t seems that all roads to country stardom, or at least a career in the country music business, lead to the Nashville music scene. Every year, thousands of young people make their way to Music City, USA to make it or break it. Springfield’s own country music singer and songwriter Brian Fuller is one of those young aspiring performers looking to break into the big time. Having uprooted himself from Georgia in order to make his dreams a reality, he is working hard in the famed capital of country music. Brian is busy writing original songs and performing music, paying his dues and learning his craft. He started out on a high note as a finalist in a nationwide music competition, the NASH Next Local Find 2018. Brian was the winner of the NASH Next regional competition, performing his original song “Buzzin’ Like You.” That win made him a finalist and one of the ten contestants flown to Nashville for the national NASH finale event where a panel of celebrity judges, including Big Machine Label Group’s Scott Borchetta and Brooks & Dunn’s Kix Brooks, judged the completion at the Wildhorse Saloon in October 2018. Although he didn’t take the top prize, being a finalist in the contest was terrific
Brian says he was able to plug into the music scene pretty easily thanks to friends he had made while coming to Nashville over the last couple of years. He says “I had a couple of friends take me out and show me around when I first got here, because it is important to network, to get out and meet people.” He says he has adapted well from small town life to the big city, “it’s not as bad as I thought it would be but I still look forward to being home in Georgia with my friends and family.” Singer Songwriter Industry insiders say that playing an instrument and learning the craft of songwriting are two major advantages when attempting to attain success in the music industry. Brian scores big on both points, and says he considers himself equally a singer and a songwriter. “I am ten minutes from downtown,
“I miss my family and friends, but all I have ever wanted to do since I was a kid was my music.”
exposure and a learning experience for him. “I had a great time being in NASH,” Brian says, “I made a lot of friends and I met people in the industry and made a lot of professional connections. It was a really positive experience.” Brian says he moved to Nashville three months ago in order to devote himself full time to his music career. He says, “I had been coming to Nashville as much as I could before I moved here, going back and forth, and couch surfing at friends'. And for weeks at a time, I was touring all over the southeast. Now that I have officially moved here I can write every day, perform when I can, and go out at night and network .I love it!” Getting out and networking is crucial to any newcomer as these are the people that can one day help you get a job, get a gig, or land a contract.
which is great because there is always something going on. I go to different Writers Rounds three or four times a week. At Writers Round, a songwriter sings their song and then the next sings a song and so on. They just go around the circle or down a row playing in turn. One of my main places is Whiskey Jam on Monday night. I am usually in the Demonbreun neighborhood at Live Oak or Tin Roof Revival, and midtown at Red Door and Losers and Winners. There are Writer Rounds all over town and they are completely packed.

“Most songwriters feel they have hit gold when a song they write connects with their audience. Being themselves and letting the music come from their heart brings an honest dimension to the craft.” Brian says when he is performing his own songs on stage, “It’s a whole different feeling. As an artist, when you’ve written the words and music, when you’ve wrote what you are singing, it is extremely gratifying.” “Buzzin’ Like You”, “Keeps Me Singing Along” and “Myself” are original songs of Brian’s (you can listen to them on his website) and he says he has more original tunes in the pipeline. Ultimately he says, “My goal right now is just writing as much as I can, working towards putting out new music for my fans and working towards a publishing contract and a record deal.” A record deal and a ‘pub’ contract mean two different things in the music industry. When you sign a publishing contract, the music publisher (or publishing company) works with you to secure commissions for your original work and promotes your existing compositions to recording artists, film and television. In addition, they are responsible for ensuring the songwriters and composers receive payment when their compositions are used commercially. That is different than a recording contract.
A recording contract is a legal agreement between a record label and a recording artist, where the artist makes a record for the label to sell and promote. Typically a new artist makes a demo and works very hard to create a fan base, gain momentum and make as many personal connections in the music business as possible in order to obtain a record deal.
The Lacs and Josh Sanders as well as performing at various restaurants in Richmond Hill, South Carolina and the Island Grill in Port Wentworth. Since then Brian has put together his own band and they have been touring throughout the south, playing dates from Michigan to south Georgia.
Georgia Boy The 21 year old Georgia native has been performing since he was twelve years old. The first time Brian ever sang in public was at a Memorial Day festival at Buckingham Plaza on Highway 30. He can still recall the three songs he sang that day- “My Kind of Crazy,” “In Color,” and “Don’t Think I Can’t Love You.” Making music has been an integral part of his life as long as he can remember. “I’ve been playing music since I was a little kid,” says Brian, “I got my first guitar when I was seven, and started on drums when I was probably four or five, and I picked up other instruments along the way. My uncle played in a band and I thought it was cool!” Brian continued singing professionally throughout his teen years. He performed at school talent shows, the Old Effingham Days Festival and the Effingham County Fair. He opened for Chuck Courtenay,
Bigger Picture Brian continues to tour with his band but on a smaller scale. “I toured a good bit but I’ve pulled back so I could write more at this time. The bigger picture for me is to continue writing a lot, one or two songs a week that I like. I could keep playing every weekend in a cover band but that’s not my long term goal.” Says Brian, “I am working on having a good catalog of original music, because I want to have a long career and I have learned in the music industry to play my cards right.” Having said that, Brian says he looks forward to releasing new music by the end of the year or the start of next year and getting back on the road with a new show and new original music. Being loyal to his fans and getting out there is very important to him, as he says, “My supporters are the best and I love performing for fans, new and old,

