sounds will be made up by more than one letter such as the ‘oa’ in boat or ‘ck’ in duck. When children first learn to read, it is the sounds that are more important than the letter names. Different schools use different phonics programmes, but it is likely that your child will learn their letter sounds in small groups together and then work on blending them to make words. The first sound group is normally - ‘s, a, t, p, i, n’. Once children know these sounds, they will be encouraged to blend them together to make words, such as ‘s – i – t’. The most important thing to get right when helping your child learn letter sounds at home is to pronounce them correctly.
This might seem obvious – but your child should learn to say the sound at the beginning of ‘mat’ as ‘mm’ sound rather than ‘muh’. There are lots of websites to help with letter sound pronunciation, such as www.oxfordowl.co.uk – (follow the link for ‘expert help’.) The more you can do at home to help children recognise and say letter sounds, the better. The speedier children become at recognising letter sounds, the easier it becomes to blend them together and learn to read. Using sound (phoneme) flashcards can be a helpful way to introduce the sounds. These can bought or homemade. Play as many games as you can to reinforce the sounds such as: 1 Fishing for Sounds (Write the letter sounds onto small cardboard fish shapes. Put a paper clip onto each fish and tie a magnet onto some string to be a fishing rod to fish them out. When you catch a fish, you can keep it if you can say the sound / think of a word beginning / ending with that sound etc.) 2 Full Circle (Children start off with a simple word using their sound flashcards, e.g. ‘pin’, then take turns to change 1 letter at a time and see how many different words can be made until you get back to the original word. (i.e. pin – pit – pat – sat – sit – sin – pin.)
Article by Liz Walker Proprietor of Reading Chest
3 I Spy (Using flashcards – it’s an old favourite, but still works. Use the flashcards to help build the link between the letter and its associated sound.) 4 Magnetic Letters (Make the most of these on your fridge and around the house. These can be easily moved around to make different words – nonsense words as well as real.) 5 Shaving Foam! (Have fun practising writing letter sounds with your finger in shaving foam on your kitchen table. If you want to get really messy – add a little paint!) As soon as your child has learned the first few sounds, they can start to read. There are quite a few decodable reading schemes available, such as Phonics Bug, Floppy’s Phonics, Big Cat Phonics, Yellow Door Phonics, which are stocked by www.readingchest.co.uk. These books are written so that your child can sound out most of the words using their phonic knowledge. They might include a few ‘tricky’ words, such as ‘does’ where the letters don't represent their normal sounds, but these will be common ‘tricky’ words which will need to be learned by sight.

GREEN LIVING
Choose a Greener Future for Your Family There is no denying that having children is demanding on the environment. Children have many needs; food, clothes, nappies, nursery products, to name but a few and as any parent knows they outgrow many of these things in a very short time.
Real Nappies
Even with the demands that a family makes on our planet, being green doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are a few things that you can try – even if you only do a few of them it is a step in the right direction.
The Fairtrade system includes environmental standards as part of producer certification. The standard requires producers to work to protect the natural environment and make environmental protection a part of farm management.
Hang Dry Make the most of warm spring and summer days by giving your tumble drier a break. Get a clothesline or rack to dry your clothes by the air. Your wardrobe will maintain colour and fit, and you'll save money.
Plant a Tree It's good for the air, the land and help reduce the ‘urban heat island effect’ – where the manmade surfaces in urban centres absorb heat, becoming hotter than surrounding areas. On some days, central London can be up to 10°C hotter than its suburbs! Make it meaningful for the whole family and plant a tree every year for each member. The Woodland Trust offers expert, tailored support to help people and organisations plant new trees and woods, to find out how you can get involved visit www.woodlandtrust.org.uk
Did you know your baby could use up to 6000 disposable nappies by the time they are potty trained? Real nappies can save you money and even using them part time will help reduce the 8 million disposables sent to landfill every day in Britain. For information visit The Real Nappy Information Service www.goreal.org.uk.
