Welcome to Heathspeak, here we hope to keep you up to date with all that is going on in and around the club. First of all, it is great to be able to welcome supporters back and we hope to give you something to cheer in the coming months. If you could adhere to the social distancing rules and help the club to keep everyone safe we would be grateful of your cooperation. It is always nice to welcome the Chipping Sodbury supporters but today we hope you don’t have too much to cheer about. Hope you have a safe trip home this afternoon after the game. Well on the football front, we had an enforced fortnight’s break from action after a few members of the club went down with the dreaded COVID. We trust they are all fully recovered now and let’s all hope that is the first and last time the virus affects this club! Last weekend, we made the long trip down to Plymouth Parkway to take on the Premier Division’s runaway league leaders. It wasn’t the ideal way to return to the football but the lads gave everything on the day and other teams will be beat by more than the three we lost by. We then took on Odd Down on Tuesday night and came away with a deserved 3-0 victory despite playing more than an hour with a sub keeper, Scott Robson. Sometimes, it just seems to be your night and again the lads showed battling qualities to come away with a great result. A word on the fundraising efforts for the replacement of Terry Green’s bench that was so sadly destroyed by fire recently. We will be replacing Terry`s bench very shortly with a metal bench which has been requested by the family; we would like to thank individuals & the local football community for their fantastic support. The fund has now closed and as previously stated any remaining funds from the fund after the purchase of the bench will be split between two charities on of which is the Cystic Fibrosis charity that Stoner from Footy Review supports so well and the other will be announced soon. Enjoy the game.

Vice report Welcome to all supporters and afficionados from Chipping Sodbury, welcome to Springfield today.

It’s been a peculiar couple of weeks, we sure won’t be the last club closed down for this damned virus but as the clubs COVID officer I hope that you all appreciate how important it is to follow the guidelines set out for you when you visit us at this club. Now on from COVID, no more about that today. Coming back from an enforced suspension and finding that we only have 9 players available three days before facing Plymouth Parkway might have raised some ‘concerns’, however the players brought in by the management in the intervening couple of days before the game did the club proud. Lots more full strength teams will go to Plymouth and lose more heavily than we did and thank you to Michael ‘Jonathan Pearce’ Easlick for a fantastic commentary throughout the whole game, commentating for the club and also out-shouting the entire rest of the crowd all on his own. Odd Down came soon afterwards, losing our goalkeeper after 26 minutes might have raised some concerns but a marvellous team effort and a first goal for the first team, on debut’ from Brae Williams, the first player to come up from the reserve team in a number of years, well done young man you did us proud! This is a grand club we have here, sometimes a little rough around the edges and it sometimes looks like we are going to fly apart at the seams but we do keep going forward, 126 years and counting.. One Club, One Cadbury Heath. Enjoy the game

Introducing, again...

The views, thoughts, and opinions expressed in the text belong solely to the author, and not necessarily express the views of Cadbury Heath F.C.

This week, one of our longest journeys of the season away to league leaders Plymouth Parkway. They play at Bolitho Park the ground has two seated areas and covered standing areas outside the new clubhouse and down one side. The regular ground capacity is 3,500 but of course due to COVID it's only 300 at the moment and to watch the 'Mighty Heath' it was a sell-out. My journey to Plymouth started on Thursday when I caught the ever reliable No. 42 bus @ 10:42 to town. There I caught the 'Falcon' coach service to Plymouth. It is quite a journey stopping at Bristol Airport and every village and hamlet between Bristol and Plymouth but at £16.50 return you can't complain. I arrived in a sunny Plymouth around 4pm and caught a local bus across the River Tamar to Saltash where my sister lives and I had planned to stay for a couple of days. It was a great pity my sister was under the weather (NOT COVID I MUST SAY!) during my stay. So no pubs! I spent a couple of quiet days visiting the chemist for prescriptions and getting groceries for my ailing sister. I must admit I did buy a crate of Brewdog Punk IPA for myself, just to keep me going. So matchday, Saturday, I was woken up to torrential rain and strong winds, was the game going to be on? I checked on Twitter, all OK. So at one o'clock It was a two bus trip across the Tamar Bridge to Manadon, the district of Plymouth where Bolitho Park resides. I arrived at the ground after a short ten minute walk in relentless rain to be met at the ticket booth with the bad news... NO PROGRAMME, they gave me the old baloney that the FA have told them to put it online, who wants an online football programme? It was their first black mark of the day. So it was off to the clubhouse which was extremely busy and very well stewarded for COVID. A young lady met me at the door and escorted me to a table. There I met a couple of Manchester United fans (Premier League’s loss, Western League’s gain). When you wanted a drink you put a green card up on your table and a waitress came and took your order, all keg so I played safe with a couple pints of Stella Artois. After a bit of investigation I was able to get hold of a team sheet, I only recognised 3 or 4 of the names owing to a player shortage due to: injuries, suspensions, scared of COVID and Birthday parties! But luckily Heath's management team were able to make six new signings in the previous couple days. Apparently three from Chippenham Town, one from Odd Down and I think one from Mangotsfield. The capacity crowd gave a big welcome to both teams as they made their way onto the pitch, I was trying to put names to our players and Simon McElroy had been made captain for the day.

