FAMILY WELLBEING

Looking after your baby:

Keep Cool & Sleep Safe Keep Cool

When you’re outside . . .

Summertime can be a fantastic time for families, but during the early months of an infant’s life their temperature control system will not have fully developed and overheating (thought to be an important risk factor in cot death) is something every parent and grandparent should be aware of.

l Keep your baby out of direct sunlight. Use a parasol or umbrella to keep the sun off l Protect your baby's head with a sun-hat, and their skin with loose-fitting light cotton clothes l Always use a high-factor sunblock

Here are The Lullaby Trust’’s ten top tips which will ensure that your baby stays as cool as possible this summer. When you’re inside . . . l The room your baby sleeps in will be cooler if you close curtains and open all windows during the day l Use as few clothes or bedclothes as possible l Know what the coolest room in your home is so that you know where to take your baby to cool off

When you’re in the car . . . l Use window shades and make sure all the windows (except those with shades) are open and the car fan is on l Never leave your baby in the car Generally . . . l Offer your baby plenty to drink l In very hot weather, sponge your baby down regularly with slightly warm water.

This is our recommended safe sleeping environment for a baby up to 6 months old

Sleep Safe Try to remember that cot death is rare and that if you follow advice such as sleeping your baby on the back, you will be reducing their risk of cot death considerably. Since the introduction of our 'reduce the risk of cot death' campaign in 1991 the number of babies dying has fallen by 70%. Advances in research mean we are regularly discovering new positive steps parents can take. Advice for parents to reduce the risk of cot death: l Place your baby on the back to sleep (and not on the front or side) l Cut smoking in pregnancy — dads too! And don’t let anyone smoke in the same room as your baby l The safest place for your baby to sleep is in a crib or cot in a room with you for the first six months l Do not let your baby get too hot, and keep your baby’s head uncovered l Never sleep with your baby on a sofa or armchair It’s dangerous for your baby to sleep in your bed if you (or your partner): l are a smoker (even if you never smoke in bed or at home) l have been drinking alcohol l take medication or drugs that make you drowsy l feel very tired l if your baby was premature (born before 37 weeks) l if your baby was low birth weight (less than 2.5kg or 51/2lb) l if your baby is less than 4 months old. l Settling your baby to sleep with a dummy can reduce the risk of cot death, even if the dummy falls out while your baby is asleep. l Breastfeed your baby. Establish breastfeeding before starting to use a dummy.

FAMILY WELLBEING

In-Car Safety when Travelling with Children We are Hannah and Phil Batham, the founders of BeltUpp. We are concerned as parents for the safety of our children and have done a lot of research into child safety products, to fully understand what constitutes as safe and legal. During the development of BeltUpp we have spoken to many people about the safety of children in cars, one in particular is significant; it was a consultant at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, who has seen on many occasions, children in A&E that have been involved in a road traffic accident. He commented that the children that are in the slumped over

car seatbelt to secure both the child and seat in place. The car seatbelt has only 3 points of attachment, so one shoulder is always unrestrained. This can look and feel less safe than the earlier 5 point harness. We all know that children still fall asleep at this young age – if they slump forward in the seat they can end up with little or no support as the shoulders can become unrestrained. A crash test performed when a dummy is slumped forward in a group 2 car seat has horrifying results. There are many car safety advice websites that offer information and advice on how to fit your child’s seat properly. It’s always worth a visit to these, as even experienced car seat operators (parents) need a ‘refresh’!

Did you know that . . . ? position or in badly fitted seats on many occasions do not survive. On another occasion, we were having BeltUpp crash tested at the Transport Research Laboratory, where we were made aware of how unsafe counterfeit seats are and just how many are sold in the UK. This is shocking and adds to the confusion that parents face when choosing the correct seat for their child. We must all do all we can to keep our children safe in our cars. Many parents however are unsure how to fit their car seats correctly and also what type of car seat to buy to suit both their needs and their car.

For example . . . Babies go from the security of Group 0/1 seats in reclined position with 5point harnesses, which give equal support and pressure in 5 different places. The seat itself is secured separately by the car seat belt, this can be quite complex as there are two different systems involved. The next step is to the Group 2 seat. This is different as it uses the

Children must use the correct car seat until they reach 135 centimetres tall or age 12, the type of car seat your child needs depends on their weight. Do not put a rear facing seat in the front passenger seat of the car where there is an active airbag. You must deactivate any frontal airbags before fitting a rear-facing baby seat. If possible a forward facing seat should be positioned correctly on the back seat, this is safer as an active airbag could cause injury to the child when it deploys. When children first move out of the forwardfacing child seats into booster seats and cushions, initially, ones with backs may provide a better fit for the seat belt. Booster seats with side wings will also help to prevent injury in a side impact by protecting a child's head, and on some seats, the height of the side wings can be adjusted as the child grows. Booster seats and booster cushions can be used in the front or rear of the car, but again it is safer to put them in the rear of the car. When using a group 2/3 seat, the seat belt should always be worn as tight as possible, the lap belt should go over the pelvic region not the stomach, and the diagonal strap should rest over the shoulder and not the neck. Even in a minor crash, an unrestrained child would be thrown about inside the vehicle, injuring themselves and others. Worse still, they could even be thrown from the car through one of the windows. To find out what type of child restraint your child needs visit www.childcarseats.org.uk.

