Teenage Pregnancy Research Report N O R T H E R N TA S M A N I A
Pregnancy
Setting the scene - a local case study CASE STUDY 2 Travis – father of Arielle 3 years and Dylan 8 months
Sexually Active Travis’s girlfriend of 2 years, Kayla, fell pregnant when he was 19 and she was 17 years. Travis had left school after year 10 and was in the last year of his mechanics apprenticeship. Kayla was in Grade 12 and had intended to study aged care at TAFE. They both lived at home but spent quite a bit of time at Travis’s friends’ places.
Authors Anne Blanch and Kym Goodes, 3p Consulting Pty Ltd Funded by UnitingCare Tasmania | Commissioned by the Northern Early Years Group

This section of the research focuses on the point when young people become pregnant and their experiences through the pregnancy. It links the key themes emerging from the literature review with the perspectives and experiences of teenagers in Northern Tasmania. This includes teenagers who participated in the survey, discussions with teenage parents through the focus groups, individual interviews and discussions with the service providers who work with them. The research at the Northern Tasmania level has captured young people’s perspectives regardless of whether they are sexually active, pregnant or parenting. The key themes emerging from the literature and local consultations about teenage pregnancy are: •
Impact of socio-economic disadvantage;
•
Health outcomes;
•
Education outcomes;
•
Barriers to accessing medical, health and support services;
•
Accommodation; and
•
The importance and place of relationships.
While they didn’t exactly plan to fall pregnant they had spoken about having a family after Travis had finished his apprenticeship and was earning a full wage and Kayla had completed her studies and was working. They wanted to be “set up” before they had a baby - in a house, with a car and fulltime work. They got carried away once and didn’t use a condom and but didn’t think it would matter because they assumed it would take a few months at least to fall pregnant. However, as Travis says: “...it only takes once and you can, and probably will, get pregnant.” Travis learnt most about relationships, sex, sexual health and contraception by talking to his mates and from the internet and from media such as TV shows and the movies. He also had a conversation with his mother about the importance of using contraception when he was 13 years. He remembers having sex education some time in primary school and again in Grade 10. However the strongest impressions and knowledge came from talking to his mates and media. In hindsight Travis says... “that if and/or when a couple are going to have sex they should be prepared, should be on the same page and to be aware that the image about sex and sexuality portrayed in the media is completely wrong and a fantasy-nothing is further from the truth.”
Pregnancy When Kayla thought she might be pregnant Travis went with her to the doctor. After the pregnancy was confirmed he rang his sister to tell her first. A few weeks later they spoke face to face with his parents and then with her parents. Travis’s parents were pretty shocked but, after Kayla argued with her own parents about wanting to continue with the pregnancy, 52
Travis’s parents were supportive of her moving in with Travis and living with them. Travis’s father was quite proactively supportive, particularly with practical details such as transport and purchasing equipment for the baby. At about 6 months into the pregnancy Travis realised that he would need to make changes to his life style and started by reflecting on the people that he hung out with. He made a clear decision about which of his friends would be appropriate to be around when he became a father and, for the last part of the pregnancy, worked hard to change some aspects of his leisure habits and cultivate new ones. Travis was a supportive partner to Kayla during the pregnancy and felt that it is part of a father’s responsibility to make sure that his pregnant partner was looked after. For Travis this meant attending antenatal clinic appointments, prompting her to eat well, such as eating more fruit, and reminding her to limit any alcohol and drug intake. They attempted attending midwife run childbirth education classes at the hospital but decided after attending once, not to keep going. As the youngest couple, they felt uncomfortable participating and preferred to use websites for their information. They were also the only couple in their peer group who was having a child and so talking to their friends about the pregnancy, and /or parenting was futile-they were generally not interested. While Travis felt he was able to research the stages and development of pregnancy and to some extent parenting, he felt absolutely helpless and very ill prepared, while Kayla was in labour. Unfortunately 3 weeks before Arielle was born, the business he worked for folded and Travis was without either a job or any qualifications as his apprenticeship was not complete. With financial support from Travis’s parents they had just moved into a rental property. To help make ends meet Travis sold his car, they used public transport and moved to cheaper accommodation.
Parenting When Arielle was 4 months old Travis found a position with a business that meant he was able to complete 53

There’s no doubt that Northern Tasmania, and Tasmania as a whole, is facing challenging economic times. The transition in the forestry industry has hit many Northern Tasmanian families hard, as have the recent closures of Chickenfeed stores across the region.

