Kellaway Park, Clodgey Lane, Helston, Cornwall TR13 8PJ

Welcome to Kellaway Park, the home of ‘The Blues’ of Helston Athletic Football Club. The 22/23 season was without doubt the club’s most successful of recent times, if not that of any in the clubs one hundred and twenty seven year history. Whilst progressing further in The FA Cup than ever before in addition to completing a Cornwall Senior Cup and Western League Les Phillips Cup double exceeded expectations, an early FA Vase exit along with finishing sixth in the league has given room for yet further gains to be achieved. Away from the flagship the wider club triumphed in three additional county cup competitions whilst finishing as runners up in a further two. Several youth teams were also crowned league and / or league cup champions. Win or lose the club and town remain proud of everyone who represented Helston Athletic Football Club last season. As a club we continue to strive for continued improvement both on and off the field of play. Over the forthcoming months we hope the results of the dedication and hard work of those who give up so much of their time will continue to enhance your match day experience whether you are a player, an official or a spectator. Compliance has become ever more important to help ensure everybody enjoys their football in the safest of environments. Helston Athletic Football Club are therefore pleased to share that it was recently awarded an England Football Accredited Club 3* rating. The award reflects the club’s commitment to the future of football within our local community. As always, the club remains extremely grateful for the valuable contributions of the numerous organisations, businesses and volunteers who continue to support us. Without your individual support running a successful football club for all ages would be impossible – thank you. Finally, we hope you enjoy your visit to Kellaway Park today, so much so that you return very soon. Here’s to another successful year of footballing action and for all things Helston.

Good afternoon, It's a return to Isuzu FA Vase action this afternoon as we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Longlevens FC to Kellaway Park. Our visitors are no strangers to Cornwall having played Falmouth Town in the 2nd round of the competition back in 2019. It will be today's winners that progress to the 2nd round on this occasion. As well as our opponents, Helston welcome this afternoons match officials Nigel D'Arcy, Bryan Holden and David Green to Blues HQ. For the second time in as many weeks we have been saddened by the passing of somebody very much a part of our football club family. Having only revisited the club in recent weeks it was a shock to us all to hear of the loss of former club physio Martine Ede. Professional in her role at all times, Martine also enjoyed the social side of football, a tribute shared earlier this week commented ’she was one of the lads’. For those attending this afternoons match, we request that you respectfully join us in remembering Martine with a minutes silence prior to kick off. The clubs condolences go to husband Jerry, all family and friends at this sad time. Back to today, it gives me great pleasure to welcome the newly formed Helston Under 7 Hammers (pictured) as our match-day mascots this afternoon. Commencing training just four months ago the team is a mix of local boys and girls led by a group of passionate coaches and volunteers. The emphasis of both training sessions and matches are having fun and teamwork. The team and club extends its thanks to kit sponsors Chris Strike of RA Design and David Page from Nauti But Ice. We wish the Hammers every future success. Tomorrow Helston Women return to cup action as they travel to Bristol to take on AEK Boco in the third and final qualifying round of this seasons Women’s FA Cup. The winners of the match will receive £4,000 so there is plenty to play for. The very best of luck to all involved. The weekend doesn’t see the end of the latest round of cup action as on Tuesday we travel to Bickland Park, home of local rivals Falmouth Town, to commence our defence of The Western League Les Philips Cup. KO is 7:45pm and it is hoped that as many Blues supporters as possible will make the short trip for what is always a high profile and entertaining encounter. Next Saturday we again hit the road as we travel to Homers Heath to play Buckland Athletic. Whichever team you are supporting today please be sure to enjoy your afternoon and as always, thank you for your magnificent support. Paul Hendy (Chairman)

The Football Association Challenge Vase, usually referred to as the FA Vase, is an annual football competition for teams playing in Steps 5 and 6 of the English National League System. In the 2017 - 18 season 619 entrants were accepted, with two qualifying rounds preceding the six proper rounds, semi-finals (played over two legs) and final played at Wembley. The 2023 winners were Ascot who beat the previous year’s winners, Newport Pagnell Town, by a goal to nil. Until 1974, football players were either professionals or amateurs. Professionals were paid to play by their clubs, and the only cup competitions such clubs were allowed to enter were the FA Cup and, after 1969, for clubs outside the Football League, the FA Trophy. Amateurs, on the other hand, were not paid (at least not officially) by their clubs, and such clubs had their own cup competition, the FA Amateur Cup. In 1974, with many of the top amateur players receiving payment for playing, the Football Association abolished the distinction, scrapped the Amateur Cup and introduced the FA Vase for the majority of clubs who had previously played in the competition. Well over 200 clubs entered in the first season, 1974–75, when Hoddesdon Town beat Epsom & Ewell 2 - 1 in the final at Wembley Stadium in front of a crowd of 9,000. In recent years, entry to the FA Vase has been restricted to clubs in the ninth and lower tiers of the English football league system. Only five teams have won the FA Vase more than once. Whitley Bay are the only team to win the FA Vase three times in successive seasons, while Billericay town, Tiverton town and Halesowen Town have won back to back titles. Truro City are the only Cornish club to win the competition, in 2007 they came from behind to beat AFC Totton 3 -1 in front of 27,754 spectators.