BeltUpp and Keep Little Ones Safe We are all, as parents, so concerned when our children are babies and young toddlers as to the fitting of their car seats and the security they are in. We then move them to the Group 2 seat with the impression that they will be as safe! When our children fall asleep in the Group 2 seat they can slump forward into a very dangerous position. The car seatbelt slowly releases as the child falls forward. The seatbelt should be holding both the child and seat in a tight upright position for it to be ‘classed’ as safe. The BeltUpp device has been designed to solve this problem.

BeltUpp is an additional belt that connects easily to the existing seat belt in two places, feeding through the spare eyelet in the seat and forming a ‘X’ pattern on the child’s chest. The belt is then adjusted easily so that it is a snug fit. BeltUpp will hold the child in a safe and upright position in the seat at all times.

BeltUpp has been fully tested to ECE 44-04 regulations and approved by the Fire Service. R.R.P £17.99 To find out more Telephone 01455 293047 or visit

Give Your Family’s Online Profile the Royal Treatment What Will and Kate can teach us about protecting your family’s online privacy It seems the whole country has come down with baby brain – thanks to the imminent arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s royal baby. The notoriously tight-lipped Royal Family kept many of the details of Kate’s pregnancy quiet and you can be sure that focus on privacy will continue after the baby is born. But these days, it’s not just the Royals who are concerned about the privacy of their children. More and more parents are holding back from posting photos and updates of their new baby online, particularly on sites like Facebook.

particular preferences when it comes to posting photos and updates (or not!) as long as you let them know in advance.

Have a Press Shot You and your family may not make the cover of a newspaper, but your baby is big news for many family and friends. The Royal Family ensures there are plenty of official photographs

With the rise of massive social networks and powerful search tools, privacy has become something every family thinks about, even when not followed by paparazzi. The Royal Family controls their online presence with carefully chosen press images and uses the right social networks for the right occasions – and this online consciousness can inspire every family.

When privacy is important, it’s all about choosing the right place to save and securely share your special moments with the people who matter most. Just because Will and Kate aren’t posting every baby photo to Instagram doesn’t mean they won’t want to keep the rest of the Royal Family in the loop as their baby grows.

Not every moment should be shared with everyone in the world. Kate doesn’t have a Facebook profile at all, while Will has a completely private account under a pseudonym – and never posts pictures. While most people don’t need to make up a fake name to use Facebook, looking carefully at the security settings and limiting who can see your profile ensures only the people you trust see your updates.

Services like 23snaps (www.23snaps.com), the free private app and website that lets parents securely save and share photos, videos and updates of their children with family and close friends, help privacy-conscious families capture precious memories without publicising them to the world.

There’s nothing wrong with sharing special family moments with a wider audience, or posting your favourite snaps online. But it’s worth taking inspiration from the Royal Family and spending some time thinking about what photos, videos and updates you want to make public, and what should stay private.

We all love to have fun in the sun. But . . . You must be aware of the dangers, and how to stay safe and well, whilst at home or abroad. Sun protection isn’t just about slapping on some sunscreen, there are many ways in which you can protect you and your family. Remember, babies and children have much thinner skin, making them more prone to burning. TOP TIPS l Seek shade between the hours of 11am and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest. l Wear a T shirt and wide brimmed hat for extra protection (85% of fabrics have an SPF greater than 20) l Protecting your eyes is vital. Opt for 100% UVA/UVB block out, and look out for the CE mark or UV400 label. l Apply at least an SPF15 sunscreen and reapply regularly.

So how do you choose a sunscreen? and how and when should you be applying it? Physical

Eczema prone skin Ouch! Sun cream can be a nightmare, causing irritations and stinging. l Always check the labels for ingredients that could cause a reaction. l Patch test new sun creams before applying to the whole body. l Natural sunscreen may help minimise the risk of reactions. Put emollient and steroid creams on first then apply the SPF cream after 30 mins. Always reapply regularly. If sunburn occurs take painkillers to help reduce the pain, apply a cooling after sun/calamine or aloe vera cream to soothe the skin. Stay out of the sun until the redness disappears. If there is any swelling or blisters seek medical help.

What are UVA and UVB? UVA the star rating – Penetrates deeply and ages the skin. UVB your SPF factor – is the chief sun burner and increases the risk of skin cancer Always opt for a broad-spectrum sun cream that provides protection against both the suns UVA/UVB rays.

HOLIDAY & LEISURE

Carry on Camping! Camping is cheap, green, great fun and the best way to get up close and personal with Britain's most sumptuous scenery. So pack up your tent and join our tour of Britain's perfect pitches. Scotland Ahh, Scotland. Lochs, glens, heather-flecked hillsides - it really is the most wonderful place to pitch your tent. But did you know that unlike most of England, Scotland’s relaxed trespassing laws allow camping in open country? Camping in the wilderness of the Highlands is a joy and it’s free! Be sure to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

Cornwall If it’s sea and surf you’re after, Cornwall has cracking camping with access to some wonderful beaches, good weather and a relaxed lifestyle. A great family option is Trevornick Holiday Park in Cornwall overlooking Holywell Bay beach. Or try Dennis Cove Camping in Padstow with fabulous views across the bay.

The Lake District Camping in the lakes is the best way to experience England’s most romantic landscape. Try the National Trust operated Great Langdale site. The facilities are excellent and tents sit right in the shadow of the Great Langdale Pikes. Perfect for energetic hikes or quiet relaxation.

