SLEEP APNEA Signs of Sleep Apnea for Infant and Adult People Signs of Sleep Apnea not only occurred for adult people but also baby and child. Baby sleep apnea is a sleep-related breathing disorder. This involves the reduction and breathing that occurs during sleep. The partial respiratory reduction is called “hypopneas.” The total pause in breathing is called “apneas.” In infancy, the frequency of these events increases during the sleep stage from Rapid Eye Movement (REM). The majority of apnea that occurs in small premature infants is mixed apnea. Apnea that occurs in larger preterm infants and term infants tends to be central apnea.

This breathing problem can cause severe complications. Babies may not have enough oxygen in the blood. This is known as “hypoxemia.” Babies may also experience a slow heartbeat. This is known as “bradycardia.” The baby may even lose consciousness and need to be resuscitated.

Baby sleep apnea has two common causes. This can be a developmental problem that results from an immature brain stem. This can also be a secondary problem caused by other medical conditions. Usually, babies experience breathing instability. This can be a normal part of baby’s development. Even healthy babies can experience short central apnea. This pause may be an isolated event. This can also occur after the child sighs or moves. The duration of normal events is very short. They rarely last more than 20 seconds. Obstructive apnea is rare in healthy infants.
