Elizabeth Hursey:

Effingham’s “Keeper of Records”

E

story by katrice williams photos by natalie turner

lizabeth Hursey is surely no stranger to the local court system. With a noteworthy career as Clerk of Court since 1985, after fulfilling the role when Ms. Louise Newkirk retired. Elizabeth is in her eigth term. Elizabeth, a proud Effingham native, is married to Mr. Fulton Hursey, her husband of almost 38 years. The couple has one son, Marcus, an Army National Guard Pilot who Elizabeth speaks of with a great amount of pride. Marcus and his wife, Tiffany, have three little ones of their own—Wyatt, Wilson and Ella Grace, who affectionately refers to Elizabeth and her husband Fulton as Me-Me and Big Dad. “We love ‘em to death,” Elizabeth says. It might be fitting to say that the “system” is in Elizabeth’s blood. Her dad and mom, Virgil and Vivian Zoller, both worked in the court system. Elizabeth’s dad was a court bailiff in the historic courthouse for most of his career and later became the first small claims judge in Effingham County; he served in the judicial system for almost 25 years. Vivian served as the lady of the bailiff for a while. The office of the clerk is definitely one grounded in history, as it stems back to 1786. Elizabeth explains that it is one of four offices set by statute, along with the office of the sheriff, tax commissioner and probate judge. Effingham is actually a part of the first judicial circuit. She is 1 of 159 clerks in the state. Presently, most of the positions of clerk are held by women. Elizabeth mentions, “It’s usually a man’s job, but statewide, it’s mostly ladies, but there are good men too in the association.” All in all, there have been tremendous changes within the entire system since Elizabeth first began as the deputy clerk alongside Ms. Newkirk. “It was just she and I—a clerk and a deputy clerk and one judge, so it has materialized through the years,” she states. Currently, there are three superior court judges, one state

court judge and several employees in the circuit. Elizabeth speaks fondly of her position, which entails a lot of administrative work. Aside from courtroom responsibilities, she explains that the clerk is the “keeper of the record” charged with the integrity of public records and funds. As clerk, Elizabeth handles “anything that comes into the superior, state and juvenile court.” This may include corresponding with various agencies like the Crime Information System. She also handles business requiring certified copies of records, subpoenas, notary appointments, child support cases, issues with divorce, traffic citations, juvenile cases and a host of other things. The clerk’s role is vital to the courts daily activities and overall success and is very difficult to quantify. “I like to say anything that you’d ever go to court for, we do,” Elizabeth confirms. This includes most all matters with the exception of those in probate court. Elizabeth has a great deal of passion for what she does. Above all, she enjoys the court environment. “I do like the court atmosphere,” Elizabeth says. That is very obvious when looking around her office. There are numerous paintings and drawings of the new and historic courthouses on her walls created by individuals who knew about her fondness of them. In addition, Elizabeth points out the record room that she calls one of her “favorite rooms” around, understandably so since she is keeper of records. She jokes and says, “I love court houses and my Volkswagen.” It’s always a great benefit when an individual really likes what they do—and Elizabeth loves what she does and appreciates the team around her that helps her accomplish necessary goals. “I love it. I’m either here, at the courthouse or doing something at church. I have a good staff; they’re all diligent—know what they’re doing,” Elizabeth remarks. Actually,

“All our judges have been inspirational to me; I love all our judges. I’ve worked under six superior court judges and now two state court judges. They’re good people. I’ve learned something from all of them. We see the real-person side; they’re just people like I am. But, you get to know them one-on-one and their side of what we do.”

Elizabeth feels that they are one of her biggest inspirations. She is grateful for their work ethic and the commitment. “We all get along very well, and I’m thankful for that. We all work well together,” she proclaims. Elizabeth is also motivated by helping people, and happily embraces it as her duty. “I am a public servant—don’t want to lose sight of that. We’re here to help, and I have a specific job to do,” she notes. Elizabeth understands that people are the very foundation of her job. She adds, “I think you give it, and it will be returned to you.” Elizabeth remembers a call that she recently received from a woman whose son had gone to court in 2007. At the time, Elizabeth made valiant efforts to assist the woman, who was worried and concerned about her son. Over the years, the woman had never forgotten Elizabeth’s kindness. The woman, who is not a local resident, took noteworthy measures to contact Elizabeth, to extend her gratitude after all these years. Elizabeth says, “It makes you feel good—that you made an impression on someone.” Elizabeth talks about some of her biggest mentors. She quickly mentions her mom and dad whose footsteps she closely followed. Elizabeth also expresses a lot of respect and admiration for all of the judges that she has been privileged to work with over the years. “All our judges have been inspirational to me; I love all our judges. I’ve worked under six superior court judges and now two state court judges. They’re good people. I’ve learned something from all of them. We see the real-person side; they’re just people like I am. But, you get to know them one-on-one and their side of what we do,” she states. Elizabeth speaks with a heartfelt amount of admiration and appreciation for her husband Fulton, who she feels has been a phenomenal husband to her and father to their son. He has been there to selfllessly support her and her career endeavors over the years. Interestingly enough, Elizabeth was nominated for District Clerk of the Year in 2001, 2005 and 2008. She also earned the title of being a Certified Clerk of Court by the Carl Vincent Institute of Continuing Education. She is both appreciative and proud of such great honors, especially considering the number of state clerks. Those around her know that it speaks volumes. Elizabeth still finds time for something in her life that means a great deal to her—her church home. She has been a member of Holy Trinity for nearly all of her life. “I was baptized Lutheran, married a Lutheran, confirmed Lutheran and still a Lutheran. It’s a family church. I’ve never been anywhere else. I love my church; I really do, and I love to support it,” she says. Elizabeth has been a member of the choir for about 26 years; she was even in a part of the junior choir growing up. “It’s a small choir, but it’s family. I don’t know what we’d do without family; I lean on it,” Elizabeth comments. In her spare time, Elizabeth likes to spend time in her yard appreciating the beautiful world around her. “I enjoy being outdoors. I love flowers; I love amaryllis,” she says. Elizabeth has devoted a great deal of her life working alongside others who understand the importance of striving to maintain justice and lawfulness in the community—a community that she takes a great amount of pride in. For a long time, Elizabeth has felt it necessary to go above and beyond the call of duty. She continues to embrace the dynamics of her career –one that has long been characterized by hard work, commitment and an undeniable passion for the call.