FOCUS ON LONGLEVENS AFC The Club, in its current format, was founded in 1954. We initially played in the North Gloucestershire League, but currently we operate in the Uhlsport Hellenic League, the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League and the Stroud and District League. In 2011/12, Gloucester City Council created a new football facility and we were fortunate enough to be offered the tenancy, which enabled us to make the step-up to the Gloucestershire County League as our facilities at our Club HQ could not be converted to ‘make the grade’. At this point, we must give great credit to E. G. Carter and Company Limited, our major sponsors, because, without them, we could not have got Saw Mills up to the required standard and I am happy to say that they are still the major force for the improvements that we have subsequently made – so thank you “Carters”, as they are locally referred to! In recent years the Club has expanded massively, and we now run five male adult sides, a Ladies side and a Veterans team, our Junior Section covers sides from U8s to U11s, from where players transfer into our Youth Sections to give us continuous cover from U8s through to Veterans. Two seasons ago, we introduced a girls’ team and this section continues to expand – the one side quickly became three and at the start of this new season we will have six girls sides – the winning of the Euros last season created a surge in interest and all the indications are that this interest will continue to grow. We are now getting close to running forty sides in all and in truth, the biggest problem we now have is to provide pitches for all the teams. We are recognised as a Two Star FA Accredited Club, the system that has replaced the previously used Charter Standard ‘banner’. Special mention here to Dennis Barnsley who has done so much work in respect of the Youth Section and the Charter Standard, to our Chairman Mark Cornell and Treasurer Chris Trout for putting in so much work to make the expansion of the Junior/Youth Sections happen. We had spent more than forty years trying to reach the Gloucestershire County League, but amazingly, within three years we had passed through it and gained promotion to the Uhlsport Hellenic League, having won the County League in 2013-14 and once again we were indebted to Carters for helping us upgrade Saw Mills to the required standard. So, in 2014/15 we started another new phase for the Club, in Division One West of the Uhlsport Hellenic League and what a start! We won the Division at the first attempt, so after three consecutive titles and two consecutive promotions, we found ourselves in the Hellenic Premier Division and have consolidated our position in that Division, which is no mean feat given that the majority of sides we play have a history and an infrastructure that is superior to ours. The season before last we had our best ever experience in the FA Cup that culminated in us playing Gloucester City – a dream day out for the Club which will live long in the memory – but last season we were brought back to earth with exits from both the Cup and ...

FOCUS ON LONGLEVENS AFC Vase after just one game in each. We are extremely lucky that two of our previous Managers - Mark Moore and James French do a lot of work on the pitch and facilities at Saw Mills, along with Tom Boxhall and having assessed what is needed to upgrade the ground to a Step 4 standard, we have turned our thoughts as to how we finance the requirements – if there are any rich entrepreneurs reading this with a bob or two to spare – please make yourself known! Club stalwart, Craig ‘Spider’ Martin, will continue as First Team Manager, with Mike Palmer as Joint Manager – Mike joined us last season and hopefully we can build on the vision of the Club that he put together last season. Mike has had a varied experience before joining us – he has coached at Gloucester City, had two years with Green Bay in the United States and has also coached at Cheltenham Town, Forest Green Rovers and Tuffley Rovers (U18’s and Development). He already holds the UEFA B certificate and is now working towards his UEFA A – so he brought a wealth of knowledge to the Club. On the coaching staff we welcome ‘Buster’ Davies, previously with Stonehouse Town and we welcome back Kacey Johnstone, who stepped back last season, due to family and work commitments, but has re-joined us this season. Liam Chandler-Johnson, Tim Hall and Mark Davies, as physios, complete our line up in the dug-out. A quick mention to a major ‘signing’ this season – we welcomed Calum Newman to the Club and Calum brings a wealth of experience in administration, as well as being a Level 4 referee and a member of the Stroud and District League Committee. He has already taken over the reins as our FA, GFA, Hellenic and Northern Senior secretarial roles and – regardless of any incoming players - I already have him down as our best signing of the season! As ever, apologies to all those people at the Club who deserve a name-check – especially all of our volunteers who run the bar at our Social HQ – it isn’t possible to namecheck everyone, but sincere thanks to all of them. However, I do need to thank those who work behind the scenes at Saw Mills - Ash Baker (hospitality), Neville Martin (Gate), Sharon and Tara Martin (Refreshment Hut) our Chairman Mark Cornell, ex-player Paul Walsh as well as Mark Davies, Daryl Long and Lee Martin for their behind the scenes work and not forgetting Brad Martin and Kacey Johnstone for their work in bringing in sponsorship money to the Club. And finally thanks to our programme producer Amy Walker of Glos Booklets who composes it and Chris Bishop (ex-Chairman) of Perpetua Press whose company does the printing. Bill Davis - President

