Good afternoon everyone, Today, we offer a warm welcome to the players, officials & supporters of visitors Oldland Abbotonians as well as our match officials too. We hope that they all enjoy their brief stay in the village and have a safe journey home too! Oldland will provide us with a tough test this afternoon as they are having their best season in a while. They currently lie third in the league table and last weekend had a thrilling penalty shootout FA Vase victory over Premier Division Helston Athletic. That said, we have collected ten points from our last six matches so today’s match should be a cracker for the neutral. Off the pitch, plans are also moving on to improve the club and take it forward to the next level but also to retain the warm, friendly nature that the club is renowned for. The committee are working hard behind the scenes & over the next few months, much work will be done here at the AVB including a new boiler & housing and better car park facilities. Our big thanks to St Aldhelm’s Youth for fixing the lights on the training area so that all the teams can train up there. Our under-18’s are now five games into their inaugural Bristol u-18 Combination season and are going great guns with four wins and a draw so far. The lads are here tomorrow with a league match against Backwell Athletic, would be great to see some more support for them as they progress with the club. Finally, we have secured a couple of new sponsors who have pledged to have some advertising boards within the ground, one of them being a very well-known name which is fantastic news for a club of our size, more details later. In the meantime, we would ask you to consider using the services of our kind sponsors featured in the matchday programme and also the advertising boards. If you do so, please could you mention that you saw their advert on your visit here to the AVB Stadium. Many thanks and enjoy the match Martin McConachie, Club Secretary

THE HENGROVE 75 In August 2023, Hengrove Athletic Football Club will celebrate its 75th anniversary. Formed shortly after the war by a group of demobbed soldiers, “The Grove” initially played down in Whitchurch then relocated to its current base here at Norton Lane in 1964, gradually moving up the leagues too. We’ve now been a Western League club for fifteen years! To celebrate our 75th birthday, we have put together a group of projects from around the club to take us to the next level on & off the pitch. Four categories; pitch, clubhouse, grounds and structure have been identified and various projects will be repaired, rebuilt, renewed and restored over the next two seasons & we’ve started the tasks already by refurbishing the bar area during the winter. The aim is to make the club more sustainable, more welcoming, smarter, fresher and an even greater place to watch the beautiful game. There’s so many more jobs, large and small, that we will be getting on with including painting, hammering, nailing, building & clearing. There are plans to re-introduce at least one more Hengrove team, bring in several new sponsors, build a new car park and possibly get a big friendly for the anniversary day. If you can offer a service, a pair of hands or your expertise, please see a committee member (listed in front of programme) and let them know. As much of the work as is possible will be done by volunteers & we’d love to see the AVB Stadium look as good as possible ahead of the anniversary. Thank you in advance.

The Cystic Fibrosis Comfort Fund is a small Bristol based charity, independent of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, which aims to help those who suffer from Cystic Fibrosis in their daily lives and enhance their quality of life. It was founded in 1991 by a small group of people from the Bristol Children’s Hospital following a bequest by a grandfather. In his will he stipulated the money should be used to benefit patients with Cystic Fibrosis to help them manage their own lives. There were originally two Trustees from the Children’s Hospital, a senior nurse, and a clinical nurse specialist, two parents, and a lecturer in physiotherapy. The Fund grew from there and it became a registered charity in 1993. Cystic Fibrosis is one of the UK's most common, life-limiting, inherited diseases. Cystic Fibrosis affects the internal organs, especially the lungs & digestive system, by clogging them with thick sticky mucus. This makes it hard to breathe and digest food. Those affected are born with CF and approximately 1 in every 2,500 babies born in the UK will inherit the condition. Improvements in care and treatment mean that more & more babies born with CF will become adults. However, their life expectancy is shortened.

This is a charity supported closely by Andy Stone (Stoner) from AS_FootyReview on Twitter where all profits from his merchandise is donated to the charity to continue helping and raising awareness to a charity close to his heart following the death of his close friend Sam “Syd Brimson” Thank you and enjoy the game!