everywhere I can, especially with new music I hope they are going to love.” “I miss my family and friends, but all I have ever wanted to do since I was a kid was my music.” he says, “I strive to be the best person I can be, to learn as much as I can about this business, and to be as smart about it as I can. Country music is my inspiration and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” And neither would his supporters, which are growing in number from his loyal friends and family in small town Georgia to all his new friends and fans in the big city in Tennessee and beyond.

BRAXTON CALHOUN
Counting His Blessings For His Musical Career Story by Cindy Reid
Y
You may have caught country singer/songwriter Braxton Calhoun’s show at the Mars Theater recently, where he rocked the house and left it all onstage. But throwing a good party and giving a thousand percent to his audience is nothing new to this Springfield native, who says “It’s country but I play it like it’s rock and roll.” Braxton is country born and bred, you can hear it in his voice and in the songs he writes, from rousing bar anthems to deeply felt ballads. Braxton made his way to the home of country music some years ago. He says, “I started coming to Nashville when I was 19 or 20 years old. After high school I was going from job to job, because I wasn’t interested in school, and I was looking for a change and Nashville seemed like a good spot. By the time I was 21 I had locked down an apartment and became a Nashville resident.” Like almost every country singer that comes to Nashville, Braxton took paying jobs any which way he could. He says spent the first couple of years juggling both musical and construction gigs while getting his start. He says, “There were times when I’ve done electrical work to keep going. Back then I would play a show, pack up, drive all night back to Nashville and get dropped off at the job site. You got to the keep climbing the ranks, you got to cut your teeth down on Broadway and the road, and you just have to play a lot. But the past couple of years I’ve been blessed enough to make a living only playing music.” Not too many musicians can say that and it is a testimony to his talent and determination that has propelled Braxton to this point. Songwriting Original song writing is nothing new for Braxton. “I always considered myself a songwriter,” he says, “I stay busy on the road, playing dates here and there but song writing is my main goal. The touring supplements my income to pursue writing. I’m older, and I have been doing this, performing, for years and years. Right now I am fully transitioning to song writing.”
Braxton says, “I have plenty of good time party songs, but lately I have written deeper songs with more feeling. My new song "Worn Out" is a great example of that and probably the most open I’ve ever been. It’s a tune about anyone that ever struggled with addictions of any kind.” The chorus to “Worn Out” "Well I’m feeling worn out... but not worn in and I could lose a fight with the wind and all the bad mistakes, they show up in mind, late at night I’m awake in this grave, living with the shame ... and going day by day...” (copyrighted music and lyrics by Braxton Calhoun). He says, “I really enjoy writing a song and seeing it produced in a studio setting. To see a song I wrote go all the way, to a full track or a CD, that is exciting. I would say that’s probably where my true passion is.” Always writing, he says he particularly likes his new song, “Where the Corn Grows.” The chorus goes like this: "Where the Corn Grows Slow" Don’t you wanna go... down the road where the corn grows real slow. Don’t you wanna ride... take a drive... keep them kernels popping all night Can you feel the heat, 'neath your seat from this ole John Deere green.. don’t you wanna gooooooo where the corn grows slow..." (copyrighted music and lyrics by Braxton Calhoun) Showtime Touring means just that- being out there on the road and playing dates from one end of the country to the other. Braxton says he explored the world on the road with his band, especially in his mid twenties. ”At one point I was playing one hundred and fifty dates a year with just a Suburban and a U-Haul. This ain’t glamorous. It looks nice on Facebook and CMT, but there is an underbelly to touring all the time.” As most performers will tell you, touring is a blur of cheap food, cheap motels and bouncing from one city to the next. But he still likes to go out and put on a great show and says, “I love performing
and I joke that I am more of a game show host because I don’t just sing, I entertain the audience. I give them a show. Some musicians just play the songs but not me, I talk to you, the audience, and make a connection. I just did a private corporate event and I was jumping on tables, getting the audience worked up and giving everyone the best possible time. I give it all I got. You got to give it your all, especially in this town.” Thinking about the big name stars that have made it, Braxton says, “ It takes a lot to get to the top tier level, and for anyone who has reached it, you have to admire that.” He says, “Musicians come to this town everyday and you are but one small piece of the pie. Thousands of bands play all over the country every day. You need to think about what makes you special? What makes a venue invite you back?” He and his band just got back from playing Spring Break at the most famous beach bar in the country, the Flora-Bama Lounge, located in Orange Beach, Alabama and Perdido Key, Florida. He says, “We have played there several times a year for the past 6 years. I think I get invited back because of my professionalism, on top of giving a

