VIEW of HALLWAY
In collaboration with Jennalee Rowden Revit | Photoshop | Illustrator Designed for students in mind, McComas Hall houses many services that are critical components of a healthful, and purposeful life. The building’s centrally-located hallway serves as a space that is conducive to both individual and social activities. Thousands of students utilize this space every day for personal growth and to find mental clarity. In order to create a space that supports the holistic approach to health and wellness, multi-purpose spaces work together to creative a cohesive network of experiences. Above all, McComas Hall is a space that encourages all Hokies to be smart, mindful, and strong in order to foster a healthier Virginia Tech community. Throughout the space, neutrals are used throughout the entirety of the hallway. Concrete, metal, and wood create a soothing backdrop for the pops of Hokie colors. Staying true to Virginia Tech, maroon and orange are used to excite and motivate students for success. As a compliment to the two warmer colors, a teal was selected to bring attention to the areas dedicated to mindfulness.

ZONING DIAGRAM The length of the hall is divided by color to increase energy, a place to reflect and receive care, and above all, give Hokies strength. The expansive transitional space allows students to study, gather, and reflect all within access to Student Services and the university’s athletic equipment. From the entrance to the very first set of treadmills, several different types of study spaces are provided. Each space is outfitted for different levels of collaboration. There are booths with dropped ceilings for a higher degree of enclosure that are suitable for both individual and one-onone conversation. Cafe tables are great spaces for conversation and meeting up with peers. The bar-height desking is accompanied by perch stools for an active furniture component, and can accommodate on-the-go students.

STADIUM SEATING
The hallway is a linear space that automatically encourages movement through the length of the space. The pre-existing columns provide smaller spaces for collaborative furniture. The length of the hallway is broken down in to three different segments. As one enters the building, orange provides a burst of energy and excitement. In the middle of the space, a complementary teal encourages students to be mindful. This space is for students to take a break, to work on their individual selves, and to be mindful. The third space represents strength for students who are about to enter the gym space. At the entrance of the building a grab and go area is placed for students to fuel up after a workout. Nutritional foods are provided in order to encourage a healthy lifestyle. The ability to pick up food quickly is a great fit for Hokies on the go. Lockers of different sizes are provided in order to reduce wasted space. Smaller lockers are fit for key and wallet storage so that small items do not take up space for people who need to store larger items. SPATIAL AXON

THE RETREAT A CO-WORKING COMMUNITY
In collaboration with Alexis McCarty Revit | Photoshop | Illustrator The Retreat, a playful refuge located in the heart of Washington DC, is a place for professionals to work and to escape the stressful environment of such a powerful city. Located in the Chinatown neighborhood of Washington DC, this co-working space was designed to inspire in order to foster a community of collaboration and innovation. The Retreat brand was founded on the principle of freedom of speech, staying true to what is important in the nation’s capital. Members should feel comfortable to express themselves and do their best work at all times within the space. The playful environment is welcoming and creates the opportunity for different styles of work. Throughout the 10,000 sq. ft. office, there are several opportunities for privacy and varying degrees of collaboration. The co-working space is an opportunity for patrons to form a community within the large metropolitan city that is Washington DC. Members have access to private offices, open benching, and endless combinations of collaborative furniture. Each area within the community is designed to encourage collaboration and conversation across any sector of work. Views to Massachusetts Avenue flank the entirety of the space, thus providing constant access to natural daylight. Millennial Pink, Sky Blue, and Lavender are used to appeal to creatives and young professionals who may oppose a more formal work setting.

Behind the reception desk, a wall of Washington Post newspaper front pages are collaged to bring an aspect of Washington DC into the office space. With the incorporation of local elements, a sense of community is formed within the space. A series of private phone boots are placed to provide a quiet space for members to take phone calls with the ability to use a laptop or to take notes. The space is small enough to encourage members to only use the space for a small period of time in order to increase collaboration. Beside the phone booths stands a work table with office supplies and storage for the community. Outside of the primary conference space is a seating area to serve as a transition to and from meetings as the room is booked on an hourly basis. Members may break out from a meeting and use the seating as a space to finish up any unfinished business. RECEPTION DESK ELEVATION

Revit | Photoshop Creating a vibrant atmosphere within YouTube’s Washington D.C. satellite office. Located in Southwest DC, YouTube’s office emerges among the newly revitalized neighborhood. It was important to create a space that would encourage creativity, collaboration, and engagement within the office as well as the community. The idea of transparency influenced design decision making. YouTube values the idea of being transparent with employees and the world. With that, glass and honest materials were used throughout the office space. Yellow and blue were used to bring the natural world indoors in order to protect the health and welfare of the employees. An open benching system was used because of the informal corporate culture that exists at YouTube. Also, benching increases discussion among employees, thus reinforcing the idea of transparency. At the heart of the office, a community kitchen provides a gathering space for each employee as well as visitors and clients in order to open the lines of communication.

Work spaces are organized in order to increase collaboration and information sharing. Stadium seating breaks up the benching by providing a space for lounging, an alternative place to do work, and an informal meeting space. The private offices are reserved for managerial positions. The offices have glass walls to create a sense of transparency between employees and managers. Bringing natural daylight to the interior is a critical component to the office design. Light and natural materials are used to brighten and inspire. Pre-existing brick is preserved from the building’s previous life as a warehouse facility in the industrial part of town.
SECOND FLOOR PLAN
Overall, this is a space designed with the employee in mind. Each space is carefully calculated to provide the best day-to-day experiences. Also, this space is designed to impress clients and visitors around the Washington DC area.