Focus on.... OLDLAND ABBOTONIANS

2010 was celebrated as Oldland's Centenary Year after Bristol and District League handbooks of the 1920's revealed that the team was founded as St. Anne’s (Oldland) in 1910. St. Anne’s (Oldland) won the GFA Minor Cup at the end of the 1921/22 then lifted the 1925 GFA Junior Cup but had to wait until the 1950's for further success. Little is known about the club's fortunes between the wars but they became founder members of the Bristol Premier Combination in 1962 and were promoted to the Gloucester County League in 1973, remaining there for twelve seasons until being re-elected as Oldland Decora in 1986. Pupils at Hanham Abbots school launched Abbotonians football club as juniors in 1947 and they enjoyed many league and cup successes in the early years, including Cup wins in 1961, 1966 and 1972. The club also won the GFA Intermediate Cup in 1962 and 1969 and the 1968 GFA Minor Cup. It also became the Bristol Churches League Under 16 league winners in 1959 and 1961 and Under 18 league winners in 1960. The two clubs merged in 1998 playing as Oldland Abbotonians in the Somerset Senior League. The late Alan Bush was appointed chairman of the newly merged club. Oldland Abbotonians won the Somerset Senior League Division One in 2004/05, were Premier Division runners up in 2005/06 and eventually promoted to the Toolstation League in 2006/07. Derek Jones has remained with the club ever since and is now Vice Chairman. Lee Gibbs had led the club into the League before passing over to ex-professional David Hillier at the start of the 2008/09 season; Hillier helped them become the first ever Division 1 side to win the Les Phillips (league) cup, securing 7th place in the league as well. Having finished 4th and been assured that promotion was imminent at the end of 2015/16 Oldland were disappointingly not promoted and had to start again with the squad moving away. 2016/17 was a pivotal year as although the football side disappointed, through fundraising and grants the club spent in excess of £70,000 on ground improvements including safety fencing, pitch maintenance equipment, a new stand and CCTV system. In 2017/18 the team were led by Scott Armstrong and for most of 2018/19 by Jon Toy, a former player with a wealth of experience before Clayton Woodman and Steve Cains also returned to the club they had played for.

Focus on.... OLDLAND ABBOTONIANS

These two have stepped into the joint Chairman role from the summer of 2021 with the managers being former coaches Darren Sealey and Paul Weeks plus Kevin Goddard on the coaching side who has brought with him along with a host of new, keen and more importantly, local players. The Reserves are managed by Steve Cains, Craig Durnell and our Somerset Floodlit Under 18s boss Ryan Auchterlonie and from 2018/19 a newly formed adult third team, The Colts, plays in the Bristol & District League, managed by Jamie White assisted by Colin Towler. Oldland has often been described as a nursery for Bristol Rovers with Vic Lambden, Peter Sampson, Brian Bush and Mike Tippets all playing for the club before turning professional at Eastville. Former Rovers favourite Bobby Jones was one of many successful Oldland managers, a list which includes David Hillier. Abbots rose to heady heights under the leadership of Alan Bush in the 1980's with the help of former Rovers players Jeff Meacham, the late Steve Tallboys (Wimbledon) plus Rovers favourites Graham Day, Peter Aitken and Phil Bater. Among other youngsters who left Abbots to play for Rovers were Stuart Taylor, Phil Kite and Kevin Westaway.