great show!” You can catch Braxton and his band there this summer, June 13 &14, July 6 & 7, and July 23 & 24, playing shows nightly. Blessings “My wife Sarah, I can’t thank her enough” he says, “ I would have lost steam a long time ago without her.” Braxton says, “She has been right there for me and I think a lot of people wouldn’t understand the depth of the sacrifices she makes.” Sarah is a nurse at Vanderbilt Hospital in downtown Nashville. “She will get off work at Vanderbilt at night and then walk into to town to catch the end of my show. That’s my wife. She is another blessing. She is the best.” Springfield, Georgia is another sweet spot. It’s where he launched his career by singing at his high school graduation. Braxton says, “I love my hometown. Sarah loves it too and we have talked about the future. We will end up there one day, and I will be picking and grinning and having a fine time. But right now Nashville is home. We’ve lived and worked in every suburb so we know it inside and out. It is a great city and it’s a growing town.
Construction is booming, in fact there are seven new bars opening, and we just hosted the NFL draft!” In fact, last year Forbes' annual ranking of the nation's fastest-growing cities ranked Nashville at number 7, a big jump up from its slot at number 20 the year before. An oft quoted statistic attests that 100 people a day moved to the town last year, and that has only slowed up slightly to the figure of 82 a day as of April 2019. Life Today “I am doing fantastic! I have had a lot of ups and downs in my personal life and as a musician in this town but the Lord has blessed me. Braxton says there are people he looks up to, “I admire several people, one being Sean Rivers , who is President of "Nashville Talent Community" Label and helps book me as well as mentoring musicians like myself to help us reach

out goals in the music industry" . Braxton says, “He has been a big influence on me, my life and my career, Sean is a rock in my corner, through good and bad news he has encouraged me.“ Braxton continues, “And I am blessed to have the support of my beautiful wife and of my family and friends. When I played the Mars Theater in Springfield two weeks ago , all four of my sisters were wearing my tee shirts and sitting in the front row! I know I am a blessed man.”

Since its release in April of 2019, children and adults have fallen in love with the book and what it represents. Melissa has worked with children for most of her life. She started out as a nurse in Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care, and she later became a school nurse at Rincon Elementary. She then earned her Masters in Elementary Education and taught four years in Effingham County before returning to nursing. Though she didn’t begin creative writing until 2013, she quickly realized she enjoyed it. Since then, she has published three novels in addition to Jeremiah Justice, which is her first children’s picture book. Whether she was nursing, teaching or writing, Melissa’s love for children and the desire to make a positive impact on their lives continued to grow. The idea for a special needs superhero came when her years of pediatric nursing met her talent for writing. That is how Jeremiah Justice was born. “Special needs kids are underrepresented in children’s book publishing, and if you see special needs kids, they’re usually not the hero of the story,” Melissa says. And she plans to change that. As the mother of a special needs child herself, Melissa knows what it’s like for her child to be labeled as “different.” Her son is on the Autism spectrum, and she has witnessed first hand how hard it can be for children and their parents. What makes Jeremiah Justice so special is that the one thing that sets him apart-his tracheostomy– is his source of power, not a setback. “People see that plastic tube on the surface and immediately they think of it as a weakness, something that makes
the child vulnerable,” says Melissa. “So I wanted that to actually become the source of his power versus something that was a weakness or something that made him less than somehow.” In the beginning of the story, Jeremiah Justice starts to fall, but is saved by a surprising blast of air that comes from his tracheostomy tube. He deems it his “Super Tornado Blaster.” With that “PASHOWWW” from his tracheostomy, Jeremiah Justice ultimately uses his Super Tornado Blaster to save the town from supervillain, Mr. Menace. Once the story was written, Melissa wanted to share it with the world as soon as possible. She believed in the book, and so she decided to raise the money to publish it herself. Through a Kickstarter Campaign, she earned enough money to make her dream a reality. “It was a crowd sourcing, grassroots effort,” she says. “It took a village to make this book.” Now her supporters are reading the book they helped fund, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Crystal Napier and her son, Noah, were among the first to fall in love with the book. Like Jeremiah Justice, Noah has a tracheostomy, so he was excited to see a superhero with one, too. “Not only does this book give him a character that he can relate to,” Crystal says, “but it also gives his peers an opportunity to understand more
about what makes Noah unique. “For many children, differences make people ‘scary’ and it sometimes results in children--or even adults--avoiding him altogether,” Crystal adds. “This book takes a big step toward encouraging my son's progress and his friends' appreciation of him for the special gifts that he has to offer. My heartfelt appreciation goes to Melissa Miles and Rashad Doucet for this window to acceptance for my son and many other special people.” Rashad Doucet is the illustrator behind Jeremiah Justice, and his talent is well known in the lowcountry. Melissa first discovered him at the Savannah Children’s Book Festival but admits she had to ask him a few times before he had the time to illustrate the project. In the end, Doucet proved to be the perfect illustrator for the book. “I love his art. I love his style,” says Melissa. “He made it better than I had imagined, and he’s just an incredibly nice person and wonderful to work with, so it was a great choice.” But it wasn’t enough for Melissa just to write a book about a special needs superhero; she wanted to get it into the hands of children whom it would impact the most, so she created Superhero Success Foundation, Inc. It is a nonprofit dedicated to creating more characters with special needs and donating the books to children’s hospitals, schools and camps for special needs kids. Camp Trach Me Away is the first and only overnight summer camp in Georgia specifically for children with tracheostomies, and The Superhero Success Foundation will donate books to every child in attendance this summer. That is one of the best aspects of the book. All proceeds from book sales go to The Superhero Success Foundation. “The