Lynnette Bragg and the Cavaliers

F

amous American author Dean Koontz just about sums up the essence of a dog, “Petting, scratching, and cuddling a dog could be as soothing to the mind and heart as deep meditation and almost as good for the soul as prayer.” Growing up surrounded in the canine world of Foxhounds and Dog Shows, the love for the furry four-legged creatures became second nature. Meet long time Effingham County resident Lynnette Bragg and her pack of splendid Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Lynnette did not discover her passion or her need for this breed until her world as she knew it, tumbled upside down and out of control. It was in the midst of the untimely death of her youngest son, Matthew, that she realized her life had an emptiness. She traveled frequently with her job and knew she needed a traveling companion that may help with her grieving process plus keep her from being alone. “After losing a child, it’s very hard to go on some days,” Lynnette shared. “I had planned to get a lab and discussed this with my Dad; he is the one that told me I needed a Cavalier,” she continued. Her Dad had explained that they are the “big dog in the little dog package.” So, blindly she dove into the unknown of the breed and acquired a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. “When you look into their eyes, they look back into yours,” she lovingly expressed. The first love was Sir Tobias, also known as Tobi. The five year old pooch is a Ruby Cavalier, which describes his coat color of rich mahogany. Their relationship and connection was instantaneous from the beginning and he still accompanies her everywhere. The loss of her son was not the only loss she had experienced, since the death of her young son, she has undergone much bereavement including the passing of her oldest son, Scott, her Mother, and a little over two years ago, her Father. “I just

keep getting more Cavaliers,” she painfully remembers. After Tobi, her pack consists of six more Cavaliers at home and three that are fostered with loving families. Lynnette’s husband, Randy, was never a fan of having dogs, but Tobi changed his opinion quickly. By Christmas of Tobi’s first year, Lynnette’s father bought Randy a solid Black and Tan Cavalier by the name of Lady Guinevere. She has been Randy’s

shadow from day one! Toby and Guinevere were then bred, and Lynnette and Randy kept out Lady Katie Scarlett, who is a solid ruby, just like her Dad. The next Cavalier to be added was a Tri-Color who has the greatest personality, Lady Dixie Mae! She gives the best

16 April/May 2016 | www.Effingham Magazine.Com

Cavalier Hugs of the group! One of the big Cavalier traits is to put their front legs and paws on either side of your neck, lay their face on your face and press in and love you for dear life! This is Dixie Mae. Cavaliers come in four colors, so the collection was complete with the addition of Tudorose Rembrandt, a Blenheim, lovingly known as Remi. He has an absolutely gorgeous head and huge round eyes. There is Coco Chanel, referred to as the Princess Coco Chanel (We use the double name most of the time). She is a little over three years old and believes she is truly a princess. “She has to have everything perfect,” Lynnette giggles, “everything must be just so for her.” Coco Chanel is a Blenheim Cavalier, which describes the color of her vibrant silky coat-chestnut red and snow white. Ms. Chanel delivered 2 male puppies and 2 female puppies recently: RanLyn’s Chance de Chanel, RanLyn’s Allure de Chanel, RanLyn’s Cristalle de Chanel, and RanLyn’s Bleu de Chanel. The newest addition is Gordon Gekko- RanLyn’s Woof of Wallstreet. The spunky black and tan pup is the life of the party. Great expectations are in place for this very promising young lad! Lynnette’s Dad, Homer, suggested that they should attend one of the prestigious dog shows with Tobi and Guinever. Sir Tobias cleaned up at the competition, going Winner’s Dog at his first AKC show. He went on to complete his AKC Grand Championship. Rembrandt received his AKC Grand Championship at the age of 17 months. And as for Ms. Coco Chanel, well, she holds a few titles. The Princess, Silver Grand Champion, Huntland Coco Chanel completed this past year as the overall third best female AKC Cavalier in the nation, winning Awards of Merit at both the Cavalier Nationals and the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club in New York under the expert and professional handling of Dennis Brown and his lovely wife, Katey Thompson-Brown.

Lynnette and Randy have lovingly donated over a dozen of their prestigious Cavaliers to families who have children with Autism, Down’s Syndrome and other Developmental Disabilities, Leukemia and adults who have or have undergone treatment for Cancer or other chronic illnesses, and who are elderly. Showing dogs isn’t as simple as it may sound. Lynnette and Homer hit some bumps in the road and definitely experienced the learning curve. Once the kinks were worked out, they were able to bring home the ribbons. RanLyn Cavaliers (Lynnette and Randy) exclusively use Dennis Brown and Katey Thompson-Brown as Professional Handlers. Cavaliers are an old Scottish breed that dates back as early as the 1500’s. It wasn’t until the 1600’s that King Charles II discovered his infatuation with the canines making them an aristocratic companion. “These dogs are bred by royalty to be a lap dog for royalty,” Lynnette explains. The sweet temperament and disposition of this

beautiful dog allows their reputation to precede them. Performing for shows and giving their unconditional love at home is not the only purpose for her Cavaliers. Lynnette is the owner and President of B&B Care Services, Inc. B&B was the brainchild of her youngest son, Matthew, and was started in the mid 1990’s after raising her first son, Scott, because of seizure disorders, autism, mental retardation and osteoporosis with multiple bone fractures. The idea of this agency was directly from her younger son Matthew who loved his older brother unconditionally and shared this special love for his big brother with everyone he came in contact with. “Matthew saw this as a vehicle to help other families,” she said proudly. “Because I was a huge advocate for Scott, I was fortunate enough to be appointed to the Governor’s Council of Developmental Disabilities in 1992. I served until 2004 with many years being the councilman for the state,” she explained. B&B’s goal is to connect people and families to resources to

enable them to live in the community. “We work with probably 225-250 people with autism or developmental disabilities ranging in age from three on up. We do family support and respite care.” Respite care is planned or emergency care provided to a child or adult with special needs in order to provide temporary relief to families who are caring for a child or an adult. This provides temporary relief to those who are caring for family members. “The goal is to allow people with these disabilities to stay in their home and be able to go into the community and enjoy what other members of the community experience. We are able to provide almost any service the family could need. When they say ‘well if I only had this’, we try do provide that need. Horseback riding is a popular request, it helps out with their neuromuscular disorder and plus their self-esteem. We work with another program called Money Follows The Person, which is a Medicaid funded program. It helps people in a nursing home actually move out when www.Effingham

Two of the dogs Lynnette and Randy have donated.