Support Fairtrade
In addition, by purchasing Fairtrade products, shoppers in the UK are ensuring that producer organisations receive a Fairtrade premium for investment in economic, social and environmental products of their own choice. These premiums can enable farmers to implement a range of environmental protection programmes which will contribute to the range of solutions needed to address climate change and ultimately benefit all of us. For more information visit www.fairtrade.org.uk.
Choose Organic Organic is good for you and your planet, is kind to animals and wildlife, and allows us to make a big difference – simply through the way we shop. With all these benefits, it’s easy to see why organic delivers such good value for money. By choosing organic, local and seasonal we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint. The UK Government’s own advisors found that plant, insect and bird life is up to 50% greater on organic farms. Organic farming relies on wildlife to help control natural pests, so wide field edges are left uncultivated for bugs, birds and bees to flourish. To find out how to make the right organic choices visit www.soilassociation.org.

Recycling Recycling is an excellent way of saving energy and conserving the environment. Some Interesting Facts: n Up to 60% of the rubbish that ends up in the dustbin could be recycled. n The unreleased energy contained in the average dustbin each year could power a television for 5,000 hours. n The largest lake in the Britain could be filled with rubbish from the UK in 8 months. n On average, 16% of the money you spend on a product pays for the packaging, which ultimately ends up as rubbish. n As much as 50% of waste in the average dustbin could be composted. n Up to 80% of a vehicle can be recycled.
Give It Away Before you throw something away, think about if someone else might need it. Donate usable furniture and clothes to charity shops, schools, community centres, friends or neighbours. Find out more about recycling by visiting www.recyclingguide.org.uk.
Share! Take what you've learned, and pass the knowledge on to others. If every person you know could take one small step toward being greener, the collective effort could be phenomenal.

BIRTH & BEYOND
Preparing For Your Babies' Arrival The prospect of multiple births can be such a daunting one that many parents find it hard to think beyond that miraculous and improbable event. Try to bear in mind that once your babies are here, you will be very busy. The time before they arrive is a great opportunity to research some of the practical issues ahead of you, reading up on everything from what happens in a multiple birth to twin/triplet sleep routines. It’s a great idea to go along to your local twins club while you are still pregnant. There is nothing like meeting other parents of young twins, triplets or more, for finding out what you really need to know – such as which equipment you will need extra sets of. You may even be able to pick up some useful items second-hand. Twins clubs are also a great place to take any older siblings for a visit to get them used to the idea of two or more arriving. Clubs usually go out of their way to make expectant parents welcome, and once your babies are here, they will offer a haven of friendly and understanding company.
Please also consider joining Tamba. Membership costs from £27 (less for those on a low income) and benefits include a membersonly online messageboard where you can share experiences and pick up tips from other parents; a quarterly magazine; a pushchair/buggy guide; discounts with more than 100 companies; and access to useful resources (including factsheets, family days, and health and education professionals).
It’s recommended that you keep your babies in your room for the first six months if you have enough space. Many babies share a cot for the first month, sometimes longer, and research suggests that they tend to have similar sleeping patterns and don’t wake up more often than babies who sleep apart. For more on cotsharing, download Tamba’s guide Twins, Triplets and More: The First Year or our Sleep factsheet.
Looking ahead: feeding & sleeping
And finally . . .
Pregnancy is a good time to think about how you might feed your babies. If you want to breastfeed – and lots of multiples mums do – then it can help to attend antenatal classes specifically for multiple pregnancies, as they usually have a session on breastfeeding. Contact us at Tamba to find out more about our own antenatal classes for those expecting twins or more.
Multiples often arrive early – sometimes very early – so it’s a good idea to have your hospital bag packed by week 26.
If you are not sure about the relative merits of bottle-feeding, breastfeeding or a mixed approach, it can help to talk to other parents who have been there. Again, your local twins club is a great place to start. If you join Tamba you will also have access to our members-only messageboard. For a detailed account of how to breastfeed twins, triplets or more you can download Tamba’s booklet, Breastfeeding more than one.
