As well as changing room posters, Bath Mind have provided leaflets for fans, as well as programme adverts, highlighting the variety of support services they provide. If successful, this initial pilot will be extended by the Western League to cover all 40 Clubs across the South West of England, from Cornwall to Wiltshire.

Research conducted by the Toolstation Western League earlier this season highlighted that around a quarter of players had considered seeking help with a mental health issue. The subject of mental health was first tackled by the Western League in March 2020, when they launched their Think of a Fan campaign.

Non-League Footballers Mental Health Championed by Bath Mind and the Toolstation Western League

Throughout the pandemic Bath Mind has been fighting an epidemic of mental ill-health. We have increased our services to meet the growing needs of our community, and help reduce pressure on NHS services. Through this pilot we hope to encourage everyone to talk about their mental health, seek help at an early stage and reduce the stigma associated with mental ill-health. As a local, independent charity, Bath Mind relies heavily on local fundraising to keep our services going, therefore we are grateful to The Toolstation Western League and their fans for their fundraising efforts.”

Chairman of the Western League, John Pool, explained: “Think of a Fan was our way of remembering that for many fans, football is more than just a game. It’s an important release, a chance to meet friends, get out of the house and have some fun.

The Toolstation Western League are working with Bath Mind to pilot a mental health partnership supporting the football family and players in particular.

Many people are still working through the loneliness and anxiety caused by lockdown, but we must not forget that our players are no different. They are as important to us as any members of our football family and this important partnership with Bath Mind is our way of supporting them.”

Hannah Roper, Director of Business Development at Bath Mind, said: “We at Bath Mind are thrilled to be working in partnership with The Toolstation Western League, to support and promote positive mental health for the football community.

The six Western League sides located in Bath and North East Somerset have been offered specially created posters, promoting mental health support services designed to help younger people, which can be located into their home and away changing rooms.

Shirehampton FC began life as Kingsweston Star playing friendlies wherever and whenever games could be arranged. Then in 1952 the name was changed to Penpole United and the club was elected to play in the Church of England league, their ‘home’ pitch on the downs.

The first honours came in 1954/55 where Shirehampton were runners up of the Church of England League followed by District League Division V runners up. The Club had quite a number of supporters and followers amongst these were Mrs Campbell and Audrey Trueman who ran the tea hut at Shirehampton Recreation Ground and served piping hot tea to players and supporters on bitterly cold winter afternoons.

From these foundations in the 50’s followed the Club’s rise to Senior Football in the 60’s when it achieved promotion nearly every season spearheaded by players such as Paul and Barry England, Kelvin and Alec Gordon, John Helson, Dave Carey, Dave hicks and Alan Bennett.

Then in the 70’s came one of the most successful periods in the Clubs history under manager Paul England and later John Watkins – success in the Premier Combination and the GFA and Pratton AmongCups. the players from that period where Bob Morgan scorer of many goals, Mike Wiltshire, Steve and Graham Brunsdon, Andy Kerr, Ray Parkin, Les Vincent, Stuart Claridge, Pete Hutton, Phil Palmer, Nick Price, Pete McCall, Hugh Nethercott and in the late 70’s of course Mickey Barratt.

Shirehampton FC as it is now called was formed by several local lads. Among the stalwarts of those early days were founder members Peter Campbell (Goalkeeper), his brother Ted (the Club Secretary), Bob Bolwell, Jimmy Hudd and his brother John, Ted Trueman, Jim Pepper and Max TheBrunsdon.firstever

In 1954 the team moved to its present pitch at Penpole Lane and the team became Shirehampton Sports. By this time the team were competing in the Bristol and District League and later in the early 70’s dropping the Sports from their title.

In 1953 the team moved closer to their home of Shirehampton and started playing at the Lamplighters Playing Field on the banks of the Avon in Shirehampton. Highlights of these times were bruising local derby clashes against St George Easton and Gordano where the opposition and large amounts of Supporters would arrive on the near by Pill Shirehampton ferry.

League Game was a bit of a disaster losing 3 1 to Tickenham United with Shirehampton fielding only 9 players. More players joined in the following Seasons including Keith Ellison, John Coleman whose father Fred was Chairman, Cederick and Peter Rich, Rogers Mills and prolific goal scorer John Helson. Other early members were Bill Shayler, Joe Emery, Graham Miles, Charlie Warlock followed later by Alec Gordon, Mike Scrag and Dave Carey.

FC

Once again success came back in the 2005 2006 season where the first team won the Somerset County Division 1 title beating Frome Town Reserves on the final game of the season at Frome to pip the hosts to the title and the Third team beating Hallen B in the GFA minor cup and finishing runners up in Division 4 of the Bristol & District League.

FC

In the early 80’s Shirehampton FC were prevented from progressing into the County League football by bureaucracy and inter club politics. So to achieve their senior football ambitions they applied to the Somerset Senior league and were accepted into Division 1. Under the guidance of John Watkins they achieved promotion to the premier division. Subsequent seasons saw a precession of managers, resulting in a very unsettled period. Stability came in the 90’s in the shape of Pete McCall who had been a player with the club in the 70’s. During his 10 year reign he achieved League cup winners and then probably the greatest achievement in the clubs history the Somerset Senior Premier division winners in 1999-200 seaThisson. was followed up in the 200 2001 season where we finished as Somerset Senior runners up, building his successful team with local talent and youngsters brought through from youth football. At one time Pete’s side boasted no fewer than 4 pairs of brothers during the 1997-1998 season! Unfortunately during this successful period, Shirehampton FC’s progression was prevented by League ground grading, and our Penpole Lane facilities were deemed not to be at the standard to support Western (Screwfix) League status. Following this decision Pete McCall left the club to manage at a higher level and the club began another period of transition. This culminated in relegation from the Somerset County Premier Division for the first team and relegation from the Bristol Premier Combination for the Reserves in the 2001 2002 season.

Following the resignation of Mike Wiltshire as chairman after 15years at the helm to start a new bar in Holland, the chairman’s position was briefly filled by Graham Brunsdon who had been the club secretary for 10 years previously and then handed over to Pete McCall who was to return to the club again and take on the Chairman’s role completing a remarkable player / manager/ chairman treble.

The recruitment of John Gazzard as club secretary and other new and old members strengthened the off field activities with new railings being erected on the cricket side of the pitch and new portable goal posts and storage purchased in 2004. On the field Graham Smith returned to the club where he was a player under Pete McCall to manage the first team, Mike Collier and who had been Pete’s assistant in the 90’s and Luke Harding returned to manage the Reserves and Crag Damone was recruited to manage the third team.
