HAIR TIPS
Dealing with
skin dryness Dry skin has a parched look caused by its lack of ability to retain moisture. Characteristics of dry skin are fine pores, dryness, fine lines, roughness, tight, uncomfortable feeling, and dull appearance. If your skin feels the same, it’s a fair bet you’ve got a dry complexion. It is important to remember to cleanse your skin according to your skin type. n
Dry skin is caused by too little sebum in the lower levels of skin and too little moisture in the upper levels. It feels tight and itchy after washing. It requires soothing care to look its best. It is essential to take proper care to hydrate it. Only then you can begin to enjoy a new, softer skin. Dry skin is very reactive to the environment and hates extremes of cold, heat and wind. It tends to peel and has a tendency to premature aging with the emergence of fine lines and wrinkles. There is a difference between a dehydrated skin and a dry skin. While the dehydrated skin is simply thirsty, dry skin needs extra care in adapting a beauty regime to nourish the weakened corneal layer. While dealing with dry skin, your objective should always be to restore tone to the lipids in the corneal layer.

Q A
What’s the best way of removing hair from the bikini area?
Waxing and sugaring are the best ways to remove hair from the bikini area. Though temporary, these methods give a clean, smooth surface and the longest-lasting results (so less maintenance is required). Hair grows back finer because waxing pulls the hair out below the surface of the skin. Plus, waxing does not irritate the skin and nerve endings as shaving and depilatories do, so red bumps and irritations are kept to a minimum.
Changing your hair colour If you’ve been toying with the idea of changing your hair colour for a while, then now’s the time to do it! Blonde, brunette, red, we help you to make the right choice for your colouring. If you’re not sure, dip your toe in the water with semipermanent colour first, but if you’ve found your ideal colour, then dive straight in with permanent colour. n
You and your hair How often your hair needs a wash depends on your hair type, texture and lifestyle. Those with finer hair will need to wash every other day because their hair can become dirty very quickly. Those with coarser hair, however, can get away with a wash every 3 to 5 days. Other factors, such as if you have an active lifestyle, use a lot of styling products or work in a messy environment will also need to be considered when working out your washing routine. n
Indispensables for sexy summer hair Here’s our list of indispensables for sexy summer hair: n P rotective products and haircare. Gel, spray or nourishing oils are a must, and because it’s summer wet-look, glossy hair is what we want. Go for a natural rather than a hairsprayed look. n A ccessories with little grips in different colours if possible, pins and grips and wide hair bands. n A bandana, headscarf and large headband.

HAIR STYLES
STYLE FINDER If you’re looking for a haircut it can often help to find a little inspiration. There are a variety of classic haircuts that many people choose and stick with. However for those looking for a change there are many different styles available.
Afro is a popular style that many entertainers such as Jimi Hendrix have made popular. An afro is formed from curly hair that is straightened out using a special comb called an afro pick.
Bangs is another name for a fringe that hangs over the forehead. Fringes can be arranged in many different ways and are common amongst teenage emo gangs. Crew Cut is another popular haircut that is achieved using an electric razor. Crew cuts are extremely short and require no maintenance. Dreadlocks are formed by leaving hair to grow naturally without intervention from any grooming combs or products. Many people choose synthetic dreadlocks made from a variety of materials. Fades are a popular style created by combining crew cuts of different lengths to create a gradual fade in definition. Hime Cut is a popular style that has originated from Asian culture. This style focuses on the fringe with parallel bangs at the side. Hime translates into princess which is fitting as this is a very high maintenance, glamorous cut. Mullet is a hair style that was popular throughout the eighties. The mullet consists of short hair

on top with a long back. The mullet is currently enjoying a revival as a style for men and women. Odango is another popular haircut for females from Asian culture. Hair is tied into buns two buns on either side of the head with ponytails extending from them. Perm is a hairstyle that is popular mainly with older female citizens. Perm is short for permanent and the style is achieved by using chemicals formulas to add curls to hair. Quiff is a men’s style where the hair is raised from the top of the head. Quiffs need regular maintenance to look their best. Ringlets are a style that has had many revivals throughout time. Ringlets can appear naturally in people with curly hair or can be created using curling irons for anyone with long hair. Sidefringe is a female haircut that covers the eyes. The style is worn with the long fringe swept to one side so that only one eye is covered. Updo is a style that many women wear for formal events. The look is achieved by tying hair back into a ponytail and then securing it to the top of the head using clips or pins. n

TANNING
A HISTO OF TANN It was often thought by many that health and beauty was associated with a deep bronze tan, but this was not always the case. Before the 20th century, those who were in a privileged enough position in society would shun the sun. There are many examples, throughout history of societies who valued pale skin. The Romans and Greeks, for example, used lead paints and chalks to whiten their skin, often with disastrous long-term effects like lead poisoning. Arsenic was another favourite skin whitener, further demonstrating that people throughout history have shown poor judgment!

