Welcome to our autumn season Our 13-week season of theatre for young audiences features a wide range of exciting and entertaining productions from 12 imaginative companies which specialise in captivating young minds. We’re thrilled to be working with Apples and Snakes, England’s leading spoken word poetry organisation, on a provocative new co-production for teenagers; there’s an exciting three-day festival of new work for young people in collaboration with Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance; Fun Palaces, our free family fun day, returns for a fifth year; plus we’re pleased to team up with family singer songwriter David Gibb on a new musical show for children and families. After a break of five years, we are excited to once again be involved with Open House London, the world’s largest architecture festival; giving free public access to 800+ buildings. Over the weekend of 21–22 September, we will be offering free guided tours of our theatre and backstage areas. We are also delighted to launch Orbit, a new Youth Theatre group for School Years 10–13. This is our eighth group for young people. Find out more on page 18. In 2020 Half Moon Young People’s Theatre celebrates its 30th birthday. We will be marking the occasion with lots of special events and activities, but we’re very proud to kick-start the festivities by launching Theatre Passport, our ticket scheme to help unlock a child’s creative journey. Fibs and Other Stories by Dominika Lipniewska 6 Sep – 21 Dec 2019 A playful collection of artworks by illustrator and designer Dominika Lipniewska. Using geometric shapes and lines to create bold and eye catching graphic designs, Fibs and Other Stories explores the often humorous subject of white lies told by parents to children to protect them from the truth, or because they don’t know the answers to the questions children ask. For all our exhibitions, we provide a gallery trail for children and special events. School and community groups can visit free of charge to support young people in gaining Arts Award Discover and Explore. Contact Beccy on 020 7709 8908 or beccy@halfmoon.org.uk
FILSKIT THEATRE PRESENTS
Kaleidoscope Blink. Blink again. What do you see? Day by day your world is filling up with colour. Reds and blues, yellows and greens. Twinkling lights that glisten and gleam. Your reflection is staring back at you. Wide eyed and full of hope. Mirrors, lights, colours and sounds. The world is your kaleidoscope. Inspired by research into how a baby’s sense of sight develops and how they instinctively begin to categorise colour, watch as a multicoloured kaleidoscope is brought to life for you and your baby. At the end of the performance there is an interactive play session.

You’ll meet all sorts of feathered friends and you might even solve the mystery of what’s inside the colourful eggs. Crowded
How do you sort your head out when it gets too crowded in there? It’s the beginning of summer and the community festival is in full swing in the local park. Everyone is there. Crowds queue but among the smiles and excitement lies something that could spoil this party… Developed in direct response to the growing number of teenagers in the UK struggling with their mental health, Crowded tells the story of ordinary young people whose anxiety, depression and desire leads to harmful and destructive behaviours. Giving voice to emotions that are often unspoken due to social stigma, Crowded is a powerful, funny and uncompromising story, presented in a striking, immersive spoken word style with the audience part of the action.
10
It is written and performed by three exciting poet performers: Desree, Laura Rae and Slam the Poet, with additional text by Rosemary Harris. Originally commissioned in association with the London SPINE Festival 2019. This production contains themes that some people may find distressing. Also on tour nationally. Visit halfmoon.org.uk/crowded for more details.
Special Event
On Saturday 9 November, 5–6pm, there will be an open mic event for emerging talent, curated by Patrick Evans. Come along for an hour of free expression through poetry and spoken word in response to the themes of Crowded. Join us and feel free to take to the mic!

But should she accept the kind help of an eccentric man who mysteriously appears in her prison cell? Of all the fairytale characters, Rumpelstiltskin has got to be the most mixed up. He is helpful yet demanding; secretive yet nosy; short yet owning a name as long as his beard. Not surprisingly, this story of transformation will make you laugh and gasp at the same time!

Under the Frozen Moon It’s so cold in Nunavut that the moon has frozen. A greedy dragon has gobbled every fire and every light, leaving only the white glow of the frozen moon. Under the dazzling aurora and glittering stars, Amka’s family huddle together, fishing for eels and knitting plenty of hats. In this heartwarming tale, a young girl sets out to confront the dragon, who has hoarded all the fire and lights for himself. With lively poetry, transforming sets, exciting puppetry and atmospheric live music, Under the Frozen Moon brings life to a beautiful world of ice and adventure.
NORWICH PUPPET THEATRE PRESENTS
Thumbelina
There was once a little girl so small she could float on a lily pad and ride on the back of a dragonfly. Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of a girl no bigger than a thumb and her encounters with a frog, mouse, mole and swallow, is played gently amongst gardening tools, leading her to ultimate happiness in the kingdom of flowers. Using traditional glove, rod and shadow puppets, this is an excellent introduction to the magic of theatre.

Theatre Passport
Unlock a Child’s Creative Journey
Half Moon is your local theatre and has been providing professional plays for young people aged 0–18 since 1990. As part of our 30th birthday celebrations in 2020 we need your help to launch Theatre Passport, a free ticket scheme for Tower Hamlets school and community groups. This type of scheme has been very successful in other areas of the UK and we want to ensure children in our borough don’t miss out. Working together with businesses, organisations and individuals, we can give local children the opportunity to experience the magic of live theatre, many for the first time, and start them on their creative journey. Attending live performances can provide a host of benefits, including improving emotional wellbeing and giving opportunities to discuss challenging subjects. Enjoyment and education rolled into one! Please help us to ensure children can access the arts locally.
