GUIDE SIGNS SPECIFIC SERVICE SIGNS

Specific Service Signs provide information about businesses providing gas, food, and lodging to travelers day and night. Business Panels are the individual “logo signs” that provide this information. Mainline signs are located on the right-of-way of an interstate highway preceding the intersecting roadways where participating businesses are located. Ramp signs are located near the end of the exit ramp to indicate the direction of participating businesses. Trailblazing signs are installed if additional directional signage is needed on the intersecting roads. Complete specific service sign guidelines are outlined in the 2009 MUTCD; requirements vary by state.

COMMUNITY WAYFINDING SIGNS

Community Wayfinding Signs are part of a coordinated sign system that directs road users to key civic, cultural, visitor, and recreational attractions within a city or downtown area. Wayfinding signs are installed in the right-of-way but must give precedence to traffic control devices. Guidelines for creating your own wayfinding sign program can be found in the 2009 MUTCD, Section 2D.50.

AID TO NAVIGATION MARKERS

Aid to Navigation (AToN) Markers are the “traffic signals” that guide vessel operators safely along navigable waterways. They also identify dangerous or controlled areas and give directions and information. STREET NAME SIGNS The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) recommends that Street Name Signs be installed at all street intersections regardless of other route signs that may be present. An overview of the basic options we offer is below. Requirements vary so be sure to check with your local municipality to ensure compliance.

STREET NAME SIGN MATERIALS Street Name Signs have an aluminum substrate backing with reflective material on one or both sides.

Substrates Flat Aluminum (top right) is the same thickness throughout and is available in several gauges (thicknesses) and alloys (mixtures). Flat aluminum signs have rounded corners and are not punched with holes. Flat signs can be punched with custom holes to accommodate vandal-resistant “bolt-through” and square post punch installations. Flat signs are available in 6”, 8”, 9”, 12”, 18” and 24” heights. Extruded Aluminum (middle right) is molded to shape and shipped in sticks that are thicker at the top and bottom of the sign than in the middle. The thicker portions of the sign are called “bulbs” and add additional strength to your signs. Extruded signs have square corners and are not punched with holes, although custom punches can be added on request. Extruded signs are available in 6” and 9” heights.

Reflectivity The 2009 MUTCD specifies that Street Name Signs, like other Traffic Signs, must be reflective. Our standard materials are Engineer Grade, High Intensity Prismatic, and Diamond Grade™ DG3. Reflectivity requirements vary so if you are ordering signs for a home owner’s association or private road we recommend checking with your local municipality to confirm their specifications before ordering.

ANATOMY OF A STREET NAME SIGN The 2009 MUTCD recommends that street name sign lettering be a mix of upper- and lower-case characters.

The Prefix contains a cardinal direction like N, S, E, W or a block number.

The Primary Copy contains the street name.

The Suffix contains the street type: Street, Avenue, etc. or a block number.

This sign has a standard green background with white lettering.

Sign Height is based upon the recommended minimum letter height.

Single- or doublesided signs with traffic grade reflective finish.

Flat Street Name Signs are available in 6”, 8”, 9”, 12”, 18” or 24” heights.

Choose a Sign Layout The most common street name sign layout includes the name, or Primary Copy, and a Suffix like Road, Street, or Boulevard. We can also add a Prefix that includes a cardinal direction (North, South, East, or West). Block Numbers can be added to signs as part of either the Prefix or the Suffix and are stacked with the direction or block number.

Let us Handle the Sizing The letter size and series, the sign layout, and the number of characters in the street name determine the sign’s width. To keep sizing simple we use a range of standard widths and will size orders for you to ensure accurate measurements. Choose a Background Color Street Name Signs usually have a green background with white lettering and border. The 2009 MUTCD also allows that a blue, brown, or white background may be substituted for green to enhance visibility in contrast with existing signage in the area. Lettering must be white except when a white background is used. In this case, the lettering should be black.

Add Borders and Logos An edge border is used when the background and lettering setup is a color with white and is flush with the edge of the sign. An inset border is used when the background and lettering setup is white with color and is inset slightly from the edge. On extruded signs, borders will always be inset and applied to the center of the top and bottom bulbs. Organizations may also opt to add logos or pictograms to street name signs, either before or after the street name.