The New Forest

Dartmoor

What could be better than sleeping under the ancient oaks and gnarled beeches of the New Forest? In fact, the New Forest National Park has much more to offer than woodland. The enormous Roundhill campsite, with room for around 500 pitches, is a beauty. Choose from private wooded glades or smooth heathland and go horse riding, cycling or exploring down the Beaulieu River.

Dartmoor National Park is a rugged, eerily beautiful place which is great for hiking, climbing and potholing. It’s also the only place in England where wild camping is permissible for a few nights. Pitch your tent under craggy, gritstone tors and share your breakfast with wild Dartmoor ponies. Check the Dartmoor National Park website for advice and guidelines.

London Believe it or not, there are several excellent campsites within striking distance of central London. You can save a packet by camping in the capital and it’s more convenient than you might think. Try Abbey Wood campsite in south London, only 35 minutes by train to the centre, or Crystal Palace Caravan Club that’s on a bus route to Oxford Circus.

Norfolk Head east to the Norfolk Broads and the idyllic Clippesby Hall campsite. Bordered on all sides by lush greenery it manages to please allcomers with its mix of top-notch facilities and rural charm. Go boating on the broads or head to the coast. And proving there really is something for everyone, there’s an excellent pub onsite, too.

Snowdonia Rough, rugged and with adventure sports aplenty, Snowdonia National Park is magnificent. And, yes, you’ve guessed it, the best way to get right in on the action is to camp. Gwern Gôf Isaf Farm is set right in the heart of the mountains beneath the brooding Tryfan and there’s abseiling and climbing terrain on site.

Celebrating 90 years of camping Fen Farm Caravan and Camping Site, Mersea Island welcomed its first campers, the Cosway family in 1923. Since then, the familyowned site was awarded Regional Winner – East of England by Practical Caravan Magazine in their Top 100 Parks guide, placed 19th overall in 2010 and joint 25th in 2011, as well as receiving the David Bellamy Conservation Gold Award annually since 1999. Mersea itself, is a tiny island but it has much to offer its visitors, including safe beaches, footpath walks through beautiful countryside, a country park, great food and drink, a vineyard, brewery and much more. As the saying goes ‘Good things, come in small packages!’

Pembrokeshire

Tired of tents?

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is a Welsh jewel. Undeveloped, peppered with castles and about as charming as landscapes get, camping here is a rare pleasure. Fishguard Bay Caravan and Camping Park takes full advantage of this sweetest of spots, with stellar views across the bay.

If a traditional tent doesn’t appeal, why not stay in a tipi or a wigwam, a gypsy caravan or a classic vw campervan? For an alternative camping experience check out www.cornishcampers.co.uk or www.eastthornecornwall.co.uk For even more inspirational ways to enjoy our green and pleasant land visit

SPLASH TIME FUN

Swimming is Fun and Saves Lives Swimming is an excellent all round activity that exercises the whole body. It’s great fun, anyone can do it and it is a skill that opens the door to a huge range of waterbased activities such as surfing, water polo or even sailing. Swimming is not only one of the safest and most popular forms of exercise, it’s the only sport that can save your life. Swimming’s national governing body, the ASA, surveyed 3,501 primary schools for their report entitled “Learning the Lesson - the future of school swimming” on how many of their children have attained Key Stage 2 swimming requirements. It found that half of children aged 7 - 11 cannot swim the length of a typical swimming pool (25 metres) unaided, despite swimming being a compulsory element of the national curriculum. This equates to 1.1 million children that are unable to be safe in and around water. His Royal Highness, The Duke of Cambridge and patron of the English Schools Swimming Association, supports the ASA’s calls for swimming to be accessible for all children:

16 myfamily

“The ASA has a belief – a vision, which I share – that every child has the right to learn to swim. Swimming is unique – it is the only sport that can save lives – which is why I’m so keen for school swimming to be accessible for all children at all primary schools. “The ability to swim changes lives – it brings huge joy and it can keep us fit and healthy. But above all, it can keep us safe, which is why I’m pleased to lend my support to this campaign.” 98% of parents share the ASA’s vision of every child learning to swim before they leave primary school. Parents can actively support their child’s progress through regular family trips to the pool. A fun environment is the best way for children to learn and acquire new skills, so swimming as a family will grow a child’s confidence and ensure a successful and memorable learn to swim experience. Having fun and playing games in the water will build a strong foundation for a child to develop new skills. The ASA have a whole host of great games for the pool such as Fishy in the Middle and Underwater Humming. You can find out how to play these games and loads more on the ASA website, www.swimming.org/go The British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Pathway is the national syllabus to assist and support the delivery of swimming lessons. Used in more than 1,000 swimming programmes nationwide, as well as overseas, it is already the most successful sports programme of its kind.

We encourage everyone to check that their swimming lessons are using the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Pathway to ensure children receive the best possible instruction based on the swimming expertise of the ASA. Your child can start learning to swim earlier than you might think. Many pools offer adult and child swimming classes from six months upwards and this is an excellent way to engage your child in water activities in a fun environment. The ASA has produced a Learn to Swim Parent’s Guide for parents to support their child through their aquatic journey, available from swimgb.com Parents often state their own lack of confidence in the water as a barrier to swimming with their children, but learning to swim is a fantastic experience and has no age limit. Thousands of adults take the plunge and learn to be more confident in water each year. Many pools deliver specialised adult lessons in a friendly and supportive environment for all abilities in line with ASA recommendations, whether you’re a beginner, a returner or a more advanced swimmer looking to refine your technique. If the fox makes it all the way around to where the goose was sitting and sits in their space, then the goose becomes the fox. But if the goose tags the fox while they’re running around, the goose goes back to their space and the fox has to start again.