reason we can donate all of the proceeds is that we raised the money up front to publish the book,” she explains. Melissa has donated a copy of the book to every K-8 school in Chatham County and to the Child Life Specialists at the children’s unit at Memorial Health University Medical Center. Local ENT, Dr. Michael Poole, has also been given copies for his pediatric patients with tracheostomies. Even before the book launched, Melissa has been promoting it and working tirelessly to assure the success of the nonprofit organization. Tax laws, publishing minutiae and live television interviews are admittedly not her element; and while it hasn’t been easy, it certainly has been worth it. She has participated in career day at Sandhill Elementary and Ebeneezer Elementary, and she and Rashad Doucet have also read the book at Daffin Park’s “Books and Blankets” event. She hopes to continue sharing the book at as many events as possible. Melissa is extremely pleased with how well the book has been received so far. “It’s been overwhelming how much positive support it’s gotten, not just from special needs moms, but just from anybody that understands there was a need in children’s book publishing,” she says. “They see this as filling a void that’s been there.” Kelli Davis is one of those people. She teaches special education at Springfield
Elementary, and her daughter, Emmory, has had a trach since she was seven months old. She has both physical and cognitive disabilities, and they often get stares from younger children who are curious. “Melissa’s book is the absolute perfect way to introduce differences in the classroom,” Davis says. “I love the fact that the superhero has a trach, so Emmory’s peers, or any child with a trach for that matter, can see a story book character that is like them.” She plans on including the book in her classroom next year when she talks to her students about her daughter. Melissa wants everyone to know how much it means to her to have such support from the community. From the fundraisers and donations to publicity and book sales, it couldn’t have happened without everyone rallying together for a worthy cause. Her goal is to continue to grow Superhero Success Foundation Inc. and to create more books with more special needs superheros. If the success of Jeremiah Justice is any indication, that goal could easily become a reality. No matter what Melissa does next, she will continue to motivate and inspire children through her writing. She sums it up best when she explains what it means to be a superhero. “I think that all of us have strengths,” she says. “We’re all unique and special. I think we’re all kind of superheros in our own way.”

GOSHEN TRAVELERS An Effingham County Praise Band

erthold Auerbach, a German poet and author, once said music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. For one Effingham County praise band, these words couldn’t add more meaning to what they are doing. By using their God-given talents, they spread joy, hope and healing to those who have the pleasure of hearing them. Five years ago, the praise team at Goshen United Methodist Church (UMC) in Rincon, Georgia, had an idea. The idea was to carry their tunes outside the walls of their church. In just a short time, Goshen Travelers has made a name for itself – being invited to play at places throughout the state. The band is made up of talented musicians. Jesse D. King plays acoustic guitar and vocals; his dad, Jesse C. King, plays acoustic guitar and vocals; Missy Dodd and her sister Stephanie Wiggins are on vocals; Jeff Braswell plays bass guitar and vocals; Robert Grant is the harmonica player; and Matthew Grant,
now a freshman at Clemson University, is the percussion of the group and plays the cajón. The gifted group brings together more than just harmony – they bring together their love of God. “Our first gig was a secular gig and we had to learn music from the 60s and 70s as well as rock and roll music,” said Jesse D. King. “It didn’t feel like us; it just wasn’t the pocket we wanted to be in. Now we play nothing but churches, festivals, retreats, and Christian music.” The band’s core values are modest – keep it fun, keep it authentic and keep it simple. “If it gets too complex and we don’t have time for it, we won’t enjoy it,” says Jesse. The band has a long list of songs it can play and music ranges from contemporary praise and worship, southern gospel, blues, bluegrass and classic hymns. Goshen Travelers certainly provides a unique music ministry. Bandmates Missy and her sister, Stephanie, have been singing in the church for 25 years. “Music means the
world to me and is everything to me,” says Missy. “We will go to these places and sing and people will tell us how much this particular song touched them or that it brought back a memory.” Missy says that they can really see the joy their music brings to people and her hope is that their songs will always bring that level of happiness to people. “We love to spread the Word,” she adds. Jesse also comes from a musical background. He started playing drums when he was nine and played at several different churches throughout middle and high school. When the pastor at Goshen UMC asked him to play in the band, he accepted the offer. Now he serves as the leader of the worship team. “We are using a God-given talent in a worthy way. It gives me energy,” says Jesse. “Every Sunday morning, I get to play and I get to play when we do gigs. This whole thing is pretty awesome. The band comes out energized and we always look forward to the next one.”