SAFETY SIGNS In 2013 the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) endorsed the latest best practices related to safety sign and tag technology by incorporating the 2011 ANSI Z535 standards into its regulations. The new formats use nationally and internationally standardized elements to better convey safety messages in today’s workplace. Hall Signs manufactures custom, made-to-order safety signs and tags that are built to meet your organization’s needs and best describe the unique situations at hand.

TYPES OF FACILITY SAFETY SIGNS A. Hazard Alerting Signs identify a hazard, the degree or level of seriousness, the consequence of involvement with the hazard, and how it can be avoided. B. Safety Notice Signs give notice of safety practices not directly related to physical injury. C. Safety Instruction Signs identify specific safety-related instructions or procedures and may supplement hazard alerting signs by conveying more lengthy safety-related instructional information. D. Safety Equipment Location Signs identify the direction to, or the location of, safety equipment. E. Fire Equipment Location Signs identify the direction to, or the location of, fire equipment. F. Product Safety Signs are signs, labels, tags or decals affixed to a product that provide safety information about that product.

Effective Safety Symbols provide critical information for accident prevention by promoting rapid communication to viewers.

The Message on a Hazard Alerting Sign communicates the type of hazard, the consequence of not avoiding the hazard, and how to avoid it.

• Safety symbols should be consistent in design, and clear and legible to a viewer. • Choose representational symbols that are more easily understood and include some specifics of the situation, rather than abstract symbols that may cause confusion. • Hazard description symbols are preferred over hazard avoidance symbols. • Safety symbols that depict hazardous movement are more motivating to the viewer and should be used when possible. • Symbols should not be overly cartoon-like or overly dramatic. • Provide the most important information first. • Write in “headline style”: eliminate non-essential words, omit pronouns (“this,” “that,” “they”) and articles (“a,” “the,” “an”), and avoid hyphenation. • Use succinct statements. The Action statement gives instructions on how to avoid the hazard. The Hazard statement identifies the hazard, and may be used alone if the hazard is obvious enough. The Consequence statement tells the viewer what will happen if the warning is ignored. • Use active voice (sentence format: subject - verb - object) and avoid prepositional phrases (“in order to”, “in the event of”). Our design team will format your word message in an upper/ lower-case, sans-serif font in a size proportional to the main signal word and overall sign size.

SIGN BLANKS ABOUT OUR SIGN BLANKS Hall Signs’ aluminum blanks are manufactured per U.S. Bureau of Public Roads standards and have mounting holes and radius corners in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Our aluminum blanks are chemically treated at our Bloomington, Indiana facility to meet ASTM B449 pretreatment specifications for paint or sheeting applications. Hall Signs uses a chemical conversion process called alodizing, which combines aluminum substrate with another metal oxide to form an oxidation resistant barrier film. Without this coating, aluminum would develop a “white rust” over time. The alodizing process prevents this deterioration.

Aluminum Gauge and Alloy Aluminum gauge is measured in inches and determined by the overall thickness after the aluminum has been rolled into a coil or sheet. Aluminum alloys are graded based upon the “strength of the mixture.” Alloy 3105 is a post-consumer and industrial recycled aluminum mix that uses a range of materials from aluminum cans to airplane parts. Alloy 5052 is an aluminum mix that contains new and unused recycled aluminum content.

Extruded Aluminum Extruded aluminum is available in one alloy mix, 6063. Bulbed extrusions are used to manufacture street name signs, while Ribbed extrusions are used to manufacture R15-1 Railroad Crossing “Crossbuck” signs.

Sizes

Use this formula for “flat” rectangle, square and diamond aluminum sign blanks: WIDTH x HEIGHT x .098 x GAUGE = WEIGHT. Need the weight of an unusual shape or alternate substrate? Give us a call!

Our sign blank and finished sign sizes are listed as Width x Height. It’s important to note this method of sizing because the size specification determines where the holes are punched.

As a full-service manufacturer, we also can supply blanks with square corners, without holes, or with custom hole punch patterns.

Phantom Points

Finish Options

Traffic signs are measured using the size of the sign before the radius corners are cut. On a spec drawing this is indicated by dotted lines extending beyond the radius corner. The invisible points created at the intersection of these lines are called Phantom Points. While there is little to no change in the finished dimensions of a square sign, Phantom Points do affect the finished sizes of triangle and pennant shape signs. A 30” Yield triangle measures 30” on all three sides before the radius is cut, but after the radius has been applied the sides will measure smaller than 30”. We recommend taking this into account when ordering replacement signs based on data taken in the field, as the actual measurements may not add up to the correct size sign.