TANNING
In Elizabethan England, pale-faced women would even paint blue lines on their skin to make it appear translucent, and women carried parasols to protect themselves when they went outdoors. The fashion was for delicately pale, nearly translucent skin; anything darker was decidedly déclassé. Only the poor were tanned. A bronzed skin indicated lives that were spent toiling under the elements. Their betters covered their bodies, pulled the curtains and hid behind parasols and wide-brimmed hats. Like modern-day Goths, they even used cosmetics to make their skin look or remain lighter. But 100 years ago sunbathing and tanning were only indulged in for health reasons, to cure or prevent diseases. In 1903 Dr Auguste Rollier opened the world’s first dedicated sun clinic, at Leysin, high in the Swiss Alps. He was convinced that the pure air and bright sunlight could cure diseases, most particularly forms of external tuberculosis, which were usually treated, often unsuccessfully, with surgery. His book Heliotherapy offers photographic evidence that dramatically proves his point. Pale, pigeon-chested specimens with horrific
10
skin lesions are transformed by a few months of surgical sunning. During the first few days, rest in bed indoors was imperative and only gradually was the patient allowed to get accustomed to the open air through judicious use of fan-lights, windows and doors. This gradual process of acclimatisation took about two weeks and only then were his patients allowed to dip their toes into the sun baths. The process was rarefied into a therapeutic mystery of extraordinary complexity. A “healthy” tan meant exactly that, proof that the rays had worked their curative magic. Health appeared to radiate from these rejuvenated bodies, and after a while these rays extended their influence beyond the sanatorium. A new ideal rose with the dawn of the 20th century. A new age of bronze had arrived. Rollier was not alone in adopting the therapeutic or hygienic properties of sunlight. As the new advocates often pointed out, the benefits of sunlight and air had been a central part of Hippocrates’ theories (4th to 5th century BC), but had to be rediscovered in the 19th century, when nature worship and industrial pollution encouraged a reexamination of these resources.
In 1903, the Danish physician Niels Ryburg Finsen was awarded the Nobel prize for his use of artificial sunlight to cure lupus vulgaris (tuberculosis of the skin). And John Harvey Kellogg (of breakfast cereal fame) claims to have employed sun baths “under medical supervision” at his famous Battle Creek Sanitarium as early as 1876. According to Kellogg, sun baths work “wonders” for gout, rheumatism and certain forms of tuberculosis, and can provide cures to patients with eczema in “cases which seemed quite hopeless.” Sunbathing started to emerge as a health fad and leisure pursuit in Britain in the mid1920s. A run of hot summers must have played its part in the new solar awareness. If nothing else, the summers of 1922, 1928, 1929 and 1930 ensured that people acquired new habits, experimented with new freedoms and ultimately got a taste for it. The fashionable were, of course, enthusiastic early adopters. As Britain sweltered in the summer of 1928, a Daily Mail society piece of July 16 remarked how a crowd including royalty, actresses and aristocrats had turned Bray-on-Thames into “an amazing reproduction of Deauville.”

TANNING
This popular fixation with the seaside as the exclusive site for sunbathing caused concern among its more evangelical exponents. In the Evening Standard of July 27, 1928, Philip Page claimed that because Britain is an island “we tend to associate bathing with salt water and don’t really go elsewhere,” and then only on the annual holiday. “Thus for 14 days only are English bodies exposed to the rays of the sun. Probably for less, for with the English climate it is likely that some or even all of those days are sunless.” Page pointed out that the “sun bath” after the dip was as important as the swim itself, and contrasted the cautious Brits with the fervent Germans. There the “sun bath is not just an incidental episode in a short summer vacation.” They knew how to make the most of the sun, even using their lunch hours to catch some rays. In Britain, where “we do not see enough of the sun...We do not make enough of the sun when we do see him”. This was cause for concern. From the perspective of some 80 years this is a revelation. If the Germans started the trend, the British have learnt to catch up, and are now neck-and-neck, towel-to-towel the Med over. We display a devotion to sunshine and a heroic determination to make the most of it every time it appears. “Phew, what a scorcher!” declares the tabloid, and devotes at least a spread to recording a nation determined not to waste a drop. But, outside nudist and fashionable circles, it looks as though this is an attitude we had to learn, and were actively encouraged to adopt. Health experts displayed an extraordinary faith in the virtues of sunshine and made it a popular propagandist cause. By the mid-1920s the poor had largely forsaken the fields for sunless factories and mines, allowing the genteel to do a complete volte-face. The great outdoors called and, if you were out in the sun, you were going to get tanned. But that was okay. Tanning came into vogue by accident when in 1923 French designer; Coco Chanel was seen leaving a nobleman’s yacht with a deep suntan after cruising from Paris to Cannes. Although she later claimed to have stayed out in the sun too long, her tan soon set a fashion trend. The looser clothes, which became fashionable during the “Jazz Age,” meant that women were freed from clothes that covered all of their skin, which naturally led to more tanning. Coco may have turned tanned skin into a fashion statement, but sunbathing and tanning had been practised and talked about for a good 30 years before that, just not in a form that was appropriate for the pages of Vogue, nor quite how we would recognise it today. The only vestige of this prehistory survives in the phrase “a healthy tan.”
HAIR & BEAUTY n ISSUE 1
It also became fashionable to spend holidays baking at the beach; F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel Tender is the Night showed off the world of celebrities spending time on the beaches of the French Riviera. The nudists were the first modern sun-worshippers, the first to embrace sunshine out of choice rather than medical necessity. For a long time “sunbather” was a euphemism for nudist. One of the first British societies for social nudity was called the Sun Bathing Society, and there was also a British Sunbathing Association and a National Sun and Air Society. Before the 1930s, there was no real distinction between “sunbathing” and “nudism”. Given what constituted acceptable and even “legal” beachwear at the time, complete nudity and what is nowadays standard beachwear might just as well have been one and the same thing. For many it was. A newspaper from May 1925 reports how Bournemouth was strenuously objecting to sunbathing on its beach. It pointed out how beach attendants had powers to prevent anyone sitting on the beach in their bathing costumes. Bathers must “walk straight into the sea and straight back to their bathing tents.” The fifties saw the very first bikinis, and the “all-over” tan became even more popular. Self-tanning products such as brown creams and dyes also became available, allowing people to “patch” any white spots in their tan or even to simulate a tan. Even with these products, however, tanning was mostly restricted to the summer months, except for a privileged few who could make winter trips to warmer climes like Florida or the Caribbean. Tighter schedules in the seventies, eighties, and nineties put a real crimp in people’s ability to build and maintain a proper tan. Tanning studios and salons began to appear in the eighties to address this situation, and they quickly became highly popular. With just a few sessions in a tanning bed, customers could establish a base tan, and further trips to the salon would only enhance this golden bronze look. As the nineties closed and the world entered the new millennium tanning salons became a growth industry that remains strong to this day. New advances in tanning beds and booths have shortened tanning session times, and sunless tanning booths have provided a quick and easy alternative for those who prefer not to subject themselves to ultraviolet light. With more popularity these days than at any point in the history of tanning, the tanning “craze” shows no sign of slowing. n