At the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show ready. A plan is developed for that individual and this program will assist with security deposits, furniture and even first grocery orders. B&B is currently working with approximately 200 plus people that are in transition now, averaging five people that actually move out per month. B&B continues providing case management services for those individuals who move out of the nursing facilities for up to one year. Usually working with an average of 60 of

these individuals. On any given day, B&B is working with around 500 individuals and their families who are in need of supports to remain in the community. Her pack of Cavaliers team up with B&B Care Services and Lynnette takes her pups with her to nursing homes and feels like it’s a great ice breaker, to meetings, and to the schools in the county. The love of these animals to everyone is purely remarkable. They have been proven to mend a broken

heart and comfort the ill; those grieving and those battling many different types of cancer enjoy the visits with them. With so much loss endured in her lifetime, Lynnette Bragg has not let life control her, she has taken control of her life. She has taken the simple relationship between a girl and her dog and given people experiencing their darkest hour hope of a better day.

Brenda Helmly:

Rincon Garden Club

I

story by jeff whitten

t seems the founding mothers of the Rincon Garden Cub weren’t much on record keeping or rules. After all, few documents survive to tell of us the club’s early years. And they only had one requirement for those who wanted to join their ranks, according to current president Brenda Helmly, herself a master gardener who at 73 is the youngest of the Rincon Garden Club’s 15 members. “It was founded in 1941 by nine ladies here in Rincon that loved flowers,” Helmly said. “That was the only stipulation for membership we knew of that had been written down somewhere, that they loved flowers.” For posterity’s sake, let it be known the Rincon Garden Club’s founding members were Mrs. J.C. Cato, Mrs. Verdie Gnann, Mrs. C.N. Helmly, Mrs. R.G. Helmly, Mrs. V.F. Kessler, Mrs. W.R. Matthews, Mrs. Emma Simmons and Mrs. B.J. Waldhour; all women who had the good sense to know that loving flowers is the most important attribute a garden club member can have. And, also for posterity’s sake, let it be known now that Brenda Helmly was born the year after those charter members started the Rincon Garden Club, and that Helmly was fascinated and in love with flowers from the time she was a little girl and met a neighbor, Annie Oglesby, whose house was always alive with blooms. “I was 5 years old and remember her fixing flower arrangements,” Helmly said. “She always had an arrangement on her dining room table, she was always doing something with flowers. That’s how much she loved them.” Oglesby, who is now 91 and still relied upon by the Rincon Garden Club for her expertise in matters pertaining to gardens, served as the club’s president herself for a spell, beginning in 1959. She’s Helmly’s lifelong gardening mentor and inspiration, all rolled into one. “I knew when I got my own place it was going to be like Annie’s,” Helmly said. “I was going to have flowers everywhere.”

Her first place was on Williams Street, where Helmly and her husband Robert started life together, a life that saw them raise three kids who in turn gave them seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her first stab at gardening didn’t go so well, however. “I was determined to plant some flowers,” Helmly said. “I’m sitting on the ground planting these bulbs and my husband walked by me and laughed. He said, ‘you do know you’re planting those upside down, don’t you?’” Her husband never let her forget it, she said. He passed away a few years ago after 51 years of marraige, leaving a big hole in her life and a big back yard on Long Street with all the flowers you could want for Helmly to tend. Even after a hard spring rain wreaks havoc with the azalea blooms, it’s still a beautiful garden, a mix of flowers and trees and camellias and roses and vines. Helmly’s husband had his spot to garden and grew vegetables, she had hers and grew ornamentals. That’s how they relaxed, apart but together. These days, Helmly is also involved with the senior church group at Rincon United Methodist, the Happy Hearts, and she helps deliver meals on wheels to seniors. But she still relaxes in her garden. Weeding and raking isn’t work. It’s peace. “When other people talk about traveling and seeing new places, I would just as soon walk out my back door and work in my garden,” Helmly said. “It’s what I like to do. I’d rather be out there than inside.” Seeking new members Sometimes the Rincon Garden Club meets at the Vernon C. Hinely Community Center on Highway 21, sometimes one of the club’s members will host the assemblies, which begin at 1 p.m. and last about 90 minutes.

Helmly said the club is looking for new members, and it seems a bargain if you love flowers and have the time to spend. Dues are only $25 a person annually, and that goes to help fund not only the Rincon Garden Club’s annual work but also the Georgia Garden Club’s projects, such as road beautification and its botanical garden. The Rincon Garden Club helped spruce up Rincon City Hall a few years back, suggested the plantings there - and they’ve also helped beautify the Rincon Library. They’re also getting involved in a show at the Jepson Museum this spring with an arrangement based on a piece of artwork hanging there. The painting is by a German painter named Raphael Lewisohn. It’s called Pasturage of the Dunes. Its’ full of lavendars and blues and yellows, and “sometimes I wonder if we’ve bitten off more than we can chew,” Helmly said, kidding. Flowers are a labor of love. She spent 25 years working at the library with her good friend Libby Heidt, then retired in 2005 and straightaway signed up for the University of Georgia Extension Office’s highly respected master gardener course. Helmly passed, of course, but will still tell you 10-10-10 is her favorite fertlizer for everything. And if tulips, camellias and the clematis vine are her favor-

ites plants, there’s still a Lady Banks rose climbing high in her back yard, its thornless canes thick with delicate yellow flowers, and you can’t turn around without spotting another species of plant over here or there. It seems no flower is unwelcome in this garden. “There’s not a flower or shrub that I won’t try,” Helmly said. “I don’t know how anybody can look at a garden and not see God’s handiwork. To me, if anybody doesn’t believe there’s a God, just look at a flower.” As for advice to those who think they might want to give gardening a try, Helmly’s advice is succinct. Soil matters more than anything, and don’t start something unless you’re prepared to finish it. “Don’t be afraid to try something. But just remember, if you plant it, it’s probably going to need some care,” she said, noting those who are hesitant to plant something in the ground might want to consider using containers instead. And there’s one more piece of advice for neophyte gardeners in the area. “Join the garden club,” Helmly said. “You don’t even have to live in Rincon. All you have to do is love flowers.”

RAHN Versus NEIDLINGER A Race To The Market in 1912 story and photos by jeff whitten

T

he past occasionally comes alive in unexpected ways. For Maxine Rahn Wendelken and Max Neidlinger, it happened when Wendelken opened a notebook and saw a photocopied page of what looks like a portion of an old Springfield Herald broadsheet, though truth is no one’s sure whether it’s an old Herald or a compilation of clippings from various newspapers. In any case, the stories on the photocopy are from 1911 and 1912. There are also legal ads, including an announcement seeking bids to put toilets in the “Court House and Jail at Springfield, Ga.” But the story we’re concerned with is from Aug. 19, 1912, and bears a Savnnah Morning News tagline. It runs in a single column beneath headlines that read “Effingham Farmers’ Road Race to Market. Rahn Beat Neidlinger. Got First Bale to Springfield Fifteen Minutes Ahead.” The Rahn in the story is Maxine’s grandfather. She never met him. The Neidlinger in the story is Max’s grandfather, whom he never met either. Until Maxine found the clipping. She isn’t sure how she got it, but when she saw it she had to call Max. Both are now in their 70s, but they’ve been friends since before they went to elementary school together - both grew up in Springfield Methodist Church during a time when church was where the community gathered.