Towards the end of your pregnancy, cook double portions when you prepare a meal and freeze the extra. Once your babies are here, having some ready-cooked meals on hand will be a bonus. Think ahead about getting some help. Paternity leave usually lasts two weeks, plus your partner may be able to take a week or two extra of holiday or unpaid. Beyond that, don’t be afraid to organise any willing family or friends into a rota so that you know you will have an extra pair of hands arriving at regular intervals. There may also be other sources of free help locally such as Homestart, student maternity nurses or childcare students. Homestart can be invaluable for parents of multiples, but it takes a while to process the paperwork. If you want to have that option then get it underway before the babies arrive. For more on getting ready, what to put in your hospital bag and preparing older siblings for the arrival of twins, triplets or more, please download our Healthy Multiple Pregnancy Guide. For more information about twins and multiple births or to find your nearest twins club email enquiries@tamba.org.uk or call Twinline our free helpline 0800 1380509 which is open 7days a week between 10am and 1pm or 7pm and 10pm. FOSTER CARE FORTNIGHT
Could You Be A Foster Carer? This Foster Care Fortnight (13-26 May) the Fostering Network is asking people to get in the frame and consider becoming a foster carer.
Those who are approved to foster are called on to be extraordinary carers looking after children who often have extraordinary needs. Foster carers are more than ever frontline professionals serving society and more importantly, the children in their care.
Each looked-after child is an individual, often with complex needs. That is why they need foster carers with the right skills to help them develop and thrive, both in care and when they leave, whether that be because they return to their birth family, are adopted or live as an independent adult.
Foster carers are needed across the country, from all walks of life and with all different kinds of backgrounds. In particular, foster families are needed to offer homes for teenagers, disabled children and sibling groups.
That is why the Fostering Network estimates that 9,000 new foster carers are needed across the UK in 2013 alone, to provide homes for the almost 62,000 children currently living in foster care and the thousands more who will come into care during the year. We have called for more foster carers because each child needs a foster carer who is specifically trained to look after them and who offers the right skills and environment that can help them prosper.
38 myfamily
Hayley, a foster carer for the last two years, put herself in the frame and has never looked back. “I wanted to give something back to society. I wanted to do something to help families that needed it. I had a spare room and spare time so made the decision to become a foster carer,” she said. “It has without a doubt been the best decision I've ever made! I love how I've made a massive impact to families that I now feel a part of.”
Paula and her family have also put themselves in the frame despite extraordinary circumstances: “My husband is a paraplegic full time wheelchair user and we thought that at first we would not be able to foster due to his disability. But this has never been an issue due to a very supportive fostering service,” she explained. “None of the children placed with us have seen my husband’s disability as a problem, and we are able to show the children that whoever you are and whatever your problems, you can be someone. My husband works full time as a designer at Rolls Royce and is a great role model for the children that come to live with us.” If you believe you can be a member of this group of dedicated people who care for the UK’s most vulnerable children, put yourself in the frame by visiting www.couldyoufoster.org.uk today.

FOSTER CARE FORTNIGHT
Consider fostering and give a child in need love, care and stability It is estimated that 8,000* new foster carers are needed to love and nurture children who can’t live with their own families. Parents and Children Together (PACT) is a charity which helps couples and single people to foster and adopt. Those with a spare room and a talent for looking after children can make a real difference in a child’s life and PACT foster carers receive an allowance of £335 per week. Children in foster care need careful parenting to support their self-esteem despite the disruption in their home lives. Many foster carers are already parents but special considerations are important for children who are living away from their birth family. PACT’s downloadable Guide to
looking after children – for a day, a weekend or longer has tips on helping children to express their feelings, encouraging good behaviour and handling temper tantrums plus ‘fun on a shoe string’ ideas to entertain children. (www.pactcharity.org/guide) Being a foster carer is fulfilling and many children fostered with PACT families stay long term. Debbie explains, “Seeing my foster child move on from the anxious, angry girl who arrived with us, to the confident, self assured young woman who lives with us now provides me with the greatest reward I could imagine.” For information about fostering with PACT visit the A37 stand at Mums Show Live, phone PACT on 0300 456 4800 or visit
Fostering charity launches a major new programme backed by Comic Relief A GROUND-BREAKING new programme that promises to transform the lives of children in care is being launched by leading charity the Fostering Network. Over the next four years the Head, Heart, Hands programme will introduce a new way of working in foster care called social pedagogy; a radical approach that already shapes how children in care are looked after in many countries across Europe. Through the £4 million programme, which is part-funded by Comic Relief, foster carers and social workers in six demonstration sites across England and Scotland will be trained on how to use social pedagogy to change the way they look after children in care. Rather than emphasising processes and procedures, social pedagogy
focuses on supporting foster carers to help children in care build positive relationships so they find more stability, have better outcomes and improve their long-term wellbeing. The foster carers and social workers involved will use social pedagogy, which is based on a unique blend of academic knowledge (head), an understanding of emotions (heart) and practical daily activities (hands), to help children in care thrive.
