“THE LAKE VIEW”
Official matchday programme of Bishop Sutton F.C.
Toolstation Western League Division One
Portishead Town
Saturday 16th September 2023 3.00pm
Good afternoon everyone,
Welcome back to Lakeview for today’s Toolstation Western League Division one fixture with Portishead Town FC. We offer a warm welcome as usual to their supporters & officials along with the three match officials too, hoping they have a safe journey home.
It’s safe to say that Portishead have had a great start to the season. Despite many people backing the likes of Brislington & Bitton for promotion, today’s visitors are ahead of both of them; in fact, they sit top by four points! They also have the League’s lethal top scorer in Ethan Feltham so today can be filed under the heading “toughie”.
Whilst our search for that elusive first win continues, we would like to thank you for your support, it means a lot to the lads as they battle each week. Enjoy the game!
Bishop Sutton Club History
The club was re-formed in 1977 with just an U15 team playing in the Weston-superMare Sunday League and then progressing in successive seasons to the Bristol and Avon League U16s and the second and first divisions before being admitted into the Somerset Senior League for the 1981-82 season.
The next ten years were spent climbing through the four divisions before being voted into the Western League for season 1991-92. The First Division was won in 1997-98 and then followed seventeen successive seasons in the Premier Division, the highlight being winning the Premier title in 2012-13.
Unfortunately our ground grading did not permit progression to the Southern League and all the team management and players then left the club. Relegation from the Premier followed at the end of season 2014-15 and we have experienced mixed fortunes in the First Division since then.
For the season 2020-21 Jon Toy came in as manager but unfortunately we were only able to play 10 games before the season was curtailed due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Having retained a lot of last season’s squad and added a couple of new players, we finished in mid table in season 2021/22 followed by seventh place last season. Jon left in the summer and was replaced by Catalin Andrei and Steve Taylor.
A big thank you....

Focus on....
PORTISHEAD TOWN FC
Portishead were inaugurated early in the 1900’s by Molly Jukes, the daughter of a local Rector, who moved to Portishead in 1903. Always keen on sport, Molly formed a cricket side in 1910 and, two years later, a football team she called St, Peter’s Portishead. Initially there were two teams, a First X1 and Reserves.
A year later a junior side was formed. In 1915 Molly married the Rev.H.S.Briggs but her interest and devotion to ‘the lads’ didn’t waver and, despite the intervention of two world wars, she battled on as Chairman, Treasurer and Manager as well as playing in goal as often as she could.
In the early 1950’s Molly stepped down and Portishead AFC, as the Club were now known (following a name change in 1948) was left in the hands of Len Pickering and Eddie Clapson.
Following successive divisional championships in 1973 and 1974 the Club were accepted into the Somerset Senior League in 1975 and, a year later, moved from their original pitch where the present Health Centre now stands, to Bristol Road. As the result of the extra pitches available on the new ground, two new teams were formed incorporating the former Redcliffe Bay team, In 1995 a Colts side was formed and entered in the Weston & District League along with the third and fourth teams.
In 1991-92 Portishead reached the Somerset & Avon (South) FA Senior Cup Final where they lost 4-2 against Odd Down. In 1997 the First Team, again, reached the final, this time beating Bridgwater Reserves 2-0 at Paulton, In 1993/94, under the leadership of Terry Hale, the team won the Somerset Senior League Premier Division Championship.
They retained this title in 1994/95, made it a treble in 1995/96 and notched up their fourth Championship win at the end of the 1997/98 season, In May 2000, Shaun Hill’s side beat Radstock Town to win the Somerset Senior Cup for the second time.
Following major ground improvements and finishing the 2004/05 season as runners up in the Somerset County League the Club applied for election to the Western League and were duly promoted for the start of the 2005/06 campaign.
A big thank you to the sponsors of our reserve & under 18 teams...