26 April/May 2016 | www.Effingham Magazine.Com

1912 was a slower time, a less crowded time. But perhaps no less a competitive time. From the story: “The first bale of new cotton grown in Effingham County was ginned here this morning. The bale weighed 445 pounds, graded good middling and was bought by the Hinesly McCartney Company, the largest cotton buying firm of Effingham, paying Savannah quotations of 12 1/2 cents per pound. The cotton was grown by G.Q. Rahn, one of the county’s most successful and progressive farmers. “In connection with this first bale Mr. Rahn secured the honors by the narrow margin of only 15 minutes, as Farmer U.J. Neidlinger pushed him a close second.” Perhaps only in 1912 could 15 minutes be considered a narrow margin, one thinks, but read on. The victory was due to Rahn’s “swift team,” the story continued, noting both men lived about four miles from Springfield - although in different directions - and that the competition was widely anticipated and watched. “Those Rahns had the best of everything,” Max said he told Maxine, when she read him the story over the phone. “Your granddaddy probably had a big old wagon with big wheels and a big old beautiful horse pulling it. My granddaddy probably had a short-legged donkey pulling a sled with no wheels

on it. If he’d had wagon wheels on it he’d have probably gotten there quicker, too.” Maxine responded: “Careful, you’re talking about your grandmother now,” reminding Max that his grandmother Niedlinger’s maiden name was Rahn. During a recent meeting of old friends who attended school together, Maxine presented Max with $3, the difference in the price of the bales of cotton. “He should’ve been giving me the difference,” she said, when the two met at the Old Jail Museum to explain all of this to Effingham Magazine. But let’s get back to the story: “The sidewalks on both sides of Laurel Street, the main thoroughfare, were crowded and as Mr. Rahn passed in a cloud of dust the cheers that rent the air would have made a stranger think that a Woodrow Wilson or J.F. Gray rally was on.” Woodrow Wilson was elected president in 1912 and went on to serve two terms. J.F. Gray is less well known, but a little research showed he was apparently from Savannah and a railroad commission member who also helped head up formation of the first Georgia Chamber of Commerce. But that’s more just background for a story that delighted Maxine when she read it for the first time.

“I was so shocked when I saw it, because I didn’t realize I had it,” she said. “And when I read it, I about went into hysterics and could only think about my good buddy Max.” Well, that’s not the only thing. “To think those were our granddaddies, coming down the main street in Springfield and people standing on the sides, cheering them on as they came down the street in a cloud of dust,” she said. “I thought about that movie ‘Spartacus’ when they had the chariot race with the drivers bumping each other with the carts ...’” History is mostly about people. Family history is about family people. “My dad was only 3 years old when this happened,” Maxine said. “My daddy was 12,” Max answered. “Isn’t that something. This brings them to life a little. Brings their history back to us, it’s like their time is more real somehow.” History. Two men in wagons, bringing cotton to the market through Effingham County more than 100 years ago, both aiming to be first, and grandchildren they never knew now taking delight in a clipping of the event not far from where that cotton market was all those years ago. It’s as real as real can be.

Martha Hall For Superior

I

am honored to have the opportunity to seek the open position on the Superior Court bench for the Ogeechee Circuit (comprised of Effingham, Bulloch, Screven and Jenkins counties). I know the bar has been set very high by the retiring judge, John R. “Robbie Turner. Judge Turner is the kind of judge I would hope to be, fair, balanced and dedicated to finding the right result. As a child of a career Navy man and a devoted homemaker, I along with my five brothers and sisters had a meager beginning but lacked nothing. My father was and is my hero. I was raised in a blended family, but to see us together, one would never know that to be the case. My parents loved us unconditionally and as a result, my childhood was exceptional. From a young age, I visited Sylvania and the surrounding counties on holidays and during the summer. After high school I went to Georgia Southern University. While I had to work to pay my way through college, I had a wonderful college experience. Hard work never hurt anyone as my dad used to say. My time at GSU was phenomenal and I was able to gain skills needed for my career as a lawyer and a business owner. As a college student I fell in love with the community and unified support it provided to GSU. I treasure the memories of football championships and the role model Erk Russell provided. I graduated from Georgia Southern University in 1991 with the courage to reach for my dreams. I attended the University of Memphis Law School knowing I would come home to South Georgia very soon. After graduating law school in 1994, I was sworn in immediately as an Assistant District Attorney for the Ogeechee Circuit. There I prosecuted felony crimes, managed the Child Support Recovery Unit and handled juvenile court in all the counties of the circuit, including Effingham. I had the pleasure of working with the clerks of court, probation officers, judges, law enforcement agencies, and school officials in this county. I was impressed with the dedication of these individuals and with the community as a whole. When I entered private practice in 2000, it became my goal to have an office in Effingham County. In 2005, my office was opened in Springfield and I have been fortunate to assist local clients with their legal needs since then. The vast majority of the Superior Court caseload is comprised of felony criminal offenses, divorce, child custody and child support matters. In order to be a good jurist, like Judge Turner, you need experience in all those areas. My practice has been concentrated in criminal defense work and domestic relations matters. Because I have been both a prosecutor and a seasoned private practitioner, I have the ability to bring a balanced prospective to each and every case. I represented the mothers and fathers in divorce. I have witnessed firsthand our United States Constitution come to life in my experience in handling death penalty cases. Again, I have prosecuted murder cases and I have defended some. I know each position comes with challenges and I pledge to use my experience to seek justice, follow the law, keep our community safe yet approach each case with humility and mercy. I also believe that as a woman, I bring needed diversity to the

30 April/May 2016 | www.Effingham Magazine.Com

bench. Our circuit has not had a female judge since 2000 when Faye Sanders Martin retired. I have devoted my legal career to the protection of children. Whether it is insulating a child from the conflict of divorce, protecting them from an abuser or intervening with a wayward child in hopes of changing their path, I want to make a difference in the life of any child. I strongly believe every child needs good parents who are willing to look beyond themselves and focus on the best interest of their child. I obtained my parent coordinator certification to help parents learn to communicate. I am a trained mediator so I will have the skills to perhaps limit the conflict for the families that come through Superior Court as a result of a divorce or child custody matter. My simple pledge to the citizens of Effingham County is twofold. I will work hard and I will listen. No matter what kind of

dispute comes before the court, I will listen attentively to both sides. I will use my wide range of legal experience to view each case impartially and to eagerly seek a result that is fair and just. As a business owner in this community, I want to keep our homes, businesses and families safe at all times. I do believe in consequences for those who violate the law, but I will look to the family of each offender to see what they are willing to do to prevent their loved one from engaging in future criminal behavior. I am humbled by the support I have received during this campaign. I am ready to serve and I believe I can best use my God given gifts in the position of Superior Court Judge. I encourage voters to inquire about me with court personnel, members of law enforcement and former clients. I would like to thank each and every citizen who has trusted me to assist them