ANNA’S AUTISM GUIDE

Life on the Spectrum by Jo Redman Autism Campaigner, Anna Kennedy OBE met Kickboxing World Champion, Jo Redman on Twitter after she watched Anna’s ITV News interview about her anti bullying campaign ‘Give us a Break!’ In June, Jo joined Anna Kennedy’s team as Patron of her autism charity Anna Kennedy Online. Jo explains how her diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome has changed her life . . .

‘‘

Today I am so different to the person I was several years ago – I still look the same, sound the same and have all the same interests but how I look at my life and how I view myself has completely changed. I actually grew up without a diagnosis and life was pretty difficult. I didn’t know why I struggled and felt different. My parents didn’t know why their daughter wouldn’t join in with other children and my teachers just looked at me as a quiet, good little girl. There was some amount of bullying at school, a lot of it was active isolation meaning they sought to leave me out but there was also name calling such as

‘spastic’ and ‘freak’. Some of the name calling was probably pretty standard for kids at that time but it had a much larger impact on me, as I felt different already. Fortunately for me I never experienced any physical bullying at school. It was always other children laughing at my expense over something - I had no idea why they were laughing. I would go through periods of not talking all through playschool, infant, junior and senior school – even into the workplace. Into my later school years things started to change around me more rapidly. I just got used to what my friends interests were, and then suddenly they all changed into teenagers interested in boys, make

up and pop bands. It felt hopeless, I had no interest in a lot of the activities they pursued, and I didn’t know how to join in! There were exams coming up and I didn’t know how to revise, I couldn’t concentrate on it. I became so anxious and down, that my teachers noticed and there was a big fuss about it all. This is probably the point at which I should have been diagnosed but seeing how upset my mum was about the prospect of taking me to the doctors, I begged her not to and tried to pretend everything was ok. I worked out how people expected me to act and tried to

22 myfamily

just be that, although it made me desperately unhappy and was very tiring! After I left school, I had a massive shock going into the world of work. I had absolutely no idea how it all worked and I really don’t know how I managed to keep my first job which was as a receptionist, as I am someone who doesn’t really like using the telephone! I got through this job by creating my own processes on how I would carry out my work and answer the phone. At the time I didn’t know I was creating processes but looking back, I can see that I did.

13:51

Page 23

ANNA’S AUTISM GUIDE I worked in an office with other women and there was always friction and I experienced some bullying. It got to the point where I would walk into the office in the morning and certain people wouldn’t say ‘good morning’ to me like they did to everyone else. There were email conversations going on between others in the room, gossiping around the coffee machine, conversations stopping as I walked in, and even my incoming emails were forwarded to them so they could see what I was ‘up to’. My mum was taken ill and eventually diagnosed with MS, so I had a lot of stress in my home life. I was trying to keep it together for the rest of my family and I didn’t know how to handle the emotional impact of what was happening to my mum. It was only when this situation started to settle down that it really

affected me. I got so anxious about certain things, I struggled to verbalise things and would withdraw into myself and not communicate at all. It got to the point where enough was enough! I decided I needed to know why I felt so different and what was wrong with me, why couldn’t I do things other people were doing? I had a very good manager at work, who is now a very good friend, and supported me into going to the doctors. It took years and a crisis period for the mental health team to refer me for an assessment for Asperger Syndrome. When I was diagnosed it was the biggest turning point in my life. I felt so liberated to have the diagnosis because all the things I had worried about, were no longer a mystery and all the experiences in my past started to make sense to me.

The psychologist who diagnosed me was so helpful. She said to me that the way I behaved, reacted and thought was not wrong, but nor was it right, it was just different to how other people might behave, react and think and that was ok. And at 23 years old, that was the first time somebody had told me it was ok to just be me – that had a huge impact on me. Together with my husband who I’d met in sixth form, I learnt how I could ‘manage’ my life in a way that enabled me to do the things I wanted to do – and since diagnosis, I have done a lot of things.

these tasks onto.

I almost run my life like a business, I have processes for all of the housework, I set objectives for everything I want to achieve, and break these down into targets and then into tasks. I have a giant timetable I use to schedule all

I started kickboxing when I was 13 with my dad, he thought it would help my confidence. Initially I set myself three goals – to be a black belt, to fight for England and to be a World Champion. I have now successfully done all three!

Autism’s GOT TALENT!

by My Family Editor, Karen Reddell

On Saturday 11th May, excitement filled the air as we arrived at The Mermaid Theatre, London, for Autism’s Got Talent. As ‘the voice’ Peter Dickson introduced Autism’s Got Talent 2013, a loud cheer and round of applause filled the theatre.

Hosts, Anna Kennedy OBE, founder of Anna Kennedy Online, the autism charity behind the show and Maggie Paterson, from the Pineapple Performing Arts School, introduced the first act of the evening; the dancers from Pineapple, burst on to the stage to start the show with an outstanding performance that quite simply left us all wanting more!