The game was dominated by the muddy, soaking wet pitch but Heath put up a good fight and were unlucky not to go ahead early on. It lasted 20 minutes when Parkway scored a good opener followed by and even better goal just minutes later. Shortly before half time Simon McElroy pulled one back from the penalty spot after being upended by one of Parkway's defenders. 2-1 at half time, I was very happy with that score line. Then I discovered there were no pasties, no pasties at a football match in Plymouth, what is the world coming too??? That was Parkway's second black mark! The third was the unfriendliness of the locals, they didn't like that Heath put up such a good hard fight and if the 'rub of the green' had gone our way maybe we could have sneaked a draw or maybe a, well maybe not a win. 4-1 at full time, a pretty respectable result against the odds on favourites to win promotion from the Western League and better than our previous two visits of 0-5 and 1-7. So it was back into the extremely well COVID stewarded clubhouse and a post match pint of Stella Artois. Cadbury Heath supporters were a bit thin on the ground the only person I met was Alan Jones our goalkeeper Ollie's Dad. So I didn't hang around very long in the packed clubhouse and ventured back out into the unabating torrential rain to catch a bus into the centre of Plymouth and catch the 'Falcon' coach service back to Bristol. Eventually after a fight to get a seat on a bus in the centre of Bristol due to COVID limits I arrived home at half past eleven, phew... quite a day. Have a great game everybody and COME ON THE EEEEF!

It’s all about‌.

Chipping Sodbury Town

In the summer of 1959 Cliff Phelps decided it was time football association was brought back to the town. It had been six long years since the boys of the town had donned the Blue & White of Sodbury in the Western League. After several meetings at The Bell Inn (Now Brooks Bar & Kitchen) the new club was formed. Major L.M.Harris was President, Mr. E Purbrick Chairman, Mr. C Phelps Vice Chairman, Club Captain Dennis Greenaway and Youth Captain Michael Boulton. In the initial 1959/60 season they entered a senior team into The Dursley & Wotton League and a team into the Youth Section. The following season Sodbury joined the Bristol and District League and throughout the 60's remained in Division 3. The 1970's began with relegation, when we finished bottom of Division 3 and the slump continued in 1971/72 Season when finishing bottom of Division 4. The Mid 70's saw a few changes and the ground work of the team today. Mike Fox became player Manager and 'The Sods' began a Sunday Side. In the 1976/77 Season, Sodbury finished third in Division 5 and gained promotion. The 1978/79 Season saw us go one better and finished runners-up of Division 4. To finish the decade off and celebrate twenty years of the club's rebirth, we won the Championship of Division 3 in 1979/80. The 1980's began were the 70's left off and a fourth place finish gave Sodbury promotion to Bristol and District Division 1. 1981/82 saw the rebirth of our Reserve side and by the end of the season, the 1st's had gained promotion to the Senior Division. From Division 5, to the Senior League in six seasons. The first season in the Senior division was mid-table finish and the end of the season saw Mike Fox's testimonial and an Ashton Gate appearance against Mangotsfield united. The following season we finished third. After finishing 15th in 1985/86 we were relegated to Division 1, where we remained until finishing runners up in 1988/89. The 1990's kicked off with a third place finish and promotion to the Bristol Premier Combination Div 1. in 1990/91. The early 90's saw a new clubhouse and changing rooms built with Players and Committee members contributing their trades. A fourth place finish and the winning of the Premier cup in 1992/93 was the clubs best season so far. The Sods remained in Division 1 until the end of the nineties, when they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 1999/00 Season. The 2000's and after 3 seasons in the Premier, the Sods were relegated at the end of 2001/02 season. A new manager and new era began in 2002/03. Les Underdown and his Assistant Jeff Clark both explayers with the club took over the reins. A mid table finish in their first season, saw Les leave and left Jeff in the hot seat. The following season saw another mid-table finish and the Reserves become Champions with the exciting players now in the squad. 2004/05 ended in a disappointing third place but the club now had a third team as well. The following season, the previous year was forgotten when the club won the Championship and promoted back to the Premier division. A mid table finish in the Premier division and the other 2 teams both winning promotion was a good season in 2006/07.

