Moscow Public Library This public service project is an addition to the current public library for the city of Moscow, Idaho. The current library is a historic Carnegie Library, built in 1906 in the Spanish mission style, with a budget of $10,000. Up until 1994, the library solely served Moscow, but since then it has acted as the central hub library for the Latah County, distributing and archiving materials, coordinating events between smaller libraries throughout the county, and managing new and outdated media. This project allows interconnectivity of spaces through use of transclucent and transparent glazing, which separates strategically placed “active” and “quiet” spaces. the building envelope emphasizes the different spaces, as well as the dynamism that comes with reading and learning and interacting.
Building segments stretch out to recognize street and perforate building mass Open outdoor space adjacent to sidewalks lures public to loiter in and around library Height differentiation between building programs delineates space and takes advantage of natural light
MAKE: Pavilion Museum/Arts Facility, Chicago, Illinois The MAKE Pavilion was designed for a busy intersection in downtown Chicago, IL. To be comissioned by the city in collaboration with the Art Institute, the pavilion is a place for artists, musicians, and writers to create, teach, and learn. It also features an art exhibition space and auditorium. The pavilion’s dynamic interior envelope makes reference to the el trains that are notoriously associated with Chicago’s downtown, and the floor plan creates a very specific experience for the pavilion’s visitors. The pavilion activates an otherwise dead corner in downtown, and is an engaging midpoint between the Chicago Art Institute and its Contemporary Art Museum, which anchors the famed Millenium Park. This project is meant to be for the for the public, with free admission and close access to transit lines, and for artists to engage the community and connect two keystones of dowtown Chicago.

Fire Station 5 Idaho Concrete Masonry Association Competition, Honorable Mention, 2012 This project is designed to be a symbol of safety and community sanctity for the city of Boise, Idaho. As an emergency response center, it is also, perhaps more importantly, designed to provide refuge for hard working fire fighters in off hours and post-emergency situations. This was achieved by interconnecting spaces through parallel planes and material use, as well as ample daylighting and extensive outdoor spaces.

Chair 5
International Woodworking Fair 2014, Student Competition: Finalist
This cherry wood lounge chair was developed through a reworking of traditional Danish Modern design principles, emphasizing clean lines and craftsmanship. The angularity of the chair is intended to convey interest of form while still maintain simplicity of construction. The angles also reinterpret the typically organic form of Danish Modern pieces in a contemporary way, and are meant to be interesting and timeless. The wool upholstery’s neutral, yet bold color complements the piece, and was chosen for its geometric pattern that mimics the angles of the chair.
Architecture Abroad: China, Summer 2013 Group project with students from Jiangsu University
This project was a two-week collaboration between a University of Idaho architecture and landscape architecture students and environmental design students from Jiangsu University in Zhenjiang, China. The project centered on the village of Huaiyin just outside of Zhenjiang. Huaiyin, a town of no more than 2,000 people, is an impoverished farming town, like many others on the outskirts of major Chinese urban centers. This project aims to bring economic growth to Huaiyin by investing in agra-tourism, and redesigning the village center to better function for the townspeople. Because most of China’s rural inhabitants are below the poverty level, the redesign was also meant to be a case study experiment, utilizing tourism to jumpstart the economy in the town, while still allowing the local farmers and market vendors to make a profit on what their families have done for centuries.
the South gate formalizes the entrance, and prevents outside traffic from utilizing the site as a thoroughfare
pavilions on and near the 7 goddess ponds provide shade, picnic shelters, and destination points for tourists to rest.
clusters of trees throughout the site serve as markers, and tell visitors where pedestrian pathways are located
the public plaza is redesigned to serve as a venue space, public market area, and center of activity for the village. a restoration of the canal includes a water filtration scheme, with native plants and flowers. by rehabilitating the riparian zones on site, the design increases biodiversity and reduces the need for much mechanical water filtration.
the public farmhouses and courtyard they surround are located near the fruit and vegetable crops for convenience, and provide public market space that educates tourists and encourages them to spend time in the village.
Graduate Thesis:
Market Place for Ciudad Bolivar
Ciudad Bolivar, an impoverished district on the outskirts of Bogota, Colombia is city of nearly 500,000 people. Of them, 80% are inter- nally persons, people who have fled their homes due to war, violence, and oppression. These refugees come to Bogota for opportu- nity, only to find that many times they are ostricized by the local Bogotans, who believe that IDP assistance will lead to their own per- secution. As such, many of those living in Ciudad Bolivar are jobless, and because Bogota does not recognize Bolivar as an official urban entity, live without basic resources like sewers, paved roads and sidewalks, and clean water and electricity. This project is meant to bring the two urbanities together, and abolish the prejudice that separates and hinders them both. Markets provide services that everyone (regardless of origination or income level) uses, as well as public space, and this market would also provide jobs for those living in Ciudad Bolivar. Located on a highway median that divides Bogota and Ciudad Bolivar, the market acts as a symbolic union between the two cities, and jumpstarts a recognition of the Bogotan urban peripheral.