Stourbridge did something a little unusual last week. The Southern League Premier Central club appointed Leon Broadhurst and Stuart Pierpoint as joint-managers – something seldom seen in English football. The pair are no strangers at the War Memorial Athletic ground. Broadhurst is the Glassboys’ leading appearance holder with 780 in total while Pierpoint has four fruitful seasons at the club. They’ve been playing Non-League football for 20 years and were both still turning out this season – Broadhurst with Bromsgrove Sporting and Pierpoint at Coalville Town. The popular duo had always said they would go into management together and once Stourbridge approached them it was near impossible to turn down. Their return to the club has brought excitement added to by a 3-0 victory over Lowestoft Town last weekend in their first game in charge, but how will the uncommon approach of being jointmanagers work in the long-term? “We’ve been close friends and played together for many years so we know our skill sets,” Broadhurst told The NLP. “The first training session it fell into place without our different skills. It was brilliant to see how Stu concentrated on one area and I concentrated on another.” Pierpoint added: “We didn’t really verbalise how it was going to work because it’s a learning curve for both of us. There will be different elements we’re probably not aware of at the moment that will come up. But, as Leon said, we do have different skill sets which will benefit us. We have a very similar outlook and similar approach with regards to our expectations and how we see the future. “However, in terms of how we undertake the role we have different traits that we can bounce off each other. It’s all about open communication. We’re not going to agree on everything but that’s great as well.” In the Premier League and Football League there aren’t any managerial partnerships with only Danny and Nicky Cowley coming closest, having worked their way through Non-League, although older brother Danny is officially ‘manager’. Doug Livermore and Ray Clemence were once first-team bosses at Tottenham Hotspur but both were soon axed before Gerard Houllier and Roy Evans took charge of Liverpool in 1998, and Evans quickly resigned. There are plenty of successful examples outside of the EFL. Chester bosses Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley have won five promotions together at Ramsbottom United and Salford City while Neil Baker and Jon Underwood have taken Slough Town from Step 4 to National League South. Carl Withers and Jamie McClurg led Binfield to last season’s FA Vase final and promotion from Step 5. Rick Andrews and Angelo Harrop, in their short time in charge of AFC Sudbury this year, reached the FA Cup first round proper and are going well in the Isthmian League North. Broadhurst and Pierpoint have the makings of another successful duo as more Non-League clubs will be asking themselves, is two better than one?

Hengrove Athletic Club History

Hengrove Athletic F.C was formed in 1948 from players who were demobbed from National Service. As a footnote, there is also wartime history to the club colours of green and white. With rationing and many shortages, football shirts were virtually unobtainable, so all of the members of Hengrove Athletic F.C donated an ordinary white shirt and a mother of one of the players kindly dyed them green in the bath at her Knowle home. The colour green had no symbolic meaning. It was the only colour available at the time! The founding fathers of Hengrove Athletic F.C then agreed to retain these colours for the new club. A successful application was made to join the Bristol and Suburban League and they were placed in Division 3 for the start of 1948/49 season. A Reserve XI was established in 1950 and in the same year Hengrove Hall was rented for club meetings and social gatherings. The club continued to expand and the ‘A’ XI started in 1953, followed by the 30-plus XI in 1959. These four football teams made Hengrove Athletic F.C the largest club in the Bristol and Suburban League at the time – after just eleven years. A ‘B’ XI replaced the 30 plus in 1962. The long search for a ground came to fruition on Sunday 7 June 1964 when Norton Lane was officially opened and Hengrove Athletic F.C took up residence. The first XI was accepted by the Somerset Senior League for the 1974/75 season, where they remained until 2005/06 when they were runaway, unbeaten, Premier Division Champions and joined the Western League for the start of the 2006/07 season. Our Floodlights and Stand were installed at the ground in 2007/08 to achieve the necessary ground grading of the Western League. The EWW Stand was installed at the ground in 2012/13 to achieve the necessary ground grading of entry into the FA Cup and future possible promotions. The first XI finished runners-up in Western League Division One in 2012/13, achieving promotion to the Premier Division. They also lifted the Les Phillips League Cup (Western League) in 2015/16 before winning promotion to the Premier Division again the following season. In 2017/18 under new manager John Durbin, the club finished ninth in the Premier Division, their highest ever position and as a result, were also the highest placed Bristol side in the division. However, this was followed by relegation back to Division One in 2018/19. Jamie Hillman returned for a third spell as manager in the summer of 2019 but the next two seasons failed to play to a finish due to the COVID pandemic. In both seasons, the Grove finished in mid table.