Daniel, Ricker Serve Rincon story by jeff whitten

F

ew things are as important in our day to day lives as good local government. City councils, county commissions, planning and zoning boards, all are part of the glue that holds a community together and makes sure it’s safe and healthy. That’s why it’s important to have people willing to devote their time and energy to serving the community through local government. It’s also important that residents know those in office and why they sought office, why they serve. With that in mind, please meet two women who stepped up to the plate in Rincon, council members Ann Daniel and Christy Shores Ricker.

ANN DANIEL Effingham Magazine: First, please tell us a little about yourself. Daniel: I retired from Healthcare field after 25 years. Started first at Candler where I created and implemented the first senior based hospital program for seniors, now known as Smart Senior. Then moved to Memorial and created GenerationOne, the second senior program in Savannah. While at Memorial, I was fortunate enough to be director of five departments and was able to work closely with patients and their families to make their hospital experience as positive as it could be. I am blessed to have two daughters who live in Atlanta with their husbands and my three beautiful, smart and talented grandchildren. This means I get to travel to Atlanta often. When not traveling and being with family I spend much of my time in my yard. I love flowers and shrubs of all kinds and have about 3,000 flowering bulbs in my yard that bloom at different times of the year. EM: Why did you seek office? Daniel: My husband and I moved from Wilmington Island to Rincon in 1999. He grew up on the island and I grew up in a rural area on the Westside of Savannah. We always liked the feel of small town living and planned to move to a small town when we retired. Although we had not planned to move until after retirement, our cousin said the house next to them was for sale and we should come look. That was all it took to speed up our plans and move. Once settled in, I wanted to know more about the town and its residents so I started attending

32 April/May 2016 | www.Effingham Magazine.Com

the city council meetings twice a month. I was very interested in the local government and was offered a position on the Zoning Board. After serving my term on the Zoning Board, I decided to run for city council and served two years before I had to resign due to illness. Thankfully, today I am healthy, have retired and sadly lost my beloved husband after 43 years of a happy, loving and glorious marriage. But I am still here, still love Rincon, my church family and friends who have been with me throughout my journey and I plan to live out my life here. EM: Why did you decide to run a second time? Daniel: When Scott Morgan announced he was resigning because he was moving out of the city, I saw this as an opportunity to complete my term and was excited to be a part of all the changes and growth Rincon is experiencing. I really liked the work we, as a council, did before and wanted to get back in. Being on the council is like having a full time job if you put your all into it and I now felt I had the time and energy to commit to this position and decided to run and am thankful to the residents for putting me back in office. EM: What do you hope to accomplish while on Rincon city council? Daniel: Like everyone else, I am excited about the growth we are experiencing and the endless possibilities ahead and I want to be a part of the leadership that is making this happen. I like working with the people in our community and though I do not have all the answers and cannot fix all the problems, I will do my best to make decisions based on the best possible outcomes for Rincon and its residents. I do not have a list of things I want to accomplish during my term because it is not about me. It is about what I can do for Rincon and our citizens.

CHRISTINA “CHRISTI” SHORES RICKER EM: Please tell us a little about yourself: Ricker: I guess you could say that I returned to Rincon, since technically my parents were residents when I was born. We only lived here for six months after my birth. I grew up in nearby Richmond Hill and my parents owned grocery stores. At one point in time, we owned the only

grocery store in our town. You could say we knew almost everyone. This unique upbringing gave me a strong work ethic and the opportunity to meet and communicate with people of all ages and backgrounds. I am married to Brian Ricker and we have two beautiful teenage girls in high school. Brian and I met in 1994, I started Armstrong State College (now AASU) in 1995 and attended there full time my senior year. I graduated from Richmond Hill High in 1996, and stayed at Armstrong taking core classes. I purchased my first home at the age of 18 in Rincon. I married a few months later, took a job at Re/max Accent and started building our second home at the age of 19. I attended online real estate school and passed. Then, I decided to change my college major to business administration, which I pursued at South College. At age 20, I had our first daughter Alexis and I opened a children’s clothing and furniture boutique in Richmond Hill called, “Little Angels.” I owned and operated this store for nine years and during that time our second daughter, Alaina was born. In 2004, we purchased a home to renovate in Rincon and still reside here. In 2007, we began the process of opening our current service business, Clean Duct LLC. In 2008, we simultaneously closed our children’s boutique while opening Clean Duct LLC. EM: Why did you seek office? Ricker: I grew up Southern Baptist and helping others has always been a passion of mine. We started attending and joined Rincon First Baptist Church back in 2004. We joined an amazing Sunday school class and they are the ones, to thank for my current position on city council. Four years ago,

a good friend and member of my class, made the statement that I would be good on city council. I didn’t think much of the comment at the time, but my Sunday school teacher Mrs. Joy Spence did. Having served in several capacities in our class and our church, she was confident that I would do well as a representative for our city. She asked me to pray about it. So I spoke with our pastor and asked him to pray too. For eight months my family, my class, and some of my church, prayed about this decision. I started attending council meetings and budget workshops to get a good feel for the task at hand. The first budget workshop, everything kind of fell into place. I found my place in the group. EM: What do you hope to accomplish while on Rincon city council? Ricker: I love to learn and research is my talent. I can utilize technology to help us find more information to make better informed decisions. I am driven to help us do our best to help our citizens continue to love where they live. I want to know that we have done everything in our power to keep our families safe, our finances secure and our city flourishing. I am currently enrolled in our Rincon Citizens police academy learning all the aspects that our officers face on a daily basis. I have taken more government classes in my first year on council than most people do in four years. I am currently serving as our Mayor Pro Tem and am honored that my co-council voted me into this position. I think that serving on city council is a huge undertaking if done right and I am working diligently to do this job to the best of my ability.

