Good evening everyone,

Tonight, we offer a very warm welcome to the players, officials & supporters of visitors Ilfracombe Town Football Club & our match officials too. We hope they all enjoy their brief stay in the village and have a safe journey home too!

The weather has really hit the fixture schedule hard this month with dozens of fixtures called off due to waterlogged or frozen pitches. We’ve only played once in the last month or so, a disappointing 3-0 defeat at Radstock Town so we’re hoping the lads are back on it again this afternoon. Tonight’s fixture will be a difficult one as all games are against sides from the Premier Division but it is the Cup and there bound to be a shock or two somewhere!

Tonight’s game kicks off a run of three successive home games as we also host AEK Boco on Saturday before then welcoming Bristol Telephones to Lake View a week tonight.

Can we close by wishing everyone reading a very Happy New Year & a prosperous 2023. As always, thank you for your support. Enjoy the game!

Bishop Sutton Club History

The club was re-formed in 1977 with just an U15 team playing in the Weston-superMare Sunday League and then progressing in successive seasons to the Bristol and Avon League U16s and the second and first divisions before being admitted into the Somerset Senior League for the 1981-82 season.

The next ten years were spent climbing through the four divisions before being voted into the Western League for season 1991-92. The First Division was won in 1997-98 and then followed seventeen successive seasons in the Premier Division, the highlight being winning the Premier title in 2012-13.

Unfortunately our ground grading did not permit progression to the Southern League and all the team management and players then left the club. Relegation from the Premier followed at the end of season 2014-15 and we have experienced mixed fortunes in the First Division since then.

For the season 2020-21 Jon Toy came in as manager but unfortunately we were only able to play 10 games before the season was curtailed due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Having retained a lot of last season’s squad and added a couple of new players, we finished in mid table in season 2021/22.

A big thank you....

... to all our sponsors....

ILFRACOMBE TOWN AFC

Ilfracombe football club was formed in November 1902 and played local opposition teams until the formation of the North Devon League in 1904, in which Combe became one of the founder members. The present name of Ilfracombe Town was adopted in 1920, the club contested the East Devon League remaining there for many years.

The present ground of Marlborough Park was acquired in 1923 & laid out for competitive football in 1924/25 season. In 1949 Western League football was applied for & the club was admitted entry into division 3 for the season 1949/50, winning promotion as runner up at the end of that year. During the 1952/53 season the clubs finest FA Cup run was experienced by the only Division 2 team to reach the fourth qualifying round where Llanelli was the venue and the result was 1-0 in favour of the Welshmen in front of an 8500 gate.

Promotion to Division 1 was also achieved at the end of the 52/53 season but after two years, relegation was followed by poor results and poor support ultimately resulting in withdrawal from the league by the 1958/59 season.

During the 60s and 70s North Devon League football was again contested and during the early 80s, after some very encouraging seasons it was decided to re-apply for Western League football and re -entry was accepted from the 1984/85 season.

Since rejoining the Western League the club contested Division 1 for many seasons and promotion was eventually achieved to the Premier Division at the end of the 2006/07 season & Step 5 football was maintained with the winning of the Les Phillips Challenge Cup in 2010/11 season, after 30 years of membership the club decided to leave the Western League at the end of the 2012/13 season.

North Devon League football was once again contested with the first team in the Premier Division and the Reserves in the Senior Division and the 3rd Team in Intermediate 1, at the end of the 2016/17 season all 3 teams won promotion and with the Ladies team achieving promotion a very successful season was enjoyed.

The 2017/18 season Combe joined the South West Peninsula East Division, and after a couple of good seasons the team was going very well when the season was curtailed because of COVID-19, they were moved up into the Western League Premier Division for the 2021/22 season when the Non League system was re-organised.

Ilfracombe’s ground has one of the most picturesque backdrops in the Toolstation Western League as the image below shows.

Marlborough Park, Ilfracombe’s ground, is situated on top of a hill overlooking the Bristol Channel and the club will celebrate a hundred years of playing there in two seasons time.