All the way from Canada, 10-year-old Colin Brennan sang ‘Different’ from Disney’s ‘Honk’, which gave a moving insight into how life on the spectrum can feel. Brilliant vocal performances came from Joseph Ferris, James Mason, Ashton McAlpine and Martin Finn, who returned to the Autism’s Got Talent stage for a second year, with an emotional performance of ‘Catch the Wind’ – which I can honestly say bought a tear to my eye. Acts from Hillingdon Manor School also performed, including singers The Manor, street dance crew School Life and rock band Submersus who blew us away with their performance of ‘Paranoid’. A performance of Cinderella by students from West London Community College had us all in stitches. The David Stinson Theatre School and the dancer James Hobley were simply amazing to watch.

Autism’s Got Talent is a groundbreaking production that has now firmly placed itself as My Family Magazine’s MUST SEE show of the year! With Autism’s Got Talent 2014 already being planned, Anna Kennedy is urging performers to get involved. Email lisa.robins@thevines.org.uk to find out how you or someone you know can be part of next year’s show.

Throughout the evening we were treated to the awesome vocals of 21-year-old singer Callum Abbiss, the lovely Madeleine Hardy – who belted out ‘Make You Feel My Love’ and Marie Gorton, who’s operatic performance raised the roof! But it wasn’t just about singing and dancing! Owen Cordwell, a young autistic boy from Wellingborough who biked 25km to raise money to help other people with autism, presented a fundraising cheque for £722.50 to the charity Anna Kennedy Online. Inspirational Jo Redman gave an emotional and brave account of her diagnosis and how it helped her to take the kickboxing World Champion title – twice!

24 myfamily

Way too soon, the evening came to a close as Autism Campaigner Anna Kennedy and dance partner Michael John French took to the stage to perform a breathtaking tap routine, before leading all the performers on to the stage for the finale – Gangnam Style!

ANNA’S AUTISM GUIDE

People with Autism are ‘Feeling the Impact’ of Government Cuts Act Now for Autism celebrate their third birthday this month. During the last three years Act Now for Autism has campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness about how the cuts to budgets and the changes to benefits are having an impact on the autism community. In July 2010, Act Now for Autism asked the autism community how they felt the cuts and changes to benefits would affect them. 2943 people flooded us with their concerns and anxieties about how life was going to change for them. We decided earlier this year that we would go back to the autism community and ask them how the cuts that have been made so far were affecting their lives. We rolled out a new report ‘Feeling the Impact’ at the autism show in Manchester at the end of June.

Financially the cuts are now really beginning to bite! The bedroom tax is really taking its toll on parents who have to choose between paying an extra £14 a week for what is now considered an extra room, or the health and well-being of their children. It can be very difficult, and in some instances completely unsafe for siblings to share a bedroom with a brother or sister who has autism. Adults with autism are living in fear and dread about the change over from DLA to the new Personal Independence Payment benefit. The

new benefit will include a face-to-face assessment, the thought of which is having a big impact on adults with autism. Although there is no doubt that the cuts and changes to benefits are having a financial impact on our community, it is the emotional impact that is without doubt having the biggest effect. Act Now for Autism and our now 12,000 supporters, will continue to raise awareness of the damage that the cuts and changes to benefits are having on our lives. We will keep marching on!

GIFT INSPIRATIONS

Guilt-Free Gifts It seems strange to use the word ‘gift’ and ‘guilt’ in the same sentence, after all gift giving is a way of expressing your gratitude, recognition and appreciation for someone special. Giving a gift can strengthen relationships between family, friends and even business clients. But, when we buy a gift - isn’t it our duty to think about how and where it was made? The highstreet is full of plastic and mass produced items, cheaply made abroad with little consideration given to environmental and ethical issues associated with working conditions. Some workers (sometimes children) are working 12-14 hours a day, seven days a week, for very little money. Working conditions can be miserable and sometimes even dangerous, with some workers suffering abuse at the hands of employers.

However this doesn’t have to be, there are plenty of gift options around that you don’t have to feel guilty about. In this issue My Family our ‘Guilt Free Gift Guide’ will help you make more informed choices about the gifts that you buy, as well as a few inspirations from companies that we love.

Buy British The ‘Made in Britain’ tag is a powerful piece of branding to the ethical and environmentally savvy shopper. In Britain, we are fortunate to have an abundance of home-grown industry and innovations right on our doorstep. There are numerous skilled craftsmen and women, who are carrying on the proud tradition of making outstanding products in studios, workshops, factories, and farms throughout the British Isles. When you buy British you know that you are: n supporting ethical production, fair wages and decent working conditions n reducing the environmental impact of imported goods n strengthening British production and British capabilities n assisting future growth and prosperity n supporting homegrown opportunities for us and our children

Hand Made Few gifts are more appreciated than those that have been made by hand. When you give a handmade gift to a loved one, they know that your intention was to make it both personal and unique; that you chose something especially for them. Quite often handmade gifts are are one-off’s which solves embarrassment of giving an identical gift as someone else. Many are made to order or personalised to your own specification, but as handmade gifts are very rarely mass-produced make sure that you allow plenty of time for your order to arrive.

Fair Trade Buy a Fairtrade gift and you will be helping farmers and workers in the developing world to improve the quality of their lives and their futures. Fairtrade connects disadvantaged producers and consumers, promotes fairer trading conditions and empowers producers to combat poverty, strengthen their position in world markets and take more control over their lives.