ircles? If you suffer from dark under eye circles, you were more than likely to have been born with them. So, now that you have them, is there any way to get rid of them? Three types of under eye circles There are basically three types of under eye circles: 1. Hyper pigmentation – Hyper pigmented under eye circles can be dark circles often found in women with darker skin tones (African, East Indian or Latin descent). This is caused by the over-abundance of melanin in skin. 2. Blue-ish veins - As we age, the skin around our eyes thins out, causing the veins underneath to show. This is typical in women with lighter skin. 3. Poor circulation - These under eye circles tend to be puffy or baggy. This is usually caused by poor blood flow or water retention

under the eye. Large bags that don’t recede in time are hereditary. To determine the cause of under eye circles, press your thumb on the shadows. If the shadows momentarily lighten, the cause could be poor circulation. If they don’t lighten, the cause may be the result of hyper pigmentation.
How to treat under eye circles If you suffer from dark circles caused by the result of hyper pigmentation you may wish to consider laser treatment, although this doesn’t always work well on darker skins. The laser may turn on melanocytes to produce more pigment. For darker skin one option to consider using is kojic acid. Creams with hydroquinone are also commonly used to
treat under eye circles. Both kojic acid and hydroquinone may help to brighten the effects of hyper pigmented skin.
If you suffer from puffy eye bags, you could try and sleep on your back with your head propped up. Another consideration is to treat puffiness with black tea bags. Chill steeped tea bags in the fridge first. Place chilled bags over the eyes. The tannins in black tea can help to reduce bloat. If bags are constant and never go away, see a doctor for treatment options.
Camouflage under eye circles with makeup To cosmetically camouflage dark under eye circles, use eye creams that contain mica or other light-diffusing particles. For darker circles, you’ll want to use a creamy concealer. To apply concealer, first prep eye with an eye gel. Dot the concealer over any blue veins or dark circles and tap, never rub, concealer into the area surrounding the eye. n

COSMETIC TREATMENTS
Botox, smoothing out the wrinkles It’s not just the papped celebrities playing the fame game that are turning to Botox injections to minimise or smooth out lines and wrinkles, many other people are using Botox to regain a more youthful appearance, but what is Botox? Keeping it simple, Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin which when injected smoothes lines by blocking nerve impulses that trigger wrinkle-causing muscle contractions. It temporarily reduces expression lines and tells a muscle to contract. When low doses of Botox are used, it actually paralyses or relaxes facial muscles, giving the recipient a clean, smooth facial appearance that are otherwise caused by expression lines, the creases and wrinkles caused over time by frowning, scowling, smiling or looking surprised. The most common areas for Botox injections are between the eyebrows, in the forehead and beside the eyes. Botox can improve your appearance and prevent the formation of deep expression lines. It will not help fine lines or wrinkles that are not due to facial expressions. Botox has gained in popularity over the years for several reasons. It’s less invasive than a face lift and the results are immediate. The swelling goes down within a day or two, and while a prick from the needle is visible immediately after having the Botox administered, most of the evidence is gone within twenty four hours.
14
It is now becoming more common for people to hold Botox parties at which Botox is administered to several people in the course of a couple hours. Botox takes such little time to administer that a patient could even receive a treatment while on their lunch hour. Botox is also temporary, so if the recipient of a Botox treatment doesn’t care for the way they look, their face will resume its normal appearance within about three to six months. Of course, there are risks. It’s rare, but an allergic reaction to Botox could occur. Also, because it numbs the muscles, it can cause the appearance of surprise or make it look like you have a permanent frown. However, since Botox is temporary, these inconveniences don’t last long. Botox is also becoming more widely available at some spas. Not only can you can get Botox injections at medical spas, but many day spas and even resort spas have a special Botox day. If you habitually scowl or make another expression that isn’t attractive and is already causing expression lines, you could consider Botox. n

ANTI WRINKLES
Proactive skin care As we age, saggy skin becomes more and more of a problem. The skin on our face begins to loose elasticity as we age and facial muscles are no longer able to hold facial skin in place. This results in the development of lines, wrinkles, and eventually deep folds. Often the process begins with delicate lines such as expression lines, brow lines, and mild crow’s feet and later develops into more unsightly sagging in the entire face.
Preventing saggy skin
4. Keep your skin clean
The best way to deal with saggy skin is to ensure that you take a proactive approach to skin care and follow a few simple steps to help prevent the early onset of facial sagging. Here are some tips to help keep your skin firm:
Never go to bed with make up on. This will lead to increased stress on your skin and can cause pores to clog and become infected. Be sure to wash your entire face daily with a gentle cleanser. The key here is not to rub, scrape, or be overly abrasive in the process. As with most things in life, moderation is the key to achieving favourable long term results.
1. Keep properly hydrated It is important for adults to drink at least 8 full glasses of water a day. Water is your skins natural cleansing system. Water constantly works to flush away toxins and waste products to keep your skin soft and healthy.
2. Protect yourself from the sun Sun damage is one of the leading causes of premature saggy skin and facial wrinkles. Always apply a sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 15 if you plan on being outdoors for more than 30 minutes. Your sunscreen is one of your most powerful weapons against saggy skin and aging spots.
3. Don’t smoke Avoid smoking at all costs. If you are currently a smoker, do whatever it takes to quit. Smoking actively increases the signs of aging and can increase your risk of developing sagging skin significantly.
HAIR & BEAUTY n ISSUE 1
Reducing existing saggy skin What can be done about existing lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin? Traditionally the only solutions available have been cosmetic surgery, toxin injections, and chemical peels. Recent scientific breakthroughs have allowed for the development of more gentle cosmetic products that can reduce saggy skin as well as facial lines and wrinkles without the risks involved with other more traditional procedures. We all know that saggy skin can be problematic, but by following the tips listed above and carefully selecting your skin care products, you’ll be one step ahead in the battle against sagging skin. Keep your skin looking young and healthy by taking a proactive approach dealing with skin care. n

SKIN CARE
Your guide to perfect
skin Maybe you’re in your 20s or early 30s and you think you can’t possibly have aging skin yet. Well, you could be wrong. Your skin’s ‘youthfulness’ has less to do with age than how it’s been treated, so if exposed to sun, smoke and stress, your skin will start ‘acting old,’ losing collagen, glow and elasticity. Lines will develop and pores can seem more pronounced. It’s easier to prevent damage than it is to repair it, but the good news is there are things you can do to help prevent further skin damage.