The Mathnasium of Pooler staff is passionate about helping kids gain stronger math skills through our year-round and summer-only programs, and to get ready for college. Aileen compares coming to the learning center like going to a gym. But instead of pumping up their muscles, her young clients are intent on beefing up their brains — by honing their skills in mathematics and acquiring what Aileen calls “number sense.” The Mathnasium franchise, located between Publix and Seasons of Japan on Pooler Parkway, serves kindergarten through 12th-graders in an after-school setting conducive to making math understandable and enjoyable. “Children don’t hate math,” said Aileen, a native of Scotland who holds an Honors Degree in Mathematics for Business Analysis from Glasgow College, “They hate being confused by math. Once they start understanding it, they love it.” In the process of promoting that understanding, Aileen starts by doing an assessment of a student’s abilities in math and determining any gaps in the student’s mathematical development. Based on that, a learning plan is designed, and prescriptive work is assigned. Mathnasium of Pooler takes pride in the attention they give their students, allowing individual instruction in a small-group setting with one teacher to no more than four students. The instructor explains math concepts, and the students respond by completing worksheets and playing math-related games. “We use lots of games,” said Aileen, “and the worksheets are fun.” The instruction is aimed, she said, at “inspiring a love for math and numbers” with the goal of making the students “problem solvers” and “building confidence” in their mathematical abilities. The Mathnasium Method isn’t a radical approach to learning; it’s intended, she said, to supplement what students are experiencing in the classroom and is “totally in line with the private and public school curriculum.” Just like “going to a gym,” students attend Mathnasium at their own convenience. “You pay a set fee once a month and you have access to 3 hours of instruction per week. Sessions are drop-in, no appointments are necessary.” she says “so you can fit us in around your other activities”. With hours from 2:30 to 7:00 pm Monday through Thursday, 10:00 to 2:00 pm on Saturdays and 12:00 to 3:00 on Sundays, Mathnasium makes it easy for their students to make time for their learning. “We encourage them to come three times a week for an hour or twice a week for 90 minutes.” adds Aileen. Their specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting. This unique approach enables them to effectively explain math concepts well and lend a helping hand to every student. Their tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn. Mathnasium of Pooler also provides help to students preparing to take standardized tests such as SAT and ACT. Mathnasium instructors use a unique assessment process to

determine exactly what each child knows and what they need to learn. Next, they design a customized learning plan for teaching the concepts the student needs to master. Next, the instructors check progress along the way to make sure kids truly understand and retain the concepts they have been taught. The results are amazing. Kids will see measurable changes in attitude, confidence and school progress. The instructors will also set aside time to provide homework help. They will help kids understand their homework assignments so they feel better prepared to complete the work at school. The Mathnasium program provides the foundation and support for students to succeed at each stage. Elementary school students build their math foundation, mastering computation and problem solving with whole and rational numbers, and understanding number sense. Mathnasium even makes learning times tables fun. Students in middle school continue to build strong math foundation, mastering “the how and why” (algebra readiness), helping with homework, and filling in gaps needed for advanced classes. And the high School students fill in their foundational gaps, addressing different levels of knowledge from Algebra through Calculus, helping with test preparation and assisting with homework. Mathnasium of Pooler’s goal is to enhance your child’s math skills, understanding of math concepts and overall school performance. At the same time, they build confidence and help families see measurable progress. Their program provides consistency and flexibility. Mathnasium of Pooler also offers summer programs, private tutoring and free consultation. They are currently accepting enrollment applications for their summer programs. Mathnasium’s fun summer programs are all about preventing summer learning loss and helping students prepare for what lies ahead. For some, that may mean a solid review of previous material, while others will benefit from previewing upcoming concepts. Most students will get some of both. Summer programs allow you to set your own flexible schedule. You will use 15 to 24 hours anytime that suits you. Drop in on whatever days you choose. You can spread your visits throughout the summer of use them all in two weeks. This flexibility allows you to keep your summer vacation times open for family trips. We work around you. Aileen researched education franchises for over two years and realized the Mathnasium method matched her own way of teaching perfectly. She is excited to bring Mathnasium to Pooler, and to partner with the local schools to build strong math students by “making math make sense”. Mathnasium of Pooler serves students from Pooler, Rincon, Guyton, Port Wentworth, Bloomingdale and surrounding areas. For more information on Mathnasium of Pooler and a schedule of fees, contact Aileen Clarkson at (912) 330-0666 or email her at pooler@mathnasium.com. Their website is www.mathnasium. com. Wiley’s Home Center story by cindy burbage

iley’s Home Center has become a household name in Effingham and surrounding counties, over the last twenty

nine years. In April 1987, Wiley and Rosalyn Thomas opened their doors and welcomed the people of Effingham County and nearby communities to shop for their home goods, which included appliances, furniture, flooring and décor. Family has always been an important part of Wiley; he welcomed to his business, his daughter, Detra Thomas in 1988. The more than 35,000 square foot merchandise floor offers something for everyone and their style of home furnishings. Every piece in their emporium has been hand-picked, much of which is American made. Wiley’s puts pride in their stock, and therefore only the upmost quality and reliable name brand items are available. Such brands include: Whirpool, Hot Point, GE, Frigidaire, Serta, Legacy Classic Furniture, Vaughan Bassett and Flexsteel, to name a few. Shopping is made easy at Wiley’ Home Center. The seasoned employees, some with over 15 years’ experience, make purchasing your home necessities and desires a snap! Throughout the show floor are room scenarios set up for easy browsing as how your new room could be set up in your home. Anything seen can be taken home immediately or special ordered, also with delivery available on the same day of purchase, enjoying your new furnishings is instant. With an easy 12-months same as cash financing, along with other financ-

ing options, getting your new furniture is effortless. Here is what a few of Wiley’s customers have to say: “Great customer service, they treat you like a friend. They will go out of their way to find what you want-they can even order the perfect piece and have it delivered. Also, they have great repair techs, and they are always at your house on time and get the fix done quickly.” -Wendy Wildes “I do all my home furnishing shopping at Wiley’s. I don’t even price at other places because I know that I will always get quality products at the best price and I can always count on their quick and friendly service.” - Susan Brant “I have enjoyed purchasing home furnishings from Wiley’s Home Center for many of the twenty-five years that I have lived here. The atmosphere and the staff are always welcoming. It’s always an adventure walking into the store and searching for the next item that will make my house a home.” - Barbara Sanders “Just a note to let you folks know how much we appreciate your service response, not only right now but over the course of the years we have been dealing with you. We have always found your prices to be competitive and when you didn’t have our item you have been very helpful in finding it. But, more than that, it is the service after the sale which has been rendered promptly and at a reason-