It’s all about….

Chipping Sodbury Town

2007/08 became the clubs most successful season, when the first's won the Championship of the Premier and the reserves Champions of Bristol & District Division One. The first season and a change of manager in the Gloucestershire county league and the team finished bottom of the league, only winning 5 games. Even though the club finished bottom, they were not relegated. Mark Stenner was appointed manager and he started the steady march up the County league. The 2010's has produced the club's most successful time in their history. Mark Stenner had taken the team to a third place finish in the County league in 2010/11. After his departure early the following season, Scott Gibson took over. A disappointing bottom place finish was followed by two seasons of rebuilding and climbing the league. Karl Reese was appointed new manager at the beginning of 2014/15 season and in his first season had promoted the club from the County League to the dizzy heights of Western League football with a third place finish. Not a bad start for the new gaffer but with some new faces and playing great football, we went one better the following season and won the Western League Division 1 Championship. 2016/17 and the Western League Premier Division was tough but a very creditable 13th position and competing in the F.A.Vase was our most successful season so far. 2017/18 was going to be a massive mountain to climb. Karl had left the club and also half the first team had departed to pastures new. Enter Neil Simons our new gaffer, a season in the Western League to take on with half a team and to make things a little more difficult, your first game is the clubs first ever game in the F.A.Cup. The season ended with a 13th place finish, an FA Cup victory and a quarter final place in the GFA Challenge trophy. Early in the 2018/19 Season Neil decided to leave the club and shortly afterwards we appointed manager Joe White and his assistant Steve. At the end of the season under his leadership, the club had finished 10th in the Western League and had the best run in the FA cup in the clubs history. The club were successful in their appeal against the Hellenic League, sideways move by the F.A. So 2019/20 season was in the Western League Premier. The uncertainty of which League we would be playing in, unsettled the players and so several departed the Club before a ball was kicked in that season. Three weeks before the season started the club also lost our Manager and his Assistant. Justin Bishop & Scott Gibson took control of the 1st team as Caretaker management and remained there until the League came to an abrupt halt. The F.A. announced on 26th March 2020 that the Step 1-7 game and all grassroots football leagues and competition under its umbrella had ended, as a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic. All results for the season would be expunged. The 2020’s begin with Jeff Roberts and his team, Drew, Sean & Nick steering the 1st Team.

The

of the Heathens….part one!