SKIN CARE
Here are some steps you could take to help slow down and reverse the aging process to leave your skin glowing at any age. Stop smoking - Ever noticed the skin of a lifelong smoker? It can appear wrinkly and prune like. The fact is, smoking is the second biggest cause of skin damage after sun exposure. Why? Nicotine constricts blood vessels and decreases the flow of oxygen to the skin. Consider using AHA or BHA (also known as retinols) every day. A daily application of a one percent prescription retinoid lotion could help erase years from your face.
The surface of the skin thickens with a buildup of damaged skin, scar tissue, and dead skin cells. This unhealthy surface makes the skin appear dull and decreases the elasticity. Lines and creases begin to form and, eventually, deep wrinkles appear. By exfoliating, or peeling off, these surface cells, new skin cells regenerate and emerge, giving the skin a healthier, rejuvenated appearance. Use an eye cream daily - Eyes are one of the first places to show aging. The skin around the eyes is extra thin so you’ll want to protect it from the sun with eye cream with SPF. An eye cream can also help you prevent damage, and enhance your current appearance.
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA’s) are naturally occurring acids derived from certain plants, fruits, sour milk, and sugar cane. Betahydroxy acids (BHA’s) are a salicylic acid; these could be the next generation of hydroxy acids. BHA’s reportedly do not cause the red, irritated-skin phase that can occur with AHA’s.
The skin around your eyes is very delicate and does not produce any oil. So it is one of the first areas on your face that begin to show age. Even if you don’t have any wrinkles yet, it can still be a good idea to protect that area so that you can prevent future damage.
Frequent and daily use of cosmetic and skincare products that contain AHA’s moisturises the skin and could eventually help produce smoother, less-wrinkled skin surfaces.
Eye creams typically do not contain any fragrance, and tend to be more emollient than regular moisturisers. The important thing to remember to avoid tugging on the skin.
You must remember to stay out of the sun if you use retinoids. You are extra-susceptible to sunburns.
Invest and ingest antioxidants - ‘Antioxidants’ is a huge word in aging prevention. Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our foods which can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. When our body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce by-products which can cause damage. Antioxidants act as “free radical scavengers” and hence prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals.
Exfoliate once a week - Choose a formulation that’s best for your skin type. Chemical exfoliators (glycolic or salicylic acid) may work best for oily or combo skin, while scrubs found in microdermabrasives tend to work best for sensitive skin. The outer layer of the skin is composed of damaged and dead skin cells, which slough off naturally over time. Younger skin is more efficient at this process of exfoliation, which stimulates the growth of new skin cells at a deeper level. As we age, the glue-like intercellular fluid which binds the cells together becomes denser, causing the layers to build tip. This makes the process of exfoliation more difficult. The outer layer of the skin is composed of damaged and dead skin cells, which slough off naturally over time.
HAIR & BEAUTY n ISSUE 1
Antioxidant vitamins have potential healthpromoting properties and many people take some form of antioxidant supplement. Don’t pull and rub your skin - Aging skin has been under attack by UV rays, stress and carbon monoxide so don’t stress it more by pulling on it. Pulling and tugging on your skin can cause wrinkles to form, which could take 5-10 years to show up. Make sure that you rub or even pat, very gently when you are working on your face and around your eye area in particular.
If you are applying a cleanser, place a small amount of the cleanser on your fingertip and touch your forehead, each of your cheeks, your chin and on the centre of your face. You do not have to use a lot of cleanser. Rub very lightly on your forehead and remember not to pull and tug on your skin. You do not want to start those wrinkles to form. The importance of moisturising - While it’s a myth that wrinkles are caused by dry skin, moisturising can improve the appearance of lines by temporarily plumping them up. Moisturisers are best used on damp skin to lock the moisture in. Moisturising is a very important step to help prevent wrinkles from forming. You want to make sure you use a good moisturiser that will help the foundation to go on the skin more evenly. This will also help to protect your skin against wind, sun and effects of aging. Place a small amount of the moisturiser on your fingertip and apply it in the same way that you did your cleanser on the forehead, cheeks, chin and nose. Rub the moisturizer into your skin very, very lightly making sure not to pull or tug on your skin. Make sure that you have applied the moisturiser to every place on your face to make your foundation go on evenly all over. Rejuvenate your neck and chest - The neck and chest are first to show the signs of aging (they have fewer oil glands than the rest of your body), yet most of us ignore them. Look for moisturisers that have age-fighting ingredients like vitamin A (retinols), kinetin, copper or vitamin C. Always use a sun cream - You may have had it ingrained in your head since a very early age, but seriously, even in winter it can take just 20 minutes of unprotected sun exposure to damage the skin. Once you start an anti-aging regimen, you have to keep it up. The effects of acid peels, AHAs, moisturizers, the anti-aging products that remove dead skin cells and make skin look plumper do not last forever. You have to maintain them. n

The right hair cut can mean the difference between hours spent coercing every strand of your wayward hair into place or a style that falls perfectly into place with little prompting on your part. That is why it is so important to make sure that you have the perfect hair cut for your type and texture of hair.
E HAIR & BEAUTY n ISSUE 1
For most people, finding the right hair cut is not possible by simply looking through a few hair cutting books and picking out their favourite styles. The truth is that hair cuts featured in the top style magazines and style books have been chosen specifically for each model that sports them. Each hair cut and style has been formulated to compliment the model’s bone structure, colouring and hair texture. That is why they look so great.
The first step to great a great hair cut is to talk about what you want out of your hair cut with your stylist. Ask for cuts and styles that will compliment and work with your texture of hair, and that do not go against it. For example: If your hair is wavy, you cannot expect to achieve a sleek straight style in minutes. Nor can you expect to achieve a bouffant style on fine, limp hair in a matter of minutes.
It would be foolish to think that a straight, textured cut would be possible to achieve on a client with natural curly hair. And trying to put excessive layering on a client with thin and limp hair would result in a disastrous hair cutting experience. So, what can you do to make sure that you always get a great hair cut?
Along with your stylist, browse through hair cutting and style books and discuss different hair cuts that have caught your eye. Try to look for models with hair similar to yours. It is also very important to pay attention to face shape. So, choose models with bone structures similar to yours also. n

