Good afternoon everyone,

Today, we offer a very warm welcome to the players, officials & supporters of visitors Odd Down Football Club & our match officials too. We hope they all enjoy their brief stay in the village and have a safe journey home too!

Well after almost a month without a game, today represents our sixth game in nineteen days as local football returns to normality and catches up with its fixtures. A win against Bishop’s Lydeard and draws against Hallen & Warminster have kept the points tally ticking along but we also exited the Les Phillips Cup down at Ilfracombe after being two goals up and Frome Town triumphed here in the Somerset Premier Cup last time out here.

Several of the postponed January fixtures have been rearranged and are now updated in our fixture list on page 27 of the programme. Finally, enjoy the game and as always, thank you for your support!

Bishop Sutton Club History

The club was re-formed in 1977 with just an U15 team playing in the Weston-superMare Sunday League and then progressing in successive seasons to the Bristol and Avon League U16s and the second and first divisions before being admitted into the Somerset Senior League for the 1981-82 season.

The next ten years were spent climbing through the four divisions before being voted into the Western League for season 1991-92. The First Division was won in 1997-98 and then followed seventeen successive seasons in the Premier Division, the highlight being winning the Premier title in 2012-13.

Unfortunately our ground grading did not permit progression to the Southern League and all the team management and players then left the club. Relegation from the Premier followed at the end of season 2014-15 and we have experienced mixed fortunes in the First Division since then.

For the season 2020-21 Jon Toy came in as manager but unfortunately we were only able to play 10 games before the season was curtailed due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Having retained a lot of last season’s squad and added a couple of new players, we finished in mid table in season 2021/22.

A big thank you....

... to all our sponsors....

... from Bishop Sutton F.C.

Non-League Footballers Mental Health Championed by Bath Mind and the Toolstation Western League

The Toolstation Western League are working with Bath Mind to pilot a mental health partnership supporting the football family and players in particular. The six Western League sides located in Bath and North East Somerset have been offered specially created posters, promoting mental health support services designed to help younger people, which can be located into their home and away changing rooms.

Research conducted by the Toolstation Western League earlier this season highlighted that around a quarter of players had considered seeking help with a mental health issue. The subject of mental health was first tackled by the Western League in March 2020, when they launched their Think of a Fan campaign.

Chairman of the Western League, John Pool, explained: “Think of a Fan was our way of remembering that for many fans, football is more than just a game. It’s an important release, a chance to meet friends, get out of the house and have some fun.

Many people are still working through the loneliness and anxiety caused by lockdown, but we must not forget that our players are no different. They are as important to us as any members of our football family and this important partnership with Bath Mind is our way of supporting them.”

As well as changing room posters, Bath Mind have provided leaflets for fans, as well as programme adverts, highlighting the variety of support services they provide. If successful, this initial pilot will be extended by the Western League to cover all 40 Clubs across the South West of England, from Cornwall to Wiltshire.

Hannah Roper, Director of Business Development at Bath Mind, said: “We at Bath Mind are thrilled to be working in partnership with The Toolstation Western League, to support and promote positive mental health for the football community. Throughout the pandemic Bath Mind has been fighting an epidemic of mental ill-health. We have increased our services to meet the growing needs of our community, and help reduce pressure on NHS services.

Through this pilot we hope to encourage everyone to talk about their mental health, seek help at an early stage and reduce the stigma associated with mental ill-health. As a local, independent charity, Bath Mind relies heavily on local fundraising to keep our services going, therefore we are grateful to The Toolstation Western League and their fans for their fundraising efforts.”

ODD DOWN A.F.C

Odd Down was founded in 1901 by Fred Weaver and brothers Walt and Stan Noad. Then a selfcontained village on the outskirts of Bath in Somerset, played in the Bath and District Football League. In 1920 Odd Down won the Bath City Knockout Cup, but in all its playing years the club has had little success in winning cups.

Odd Down FC spent their formative years on pitches at Stirtingale Farm and at the Quarry Ground, before moving to Combe Hay Lane in the 1930s. The club was finally able to purchase the ground in 1952 and it was renamed in memory of long-serving former President Lew Hill.

During the 1920s the club played in the Wiltshire Football League, but prior to World War II had graduated to playing in the Somerset Senior League. Re-grouping after the war, Odd Down started off again in the Somerset Senior League and in the 1946–47 season finished as runners-up to Somerton. They also won the Mid-Somerset Football League that season, a league formed to make up for the shortage of Somerset Senior League fixtures at that time.

Following a bad report into the facilities at Odd Down the club were expelled from the Somerset Senior League, whereupon an application to join the Wiltshire Football League was accepted. A few years later the Wiltshire League voiced disapproval of Somerset-based teams competing in their league and Odd Down found themselves re-admitted to the Somerset Senior League.

From 1967 to 1972 the club formed a steering committee which worked hard to provide a social club, eventually opening one on 5 April 1972. The hard work paid off as Odd Down gained admittance to the Western Football League for the start of the 1977–78 season.

However, it was to be season 1991–92 before the club won its first major honour, lifting the Somerset Senior Cup, and further success was to come the following season as the club won promotion to the Western League Premier Division, finishing as the 1992–93 Division One Champions.

In their centenary year of 2001 Odd Down reached the final of the Somerset Premier Cup for the first time, losing 1–0 to Southern League side Clevedon Town. The feat was repeated in 2004, this time going down 5–0 to Yeovil Town at the club’s Huish Park home.

They remained in the Premier Division until relegation to Division One in 2008, but were then promoted back to the Premier Division. Then in season 2015/16 Odd Down became Premier Division Champions and remained in the Premier Division until 2020/21 season.
