FROM THE CHAIRMAN Having what has felt like an eternity, it's great to be able to officially declare that ‘FOOTBALL IS BACK’. It's three months to the day that we played our last fixture of the 21/22 season, strangely enough away to our visitors today, Bridgwater United FC. The match was a closely contested semi-final of the Les Phillips Cup, however it wasn’t to be our day eventually losing 2-0. Bridgwater deservedly then went on to win the cup. On this the opening day of the 22/23 football season, may I welcome the players, officials and supporters of Bridgwater United FC back to Helston for a second time this year.. The closed season has seen a number of changes at Kellaway Park, no more so than the appointment of Matt Cusack as the Club’s new 1st team manager. Since accepting the role in early June, Matt has been extremely busy preparing for today and the challenges of the forthcoming season. Former 1st team manager Steve Massey has returned to his originally appointed position of Helston Athletic’s Director of Football. On behalf of the Club it's a warm welcome to Matt and a recorded thank you to Steve for his contribution of the past five years. In addition to Matt’s appointment it's great to be able to welcome a number of new playing faces to the club in readiness for the new season. These include Isaac Burdon, Jordan Copp, Tom Payne, Rikki Shepherd, Jamie Simmonds, Jude Tripconey, Freddie Walter and Nathaniel West. A warm welcome also goes out to Jaimie Osborne, the teams new physiotherapist. This afternoons referee is Darren Gay, supported by assistants George Pattison and Ken Swift. Like all visiting Kellaway Park today, we hope you each enjoy your visit. Finally may I take this opportunity to thank all those local businesses that have kindly agreed to sponsor Helston Athletic Football Club for the forthcoming season. Without your amazing and generous support the challenges of running a community football club would be virtually impossible. You’re such great people, thank you. Its great to be back, please be sure to enjoy your afternoon and as always, thank you for your support. Paul Hendy (Chairman)

Reece is an attacking full back that can operate on both sides of the pitch. He has an excellent delivery and has assisted multiple times & scored in the pre-season. Josh Storey (Capt). Josh has recently been appointed club captain. A ball playing centre back and an excellent leader on and off the pitch.

Jordan Bentley. Jordan came to the club last season and has excellent experience within the game having operated at higher levels. A dominant centre back who can mix up his game. Freddie Walters. Fred joined the club from neighbouring Wendron and has enjoyed a positive pre-season. He is comfortable in a range of defensive positions and can also offer a threat going forward. Harrison Jewell. Harrison came through the youth ranks at Helston and shows promise across many positions. His versatility is his strength and he can operate across the defence and in midfield. Stevie Colwell. Player Profiles...

Tyler Elliott. Tyler is another player that has operated at higher levels of football and has excellent technical quality to match a terrific work ethic. Expect to see him linking play in the final third. Rikki Shepherd. Rikki was a big summer signing for us. The ex-Millbrook man notched 23 goals from 29 appearances in the last campaign. Lightning quick, Rikki has scored 3 goals in the pre-season and will be looking to add many more. Kai Cornish. He is very good in the air and has scored a few goals in the pre-season. Jordan Copp. Jordan is one of the most technically gifted players the manager has worked with. He brings bags of experience and pedigree having operated at Step 2 with Weymouth. An attacking player of exceptional quality who can operate wide or centrally. Rocco Hill. Focus on.... BRIDGWATER UNITED BACKGROUND Early attempts to establish a senior association football club in the rugby stronghold of Bridgwater failed to attract supporters, were beset with financial woes and were thus short-lived. It was not until after the Second World War that solid foundations for a club were finally laid. A group of enthusiasts formed CROWN DYNAMO FC in 1946 based at a public house in St John Street. The team quickly gained a very substantial following and became a forerunner of BRIDGWATER TOWN AFC. The purchase of land off Bristol Road for a home ground [Castlefield], the backing of a large supporters’ organisation and the support of prominent local businessmen, who then became directors, enabled the club to flourish. Soon the club owned a portfolio of residential property and was able to offer a house, a job and a good part-time wage to prospective footballers. This enabled the club to attract many ex-Football League professionals and field strong, competitive teams, which enjoyed great success as one of the Western League’s leading sides. Two Western League championship mantles, cup final wins and thrilling runs in the FA Cup and FA Trophy were experienced throughout the 1960s, 70s and 80s. In 1982 Bridgwater Town AFC became members of the Southern League. However, It all came to an abrupt end in June 1984 when substantial debts forced the club into voluntary liquidation.

A NEW BEGINNING A new club, BRIDGWATER TOWN 1984 FC was quickly established by a band of loyal supporters: and from humble beginnings worked all the way back up from Somerset County League origins to attaining Southern League membership inside a twenty-three year time span. On the way the club enjoyed a hat-trick of Somerset County League titles, a Screwfix Western League Division 1 championship and two Les Philips Cup Final wins. As members of the Southern League they reached the Final of the League Cup (2009) and were beaten finalists in the promotion play-offs (2010) However after 2010 leaner times returned, eventually leading to relegation in 2017. Returning to Step 5 level once more, the club remains ambitious, with the aim of competing strongly for the title and regaining its previous status. The club’s ambitions received a massive boost during the early part of 2021 as it merged with Yeovil United FC to become BRIDGWATER UNITED FC. Now, with a new club status, ownership and business model, plans are at an advanced stage to make the club a real community asset - not just for the town of Bridgwater but for the whole of Somerset. Last season was a success clinching the Les Phillips Cup with a 1-0 victory over Cadbury Heath at Wells City FC along with a number of other cup wins for the Women’s squad and youth teams and the club is gearing up for the new season with the merger of the Western and SW Peninsula Leagues going ahead next year.

Focus on.... BRIDGWATER UNITED PLAYER PROFILES Dave Pearse: Hugely experienced, Dave returned to Bridgwater Town as joint player/ manager with Karl Baggaley in season 2017/18 and will be looking to build on the progress made in recent years. Karl Baggaley: Assistant Manager who has worked alongside Dave Pearse for many years. Jake Viney: Fantastic shot stopper and sweeper keeper. After suffering a serious injury which kept him out for a whole season in 2016/17, he has come back stronger than ever with a string of outstanding performances. Mark Armstrong: Captain of the club and a born leader, Mark is an experienced, hardworking, tough tackling midfielder, equally comfortable in central defence. Ryan Brereton: Ryan is an exciting and dynamic midfielder with a great left foot who joined from Bishops Lydeard. Mike Duffy: Mike has committed to the club once again and will be looking to establish his place in the starting line-up with high energy, combative performances.