Radius and Hole Punches

Our reflective aluminum blanks start with a base of our alodized aluminum and are finished with traffic-grade reflective materials on one or both sides. Available colors vary by material.

Hall Signs’ blanks are manufactured with radius corner cuts and hole punches in accordance with MUTCD specifications.

Alodized Aluminum Our alodized aluminum is bare metal without paint or sheeting.

Painted Aluminum Hall Signs’ painted aluminum is an .063 gauge, 3105 alloy material with a glossy, Polar White WF-Acrylic 80G finish on both sides. Note that protective premask material is applied to each piece prior to cutting and kept in place to protect the finish during transit. Hall Signs also offers non-reflective vinyl and powder-coated sign blanks.

ROLL GOODS AND DIE CUTS REFLECTIVE SHEETING GUIDE Per the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) all traffic signs must be retroreflective or otherwise illuminated to show the same shape and similar colors both day and night. Retroreflective materials work by returning light from ambient sources and vehicle headlights back to drivers’ eyes in a range of light and weather conditions. Hall Signs stocks retroreflective materials including Nikkalite™ Engineering Grade (EG), 3M™ High Intensity Prismatic (PHI) , and 3M™ Diamond Grade™ DG3 (DG3). Read on to learn more about current reflectivity standards, the materials we carry, and our product options.

Know Your Retro Retroreflectivity is the ability of a material to return light to its source. Most sign manufacturers refer to this unique characteristic as simply “reflective.”

Minimum Maintained Reflectivity Per the 2009 MUTCD, agencies are required to establish and implement a sign assessment or management method to maintain minimum levels of retroreflectivity.

To make signs reflective, traffic sign manufacturers use special materials that have a base layer of white or colored vinyl topped with miniature glass beads (beaded) or uniform microprismatic lenses (prismatic). This layer is sealed with a smooth outer coating to allow for printing with translucent inks.

Assessment Methods require evaluation of individual signs, either by a trained sign inspector who views the signs from a moving vehicle during nighttime conditions, or with a device called a retroreflectometer. Signs failing to meet the required levels of either method are replaced. Management Methods allow for the ability to maintain sign retroreflectivity without having to assess individual signs. With the Expected Sign Life method, sign installation dates are labeled or recorded and then compared to the expected life of the signs. With the Blanket Replacement method, all signs in an area are replaced at specified intervals, eliminating the need to assess retroreflectivity or track the life of individual signs. With the Control Sign method, the replacement of signs in the field is based on the performance of sample control signs, which are monitored to determine the end of their retroreflective life.

ORDERING INFORMATION SIGNS AND SIGN FACES Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) is a guide published by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The MUTCD defines the standards used by road managers to install and maintain traffic control devices (including highway signs) on public streets, highways, bikeways and private roads open to public travel. The most recent edition was published in 2009. MUTCD standard traffic signs are assigned regulatory codes for easy reference. A STOP sign is known within the industry by its regulatory code of “R1-1”, while a Yield sign is an “R1-2”. Referring to the regulatory code when placing your order helps us know exactly which sign design you need.

State Specifications Many states have created standards for signs and Hall Signs can manufacture any requested state spec that we have artwork on file for. While we do have access to most current state manuals, if the sign is new to us we may request that you provide us with a copy of the specification drawing directly from the

source.

Choosing a Size

Hall Signs offers every sign in our catalog as both a finished, ready-toinstall sign with an aluminum substrate backing or as a sign “face” or decal to be applied to the substrate of choice at your shop.

Not sure what size you need? The MUTCD includes detailed tables that list the recommended sign size for conventional roads, multi-lane roads, low-volume roads, freeways, and expressways. Still not sure? In general, bigger is better for traffic signs because larger signs are easier to read. Drivers often only have a few moments to process a sign’s message before they need to act on it, and response time decreases as the speed on the road increases.

Reflectivity To appear bright to drivers at night, traffic signs need to have retroreflective surfaces so that the light striking them from vehicle headlights is reflected to the driver’s eyes. Per the 2009 MUTCD all traffic signs, whether on public or private property, must be retroreflective.

Additional Options Overlay Film Overlay film is a solvent-resistant, transparent material that is applied to signs after printing and makes it possible to remove graffiti and other marks without damaging the print. Overlay film can also help prolong the life of signs that receive extended sun exposure. This benefit is only provided by select materials and its effectiveness varies based on the color of the sign and the conditions at the installation site. Be sure to ask your customer service representative if you have questions or specific requirements.

