Due to continuous traffic in and around the Holland Tunnel entrance and exit, air pollution hovers at dangerous levels in and around this lower Manhattan site. The Air Purification structure is located at the center of New York City’s pollution at the convergance of Varick Street, Canal Street, and Sixth Avenue. Pollution emitted from vehicles and buildings can be clearly seen during the heavy rush hour and on humid days at this location. Partners: Thomas Jansen and Kelly Berger

A systematic approach acts as the backbone to this urban intervention, using cutting-edge materials and modular fabrication to facilitate the clean air initiative that the building not only represents but fully embodies. The iconic crystalline form assists in gripping public interest to this working air purification mechanism, while the interior ‘parasol’ draws visitors from the subway and sidewalk to experience the imbedded learning and social spaces.