www.pactcharity.org/Fostering. PACT supports families in London and the South. * www.fostering.net/england
The six demonstration sites will make systemic and cultural changes to support the new approach, with an intensive learning and development programme for foster carers and social workers, and continuing support from trained social pedagogues. Amanda Mercer, a foster carer from Fife in Scotland who already practices social pedagogy, said: “I am really passionate about social pedagogy. Not only does it recognise and value the role of foster carers; it also helps everyone who works with children in care to really understand what a child needs to feel safe, secure, and confident’’. The programme is led by the Fostering Network in partnership with Jacaranda Development and ThemPra Social Pedagogy, and will be evaluated by a team led by the Centre for Child and Family Research at Loughborough University. On completion of the programme, the Fostering Network intends to work with the UK's four Governments and other fostering services to encourage and support them to introduce social pedagogy more widely.

FROM BUMP TO BUSINESS
Ever thought of being a
self-employed mum? For mums, September is like the second January of the year. The children go back to school, we have more time on our hands and our thoughts turn to starting something new. This could be a new job or taking a course, but many mums these days are starting their own businesses.
If you’re thinking of launching in September, you need to start work now.
Some mums decide to be their own boss because they have a talent they want to turn into a career, for example artists and crafters. Others want to work flexibly around the family and find self-employment offers far more freedom than a job ever could.
To get started, think about your skills and interests and then try to match them up with a group of people who might need them. If you’ve got admin skills, you could offer your services to small businesses on a freelance basis as a virtual assistant. Do you have a skill you could teach? Perhaps you could run a series of courses in the evenings. And these are just service businesses, you
But why am I telling you this when we’re still not that far beyond the Easter holidays? Well, September will be here before you know it. The summer terms passes in a flash and the summer holidays are certainly not the best time to get any kind of work done!
40 myfamily
Many mum-owned businesses provide products and services to families, such as selling toys, gifts and running baby classes. The busiest times for these businesses are on the run up to Christmas, so there’s actually a very small window of opportunity from midSeptember to October to do the bulk of your marketing for Christmas. If you want to be featured in magazines you need to be sending out your press releases in the early summer. So there really is no time to lose!
could also start an online shop that sells virtually anything, as long as there is a demand for those products. Then get out there and see if there really is a demand for what you can offer. Go and talk to people who might want your product or service and see if they would be prepared to pay you for what you want to offer. The chances are you’ll be solving a problem for them (e.g. they hate building flat-pack furniture, they are knee-deep in receipts and need help with bookkeeping or they have nowhere they like to take their babies) so how are they solving this problem now and would your solution be a better one for them? Finally – for now at least! – get planning. What do you need to do to get this product or service up for sale? How will you spread the word? Do you need to buy any stock, get posters printed or set up a simple website? Start planning now and you’ll be way ahead of those mums who have left it until September!

AUTISM NEWS
Autism’s GOT TALENT! Anna Kennedy Online would like to invite you to join us for ‘Autism’s Got Talent’ on Saturday 11th May at the Mermaid Theatre, London. This promises to be a great event, not only for those in the audience but also those who are coming to join us on the stage. It brings together a diverse group of people, who are all on the Autistic Spectrum, to show everyone just how talented they are.
