Good afternoon everyone,

Today, we offer a very warm welcome to the players, officials & supporters of visitors Bristol Telephones Football Club & our match officials too. We hope they all enjoy their brief stay in the village and have a safe journey home too!

The last two games have seen us return to form after a shaky spell with a very dramatic penalty shootout win against Wincanton Town in the Somerset Premier Cup and a great 2-1 win at Portishead last Saturday. Our Les Phillips Cup tie against Ilfracombe, postponed a couple of weeks ago, has now been put back to January 7th when hopefully the weather will be a little kinder. Also, please note that the Boxing Day game here against Wells City kicks off at the earlier time of 2pm. Finally, as this is our last match before Christmas, we would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and as always, thank you so much for your support. Enjoy the game!

Bishop Sutton Club History

The club was re-formed in 1977 with just an U15 team playing in the Weston-superMare Sunday League and then progressing in successive seasons to the Bristol and Avon League U16s and the second and first divisions before being admitted into the Somerset Senior League for the 1981-82 season.

The next ten years were spent climbing through the four divisions before being voted into the Western League for season 1991-92. The First Division was won in 1997-98 and then followed seventeen successive seasons in the Premier Division, the highlight being winning the Premier title in 2012-13.

Unfortunately our ground grading did not permit progression to the Southern League and all the team management and players then left the club. Relegation from the Premier followed at the end of season 2014-15 and we have experienced mixed fortunes in the First Division since then.

For the season 2020-21 Jon Toy came in as manager but unfortunately we were only able to play 10 games before the season was curtailed due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Having retained a lot of last season’s squad and added a couple of new players, we finished in mid table in season 2021/22.

A big thank you....

... to all our sponsors....

Non-League Footballers Mental Health Championed by Bath Mind and the Toolstation Western League

Research conducted by the Toolstation Western League earlier this season highlighted that arounda quarterofplayershadconsideredseekinghelp witha mentalhealthissue. Thesubject of mental health was first tackled by the Western League in March 2020, when they launchedtheirThinkofaFancampaign.

Chairman of the Western League, John Pool, explained: “Think of a Fan was our way of remembering that for many fans, football is more than just a game. It’s an important release, a chance to meet friends, get out of the house and have some fun.

Many people are still working through the loneliness and anxiety caused by lockdown, but we must not forget that our players are no different. They are as important to us as any members of our football family and this important partnership with Bath Mind is our way of supporting them.”

As well as changing room posters, Bath Mind have provided leaflets for fans, as well as programme adverts, highlighting the variety of support services they provide. If successful, this initialpilotwillbeextendedbytheWesternLeaguetocoverall40ClubsacrosstheSouthWest ofEngland, fromCornwalltoWiltshire.

Hannah Roper, Director of Business Development at Bath Mind, said: “We at Bath Mind are thrilled to be working in partnership with The Toolstation Western League, to support and promote positive mental health for the football community.

Throughout the pandemic Bath Mind has been fighting an epidemic of mental illhealth. We have increased our services to meet the growing needs of our community, and help reduce pressure on NHS services.

Through this pilot we hope to encourage everyone to talk about their mental health, seek help at an early stage and reduce the stigma associated with mental ill-health. As a local, independent charity, Bath Mind relies heavily on local fundraising to keep our services going, therefore we are grateful to The Toolstation Western League and their fans for their fundraising efforts.”

BRISTOL TELEPHONES

Formed in 1948, Bristol Telephones were originally known as Bristol Post Office Telephones Football Club, as they were then part of the Post Office.

Playing at Bristol Civil Service Club, they had to leave that pitch when BT was privatised under Maggie Thatcher.

They then played at various grounds, until the overall social club purchased their current ground in 1984. Various improvements were undertaken but in 1994 the clubhouse, which was mostly wooden construction, was destroyed by fire.

For the next season, Bristol Telephones, as we were now called, were able to borrow changing facilities from Cutters Friday, whose ground borders our own, until the current clubhouse was constructed. In recent years this has seen substantial improvements such that it is now considered one of the best clubs in the area.

Telephones started life in the Bristol and Suburban League, being an ever present club in the ‘Premier’ Divisions since it’s formation, and our Reserves play in the Senior Division of that league.

Telephones were promoted to the Gloucestershire County League in season 2013/14 and became champions in 2016/17, allowing them to be promoted to the Toolstation Western League.

This is our sixth season in the Toolstation Western League having finished just three places from the bottom last season. We have a young and dynamic Management team and this season we are targeting a minimum of a mid table finish.

On the playing side, Phones were Gloucestershire County League Champions in 2016/17, Suburban Premier League Champions three times, the Premier Div 2 winners twice, and Bosley Cup Winners four times.

We also won the Gloucester Junior Cup in 1975, and were Finalists in the Gloucestershire Senior Amateur Cup in 2012.