Player Profiles... Kyle MOORE (GK). Kyle joined us part way through the season from Plymouth Parkway and was part of the team that won back to back promotions. An excellent shot stopper and distributor of the ball, he will add great value to our new campaign. Jordan BENTLEY. Jordan enters his 3rd season with the club. He continues to be a dominant CB who can play within different formations. and was part of our cup double success in the previous campaign. Aaron BENTLEY. Aaron enters his 3rd season with the club. He is a technically efficient defender with attributes to play in other positions. Aaron has an excellent football pedigree and has operated at higher levels. Harrison JEWELL (Capt) An exceptional season last year, H put in many M.O.M performances and won 2 of our end of season awards. An influential CB who has also been made captain for this campaign. Callum O’BRIEN. A throwback to how defenders used to be, no nonsense and hard hitting. Lethal at set plays and can play on the deck as well. Deceptively quick over 10-15 metres. Tom MOXHAM. Excellent pedigree having completed a Plymouth Argyle scholarship followed by four years at the University of Pittsburgh. Expect to see Mox impacting games as a full back or a wing back with his excellent delivery. Dave BARKER. Has set the standard for right sided full backs/wing backs over the past five years. Barks regularly chips in with double figures each season, a remarkable stat given his position. He actually grabbed a 90th minute winner here for his former club Saltash last season. He will bring value at both ends of the pitch with added leadership qualities. Tom PAYNE. Payney had an exceptional campaign last season. He chipped in with 15 goals and 15 assists from midfield, and scored in the first of our two cup final triumphs last campaign. Baga MARIKO. Baga joined part way through this season. A young and very athletic defensive midfielder that gets that awkward toe in to thwart attacks. He was signed as we didn’t have this profile of a player so compliments the midfield well and gives us options.

Player Profiles... Jacob SMITH. The youngest of our summer signings. Played the most number of games for Torpoint last season as a base midfielder. Has worked with the manager before at Plymouth Parkway. Has put in some impressive performances in preseason and continues to adopt and excellent approach on the training ground. Stevie COLWELL. Stevie has operated at higher levels having previously played with Weymouth, Tiverton and more recently, Plymouth Parkway. A ball playing midfielder with exceptional technical and tactical quality. Tyler ELLIOTT. Ty is a versatile player that can operate in many positions within the team. Last season he was regularly impacting games from wider positions. He has a terrific work ethic and appetite for the game. Kai CORNISH. Kai has now completed his university studies and therefore feels like a new signing. An accomplished dribbler that can impacts games in the final third. We are hopeful it will be a big campaign for him. Sam CARTER. Cart’s season had lift off around September last campaign. He found himself amongst the goals and assists from an attacking midfield position. Extremely athletic, Carts will be looking to build on his successful campaign last time around. Jordan COPP. Jordan is one of the most technically gifted players the manager has worked with. He brings bags of experience and pedigree having operated at Step 2 with Weymouth. An attacking player of exceptional quality who can operate wide or centrally. He created 18 assists in the last campaign. Rikki SHEPHERD. Rikki is a lightning quick striker who finished top scorer last campaign with 26 goals. He proved a big game player scoring in both of our cup winning finals. We are expecting more big things this season. Rubin WILSON. Rubin formed the other half of our strike partnership last season and scored 24 goals in his first full men’s season. He scored the second goal in our second cup final triumph to cap off a fine campaign.

Jamie SIMMONDS. The manager honestly doesn’t know how this lad gets through each day! Aside from that, he is starting to flourish as a footballer in this environment and is more regularly impacting games in offensive positions. Jamie is one of the best technicians in the team and we are expecting big things from him this season. Curtis DAMERELL. Another manager described Curtis as ‘the complete number 9’. He was joint top scorer in the Western League last season. Curtis has had a slower start to the pre-season due to injury. However he is now well on the road to recovery and is getting better all the time on the training ground and in matches. Expect him to add huge value to the front line this season.