Greener Gifts Instead of a gift item, give a special experience like theatre tickets. If you’re buying for the family activist think about giving a conservation gift like an acre of rainforest, adopt an endangered animal or make a donation to a chosen charity, as this is likely deliver the warm, fuzzy feeling, that gift giving is all about.

Choose Organic Giving an Organic gift is good for you and your planet, is kind to animals and wildlife, and allows you to make a big difference – simply through the way you shop. Here are some great reasons to choose an organic gift: n Organic farms respect our water resources n Organic farmers build healthy soil n Organic farmers work in harmony with nature n Organic producers are leaders in innovative research n Organic producers strive to preserve diversity n Organic farming help to keep rural communities healthy n Organic shoppers have abundant choice of foods and non-foods gifts alike! With all these benefits, it’s easy to see why organic delivers such good value for money.

PERFORMING ARTS

Skills That Children Can Learn from Performing Arts Getting your child involved in performing arts can really help them to develop real life skills. Involvement in the performing arts can improve critical and creative thinking, hand-eye coordination, motor skills, and social skills like taking turns, sharing and negotiating.

There is more to be gained in getting involved than just finding a hobby for your child. Their participation in dance, music, opera, theatre, magic, acting, circus arts and musical theatre, is a great way to boost their self-esteem. Performing arts, will help them think creatively, to be spontaneous and approach tasks from a different perspective. By regularly using their creativity, it will come more naturally to them now and in their future lives. Performance will teach them different ways to move and communicate, how to use nonverbal communication and body language; this will not only help them to make their performance come alive but how to effectively communicate their own emotions. Learning new skills and techniques will challenge your child, as it requires practice and perseverance. As they progress and improve, they will gain confidence in themselves, become more self-aware and when their

efforts result in a finished performance, they learn to associate dedication with a feeling of accomplishment. These skills can also improve a child’s ability to concentrate and focus in other aspects of their life like school and exams.

Pop into Popdance Tots!

Style on offer tots will love learning the dance moves of the stars.

Does your little one love to boogie? Popdance Tots is a specially choreographed class where children ages three to five can dance to the music they love.

Founder and mum of two Sue Wybrow had the idea for Popdance when she couldn’t find a class that combined a good workout with a lot of fun. Working with some fantastic dance teachers the model for Popdance was born; a class where there is no pressure to get the steps right, people can truly let their hair down and tone up. It wasn’t long before people were enquiring about classes for children, and then even younger ones. After all it’s the perfect way to introduce tots to exercise without any stress!

Tailored to pre-schoolers the classes encourage little ones to have a lot of fun while moving (and probably jumping) around with the help of some popular tunes and ultimately benefiting from getting some exercise. With everything from One Direction to Gangnam

Parents can rest assured their little ones will love their Popdance class, as the experienced teachers work hard to make sure all classes have a relaxed, informal and welcoming atmosphere so nobody need feel shy or nervous about getting involved. PERFORMING ARTS

Stagecoach Theatre Arts celebrates 25 years Children of all ages and backgrounds have always been drawn to the performing arts, and with good reason: acting, singing and dancing is fun. But what’s sometimes overlooked are the educational and developmental benefits that these activities can bring to young people. Successful performance relies on discipline, commitment and excellent communication; qualities that stand children in good stead both academically and in later life. The excitement of working out a dance routine, immersing yourself in a character or hitting the right note gives children the opportunity to express their creativity, at the same time as building their confidence and self-esteem. For twenty-five years, Stagecoach Theatre Arts has been dedicated to providing high quality performing arts education to young students. In stagecoach classes, young people are encouraged to develop and hone skills in singing, dancing and acting, to stretch their imaginations, learning to think creatively. High on the list of Stagecoach’s priorities is a desire that Stagecoach classes should be fun! At the same time, they are constantly striving for educational excellence. Students develop their aptitude in numeracy and

improve literacy with fun challenges such as performing scripts and learning a dance routine or a song with a peer group. 600 schools around the globe in 10 countries worldwide indicate that Stagecoach have a good formula.

energy and enable wonderful things to happen both individually and collectively through the experience of perfoming arts at Stagecoach. This year, to celebrate the birth of Stagecoach in 1988, 3,000 Stagecoach students were given an unforgettable experience when they got the chance to perform in the biggest ever staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS at the Birmingham NIA.

However, a more subtle measure of Stagecoach’s ‘success’ lies in its provision in each school of a safe space in which students can take creative risks. A student who starts with an attitude of ‘I can’t’ almost always progresses to ‘I can’ and ‘I will!’. Carefully trained Principals and dynamic teachers working to create an atmosphere of trust are key to this as is the exciting curriculum that stimulates students to turn their ideas into performance expression. The synergy between singing, dancing and acting can release a unique energy in young people. Stagecoach aims to harness that

The main cast consisted of 50 specially selected dancers and 500 singers in a grand choir from 13 Stagecoach schools. An additional 2,500 young performers from a further 47 schools throughout the UK, Malta, Germany and Ireland brought their own individual creative dances to life in a selection of the CATS score within the vast arena. These students were supported by a virtual choir of international students from Stagecoach schools in Canada, Germany, Gibraltar, Ireland, South Africa, Spain and USA. Theatre Arts Schools