There is always something for someone, no matter which style you prefer. The band plays songs by contemporary Christian bands such as Casting Crowns, Third Day and Hillsong, but also songs from 100 years ago. They play hymns, adding a little of their own spice to them, as well as old rugged cross songs. Their variety is a blessing especially because of the diversity of the places they play. Goshen Travelers have been heard in church luncheons and dinners, at Old Effingham Days, and at the Effingham County Fair (which they’re playing again this year). Jesse says one of the coolest gigs they’ve played is at Epworth by the Sea on St. Simons Island, Georgia, during a women’s retreat. He laughs when he says the women tried to lock the doors to keep them in. They just recently played at a men’s retreat
The band’s core values are modest – keep it fun, keep it authentic, and keep it simple. at Epworth by the Sea. “People feed off our energy on stage. It brings energy to everyone. There’s something about music and how it soothes the soul and energizes you,” says Jesse. “It can change your mood very easily. Hearing something positive can only bring joy to your face.” Goshen Travelers has also released its first CD. Last May, just before the release, the band played a concert at the Mars Theatre in Springfield, Georgia. They nearly sold out the 220-seat venue with only a three-week lead time. The band recalls how different the setting was, but how fun it was. Jesse smiles when he mentions how awesome the sound system at the theatre was. One thing to note is band members don’t do this for money – they do it to spread the gospel. They don’t charge a playing fee instead they ask for a love donation. All the money goes back into the band to buy equipment and to help cover travel costs. They typically give everyone they play for a copy of the band’s CD. Missy jokes and says they don’t play for money, but they will play for food.
Not only is Goshen Travelers spreading joy with the healing powers of its musical harmony, bandmates are also teaching younger generations in the church to have how they can use their talents for the church and ministry,” says Jesse. When asked if Goshen Travelers ever plans to write its own songs, Jessie says they would like to, but time makes all the difference. “We want to write, but trying to sit down and write is kind of tough.” Jesse has a full-time job with the Army

Corps of Engineers and the other members work or go to school. Regardless of whether or not their songwriting dreams come to fruition, it makes no difference in the lives of those they are touching every time they take the stage. “Our church has a slogan and it’s to love God, love others, and serve both,” says Missy. “All of us love music so much and we will go out and serve by sharing our love of music. This is our way of sharing God’s love with everyone.” Even if it’s one song at a time.

Jonathan Bowerman An Overnight Author

onathan Bowerman didn’t grow with a burning desire to pen a novel. Instead, his ambition was to become a firefighter, which he is living out that dream. Little did he know, that one day life would lead him on another adventure. Jonathan is now a self-published author, working on his third novel and earning the backing of supportive fans from all over. An Overnight Author Jonathan’s first novel was based off a spur of the moment event. His oldest daughter, Natalia (13) was looking for a sock and started making up this world where elves take over and take all of your stuff. His youngest daughter, Isabella (12), joined in on the idea and both girls started drawing about this secret elf world. “They came up with all these fun corky ideas,” says Jonathan. “I started looking at their drawings and thought it could be something.” Seven months later, Jonathan was holding his first published book in the series, “The Secret Realms of the Hidden Elves – The Beginning.” “It was a surreal feeling, being an author. After I finished writing it, I had tears of joy. When I had my fingers on book one, I felt an overwhelming feeling of achievement,”says Jonathan. The second book in the series is out and Jonathan is about 75 percent finished with book three. He says a fourth one is on the horizon. Jonathan’s books are high fantasy for young readers and he assures his books are clean, fun fantasy. “I like to provide a way for kids to escape reality, but would never compose something for young readers that is not clean. In fact, my books have scripturebased morals entwined in them.” He adds that he wants children to be able to learn something from his books, which is why he sneaks morals in between the lines. Jonathan says if you like magic, adventure, fun and suspense, you would like his books. He leaves a cliff hanger at the end of every chapter and believes he knows what kids like to read. Support is the Backbone of His Success Jonathan is blessed with the support of his family and friends. He says 100 percent of his inspiration comes from his daughters, his fuel and ability come from God, and the much-needed encouragement
“I want people to connect with me. I love talking about my books and reading. I’ll make time for anyone who wants to talk to me.”
and constructive criticism comes from his wife, Colleen. Being a self-published author means you don’t get the fancy perks that come with having the backing of a big publisher. He relies on his wife, other authors and the online computer program, Grammarly, to help with the editing part of writing a novel. His fans are another reason he writes every moment he can. All of his reviews are supportive and about 70 percent are from the parents of young readers. “I couldn’t
ask for better fans, they truly keep me writing. I’ve spent a lot of time in the elementary schools and festivals, and to get to “nerd it out” with fans is awesome. There is no better feeling than writing something and having people like it,” smiles Jonathan. Jonathan is thankful that his oldest daughter is a bookworm and his other daughter is on her way to becoming one. “It’s awesome to see kids who are passionate about reading, especially