Therefore, throughout 2012, a priority for the Launceston City Council has been to attract appropriate, large-scale, jobcreating developments to the city and its surrounds.
Mayor Albert van Zetten.
Our staff have worked tirelessly to prepare for the introduction of the new interim planning scheme as part of the State Government’s planning reforms.
Our work in this area has meant Launceston’s new scheme was the first in Tasmania to be signed off by Planning Minister Bryan Green.
The Future of Play Spaces in Launceston - have your Say!
Overnight we saw more than $37 million worth of development announced, notably proposals for a new Target store at Mowbray, the new Bunnings hardware store at Invermay and upgrades to the James Boag & Son Brewery. The Council continues to work cooperatively with Woolworths, the Launceston Golf Club and other land owners to establish a discount department store at Kings Meadows.
But there will be more, and perhaps some have even been announced by the time you read this. The reality is that through this Council’s efforts, those proposals now have the chance to become a reality much faster because of our work on the planning scheme. That means more jobs, more economic flow-on effects, and better options for shoppers, much more quickly. It is extremely gratifying to see such major projects progressing for our city. In addition, work has recently started on the C.H. Smith site on the corner of Cimitiere and Charles Streets, a major development which will bring new retailers such as JB Hifi to Launceston. This site has been an extremely difficult one, and it is wonderful to see this project taking shape. I believe we can enter the Christmas period with a renewed optimism and look forward confidently to the opportunities 2013 will bring to Launceston and Northern Tasmania.

Continuous family lineage here has enabled the conservation of unique buildings and barns, as well as the preservation of valuable documents, including a farm work diary from 1829 that details a meticulous daily record of life under assignment. “To be nominated on the National Heritage List is a huge accolade,” says Louise. “And to be nominated and assessed as a World Heritage site is so important for all Australians. Whether or not the joint Australian submission wins, we should be proud as a nation. It’s the story of our convict heritage coming together.” Nearby Woolmers Estate was also owned by the Archer family until 1994, at which time it was bequeathed to a trust. But the punishment side is only 10% of the story. Ninety per cent of convicts went to work on estates like ours. We’re building a new story now, discovering pride in our heritage. These were people who introduced farming techniques and set up the agricultural landscape. Scholarships
All registered non-government schools are required to keep a register of enrolments and daily attendances of all children at the school. Attendance is checked in Tutor period by Tutor Class teachers at the beginning of the day and submitted to the School’s Attendance Officer. Parent’s are expected to telephone the School (6336 6061) before 9.00am if their son/daughter will be absent or late to school on any one day. If a phone call has not been received from a parent, the Attendance Officer (with assistance of Senior Campus receptionist) will attempt to make contact with home before 10:30am to enquire the reason for a student. An SMS message will also be sent to the number nominated by you. Each Friday afternoon the Attendance Officer will mail out an absentee letter to parents of any student that has an unexplained absence during the week.
Post School Policy Sports practices, co–curricular activities and Tutoring and Support (TAS) Sessions normally finish at 5.00pm or 5.30pm. For some activities practice in the early morning is necessary. The Senior School is a hive of activity until 5.00pm or later on all afternoons except Fridays. Students who have not been picked up at an anticipated time after school may either phone home on the phone in the Elizabeth Street Chapter Mall, or report to the Reception where someone will help them. Tutoring and Support is available free of charge in the School Resource Centre until 5.00pm on weekday afternoons. Details of what subjects are available for support are listed for students at the start of each year. Students not collected within 15 minutes of the end of a sports practice will, if the practice is off campus, be returned to the school (by taxi, if necessary). If students have not been collected from the flagpole area by 6.00pm in the summer terms, or by 5.30pm in the winter term, they should report to the Dining Hall and wait for their parents.
