Kellaway Park, Clodgey Lane, Helston, Cornwall TR13 8PJ

Welcome to Kellaway Park, the home of ‘The Blues’ of Helston Athletic Football Club.

The 22/23 season was without doubt the club’s most successful of recent times, if not that of any in the clubs one hundred and twenty seven year history.

Whilst progressing further in The FA Cup than ever before in addition to completing a Cornwall Senior Cup and Western League Les Phillips Cup double exceeded expectations, an early FA Vase exit along with finishing sixth in the league has given room for yet further gains to be achieved.

Away from the flagship the wider club triumphed in three additional county cup competitions whilst finishing as runners up in a further two. Several youth teams were also crowned league and / or league cup champions.

Win or lose the club and town remain proud of everyone who represented Helston Athletic Football Club last season.

As a club we continue to strive for continued improvement both on and off the field of play. Over the forthcoming months we hope the results of the dedication and hard work of those who give up so much of their time will continue to enhance your match day experience whether you are a player, an official or a spectator.

Compliance has become ever more important to help ensure everybody enjoys their football in the safest of environments. Helston Athletic Football Club are therefore pleased to share that it was recently awarded an England Football Accredited Club 3* rating. The award reflects the club’s commitment to the future of football within our local community.

As always, the club remains extremely grateful for the valuable contributions of the numerous organisations, businesses and volunteers who continue to support us. Without your individual support running a successful football club for all ages would be impossible – thank you.

Finally, we hope you enjoy your visit to Kellaway Park today, so much so that you return very soon.

Here’s to another successful year of footballing action and for all things Helston.

Good Afternoon,

This weekend we switch our attention to The FA Vase as we welcome the players, officials and supporters of The Cobblers of Street FC to Kellaway Park. I guess it is fate that we have been drawn against each other so early in the competition having also gone head to head in the early stages of last seasons FA Cup, although on that occasion at The Tannery Ground.

In addition to our visitors, Helston welcome this afternoons match officials Stephen McCulloch, Scott Coutts and Eric Sleeman to Kellaway Park.

For those who attended last Saturday’s home fixture versus Ilfracombe Town, I hope you eventually enjoyed what I have heard many refer to as the ultimate game of two halves. Trailing by two goals to nil at half-time I think we owe it to the players and coaches on a cracking second half performance. The final score of 5 v 2 ensures we remain in pole position until at least the final day of September.

Hopefully inspired by last Saturday’s second half performance, congratulations to Helston U18’s who on Tuesday made it through to the 2nd Qualifying Round of The FA Youth Cup following an amazing performance against Yeovil Towns U18’s at Huish Park. Winning by three goals to nil has done both club and town proud, well done to all involved. We will host Truro City u-18’s in the Second Round Qualifying. The match is to be played w/c 1st October with a date and kick off time to be confirmed early next week.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome Helston Under 14 Bluebirds (pictured) as our mascots this afternoon. Since joining Helston Athletic Youth back in 2017 as U8’s the team now compete in the Cornwall Youth Girls U14 League. Having had a successful pre-season the teams league campaign gets underway tomorrow with an away match at Redruth United. Along with all Helston Athletic Youth teams, we wish The Bluebirds all the very best for the new season ahead.

Next Saturday we host unbeaten Barnstaple Town as we again return to Toolstation Western League Premier Division action, KO is at 3:00pm. This league fixture is a must win game so please do join us. If last season is anything to go by our visitors will bring plenty of support.

Thank you all for your attendance this afternoon. We hope whichever team you support, you leave having had an enjoyable time.

The Football Association Challenge Vase, usually referred to as the FA Vase, is an annual football competition for teams playing in Steps 5 and 6 of the English National League System. In the 2017 - 18 season 619 entrants were accepted, with two qualifying rounds preceding the six proper rounds, semi-finals (played over two legs) and final played at Wembley. The 2023 winners were Ascot who beat the previous year’s winners, Newport Pagnell Town, by a goal to nil.

Until 1974, football players were either professionals or amateurs. Professionals were paid to play by their clubs, and the only cup competitions such clubs were allowed to enter were the FA Cup and, after 1969, for clubs outside the Football League, the FA Trophy. Amateurs, on the other hand, were not paid (at least not officially) by their clubs, and such clubs had their own cup competition, the FA Amateur Cup.

In 1974, with many of the top amateur players receiving payment for playing, the Football Association abolished the distinction, scrapped the Amateur Cup and introduced the FA Vase for the majority of clubs who had previously played in the competition. Well over 200 clubs entered in the first season, 1974–75, when Hoddesdon Town beat Epsom & Ewell 2 - 1 in the final at Wembley Stadium in front of a crowd of 9,000.

In recent years, entry to the FA Vase has been restricted to clubs in the ninth and lower tiers of the English football league system. Only five teams have won the FA Vase more than once. Whitley Bay are the only team to win the FA Vase three times in successive seasons, while Billericay town, Tiverton town and Halesowen Town have won back to back titles. Truro City are the only Cornish club to win the competition, in 2007 they came from behind to beat AFC Totton 3 -1 in front of 27,754 spectators.