Stagecoach Jonathan and Charlotte, operatic duo of Britain's Got Talent fame, opened the show. Charlotte, who is a former Stagecoach Chigwell student said, 'I always knew I wanted to be part of the performing arts world, and if it wasn't for my incredible eleven years of training and experiences at Stagecoach, I don't believe I'd be where I am now! I learnt so much from Stagecoach and I have so much to thank them for. Jonathan and I were incredibly honoured to have been involved in their 25th birthday celebrations.' Obviously not every child who takes part will go on to have a career in show-business, but while they’re enjoying their time in the spotlight and making new friends, there’s no doubt they’re also building skills for life. Relax, Read and Succeed this Summer! by Liz Walker, proprietor of Reading Chest

Whilst children might think of a ‘summer slide’ as a fun activity on a sunny day in the park, the ‘summer slide’ is also used to describe what happens to some children’s learning, including a decline in reading achievement when they are away from school during the long summer holidays. There has been lots of research to show that children who do not read during the summer holiday will start the next academic year with a reading level 2-3 months behind children who do read. The Education Secretary, Mr Gove wants to shorten summer holidays to reduce this setback in learning many children suffer by being away from school for such a long period. Regular reading during the holidays can prevent the ‘summer slide’ and give children the best start to their new school year. There are lots of opportunities for reading and learning during

the summer, but it is also important that children have access to the right level of books - to consolidate skills, feel successful and encourage voluntary reading. If children read books which are too difficult for them, they end up using all their energy to decode individual words rather than engaging with the book and enjoying it. Here are a few of Reading Chest’s favourite ways to keep your children reading and learning this summer: 1

2

Board games tend to get forgotten about during busy term times. Make the most of rainy days with Scrabble and Monopoly marathons or design your own! Write Grandad a postcard. (He will hopefully write one back!) Encourage other friends and family members to write postcards too.

Educational Apps! Children won’t think of it as ‘reading’ but there are many brilliant educational apps available. Apps4primaryschools.co.uk is full of apps which are recommended by teachers.

3

Invent your own ‘Barnaby Bear’ for children to take on their travels and write about in a scrap book. Children will be used to this idea from bringing home their class cuddly toy.

9

4

Play schools – with a whiteboard, a register and some bits printed from the internet – this can go on for hours!

5

Write lists – shopping lists, packing for holiday lists, birthday party lists . . .

6

Top Trumps are brilliant for reading, maths and learning facts. You could take it one step further and make your own.

10 Join www.readingchest.co.uk to receive regular deliveries of books at your child’s chosen reading level delivered to your door. Members also get reward charts, certificates and write book reviews online. Not only is it fun and motivational for children, it is also convenient for working parents who might not be able to make it to the library.

7 Design a rocket or something similar! Get children to draw up plans or instructions before letting them loose on your junk around the house to build their creation.

8

Bake! Everything involved in baking is fantastic for children’s learning, from reading the recipe, to weighing ingredients, to sharing cakes with friends.

If you want to keep the long summer holidays – keep your children reading!

School's out, but education's still in! By Simon Walsh, Maths Doctor, www.mathsdoctor.tv

Every parent ponders how to entertain their children during the long summer break from school, yet have you ever considered how to boost their education at the same time? It's not as daft, or difficult, as you may think. All leisure activity involves learning to some extent. For example, you're always using some kind of maths: packing a picnic basket uses shape, space and measuring ability; playing on a swing involves degrees and mechanics; answering "How long will it take to get there?" requires estimating skills; being in the right gear on a bicycle is all about ratio; and playing a computer game makes your brain carry out thousands of calculations every second. (Fortunately, a human brain is five times faster than the world's fastest super-computer!) It's vital that your kids get to grips with maths – not only to fulfil their academic potential but also, most importantly, because it develops problem-solving and critical thinking skills that aid social and emotional growth. Maths is like anything else: the more you practise – even without realising it – the better you become. So, with the help of our team of tutors at Maths Doctor, I've put together a taste of maths- and science-related holiday ideas for children aged 3-18. This is just a snapshot – the full list can be found at www.myfamilymagazine.co.uk/ index.php/whats-new. I hope these ideas inspire you and your kids to find even more engaging, educational things to do, no matter where you are this summer. Feel free to share your own ideas by commenting at My Family Magazine’s Facebook page. Happy holidays!

You don't have to go far to find a library, museum, gallery, aquarium, planetarium, university, playground, or club offering summer activities that include an element of maths or science. For example: l The University of Manchester Whitworth Art Gallery (www.whitworth.manchester.ac.uk/ whatson/families/freeevents); Colourful Sundays drop-in creative workshops constructing your own artwork using maths and art techniques; every Sunday, all year round, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm; for all ages; no need to book; free. l STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) events run all over the summer (www.stemnet.org.uk/events) e.g. the BG Group Earth & Marine Science Summer School (www.exscitec.com/courses) with lab-based, on-shore and off-shore activities in London and Southampton. l The Science Museum, London (www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitmuseum /galleries/mathematics.aspx); interactive displays, including the Mathematics gallery where you'll discover the maths behind gunnery, carpentry, mapping, MP3 players and more; for all ages; free entry to most of the museum. Brighten your kids' day along with their minds, whether they're staying home, heading to the park or seaside, or whiling away the time on planes, trains and automobiles: l Books: Free maths e-books about counting, shapes and time for ages 3-5 (www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ maths/fun-activities/3-5); any book of sudoku, futoshiki, or kakuro puzzles.