The Club was first established in 1894 by Cadbury Heath Adult School (later to be known as Cadbury Heath Primary School) when Cadbury Heath was just a little narrow, one-street village, way outside the boundaries of Bristol. Our first pitch was situated at Mill Lane, changing in the Social Club and heating up water for tin baths. With a break for the War years, and the transferring to what is now Coronation Park, we progressed from the Bristol & District League to Division Two of the Bristol Premier Combination, and then to Division One in 1961, after winning the GFA Junior Cup in 1950. In the 60’s the team (only a first team then) built their own baths at the Social Club. This period of success coincided with the renting of our present ground – Springfield – for £10 per annum from a local farmer and President Jim Warner. This was then an open pasture land with cows, a rope had to be put around the playing area. It had no Electricity Water or Drainage. The tea bar was a garden shed. The offer to purchase for £250 was short-sighted declined, as the field was later sold as part of major development land and only intense lobbying led by the then Chairman, Mike Packer persuaded the Council to allocate Springfield as part of Public Open Space leased to the Football Club for dual use. This has meant that we have not been entirely masters of our own destiny. Even so, Gloucestershire county League championship in 1971-72, 1972-73, 73 74 and runners up 74/75 at the same time winning the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1972/73 73/74 and 1974-75, under Ralph Miller’s Management. The success pushed the club into joining the Midland Combination after being turned down by the Western League due to the dressing rooms being situated too far from the pitch (what is now the Social Club bottle store). A stand was built for the requirement of the Midland Combination (with tea bar). After finishing fifth and reaching the quarter finals of the FA Vase with a crowd of 2,000 at Springfield, and more listening live on local Radio Bristol for the tie against Billericay Town from Essex, the Manager left after a disagreement with the committee, and took most of the players, to Cinderford Town. This shook the club to the core, we were relegated and had to drop two divisions to the Avon Premier Combination (we were founder members) there was no `Pyramid System’ in force. A slow recovery took place, half time rooms being built, then a terrapin to provide on-pitch dressing rooms, taking advantage of newly laid drains for the new houses, a water supply, and electricity for training floodlights. Elected back into the Gloucestershire County League in 1984 a reserve team was started in 1988 ran by John Clarke formed from CHYMCA the first team finished as runners-up in the County League in 1990. The managers in this period were Bob Williams, Dave Pitman, Les Allan, John Harris, Andy Stone, Keith Cottrell, Brian Knighton, Mike Ratcliffe, and Chris Stone. We celebrated our Centenary by winning the League Championship for the fifth time in 1994, under the consistent managership of Brian Knighton, and we continued to dominate the league again.

The

of the Heathens…. part two!

Continued improvement on and off the field saw new dressing rooms built on the ground in 1997, a youth academy started under Malcolm Knowlson and a new terrapin replaced the one for the youth section formed from an amalgamation with local youth football club, Grimsbury Rangers. After winning the Gloucestershire County League for a record sixth time, under the management of Andy Black, an application to join the Western League was again turned down due to the lack of a fence. Andy then left the club to join Bitton & Steve Plenty was appointed Manager along with Lee Knighton. After a public open meeting and a long battle with the Council, the fence was finally erected at a cost of £15,000 funded by Cadbury Heath Football Club. Steve and Lee’s first season in charge got runners up spot, of which consequently secured our election to the Toolstation Western League at long last! After two seasons in charge, Steve Plenty stood down due to family commitments and Lee Knighton took over the hot seat for a season and then the reigns were handed over to his assistant, Glenn Smart, who consolidated our position for four seasons. Lee Knighton took over as First Team Manager for his second spell and appointed Andy Weeks as his assistant in season 2005/6, also that year Steve Plenty became Chairman when Dave Smart stood down. After five years of planning tribulations Floodlights were successfully installed at the end of season 2008/2009 this being Phase one of Heaths redevelopment plan, being largely due to the efforts of Chairman Steve Plenty. The Heath and The Social Club went their separate ways in season 2011/12. Andy Black joined the club for his third spell in season 2010/11 appointing Glenn Smart as his assistant culminating in the first division championship and promotion to the Premier Div. in season 2011/12. Then followed two good seasons in the premier division with the last two seasons being a period of trying to rebuild the side after most of the original players either retiring or moving on to higher level football. Phase two, is in the planning stage which is for a new dressing room facility incorporating a new clubhouse & new 100 seat stand with a covered area for a further 100. During season 2015-2016 Roger Coke joined the club as coach. Season 2016-2017 started with a new first team coach Phillip Bater Ex Bristol Rovers and the introduction of a U18 side who will be playing in the Bristol & Glos U18 league. Mid season Rob Mallett joined the coaching staff to assist Andy Black. First team won the GFA Challenge Trophy beating Fairfield Town 4-3 0n penalties.

At the end of the season Andy Black resigned as manager and became director of football. Season 2017-2018, Rob Mallett was appointed first team manager; he was then succeeded by Andy Black returning.