Hall Signs offers custom border detail on signs manufactured to order. We can print your custom text – typically a manufacture date or agency name – inside or outside the border, depending on the sign set up.

ORDERING INFORMATION TERMS AND CONDITIONS Order Processing and Production Lead-Times We process, pack and ship orders Monday through Thursday. A customer service representative will confirm an estimated ship date for your order upon receipt. Please note that this date is not a guaranteed delivery date. Estimated ship dates are based on current production lead-times. Production lead-times are subject to change as production volumes fluctuate. If your project is time-sensitive, please contact us for the most current lead-time estimates.

Rush Processing Rush processing is available on request. Availability and fees vary based on current production volumes. We will make every effort to honor requests for rush processing but cannot guarantee them unless we have been contacted before your order is placed. Please contact our customer service department for more information.

Deliveries A third party vendor has been contracted to perform your delivery service. Hall Signs is not responsible for any damage incurred during the shipping process. Upon delivery, the customer agrees to inspect for any shortages or damages that may have occurred during the shipping process. The customer is ultimately responsible for damages if not noted during the delivery process.

Parcel Deliveries Deliveries are made Monday through Friday with no advance call. The carrier will make three delivery attempts. After the third attempt at a failed delivery, the package(s) will be returned to our warehouse and you will be responsible for any return, storage or redelivery fees associated with the shipment. Examine your order upon delivery to ensure that there are no visible signs of damaged, missing or incorrect pieces. If there are damaged, missing or incorrect packages, please contact us within 24 hours of delivery. You may be charged additional fees if

the delivery address you have provided is determined to be incorrect and is changed by the carrier. Please make sure that the shipping address you have supplied is valid. We cannot deliver to PO boxes. If your order exceeds the size or weight restrictions imposed by the parcel carrier, Hall Signs reserves the right to use a third-party freight carrier for shipment.

Freight Deliveries Either you or your representative that is 18 years of age or older must be present to receive the merchandise on delivery. The delivery company is not responsible for off-loading your product(s) upon delivery. Please make sure that you have the appropriate staff and equipment available to receive your delivery. If no one is available to receive the delivery a re-delivery fee may be applied to your order. This agreement is with you and Hall Signs, Inc. Neither Hall Signs nor the third party delivery company that has been contracted by Hall Signs to perform the delivery will be held responsible if you decide to hire a third-party contractor to accept, receive and sign the handover of items without the notations of visible defects of packaging, damaged items, or missing merchandise. Please be sure to sign the delivery receipt in the presence of the delivery representative to indicate that your delivery has been received. Examine your order upon delivery to ensure that there are no visible signs of damaged, missing or incorrect pieces. If there are damaged, missing or incorrect packages, please retain the item(s), indicate the problem on the delivery receipt and contact us within 24 hours of delivery. A signed delivery receipt without notations of missing, damaged or incorrect item(s) represents your acceptance of the complete order in perfect condition. For other problems with your order please refer to our return policy. Should you discover any hidden damage after delivery, please contact our customer service department. Return Policy All sales are final. Merchandise may not be returned without prior approval from our customer service department. Goods returned without prior authorization will be rejected at the receiving dock. If you feel an error has been made in the production or processing of your order please contact our customer service department for consideration. If it is determined that an error has been made by Hall Signs in the processing or production of your order we will authorize a return for the incorrect merchandise. All other requests for return are at the discretion of management and will incur a minimum 25% restocking fee. If your return request has been approved we will send a return authorization form for your review. Make sure that all information on the form is correct. Your signature on the form indicates your understanding of our return policy and procedures and your compliance therewith. Your return authorization is complete once the form has been received by Hall Signs with your signature. Items approved for return but sent without a signed form may be subject to additional processing fees. Please package all merchandise for return in the same manner that you received it. Please contact us if you have any questions about packaging merchandise for a return. The cost of return shipping is the responsibility of the customer; however, if the error has been determined to have been made by Hall Signs we will issue a call tag to have the merchandise picked up and returned to us. All credits against the returned merchandise will be processed once the merchandise has been received, determined to be in good condition, and free from damage due to negligence on the part of the customer. Credit will be issued for the returned product only, less any restocking fees.