As ever, in a bid to keep reaching out far and wide, we have performers that are coming to us from right across the country and even across the ocean! Especially for My Family Magazine readers, here is a sneak preview of some of the extremely talented performers that will be appearing on stage at Autism’s Got Talent on the 11th May . . .
HWLCC
All too often people make the mistake of thinking that anyone with a disability is capable of very little . . . HOLD THE PRESS . . . on this evening we will be showing everyone just what all these great people really are capable of and just how good they are at it!! Talent comes in many forms so, as you would expect the show covers many different genres ranging from performers with instruments to singers and dancers. We have some great performers who will not only be participating as soloists but also be coming together to perform in a group, something we are all too often told is too difficult for people with Autism to do! Talent stretches way beyond the field of performance; so on the night we will also be hearing from, and championing, people that have done other amazing things; showing great skills in such areas as writing, art and even extreme physical endurance. There will also be informative displays for the audience to view in the foyer beforehand. Join us when the doors open at 6pm and take advantage of the displays in plenty of time before the grand performance starts. This night will surely open the eyes of those who previously didn’t realise just what someone on the Autistic Spectrum can be capable of, not just a night to celebrate a small section of people, but a celebration of EVERYONE that is on the Spectrum.

West London Community College is a wellestablished Independent Living Skills provision for adults with an Autistic Spectrum Condition or Asperger Syndrome. HJames
Hobley
James was diagnosed with autism at 5 years old, he had learning difficulties and at 9 years old couldn't read or write and hardly spoke. Because he tip toe walked, James wore splints on both legs and orthopaedic boots; then he discovered dance! Within 6 months of dancing James threw away his splints and boots, and learned to read and write. Since then, James has gone on to win a number of awards and trophies, and in 2011 wowed the nation with his dancing on Britain’s Got Talent. Tesco Mum of the Year award for
Anna Kennedy A regular to the pages of My Family, Anna Kennedy OBE is known by many of us as a pretty amazing lady! Her remarkable work has helped many individuals with autism both in her own community and beyond the shores of the UK. As the mother of two autistic sons, she knows first-hand the struggle that half a million adults and children in the UK with autism, and their families, face every day.
Not to be underestimated because of her slight appearance, Anna is a driving force in the autism community. The award winning mum’s capacity to push the boundaries and get things done is inspirational. As well as caring for her sons Patrick who is 23 and Angelo aged 19, Anna is still heavily involved in the running of Hillingdon Manor School, which she remortgaged her house to set up in 1999.
But, busy Anna’s catalogue of responsibilities doesn’t end there; West London Community College which she set up in 2001, The Old Vicarage residential home which she founded in 2004, and Baston House School, Kent, which saw the first children walk through the doors in 2011, are also featured in her schedule each week. In addition, she provides training for the NSPCC and Childline on the issue of disability bullying and speaks about autism all over the UK. Anna is in the process of writing a second book; a heartwarming and inspiring update of life since Not Stupid which she wrote in 2008. The book will provide other parents of children on the spectrum, with advice and guidance for coping with autism. The exceptional mum plans to bring together a large number of special needs and mainstream schools to raise money for autism charities, with Step In The Right Direction Autism Dance Day,
on 27th April 2013. She is the woman behind the production of Autism’s Got Talent, at the Mermaid Theatre, London, on Saturday 11 May and, surprisingly, she still finds time to provide information and support to over 50,000 international followers through her website annakennedyonline.com.
It is therefore understandable that this wonderful lady recently scooped the title of Achieving Mum at the Tesco Mum of the Year Awards in March. Judges said “Anna’s single handed determination to help families living with autism, while also being a full-time carer to her two sons, is truly inspirational.”
If you missed the Tesco Mum of the Year Awards which was broadcast on channel 5 on Mother’s Day, you can catch up by visiting www.channel5.com/shows/tesco-mum-of-the-year.