l Cards: Buy a pack of cards and teach your children aged 3+ to play snap, go fish, old maid, happy families, solitaire, rummy and more – see how at www.activityvillage.co.uk/card_games_for_ kids.htm, and try www.davidparlett.co.uk/ oricards for Dracula, Caterpillar and other maths-specific card games for ages c.7+. l Music & Movies: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/numbertime/song, three illustrated online songs about basic numeracy for ages 4+, free; some movies involving maths or science include Steamboy (PG/7+), The Nutty Professor (PG/7+), The Man in the White Suit (PG/9+), Contact (PG/9+), A Beautiful Mind (12+), Good Will Hunting and Pi (both 15+). l Offline games: a variety of board games, from Mathopoly to Sum Swamp, for ages 3 to adult are reviewed by parents at www.mathsinsider.com/math-boardgames; more advanced games for gifted or older kids include dice games, draughts/checkers, ludo (download and print this maths PDF worksheet version www.teachitmaths.co.uk/?resource=20684) backgammon, mahjong and chess. You can even teach your teenagers poker to practise game theory, statistics and probability – best use toothpicks or pennies as the stakes! l Online activities: As well as computer and tablet games, there are loads of apps for classic maths-related games, such as sudoku and Tetris, that don't require Internet access to play after download. Here are some other ideas to explore: www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/games Brainteaser fun for little ones (age 3+); free www.murderousmaths.co.uk: Amusing tricks and games, including the Missing Digit Trick and Age by Chocolate, teaching logic, algebra, fractions, etc.; for ages 8 to 12; play alone or with friends; free. www.shodor.org/interactivate/ activities: 100+ Java-based online maths and science activities for ages 8-18; free Tips: If you don't have access to an Internet-enabled computer or smartphone at home, try your local library. Keep your kids safe online. Guidance can be found at www.saferinternet.org.uk. Meet the Mathical Creatures Introducing Mathical Creatures, an enjoyable, mathematical card game for children aged 7 and above. The educational game uses the fun theme of myths and monsters to teach and reinforce key numeracy skills.

games for them to play. The games proved to be such a hit that Lesley decided to turn her ideas into a business and Mathstraks Games was born! Lesley trialed Mathstraks Games in schools and with friends’ children before releasing Mathical Creatures in April 2013. Initially available in a number of local shops, the game has proved to be such a success that it is now attracting the attention of national outlets.

Mathical Creatures is a great way to enable children to practise and improve their mental arithmetic and helps improve their maths confidence through play. What’s more, with the summer holidays just around the corner Mathical Creatures offers hours of fun gameplay for kids and a great way for parents to support their child’s learning outside the classroom.

“I have always enjoyed the creative side of my job and love developing activities and games for my classes; I am now really enjoying developing Mathstraks Games alongside teaching maths part time,” says Lesley. Further numeracy card games are currently in production and Lesley is hoping to have two new releases ready for this Autumn. The brainbox behind the game is mum and maths teacher from Derbyshire, Lesley Higgin. In order to help her own children with their maths, she designed some numeracy card

FROM BUMP TO BUSINESS

Balancing a business and a family over the summer holidays Having the flexibility to run a business around your family is great until the summer holidays come around. How exactly do you get work done when you have children around for six weeks? Even if the children are spending some time in holiday clubs or with grandparents, the chances are you’ll have less time than usual to work on your business. And you’ll burn out quickly if you try to run around with the kids all day then work long into the night. So here are some ideas for making the best of the time you do have: Get a schedule: Much of the stress comes from trying to cram too much into too little time, so grab a calendar and write in all the activities, day trips and holidays you have planned. Then you’ll have a schedule that you can work around. Play dates: Arranging play dates with another mum – whether she’s running a business or just wants some free time of her own – can free up a few hours of work time.

Quiet time: Children are often tired at the end of the school year and will want to spend a few mornings taking it easy in their pyjamas. They don’t need to be occupied with activities every single hour and a little TV is fine. Alternatively, you can plan some quiet activities ahead of time such as colouring or crafts that don’t need much adult input. Then you can make use of this time to get some work done, especially if the children know they’ll be doing something fun with you later in the day. Plan ahead: Look at the tasks that need to be done over the summer months and work out which can be done ahead of time. Many marketing tasks including blog posts and social media updates can be written and scheduled weeks ahead, for example. Try to get some of these tasks out of the way before the end of term. Apply the 80:20 rule: The 80:20 rule (also known as the Pareto Principle) says that we get 80% of our results from 20% of our actions and that we make 80% of our income from 20% of our clients or products. Use your drop in working hours to get really strict on where you spend your time. Dump those activities that aren’t delivering the goods and you’ll free up lots of time.

Helen Lindop Helen helps parents grow businesses around their young families. You can grab her free e-book Running a Business Around a Family: 9 Steps to Success’ at www.businessplusbaby.com/9steps

Automate: Look for places where technology can do the job for you. For example, an application like Buffer and Hootsuite can automate some of your social media updates and you can get accounts software that will speed up your bookkeeping and invoicing. Outsource: Can you pay someone else to do some of the work for you? Even paying a teenager a little cash to help out with packing could help. Go with the flow: There will be sick days, arguments and many other unexpected events that will need to be worked around. There will also be times when you just feel like dropping everything and taking the kids out for some fresh air. Don’t get too frustrated when things don’t go to plan, remember to enjoy the summer and make time to relax.
