Good evening everyone,

Tonight, we offer a very warm welcome to the players, officials & supporters of visitors Wells City Football Club & our match officials too. We hope they all enjoy their brief stay in the village and have a safe journey home too!

Our visitors are enjoying a spectacularly good season and sit in third place just six points off top spot currently held by Brislington but with two games in hand. Not far from here tonight, Brislington are at Nailsea & Tickenham as top meets second so all three clubs will have an ear out for the latest scores this evening.

For ourselves, the lads have reacted well to the disappointing defeat to Shirehampton and have recorded four straight wins lifting us to the edge of the top six but tonight will obviously prove a stern test.

Thanks for your support and enjoy the game.

Bishop Sutton Club History

The club was re-formed in 1977 with just an U15 team playing in the Weston-superMare Sunday League and then progressing in successive seasons to the Bristol and Avon League U16s and the second and first divisions before being admitted into the Somerset Senior League for the 1981-82 season.

The next ten years were spent climbing through the four divisions before being voted into the Western League for season 1991-92. The First Division was won in 1997-98 and then followed seventeen successive seasons in the Premier Division, the highlight being winning the Premier title in 2012-13.

Unfortunately our ground grading did not permit progression to the Southern League and all the team management and players then left the club. Relegation from the Premier followed at the end of season 2014-15 and we have experienced mixed fortunes in the First Division since then.

For the season 2020-21 Jon Toy came in as manager but unfortunately we were only able to play 10 games before the season was curtailed due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Having retained a lot of last season’s squad and added a couple of new players, we finished in mid table in season 2021/22.

A big thank you....

... to all our sponsors....

... from Bishop Sutton F.C.

Non-League Footballers Mental Health Championed by Bath Mind and the Toolstation Western League

The Toolstation Western League are working with Bath Mind to pilot a mental health partnership supporting the football family and players in particular. The six Western League sides located in Bath and North East Somerset have been offered specially created posters, promoting mental health support services designed to help younger people, which can be located into their home and away changing rooms.

Research conducted by the Toolstation Western League earlier this season highlighted that around a quarter of players had considered seeking help with a mental health issue. The subject of mental health was first tackled by the Western League in March 2020, when they launched their Think of a Fan campaign.

Chairman of the Western League, John Pool, explained: “Think of a Fan was our way of remembering that for many fans, football is more than just a game. It’s an important release, a chance to meet friends, get out of the house and have some fun.

Many people are still working through the loneliness and anxiety caused by lockdown, but we must not forget that our players are no different. They are as important to us as any members of our football family and this important partnership with Bath Mind is our way of supporting them.”

As well as changing room posters, Bath Mind have provided leaflets for fans, as well as programme adverts, highlighting the variety of support services they provide. If successful, this initial pilot will be extended by the Western League to cover all 40 Clubs across the South West of England, from Cornwall to Wiltshire.

Hannah Roper, Director of Business Development at Bath Mind, said: “We at Bath Mind are thrilled to be working in partnership with The Toolstation Western League, to support and promote positive mental health for the football community. Throughout the pandemic Bath Mind has been fighting an epidemic of mental ill-health. We have increased our services to meet the growing needs of our community, and help reduce pressure on NHS services.

Through this pilot we hope to encourage everyone to talk about their mental health, seek help at an early stage and reduce the stigma associated with mental ill-health. As a local, independent charity, Bath Mind relies heavily on local fundraising to keep our services going, therefore we are grateful to The Toolstation Western League and their fans for their fundraising efforts.”

WELLS CITY FC

Wells City Football Club was founded on May 27th 1890 when a meeting was held in the Star Hotel in Wells. Success was immediate winning the first ever Somerset league title a feat repeated the following year.

In 1892/93 Wells entered the Bristol & District league, the forbearer of today’s Toolstation Western League of which Wells is a founder member. It was recorded that it was a Wells player who scored the first ever goal on the opening day of the season in a 2-0 victory Vs Mangotsfield.

In 1893/4 Wells re-joined the Somerset Senior league as well as moving to their present location at Rowdens Road. Wells were invited back into the Western League in1928/29 and competed in both the Somerset and Western leagues eventually leaving the county league in 1931. After the war years Wells competed in Div. 1of the Western league eventually winning being crowned champions in 1949/50 pipping Poole Town on goal difference.

Success became more difficult in the following years and Wells City re-joined the Somerset Senior League in 1960-61 with the Reserves competing in the Mid-Somerset Football League. The club finished very much mid –table until 1965-66 when they were third behind Street and Welton Rovers Reserves. They were Runners-Up behind Paulton Rovers in 1971-82.

Between 1977 and 1998 Wells suffered from the yo-yo effect, promotion to the Premier division one year, relegation the next. It wasn’t until the 1999/2000 season that Wells once again cemented themselves in the County’s premier division.

Wells City became Somerset Senior Cup champions in 2006-07 season defeating Burnham on Sea at Weston super Mare’s Woodspring Stadium 2-1.

After an absence of nearly fifty years, Wells City returned to the Western League First Division in 2008-09 with a mid table finish.

WELLS CITY FC

Wells City was crowned Toolstation Western League Division One Champions at the end of 2009-10 season. In 2011 Wells reached the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Cup with a home tie versus Woking FC with the visitors coming away comfortable winners. That was to be the highlight for Wells as after only a brief spell of 3 seasons in the Premier division found them relegated back into Division 1 in 2012-13.

A period of rebuilding was needed and a few seasons in the lower mid table positions followed. A change in direction late 2014 has seen a gradual change in fortunes resulting in Wells having their most successful season to date; gaining promotion back to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division and becoming Champions of Somerset beating Taunton Town, Frome Town, Weston S Mare and a thrilling 2–1 victory over Larkhall Athletic in the final to lift the Somerset Premier Cup for the first time in the clubs history. This success was yet again short lived, as after only two seasons in the Premier Division, Wells were again relegated to Division One.