Makeup inspiratio Makeup does have an expiry date! It might not be written on the packaging, but there will come a time when your cosmetics won’t be as vibrant, smooth or nice to wear as they used to be. Not only is it a good sign that you’re possibly in the wrong season, it’s also important if you want to be looking your best! Keep your makeup rotated every 6 months or so. 20

COSMETIC TIP
Make sure you’re wearing the right cosmetics for your skin tone The tragic flaw many people make when buying cosmetics is not matching them to their skin tone. This makes it almost impossible when trying to find the right foundation and concealer, but it also affects the lipstick and eye shadow you should be wearing. There are ways to determine skin tone, and you should base your cosmetics selections around the right tone:
Learn to apply your cosmetics properly
Ruddy skin tone is associated with burning easily, but also with becoming easily flushed or pink-cheeked.
Foundation: Don’t forget to blend foundation into your neck, or you’ll end up with an unsightly line around your jaw; apply concealer after foundation!
Yellow skin tones respond poorly to yellowish foundation and concealer and make the skin look more flawed than it did before.

Yellow-olive skin tone is easily identified because it’s mainly found in people who tan easily and don’t burn often. So if you come in from the beach a shade other than bright red, yellow-olive is you! Olive skin tones are slightly grey or ashen, do not burn easily and have greenish undertones. Neutral skin tone has no obvious yellow, olive or ruddy tones, nor any features of these skin tones. Ruddy skin responds well to earthy colours such as browns, greens, corals and reds; medium yellow and ruddy skin tones go well with both light and dark browns; darker olive skin looks great in more vibrant shades of ruby and cherry; and dark skin tones love more natural, soft pinks, corals and browns.

Wearing the ‘wrong’ cosmetics for your skin tone can result in you looking washed out, accentuating blemishes and otherwise causing flawed skin.
Make sure you don’t look like a clown after you put your makeup on in the morning. There’s more to a great look than just throwing your makeup on, but there are simple and easy tricks that will have you looking gorgeous in no time!
Eye shadow: Apply your base colour from the inside out, then define your eyes with a darker shade in the crease of your eyelid; for extra definition, use a light shadow on your brow bone. Eye liner: Steady your hand by resting on a flat surface, and always apply from the inside to the outside of your eye; extending the liner beyond the end of your eyelids will give a great exotic look! Mascara: Two layers is best; apply the first layer downwards from the roots, then again upwards from the midway point of the lashes; apply a finer layer to the bottom lashes so you don’t look like a panda, then leave for a couple of minutes and repeat. Lipstick: The way you apply your lipstick depends on the shape of your mouth, but make sure your lip liner (if you use one) matches the colour of your lipstick; use a base or primer, apply colour with a lip brush and remember to blot; finish off with an application of lip gloss for perfectly luscious lips. n

1. Avoid wearing too much Makeup is meant to enhance features not bring negative attention to you. That’s what wearing too much makeup will do; it will bring you unwanted attention. Don’t wear too much of anything such as: Eyeliner: dark, thick eyeliner will make you look overdone and will ruin the rest of your makeup. Mascara: too much mascara looks fake and will flake. It looks especially bad if worn with thick eyeliner or dark blue eye shadow. Foundation: Make sure your foundation is the same colour as your skin. Foundation is meant to protect and give the face a smooth look. The magic word is blend. Powder: The same holds true for powder, not too much. Also, be sure to blend your makeup so there are no obvious lines.
2. Lips Apply lip liner to completely cover the lips, add colour and your lipstick will stay on much longer. Make sure your lip liner doesn’t show. Also, your lip colour should match your skin tone; wear cool colours if you have cool colouring and warm colours if you have warm colouring. If you want to make your lips look smaller, keep your liner on the inside of your lips. However, if you decide to make your lips look larger, going outside the natural outline of you lips is a mistake. This can look quite messy and unnatural.
HAIR & BEAUTY n ISSUE 1
when you are in daylight your makeup should be lighter than when you are out for the evening.
4. Too little or no makeup Some women don’t wear makeup because they are not sure how to use it and are afraid of being overdone. If you are unsure, start with light colours in your shade. Start slowly and add one product at a time. Maybe start with foundation, add mascara, blush or lipstick. If you are not used to wearing makeup, using a lot at first may be a little too much for you, so start slowly.
5. Overall look When your makeup is completed it should look natural. That means avoiding colours that clash. If you have dark skin and hair you will look better in darker shades; light colours will make you look washed out. If your hair and skin tone are light, light colours will look better on you. Dark makeup will make you look older and harsh. If you have oily skin, first use oil control moisturiser and foundation. Then be sure to wear loose powder, keeping pressed powder with you for touch ups.
6. Hair colour Your hair colour should also be in harmony with your skin. If you have dark hair and you want to add colour, keep it close to the same shade. If you have light hair, use light colours. As you age your skin will lighten, so should your hair colour. If you do colour you hair be sure you keep it up, don’t let your roots show.
3. Appropriate makeup
7. One last thing
Wear makeup that is appropriate for the occasion. If you are going to the beach you shouldn’t wear the same or as much makeup as you would if you were going out in the evening to a nightclub. Also,
Keep makeup looking fresh all day by doing regular touch ups, so don’t let your makeup fade or crease. n