fantasy. It’s disheartening at times to see adults and kids buried in phones and iPads. It makes me wonder what’s next,” says Jonathan. He says he is willing to do whatever it takes to motivate and inspire kids to read, which is why he is so dedicated to his work. He says if he can get one child to read, then he’s done his work. “It makes every hour in front of my computer and every strike of my keyboard worth it.” Finding Time to Do it All It’s easy to see that Jonathan has a sincere passion for his work. It’s not just about writing, it’s about inspiring children to find a love of reading. Aside from being a dedicated author, he’s also dedicated to serving his community. Growing up, he looked up to his mother, father and stepfather who were all firefighters. Jonathan grew up in Deland, Florida, and right after high school, he enlisted
in the Army. He was stationed at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska, and served as a firefighter. His high school sweetheart followed him there and after serving his time, he got out of the army and moved to Effingham County. He is currently a firefighter at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia. Jonathan, his wife, two daughters and son Lucas (5), live just outside of Guyton. “We love where we live and we don’t plan on leaving for a long time,” says Jonathan. And he doesn’t plan on stopping putting pen to paper either. Jonathan has plans for at least two more series to include a teenage mystery series and a young adult fantasy science fiction series. He laughs but is serious when he says there isn’t enough time in his life to fulfill all the ambitions he has. His ambitions are not only to inspire readers but also other writers. His writing journey has encouraged his mother to write her first novel, which is a high
fantasy book, too. He says he’s fortunate for his job because of his schedule. It allows him to write on his off days and when it’s quiet at the fire department. “My favorite part about writing is about the fans that I make through it. There is no better feeling than providing a service and meeting someone who adores it,” says Jonathan. He says he is having so much fun on this adventure and his goal is to visit all elementary schools in Effingham County by next school year. “I feel like I can be an inspiration to children if I have contact with them. If children can meet the author of a book they like, it makes reading that much more fun for them.”
If you’re interested in his latest series you can find Jonathan’s books on Amazon: “The Secret Realms of the Hidden Elves: The Beginning” and “The Secret Realms of the Hidden Elves: A Journey Remembered” You can also visit his website www.hiddenelves.com or follow him on Facebook, just search for The Hidden Elves Book Series.

ear often seems to have no natural boundaries, but neither does hope. Some individuals have faced the most awful fear imaginable: the uncertainty of a loved one’s safety and whereabouts. In such terrifying times, efficient and effective resources are a crucial need. Established in April of 1999 as a “search and rescue initiative” of the Chesapeake, Virginia Sheriff’s Office, Project Lifesaver International (PLI) was conceived to help eliminate as much of that fear as possible; the organization was founded by Gene Saunders, CEO. The purpose of PLI is to “provide timely response to save lives and reduce potential injury for adults and children who wander due to cognitive disorders,” including “Alzheimer’s, autism, Down Syndrome, dementia and other cognitive conditions.” PLI is a 501(c)3 organization that is currently in “48 states, six Canadian provinces and Australia.” Hence, law enforcement organizations across the globe are partnering with PLI because they understand, first-hand, the necessity of the program and its tremendous benefits. The technology behind Project Lifesaver is impressive. Personalized wristbands, or transmitters (receivers), are placed on
a wrist or ankle of an at-risk individual. Each transmitter has a unique frequency number that is registered in a local PLI agency database. The transmitter “emits an individualized tracking signal” that pinpoints the individual’s last location up to a five-mile radius; search efforts begin at that location. The small wristbands are “personalized radio transmitters or GPS locators.” In the event that an enrolled client wanders off, a “caregiver is able to notify their local Project Lifesaver agency.” An emergency team is immediately dispatched to the individual’s area by tracking their signal. Due to the accuracy and overall effectiveness of the technology, most wandering individuals are located within about 30 minutes. This recovery time is absolutely phenomenal and takes “95% less time” than non-PLI search and recovery efforts. Obviously, as time is truly dire in such situations, every moment counts. In addition, massive amounts of resources are saved, including man hours, equipment and funds. The service is currently only $350 to begin and $200 annually thereafter (to cover supplies), which is well worth the benefit. Under the leadership of Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Department began its partnership with Project Lifesaver about ten years ago. Actually, as a new Effingham resident at the time, Pauline Shaw was the local trailblazer for the initiative, as she had moved from Chatham County whose Sheriff’s Department partners with PLI. Pauline was very familiar with the program, especially since she had registered her autistic child in Chatham. Pauline promoted the PLI initiative locally, organized various fundraisers and spread knowledge of the program throughout the area.
Corporal Kathy Dillard is currently the local PLI Search Specialist and has been the local PLI Certified Coordinator for five years. Originally from Elberton, Georgia, Kathy has been with the Effingham County Sheriff’s Department since January 2004; she began her career as a jail officer. After over five years of noteworthy service, Kathy attended the Police Academy where she graduated and became a patrol officer and, later, a humane enforcement officer. Presently, Kathy’s primary professional
role is that of transport officer for the department. She really enjoys her career and all of the dynamics that encompass it. “It’s hard to get bored doing this every day; it’s always a challenge,” Kathy stated. Kathy wholeheartedly believes in the value of PLI and has witnessed its benefits on various occasions.

