who we are Cancer Council Tasmania is a not for profit organisation, established in 1995 and has grown over the last 20 years to meet the needs of our community. Every day, eight Tasmanians will receive a cancer diagnosis. The impact on them, their families, friends and communities is significant. With one in two of us being diagnosed by the time we are 85 years old, we will all be touched in some way by this disease. Every Tasmanian will have a cancer story. We are committed to achieving our mission and ensuring that we will be responsive to the needs of all Tasmanians, wherever they live. We are very thankful for the generosity of Tasmanians as we are 90% funded from the community through fundraising and donations. All the funds raised stay here in Tasmania and contribute to research, advocacy, support services and cancer prevention programs.
what we do • we provide quality support services for people impacted by cancer • we invest in cancer prevention programs which educate the community about lifestyle factors that can decrease the risk of cancer • we fund local cancer related research projects • we provide a respected voice for the needs of people affected by cancer • we ensure that all funds raised in Tasmania stay in Tasmania so we can support those in our communities who need us.
why we’re here • to prevent cancer by encouraging Tasmanians to lead healthy lifestyles • to ensure that the evidence and initiatives to reduce cancer risk are strongly advocated and well supported • to provide support and information to Tasmanians impacted by cancer • to engage with the community to raise funds to help beat cancer • to contribute to Tasmanian based cancer research.
what shapes the work we do Prevention To encourage Tasmanians to cut their cancer risk by using seven simple steps - Quit For Good, Eat a Healthy Diet, Keep a Healthy Weight, Be SunSmart, Drink Less Alcohol, Be Active, Sit Less and Get Checked.
Advocacy To ensure that the evidence and initiatives to reduce cancer risk are well supported by prioritising the areas where we can be most effective and ensuring that facts and information support our advocacy work.
Support and Information To empower and support people impacted by cancer by providing a quality and consistent state-wide service that supports people from diagnosis to survivorship.
Fundraising To engage with the community to raise funds to help beat cancer through engagement and building positive relationships, ensuring that we respect and thank our donors and ensuring that the public know where their funds are spent.
Research To contribute to Tasmanian based cancer research by engaging with our research community, assisting to grow the Tasmanian research capability and developing opportunities for additional investments into cancer research.
how we plan to get there We will adhere and embrace our values and ensure that our internal culture allows us to grow, develop and support our people. We will grow the credibility of our organisation through the effective and efficient delivery of quality cancer support services and programs to our community. We will ensure that our governance and business systems are solid, transparent and efficient. We will prudently manage our finances and investments to ensure the continued delivery of our services, programs and contributions to research. We will advocate for evidence-based public health policy changes and innovation that empowers people to manage their health risk factors. We will build long term relationships with our donors and community fundraisers.
