Gourmet treats
From paddock to plate.
Tasmania prides itself on its fresh air, fertile pastures, and rural industries. With its cool climate, good rainfall and environmentally savvy population, many regional development innovators see the State becoming the food bowl of the nation. Flying over Launceston, Tamar and the North, it’s plain to see how important agriculture is to the local economy, with a patchwork of paddocks and vineyards, and luscious river valleys extending into the distance. The region’s beef, fish, seafood, cheese, honey and wines regularly take out national and international awards. Our produce is recognised in a variety of ways, such as our cherries being sold to exclusive markets in Asia. Many of Launceston’s finest restaurants delight in showcasing the region’s fresh produce. Some of our best are The Terrace, Stillwater, Pierre’s, The Black Cow and Mud at Seaport. So why not reward yourself with a visit to some of the restaurants, cafes and gourmet delis in the area? The Tamar
So much to see and do. The Tamar River meanders for 58 kilometres through the fertile Tamar Valley, from the boutique-chic city of Launceston to the turquoise sea and diamond sands of Bass Strait. With vineyards, orchards, pastures and forests, the Tamar Valley has something for all interests.

At its heart
is the acclaimed Tamar Valley Wine Route, Australia’s most awarded wine region, renowned for the quality of its sparkling wines, aromatic whites and pinot noir. Each vineyard and cellar door has its own special charm and character; many are small and family-owned, others state-of-the-art wine rooms. Other essential stops in the region are dotted both east and west of the Tamar. A Tamar Triple Pass will give you access to the three highlights: the Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre, Seahorse World and Platypus House. On the east Tamar, don’t miss the Pilot Station at Low Head, a classified historic town and popular holiday spot for locals. The rich maritime heritage of the Tamar Valley is evident in the present lighthouse (built in 1888), which gives magnificent views of the Tamar River. One of the valley’s many highlights is sunset over the Tamar River – enjoy the changing colours while sharing one of the region’s worldclass sparkling wines. Connoisseurs say they’re as good as the French! Facing page: The view from Brady’s Lookout. This page (from top): Low Head lighthouse; enjoying Jansz at Jansz cellar door.
• L ove the food and the view at Rosevears Tavern, Australia’s oldest continually licensed pub. • F or great snacks and coffee try the Exeter Bakery and Carbone’s Cafe in Beauty Point. • S top for a stylish lunch or dinner at the Cove Restaurant and Bar, or the Pier Hotel in George Town. ...continued on page 23

Launceston, Tamar & the North HOLIDAY GUIDE 2011-12
THE NORTH EAST
Legerwood Memorial Carvings Legerwood is home to the amazing avenue of memorial tree carvings, originally planted in 1918 by the families and friends of the tiny community’s fallen soldiers. When the trees were declared a safety risk in 1999, a skilled chainsaw carver, Eddie Freeman, brought the soldiers back to life in sculpture. South Mount Cameron is where you’ll find the Blue Lake. A legacy of mining days past, the sunlight refracting on the minerals in the floor of the lake turns the water a vivid aqua blue.
Ringarooma, Ralphs Falls & Cash’s Gorge Further east, surrounded by rolling farmland, is Ringarooma. Continuing through Mt. Victoria Forest Reserve, the landscape transforms to rainforest, with glimpses of the Ringarooma Valley. Stop at the Ralphs Falls picnic area and take a 20 minute walk through a wonderland of moss, ferns and Myrtle forest to Norm’s Lookout and the face of Ralph’s Falls. At over 90 metres, Ralphs Falls is Tasmania’s highest single drop waterfall. Cash’s Gorge is a beautiful (and easy) 40 minute walk through rainforest, tea tree, sphagnum moss and rugged terrain returning to the car park. At Branxholm, stretch your legs along part of the Briseis Water Race Walking Track. The 48km race from Ringarooma to Derby is an amazing feat of engineering, touted at the time to be the largest project of its kind ever undertaken in Australia. In the early 1900s Derby was the thriving home of the massive Briseis Tin Mine, employing hundreds of men and producing millions of pounds of tin. Take time to explore The Tin Dragon Interpretation Centre & Café, a state-of-the-art attraction where you’ll experience the epic story of the Tin Rush and the 1929 floods. The Derby Schoolhouse Museum gives a glimpse into the bustling days when the mine was one of the richest in the country.
In the far North East corner, call in to Gladstone for supplies, accommodation and park camping permits en route to Mt. William National Park. Long stretches of white sandy beaches, turquoise blue waters, coloured granite boulders and coastal heath and woodland provide a diverse habitat for a great variety of wildlife and birdlife. You may even catch sight of a passing pod of whales or dolphins. The green valley of Pyengana provides the rich creamy milk for Pyengana’s famous cloth bound cheddar cheeses. Grab a taste on the way to the magnificently St. Columba Fall; at a height over 90 metres this cascading waterfall is one of Tasmania’s highest and finest. Take the 20 minute return walk through cool and shady rainforest to the base of the falls.
In October Derby comes alive to the sound of mirth and mayhem with the infamous Derby River Derby. Competitors take to the river in all manner of weird, wonderful and creative craft to try their hand at conquering the river. Top (L-R): Legerwood carvings; Blue Lake; (middle) Ralph Falls walking track; (bottom) Hobiecats on Bridport beach.

USEFUL INFORMATION Getting to Tasmania Launceston Airport is serviced by Virgin Blue, Jetstar and Qantas airlines.
Mobile Phone Coverage Outside the cities, regional Tasmania has variable coverage on some mobile networks. Check with your service provider for details if you plan on using your mobile phone here.
To travel by sea or to bring your own car, the Spirit of Tasmania offers a yearround ferry service, departing daily, between Melbourne and Devonport, just an hour’s drive from Launceston.
Our Seasons Tasmania enjoys four distinct seasons, each bringing with it a different holiday experience. The weather can vary on any given day so it is best to wear layers and ensure you have a warm jacket in your bag.
Rental Cars All major car rental companies have locations both at the airport and in the central city. Tasmanian shuttle buses meet each flight and transfer directly to city accommodation venues or transit centres.
If visiting in our warmer months, due to our temperatures being wonderfully moderate and the humidity relatively low, many visitors don’t realise the strength of the sun’s rays. Be sure to use SPF 30+ sunscreen and always wear a hat. SEASON
Safe Driving A current Australian (or international) drivers licence is required. Speed limits are 50km in built up areas and 100km outside cities and towns, uless otherwise sign posted.