She is immensely thankful for the appreciation of the local PLI members. She has been able to establish good relationships with many of them over the years, including Stephen Johnson; as an individual with both autism and Down Syndrome, Stephen has been a member since April 2013. Kathy is proud of the support that individuals have given the program over the years; however, she understands that so much more is necessary, as PLI is funded solely by donations. “It takes the whole community to fund this program; the community wants to help,” she said. Effingham’s Project Lifesaver program has been promoted on WTOC, Mid-Morning Live, in local newspapers and has a Facebook Page. Local-area schools are even getting involved. Kathy is excited about incorporating school-wide donation contests in order to support the cause. The school with the most donations receives a trophy and even dress-down days for its students. “It’s just a phenomenal fundraiser. I’m very excited about it,” she said. Kathy has dedicated an enormous amount of time and effort over the years towards the cause. Fortunately, she has recently been privileged to receive the assistance of Officer Frances Thompson who is currently working on her professional PLI certification. Frances has been very helpful and is already quite passionate about the cause. “We want to make sure everyone is safe. It’s another way that we as law enforcement can ensure more safety and security to the community. We’re here to
do good and to keep our community uplifted. We’re another hand to help you. We’re hoping that more people will get involved so that it will be a large network. I think it’s a wonderful thing,” Frances remarked. The Sheriff’s Department incorporated the Are You Okay (“RU OK”) Program a few years ago, as it was spearheaded by the Sheriff himself. Founded by Bruce Johnson of Northland Innovation Corporation, the program is a “call check-in service for friends and family of senior citizens” who are concerned about their elderly loved ones who live alone. There is no cost for the service, and it is in several states across the globe. Users must have RU OK Software installed on their computer. Each day at a preestablished time, the system’s computer “automatically makes a check-in call to the senior through an automated phone calling system.” If there is no answer, the computer will try 30 minutes later; if there is still no answer, it will try again after 15 additional minutes have passed. If still unsuccessful, an alert is issued on the computer screen and audibly through its speakers; a printout containing emergency information is produced. A deputy is then dispatched immediately to check on the loved one. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Department has recently implemented a new initiative within the RU OK Program which allows parents to use the service to check on their children who might temporarily be home alone. Whether checking on kids who are at home alone over the summer break, or

even during the school year, parents are able to have that much needed peace of mind. Both Kathy and Frances see the tremendous value of the RU OK Program. “Look at us as an extended caregiver; know that there’s someone else that can help you, and you’re not in this alone,” Frances said. Moving forward, Kathy would like to see more awareness spread concerning the programs, and she is diligently striving to make that happen.