HAIR TIPS
Most women look to celebrities when they want a new hairstyle. Sometimes this can spell disaster. Hairstyles are not a one size fits all. There are many different factors that can make or break a certain hairstyle. For example, consider your hair texture. If you have very thick hair, you don’t want to pick a celebrity hairstyle that is for thin hair. Sometimes it will work, but most often you are asking for trouble. Another example, if you have very frizzy hair, you don’t want to go with lots of short layers. The shorter your hair, the more the frizziness will be visible and the hair will be much harder to control. So, there have to be some judgment calls when you bring in your favourite celebrity hairstyle photo to your stylist and say copy that. Designing your own hairstyle can be the best way to get a flattering hairstyle that works for your hair and skin tones. Here are four easy steps that you can take to design your own look. 1. Start with your face shape. Pull all the hair off your face and stand in front of a mirror. Trace the outline of your face in the mirror with something that is removable, i.e. soap, dry erase marker. Stand back and look at the shape you have drawn. What shape does it most resemble? Oval, circle, rectangle, heart, inverted triangle or diamond?
2. F ind out which celebrities have your face shape and start looking at all the different hairstyle options these celebrities are wearing. 3. W rite down which features of those hairstyles you like. Maybe you like the side swept bangs from one celebrity hairstyle and the long layering from another hairstyle. Make copies of all the hairstyle features you like. 4. S peak to your stylist with your photos and notes. Show the stylist what features you like and them to design a hairstyle for you that accentuates the main features you like. It is important to ask your stylist about each facet of the hairstyle. If the first haircut doesn’t suit you, keep tweaking it. Sometimes it can take years to get the best style. n

Tips to avoid hair care disasters
So, what should you do to make sure your hair stays healthy, shiny and strong? Here are some essential must-dos of great hair care. Use the right hare care products for your specific hair type If your hair is damaged, dry or colour-treated, consider using hair care products formulated to repair this damage and add much-needed shine and resiliency. On the other hand, if your hair is oily, it may be appropriate to use a deep-cleansing shampoo and light conditioner to keep your hair looking its best. The right products should be at the base of your hair care routine.
Get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks Get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks as part of your regular hair care routine. Even if you are growing your hair longer, it is still vital to make a routine trim a major part of your hair care routine. Snipping ends before they split will keep your hair looking healthy and save you hair care headaches in the end.
Shampoo your hair only when it is dirty Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to shampoo your hair daily. Doing so can make your hair dry and hard to work with.
Add texture to your style By adding texture to your style, through perm or cut, you can greatly reduce the time it takes to style and perform your daily hair care routine. And you will look sensational.

Turn to a professional stylist for all of your hair care needs It maybe a fact that kitchen stylists and friends do not cost as much as putting your hair care needs in the hands of a qualified professional, but they can often cause blunders that end up costing you more money in the long run, than if you went to the salon in the first place.
Use professional conditioning hair colouring systems There are many hair colouring systems on the market, and the ones you choose can have a great impact on your hair care costs. It makes more sense to choose a system that causes minimal damage and conditions hair as it colours. This will save you money when it comes to conditioning hair care products.
Choose hair colour that compliments your style With all of the professional colouring techniques available, this part of your hair care regimen has never been easier. From chunky highlights to soft colour, you can greatly enhance your style with the right technique.
Use hair care products containing sunscreen Protect your hair with hair care products that contain sunscreen.
Use a wide-toothed comb when your hair is wet Comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb when it is wet to prevent breakage. The only time you should use a brush during your hair care routine is when your hair is barely damp or dry. From tips to make sure your hair stays healthy, shiny and strong - here are some absolute-don’ts to avoid your hair care disasters. n
n A void unprofessional and over-the-counter hair care products whenever you can. Many of these only offer false hopes and promises. n Do not cut your own bangs. Leave all of your cutting needs, even bangs, to your hair care professional. n A void excessive sun, chlorine and salt water during the summer months. Excessive exposure can cause severe damage that is irreversible even if you use the best hair care products. n Do not use clarifying hair care products on your tresses more than one time per week. They can strip hair of moisture and essential oils. n Do not purchase hair colour that comes in a box. n Never stick with an outdated look because you are afraid of looking different. Styles change for a reason. Ask your stylist to bring you into this decade with a new style. n Do not straighten your hair with a clothes iron. We have straightening irons now that won’t damage your hair. n Never use sun-lightening products such as lemon juice or over-the-counter hair care products designed to lighten hair with the sun unless you want a very short hair cut in the future. In the end, hair care is a very individualised and personal thing. Feel free to add your own flair and style to your hair care routine, but remember to include hair care principles that will benefit your hair and avoid those that damage it.

Straight, Silky
Smooth hair Straight, silky smooth hair is very much in vogue, but make sure if you are using ceramic hair straightening irons that you follow these top five tips to ensure that you don’t dry or damage your hair. Heat, whether by the sun, hair dryers, curlers and ceramic hair irons, all cause your hair cuticles to open. This opening often leads to dry, weak hair, resulting in hair that is damaged and lifeless. Ceramic hair irons have gained a lot of popularity due to their ability to make hair soft, silky and straight. But, incorrect use of these tools can lead to more damage than good.
Ensure your hair is dry A general rule of thumb when applying heat to hair is to ensure that the hair is completely, 100 percent, bone dry. When ironing wet hair, your hair is not able to soak in the moisture that it requires.
Use a thermal protector to protect your locks Before applying an iron to your luscious locks, make sure you are using a thermal protecting treatment on your hair. This can be in the form of a spray or cream that, when applied, helps to protect the hair cuticle.

Separate the hair into sections Separating your hair into sections when ironing will help you to achieve a more even and well-rounded application.
Slide the iron downwards After you have separated your hair into sections, secure the unused sections with pins or a clip. Using your hair iron, slide down the shaft starting at the roots and ending on the tips of that section.
Always use a brush or comb When ironing your hair it is always advisable to have a comb or brush in your free hand. This will help you to brush out the hair without touching it with your fingers. Remember, the iron is hot and could burn your hand. n

to banish A bad hair day Make tress distress a thing of the past with quick-fix solutions used by top celebrities. You’ve got an important meeting or you’re running late for work, when out of the blue a bad hair day strikes. Suddenly your hair products have lost their magic and your usual styling routine fails to tame your lively locks. Fear not – help is at hand with the following tips.