able cost. These are the reasons we will continue to shop with you.” - Carleen and Bill Fillingim “I shop at Wiley’s Home Center because I am treated like I am the most important customer. The staff continues to give quality customer service and is willing to assist you in whatever way necessary. The kindness and concern expressed by all makes you want to return.” - Stacey Weston Shopping is not the only service offered. Wiley’s also has The Appliance Doctor, aka, Jimmy Wilson. He has been their serviceman for 26 years and specializes in GE, Whirlpool, Maytag, Kithchen Aid and most major appliance name-brands. Dr. Jimmy also services appliances that have not been purchased at Wiley’s, just an extra way to help their customers. In 2008 and 2009, they were awarded the “Best Furniture Store in the County.” Residents have come to know Wiley’s as a staple in their community over the last few decades. With reasonable prices and always a great customer experience, Effingham County knows they can count on this hometown store. At Wiley’s Home Center, they understand the need of great customer service and the need of trust with loyalty. Whether it is a new customer or a repeat one, everyone is treated like family. Providing service beyond the sale and warranty, Wiley’s Home Center is based on Wiley Thomas’ badge that he valued all his life- integrity, honesty and pure customer satisfaction.

Platinum Properties: Raising the Bar in Real Estate Services

T

story by katrice williams

oni Hardigree is the broker and owner of Platinum Properties. She began her real estate career 10 years ago. The California native has been in Effingham for over 16 years. She is married to Greg Hardigree, who is the owner of Gregory Custom Homes. The two make for quite a fitting couple in the industry, as they have a valuable amount of insight to offer. Toni is grateful for the growth that her company has seen over the past few years. “As the real estate market grows, I know that our company will grow along with its portfolio and clients. Platinum Properties is a one-stop-shop; we can list your home for rent or for sale. We can represent you as a buyer or seller. We do it all here,” Toni declares. She anticipates a promising future for her company as they strive to focus on what matters most—their customers. “Customer service is key. It always goes back to excellent customer service in all areas, from the rental side to our buyers and to our sellers. We try to incorporate service with a smile,” she says. The Platinum Properties Team takes pride in satisfying the needs of everyone who contacts them for real estate assistance, including those wanting to start out with rental properties. Toni comments, “Some other local real estate agencies refer rentals to us, because they don’t list/manage rental properties. We know that a tenant can potentially become a buyer—and we help our tenants become buyers. With the market getting better, we’re helping those owners who couldn’t sell because of a down market to watch the market and be able to list and sell their homes now.” Toni definitely wants customers to feel comfortable and at home with their services. Kelli Sibilio-Dye, an Effingham native, is Platinum’s property manager. Kelli started her real estate career in 2009 and has been the property manager at Platinum for about four years. Kelli remarks, “I’m probably more of a fan of the property management side. It keeps me going.” Kelli is quick to reiterate Toni’s words concerning their great customer service, saying, “That’s our #1 tool that goes out and grabs people…opens their eyes. I think we have top-notch customer service,” she states. “You’re dealing with people and their home and their family.

That’s a huge investment. They want someone that actually cares, and I know we all do. We do care about the people that walk in the front door, and we do want to help them,” Kelli adds. Additionally, Kelli is really excited when she knows that she has truly helped a customer to enhance their livelihood. “It’s just kind of a warm, fuzzy feeling you get,” Kelli insists. Kelli is inspired by the team she works with knowing that their strong work ethic makes all the difference. She mentions, “We have to work as a team. One person cannot do it all.” Michelle Tebeau Edwards is also from Effingham and is a realtor for Platinum Properties. She has been on the team since 2013 after starting out as the office manager. The GSU graduate holds a degree in Early Childhood Education and was a teacher for 11 years. She is proud of the Platinum Team and knows that each of them play a vital role in the company’s success. She remarks, “We have our own little niches as to what we handle, so that helps us work together better as a team. That’s what helps us grow and prosper as a company. I’m excited about where we’re going. I really feel we have a solid team and I’ve seen a lot of great things happen within the company.” Concerning their customers, Michelle says, “We want them to feel like we are really there for them—they’re not just another person. We’re going to work for them. We’re going to do what’s in their best interest. When they walk out of here, we want them to feel like they’re satisfied, and they came to the right place. Understanding their needs and what they want makes a huge difference.” Trisha Gibbons is new to Platinum Properties after filling the role of administrative assistant in October. Trisha, a New York native, knows that there is a great deal that sets Platinum Properties apart in their industry, especially their quality team. Mentioning Toni, Trisha comments, “She makes you feel comfortable and at home, and that’s what I feel when I come here. We get our work done, and we all love what we do. We come here smiling and ready to work.” Trisha is excited about what she has learned and has the potential to learn from the talented ladies. “I would like to learn as much as I can,” she states. Everyone at Platinum Properties is striving to raise the bar in their industry. With a diligent team so committed to helping their customers achieve their goals, success seems to be inevitable. BADCOCK FURNITURE STORE

B

Badcock: Where Customers and Quality Count

adcock is definitely a well-known name in the home furnishings market. Since its inception in 1904, it has strived to provide quality furniture for its customers. Jeremy Nease, a Port Wentworth native, has been the sole owner of Rincon’s Badcock Store for over 4 ½ years. He, along with his team, is committed to upholding the company’s reputation for excellence by striving to incorporate the highest standards within their daily operations, including excellent customer service practices. “Our goal is to have 100% customer satisfaction. It’s what we strive for, and every year, we improve. That’s what it’s about—improving every year,” Jeremy states. Moreover, Jeremy and his team pride themselves in being kind and honest to customers, while understanding the importance of giving customers the best information possible for them to make an informed decision. After all, many purchases can require big decision-making and an even bigger investment. Jeremy comments, “You can ask any of our customers—we’re honest; we really tell the truth. They come back, and we don’t hide anything.” Jeremy expresses a great amount of gratitude for his entire team; he is thankful for their diligence, strong work-ethic and high level of commitment. He feels that they help the day-to-day operations “go smoothly.” “It’s all about the team. I’ve been very blessed with a very strong, dedicated team. That’s why we’ve been so successful,” he remarks. Badcock is very pleased to now offer a No Credit Refused Program, so those with challenged credit will not be hindered

from purchasing the merchandise that they desire; they won’t have to endure the disappointment that credit rejection often causes. This program benefits a wide range of customers. In fact, the program helps individuals rebuild a better level of creditworthiness. However, Jeremy explains that the 6 and 12 month interest-free program is still available to customers who qualify. Jeremy is also thankful for all the community support the store has received over the past few years, and it means a lot that customers still continue to come back. He knows that his customer base is a big reason for the store’s growth and success. It is actually ranked in the top 30 out of a total of 355 stores across the Southeast. Even more, it has been ranked #3 corporate-wide in the flooring division over the past year. In fact, Badcock now carries American-Made Mohawk Flooring. “Every year, we’ve gotten better and better,” Jeremy states. The store offers a diverse product line, which includes all household furniture, bedding, electronics, appliances and lawn equipment. Jeremy explains that all furniture has a one-year warranty; additionally, he feels that they offer nearly the best appliance warranty around. Likewise, receiving two trucks of inventory weekly makes for fast and reliable product delivery for customers; the team wants customers to receive their orders as soon as possible. Jeremy looks forward to great things for Badcock in the future—the company as a whole and his individual franchise. “Our goal is to improve every year—stay in the positives and get better and better,” he asserts.