Ameris Bank Invests in Future of Local Healthcare with $25,000 Georgia Heart Donation to Effingham Health System
Ameris Bank’s local leadership team presents a $25,000 Georgia HEART donation check to Effingham Health System.
A
meris Bank has donated $25,000 in financial support for Effingham Health System through the Georgia HEART Hospital Program. Representatives from Rincon’s Ameris Bank office presented a check to Fran Baker-Witt, CEO of Effingham Health System. “This significant donation demonstrates Ameris Bank’s awareness of our community’s healthcare needs and the Bank’s commitment to support the people they serve,” comments Mrs. Baker-Witt. “We appreciate and applaud Ameris Bank’s leadership. Their contribution will help fund hospital facility enhancements and new medical technologies. Both of which will help us in our journey to transform healthcare for this community.” On behalf of local Ameris Bank’s local leadership, Jamie Deloach, Commercial Lender and Vice President for Ameris Bank’s Rincon branch explains, “With our headquarters based in Moultrie, Georgia,
we understand how important hospitals are to communities like Effingham County. This is an excellent way for us to support Effingham Health System and help them to grow availability of quality healthcare for our community.” Jeannie Lane, Rincon Branch Manager; Greg Marini, Savannah Market President; and Tori Rhett-Johnson, long time Personal Banker with the local branch, were among those joining Mr. Deloach for the check presentation. As part of the Georgia HEART Hospital Program, Ameris Bank gave $1.65 million in financial support to 16 rural hospitals located within the bank’s footprint in Georgia. “As a community bank grounded in service and character, we consider it a great honor to be able to make these contributions to support families across rural Georgia,” said Ameris Bank CEO Dennis J. Zember Jr., in a written statement. “We are neighbors in these communities, and we are committed to doing our part to help bring them
financial peace of mind and advance access to quality healthcare.” Mrs. Baker-Witt expands on the impact of this donation saying, “Ameris Bank’s generosity is setting the bar for how local businesses and individual taxpayers can support the advancement of healthcare for residents of Effingham and surrounding communities—through Georgia HEART and the Georgia Rural Hospital Tax Credit Program it represents—or through our new Effingham Health System Foundation. The Georgia Rural Hospital Tax Credit (State Bill 258) enables Georgia businesses and taxpayers to redirect their Georgia income tax liability to help support these qualified hospitals. Participation in the Georgia HEART program is limited to Georgia rural hospitals that meet qualification criteria established by law. Pizza Chef: Extraordinary Eats in Guyton Story by Katrice Williams • Photos by Sheila Scott
P
izza Chef has been a familiar part of the Guyton community since 2002. Anton and Jessica Trifonov joined the team around that time and are currently the owners of the restaurant after purchasing it in 2005. Both Anton and Jessica have a valuable amount of restaurant management experience under their belt, much obtained prior to acquiring Pizza Chef. Anton is a native of Bulgaria, where he was in the restaurant business for many years. Jessica actually started restaurant
up on our 17th anniversary. We’re very proud of that; a lot of businesses don’t make it that long,” Jessica said. All products are made fresh and from scratch on a daily basis, including each drop of pizza sauce that tops each pizza. “We try to be as authentic as possible; we strive to give the best food possible,” Jessica stated. That said, each customer gets the privilege of enjoying a made-to-order dish each time they visit. The owners also pride themselves on incorporating a very
management at age 16. The couple has two beautiful daughters: Rianna, 11, and Bianka, 9, who both have had a real fascination with the business for some time now. Jessica jokes about Rianna’s attentiveness to detail when she visits the establishment and is proud to assist in any way possible, even to the point of letting her dad know exactly “how to do” things. Pizza Chef’s reputation precedes itself and is known throughout the community and surrounding counties. “We definitely live on our reputation; our name is widespread. We’re coming
welcoming, friendly and down-home type of atmosphere for their customers. “There is more of a personal touch…a small, home-town feel,” Jessica added. The menu varieties are delectable and filling, which include a host of specialty pizzas, all topped just the way each customer wants, barbecue (chopped pork and ribs), garden and chef salads, plain and specialty calzones, raviolis, garlic bread and cheese bread, meatballs, wings (hot, barbeque, teriyaki, honey mustard, lemon pepper, garlic Parmesan and plain), corndogs and various hot/cold sandwiches (ham & cheese, meatball,
BLT, barbeque, honey mustard chicken, Parmesan chicken, and bacon-ranchcheddar). Meat entrees may be combined with sides for “plate” options, as side dishes may include: green beans, baked beans, cole slaw, homemade potato salad, cornon-the-cobblet, Brunswick Stew or chips. All can be washed down with a cold soft drink, iced-tea or lemonade. If customers desire a sweet treat to finish off their meal, a sweet chef roll, cheesecake and cheesecake rolls or fresh baked cookies are sure to do the job. Jessica mentioned some of their dishes, specifically their cheesecake roll, which is relatively new. It is a “little Stromboli with cheesecake in the middle.” It has become a fan favorite and “has been selling like crazy.” Jessica feels that the calzones and salads are some of their most popular dishes. “We’re known for our calzones. I’m very specific about how they’re made… not too small and not too sloppy. We’re known for salads, too; we sell a lot. They’re jam-packed full and look great,” she said. As tasty as the dishes are at Pizza Chef, both Anton and Jessica take enormous pride in the fact that nothing on the menu is fried, so the food is not only good but healthier as well. The restaurant has undergone several renovations over the past years. The couple was delighted that their space doubled when they acquired the location next door. The decision was made after deciding to add a dine-in area to the restaurant for customer convenience, as the venue had originally been takeout and delivery. In addition, a game room was added this year for customer enjoyment; it has been a real hit with the kids. Whether having fun playing the oldie but goodie classics Ms. Pac-Man and Area 51, or even having a relaxing game of pool, customers can have more

than just a great dining experience. “We’re proud of our new game room. We’ve been wanting to do that for many years,” Jessica commented. Anton and Jessica have even more in mind for their business. They want to continue expanding in order to add an outdoor patio on the back of the building. They are also looking forward to getting a food truck. Jessica knows that it will be a wonderful benefit to customers— those enjoying social events and various outings. “We’re always trying to do something more,” Jessica said. Anton and Jessica Trifonov truly desire for their business to continue to be a huge success. The couple refuses to sacrifice quality and are committed to continue to provide their customers with great food and service; they will not settle for anything less.