HAIR & BEAUTY n ISSUE 1
HAIR CARE
One of the best solutions for coping with a bad hair day is to prevent it from happening in the first place. The cut is crucial, so you need to get one that suits your hair type, face shape and lifestyle. There is also no point in getting a high-maintenance style if you only allow yourself 10 minutes to do your hair each morning. Combine a suitable style with regular trims and you’ll be amazed at how much easier your hair is to manage. You need to find the right shampoo and conditioner. This sounds like a simple solution, but products can make or break a bad hair day especially as hair products today are a lot more advanced to cope with the specific needs of different hair types. When washing your hair, remember to rinse away traces of conditioner, as any residue can leave hair matted, dull and unmanageable. Product residue can be one of the major culprits of bad hair days. It weighs your hair down making it difficult to style, so using a detoxifying product every few washes may help solve the problem. There are numerous ways of styling your hair, from the good old blow-dryer to heated rollers, tongs or straightening irons. The trouble is they all use heat that can cause hair to become dry

and brittle, so choose styling products that reduce heat damage. Make sure you take time to style your hair properly, as this is crucial to prevent bad hair days. You’ll want to make sure your hair is totally dry before leaving the house, or else you risk it kinking or frizzing. If you’re likely to be pushed for time in the morning, wash your hair the night before, you’ll find it far more manageable than freshly washed hair and you can wet it just before styling. If dull, limp hair is your problem, treat yourself to a deep conditioning treatment and try a final rinse in mineral or cold tap water to flatten the cuticles and boost shine. It’s also worth considering livening up your natural colour with an all-over, semi-permanent tint that will coat and smooth the hair shaft and give a really glossy sheen. To humble unwieldy curls it’s important not to handle your hair too much and avoid using a hairbrush. You could use a wide-toothed comb or use your fingers to separate curls for a more defined style. If you don’t have time to wash your hair in the morning, try spritzing it with water then scrunching it with your hands to revive the curls and tame frizz.
Once you’ve styled your hair, you’ll need something to keep it in place. A hair wax can be the perfect grooming product for permed, naturally curly or coarse hair. Fine, flyaway hair will usually benefit from a little serum to add hold and keep static at bay, finishing off by using a touch of fixing spray to help hold that just-styled look. Trying out various hairstyles will give you a selection of alternatives to fall back on when things don’t go quite to plan. For longer hair wearing a ponytail is the best way to disguise a bad hair day that’s gone too far. If your hair is long enough, simply secure your hair in a low ponytail at the nape of your neck, adding a little hairspray to control any loose ends. If you have shorter hair, consider using a high shine wax and sweeping your hair back off your face for a sleek effect.
Trying out various hairstyles will give you a selection of alternatives to fall back on when things don’t go quite to plan
Last but not least, prepare yourself for the worst bad hair day that’s beyond help. If you have some fashionable hair accessories on hand they’ll add instant glamour, yet provide a diversion from your unmanageable mane. Accessories are also a great way of inexpensively updating your hairstyle. n

Caring for your makeup brushes You’ve spent an absolute fortune building your collection of brushes and tools to help you apply your makeup, but how well do you care for them? Maintaining your brushes will not only ensure a good application, but also ensure a life-long use of the brush.
n R inse the brush and squeeze out any excess water using your fingertips.
Your makeup brush is also the perfect hiding place for germs and bacteria to lurk and reproduce. Therefore, cleaning your brush is not only essential for general care, but for hygienic reasons too.
n R eshape your brush to ensure that it does not lose its “form.”
Here are a few steps to help you keep your makeup brush in tip-top condition: n E very week or every second week, wash brushes with a mild shampoo. A good quality brush, made from good quality such as synthetic bristles or pony hair, will not puff out and will keep its bristles intact.
n L ay your brush flat and allow it to dry naturally. Leaving your brush to dry upright will weaken the glue that holds the bristles together. Always invest in a good quality brush. The “big name” beauty houses generally have good quality brushes that will last you well into a decade.
n G ently rub your fingers through the bristles and remove all make up residue from the bristles.

Pluck only from the underside of the brow in the direction that the hair is growing. Don’t pluck from the top of the brow and chance plucking too much, thereby losing the shape of the brow. You may also want to pluck any stray hairs between the brows. If you find it painful apply a lubricant before you pluck, preferably one that has a dulling effect like oral gel. If you find your eyebrows are starting to thin, use a brow colour to fill them in using feather strokes; do not draw on lines in place of eyebrows. Brows should be the same colour as your hair or a shade lighter. Your brow should start right above the inner corner of your eye. To determine where the eyebrow should start, place a pencil against the nostril and line it up with the inner corner of your eye. Your eyebrow should end at a diagonal with the outer corner of your eye. To determine this, place a pencil at the side of your nose ending at the outer corner of your eye. The eyebrow should arch above the outer rim of the iris. Be careful when you tweeze. Incorrect tweezing can ruin the look of your eyebrows and after a certain time the eyebrow will not grow back. If you use a professional, keep regular appointments and don’t let your eyebrows get too unruly between appointments. Or, after you’ve had a professional do your eyebrows, keep them in shape by plucking the stray hairs as they grow.