Need Home Renovations?

W

hat’s In A Name? In the case of HalleluYAH Restoration, check the company’s mission statement, which reads: “We try to grow daily as spiritual people, doing honest work in a managed businesslike manner. This enhances our ability to execute a service deeply rooted in family values. We want to give you the renovation that will bring one phrase to mind - ‘HALLELUYAH.’” That’s what’s in HalleluYAH Restoration’s name. Everything. What is HalleluYAH Restoration? It’ s locally owned and family operated by owners Marc and Kristina Pack, who’ve been in the exterior restoration business since 2005. They do everything from windows and doors to fencing and decks, and from siding and gutters to additions and porches, and though they’re based in Effingham County, they do renovations from Beaufort County, S.C. to Bulloch County, Ga. They use the finest materials, like Trex decking and Simonton Windows. They also offer financing. With both a Facebook page and an easy to navigate website, getting a quote is as easy as going on line and asking for someone to come out and take a look at the job. And HalleluYAH Restorations gives back to such worthy causes as recreation sports and Habitat for Humanity. That’s why, when the company opens up its 3,500-square foot showroom at 2667 Highway 80 in Bloomingdale on Saturday, May 14, a good portion of the proceeds from various raffles will be donated to

help others. “It’s really important to our company to give back to our community,” said Marc Pack. “We’re here to provide more than a service. We strive to be professional, to do the best work possible and to give back.” But don’t just take Marc’s word for it. Online reviewers also give HalleluYAH Restorations high marks. This 5-star review was posted on Facebook by a Statesboro man: “HalleluYAH Restoration installed a double french door in our home. They were prompt, courteous and finished their work with excellence. They earned my highest commendation. They are good people. The entire crew was respectful, responsive and left everything in perfect condition.” Here’s another 5-star shout out to HalleluYAH Restoration from a school teacher in Screven County: “The terrific team from HalleluYAH Restoration out of Guyton just finished my privacy fence. Lowes sent them out here. They were hard working, very professional, and well mannered. My fence is perfect!! Thank you!” There’s more where those came from, and additional 5-star ratings on other sites as well. So Google HalleluYAH Restorations and see what satisified customers are saying. software automation. Brewer encourages customers that are in the market to buy a home or property to obtain a survey before purchasing. He states that he receives many requests to survey a piece of property after it has been purchased. In many cases the buyer did not get what they thought they were buying. Also, if you are building, renovating, or planning a project, many times a survey is required for designs and permits. Brewer Land Surveying is proud to specialize in Flood Elevation Certificates. Craig works closely with homeowners and flood insurance providers to help identify things that can be done to lower premiums. Customers may be surprised to know that simply adding vents to a crawlspace or garage can lower premiums by hundreds of dollars per year. Craig is passionate about his work and helping others protect their homes and property. He is personally involved in every part of each project from start to finish. “Customers can trust me to do my best to help them with whatever their surveying needs are. The service I provide will exceed their expectations every time,” he says with pride.

THE COTTAGE CUSTOM PICTURE FRAMING

here is no better way to brighten up your home’s interior then to add an original piece of art and beautiful custom framing that you can treasure for years. Did you know that when you frame a special piece of art or memorabilia you can actually help preserve it and keep it in beautiful condition for future generations? It’s true. Conservation framing is a way to protect your art. There are many elements that can discolor, fade or even deteriorate artwork and memorabilia. Guarding against pollution, light, heat, humidity, insects and poor cleaning practices is vital to caring for your art properly, not only for your own enjoyment, but for its value to future generations as well. That is why custom framing is so important! Those precious memories and treasures that may be tucked away in a closet or drawer can be turned into beautiful shadow boxes and proudly displayed. Whether it is a family heirloom, one of a kind piece of artwork, that collection of fishing lures, military medals, Girl Scout Badges, or baseball cards that have been collecting dust can now be preserved forever in an artistic protective manner. “Art should evoke an emotional response in its owner, and it is those feeling and memories you are preserving when you invest in custom framing,” say owners Mary Jane and Beth. Stop by The Cottage today not only to see a wide selection of frames and mats, but also items by local artisans and authors. Mary Jane and Beth will help you achieve the look you want and keep your treasures looking their best for years to come.

ena Rodewolt was at the top of her game in 2015, becoming the top salesperson in Rincon for ERA Southeast Coastal Real Estate. She’s at the top of her game now. But she didn’t start at the top. Rodewolt left teaching in 2004 to have a child. She got into Real Estate in 2007, never dreaming the Great Recession was just around the corner and the bottom was about to fall out of the economy. Many real estate agents found themselves looking for other work. “I built my business when everything was falling apart,” she said. “And because I wasn’t an established real estate agent, I didn’t have connections with estabalished builders and lenders. I had to make it on my own.” Despite the odds, Rodewolt made it. She’s become a member of the Savannah Realtors’ Distinguished Sales Society, she’s on ERA Southeast Coastal Real Estate’s A-Team, an invitation-only honor meaning she’s certified to work with Cartus Broker Network corporate clients, and she is a USAA Real Estate Rewards Network Preferred Agent and a Navy Federal Credit Union Realty Plus Preferred Agent. And all this didn’t just happen. It happened because Rodewolt, born and raised in Effingham County and married to a Georgia State Patrol Trooper, delivered what clients wanted; knowledge, experience, great service. It happened through word of mouth. It happened because Rodewolt loves what she does. Her work ethic and her professionalism shows just how much she values her career, and her clients. “My motto is, “A Reputation Built on Referrals,” Rodewolt said. “I’m proud that customers think so highly of me. I couldn’t ask for a higher compliment than receiving a new referral from a past client.” Find out for yourself why. Paid For Adverisement

DiAnna proudly assists home buyers and sellers in and around Savannah and works to simplify the process of real estate for her clients. If you’re selling, DiAnna has years of marketing experience. Once you find that home, she will negotiate to make it a dream come true.