MASSAGE
Hot stone therapy allows you to experience a unique connection to Mother Nature. It allows you to feel relaxed and revived, while at the same time pampered and well looked after. This type of massage therapy is well known to help release back pain and assist in depression, stress, and insomnia. It’s also a great way to improve circulation. The stones are placed in an electronic heating device that uses water and vibrating waves to heat the stones. Once they have reached a certain temperature, the therapist will place these stones on specific points across the spine. The therapist may also place these stones in your palms and in between your toes. The stones are used in two ways during the massage. One is to

impart heat onto the body by laying stones under you with a sheet or towel between you and the stone. The stone layout will typically be along both sides of the spine. While these layout stones are delivering concentrated centers of heat, the therapist is simultaneously massaging the client with oiled, heated stones held in the palm of the hand with firm strokes along the muscles of the legs, arms, and torso areas. An authentic hot stone massage is not simply the “gliding of heated stones lightly upon the surface of the skin, but rather the stones are used as tools to deliver effective tissue and muscle massage at a pressure level comfortable to the client. You can usually request light, medium or deep pressure, which is the beauty of the hot stone
massage technique. It can be customised in an instant to your specific request. The hardness of the stones makes for a fantastic deep tissue massage. The heat from the stones will relax muscles; increase the blood flow to the area being worked on which further accelerates the healing process. This increase in circulation and the relaxation of the muscles also aids in mental relaxation. Once the stones have been allowed enough time to release tension, the massage therapist will gently use their hands to massage the skin using a combination of aromatherapy oils. In some cases, the massage therapist may also use the stones, instead of their hands to release muscle tension. n

HAIR TIPS
ORGANIC SKINCARE
Skin care has become a concern among many people today. Whether you are young, or a middle-aged individual trying to prevent wrinkles, how you care for your skin is important. The key is to properly cleanse your skin while making sure it retains all the essential oils that are necessary for that healthy, radiant glow.
There are many different types of skin care products available on the market for every skin type imaginable. Many companies are starting to employ the use of natural oils and minerals in their products, and the results are adding up. The first step to caring for your skin is knowing the type of skin you have. If you have oily skin, for instance, you would not want to use products particularly rich in oil. If your skin is dry, it probably needs oil. If you have a combination of the two, never fear; there are products that will cover that as well. Once you have established what skin type you have, you need to find products suited specifically for it. Seaweed is good for oily skin types, as it contains extracts that help wipe away the oil without stripping your skin of the essentials. One important rule to remember is that oil does not equate to moisture, so just because you have oily skin, that does not mean you should not moisturise it as well. Choose oil free toners and moisturisers for your oily skin. Also, be careful not to cleanse too often, as doing so may take away some of the oils your skin actually needs. Tea tree products also work well on oily skin.
HAIR & BEAUTY n ISSUE 1
If your skin is dry, you might choose products with Vitamin C, which has been proven to help revitalise skin. Such products usually contain some oil, which will help balance your skin. The toner and moisturiser you use will also likely contain oil, so as to give you an even skin tone. If you have combination skin, you might look for products that are advertised for normal to oily or normal to dry skin. Depending on which you are: normal with a bit more oil in certain areas, or normal with some dry patches, there are natural products that will help you keep that glow. Again, vitamin C products are often good for this skin type. No matter what skin type you have, be consistent. Try to choose a regimen of products that include the same or similar vitamins and oils. Cleanse regularly, but not too often. Be sure to tone and moisturise, as these are two very important steps. If you want to retain that natural look, natural is the way to go. n

Once your hair is completely dry, brush and style as you wish, or leave it down, as it should be less dried-out and more manageable. If your hair is not completely frizz-free and cooperative, rub a small amount of gel in your hands and gently smooth over your hair, paying close attention to the ends. Drying and styling time will vary based on your hair’s thickness and length. Even if you do not always have enough time to use this drying technique, it can work wonders on your hair for those special occasions. Typically, allow approximately 10-20 minutes for this process, depending on the thickness and length of your hair. n
THE PERFECT Sun-kissed hair A girly look perfect for the warm weather is a natural, unstructured bob. Clean looks work best in summer, with cut and colour coming together to make the most of your sun-kissed skin. Why not choose a soft blonde on a caramel base through the length, with a few ivory-coloured streaks for contrast at the front to highlight the layers? This sort of cut is best styled with the fingers, using mousse and wax after drying. A curling tong on the ends will make sure your hair doesn’t wilt even if you do!
Natural glamour Long hair is always in style! But especially this year it seems like everyone wants to have long beautiful hair. Go for the beach-babe look with a long fringe cut deep at the crown. Layers will soften the style, and by adding highlights and lowlights woven together you can create the appearance of real natural glamour. Apply mousse to damp hair for volume at the roots and then use a straightening iron when dry for a striking look. Why not consider extensions in your hair to make it fuller or longer?
Choppy crops For summer hairstyles, choppy crops are great for a style that’s quick drying straight out of the sea. Layered mid-length styles work well tied back for bathing and are easy to glam up with minimum effort away from the beach.

TIPS FOR LIPS
Lip magic As we get older our lips get smaller and thinner, it’s an unfortunate fact of life, but it need not be the end of the world or our attractiveness. If you don’t have the money or the inclination to run off and get collagen injections there are ways you can keep your lips looking great and desirable. By using simple techniques you can create illusions of larger, pouty and more balanced lips. Lipstick looks best on smooth lips. To keep your lips smooth use a lip exfoliant and always wear some type of lipstick or lip balm, especially wintertime or in the sun. To start creating wonderful lips use lip liner. Lip liner is a great tool that will keep your lipstick in place, define the shape of your lips and can make your lips look larger or smaller. Use a lip liner colour that is lighter than your lipstick and keep the pencil sharp. Use lip liner to outline the natural lines of your lips and then fill in the lips with a colour that blends with your lipstick.
40
This little trick will keep your lipstick in place. Never go outside the natural lines of your lips in an attempt to make your lips look larger. Lip liner will keep your lipstick away from the fine lines around your mouth, which will keep your lipstick from bleeding. Start by defining the V using feathery, short strokes that are not too sharp. After you have defined and filled in the lips with liner, fill with colour using either a lip brush or a tube. Blot with a tissue and reapply lip colour. For a fuller look use a lighter colour in the middle of the lip. n
Tips for lips: nM atte is the longest lasting lipstick but can be dry. nG loss makes lips look fuller. nF or extra definition line lips once again after you have applied lip colour. n Balms have SPF’s. n Sheer lipstick won’t last long. n Neutral shades will match everything. n Lips will look larger with a medium colour. n Moist lipsticks are more likely to bleed.
