Martin McConachie (Club Secretary)

The reserves kicked off their Suburban League 2022/23/ season with a 4 1 defeat at Almondsbury before last Saturday’s matches were of course postponed. Once again, many thanks to everyone that bought a programme at our last match against Bristol Telephones. It means we have now sold out four times this season which is a big difference to last season. With Hamdon Media kindly sponsoring the programme this season, every £1 goes back into the club to keep us going so thank you once again. Finally, your support at games is very welcome and you’ve certainly come in your numbers this season as we average over 100 for home games. After today, we make the short trip to Oldland before embarking on three successive home games against Lydney Town (FA Vase), FC Bristol and Radstock Town (League). Enjoy the game!

By the time you read this, our under 18’s will have got their Western Counties Floodlight Youth League season up and running against, of all teams, Portishead Town! It is a completely new team this year that will be managed by Alex Sully and Damian Chilcott; we’d like to officially welcome not only both coaches but all the new young lads and their families to what is one of the friendliest clubs around.

Good afternoon everyone, Today, we offer a warm welcome to the players, officials & supporters of visitors Portishead Town Football Club as well as our match officials too. We hope that they all enjoy their brief stay in the village and have a safe journey home too. We can’t really go much further with this column without mentioning the very sad loss of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II last week at the age of 96. Her Majesty was a regular at Cup Finals over the years and during her seven decades on the throne, she presented England captain (Sir) Bobby Moore with the Jules Rimet Trophy at Wembley in 1966. As a result, all games last weekend were postponed as a mark of respect. Rest in peace, your Majesty!

1948 2023

To celebrate our 75th birthday, we have put together a group of projects from around the club to take us to the next level on & off the pitch. Four categories; pitch, clubhouse, grounds and structure have been identified and various projects will be repaired, rebuilt, renewed and restored over the coming season & we’ve started the tasks already by refurbishing the clubhouse & bar area.

In August 2023, Hengrove Athletic Football Club will celebrate its 75th anniversary. Formed shortly after the war by a group of demobbed soldiers, “The Grove” initially played down in Whitchurch then relocated to its current base here at Norton Lane in 1964, gradually moving up the leagues too. We’ve now been a Western League club for seventeen years!

If you can offer a service, a pair of hands or your expertise, please see a committee member (listed in front of programme) and let them know. As much of the work as is possible will be done by volunteers & we’d love to see the AVB Stadium look as good as possible ahead of the anniversary. Thank you in advance.

The aim is to make the club more sustainable, more welcoming, smarter, fresher and an even greater place to watch the beautiful game. There’s so many more jobs, large and small, that we will be getting on with including painting, hammering, nailing, building & clearing. There are plans to bring in several new sponsors, build a new car park and possibly get a big friendly for the anniversary day.

Following major ground improvements and finishing the 2004/05 season as runners up in the Somerset County League the Club applied for election to the Western League and were duly promoted for the start of the 2005/06 campaign.

A year later a junior side was formed. In 1915 Molly married the Rev.H.S.Briggs but her interest and devotion to ‘the lads’ didn’t waver and, despite the intervention of two world wars, she battled on as Chairman, Treasurer and Manager as well as playing in goal as often as she could.

Portishead were inaugurated early in the 1900’s by Molly Jukes, the daughter of a local Rector, who moved to Portishead in 1903. Always keen on sport, Molly formed a cricket side in 1910 and, two years later, a football team she called St, Peter’s Portishead. Initially there were two teams, a First X1 and Reserves.

PORTISHEADon....TOWN

In the early 1950’s Molly stepped down and Portishead AFC, as the Club were now known (following a name change in 1948) was left in the hands of Len Pickering and Eddie ClapFollowingson. successive divisional championships in 1973 and 1974 the Club were accepted into the Somerset Senior League in 1975 and, a year later, moved from their original pitch where the present Health Centre now stands, to Bristol Road. As the result of the extra pitches available on the new ground, two new teams were formed incorporating the former Redcliffe Bay team, In 1995 a Colts side was formed and entered in the Weston & District League along with the third and fourth teams.

Focus

In 1991 92 Portishead reached the Somerset & Avon (South) FA Senior Cup Final where they lost 4 2 against Odd Down. In 1997 the First Team, again, reached the final, this time beating Bridgwater Reserves 2 0 at Paulton, In 1993/94, under the leadership of Terry Hale, the team won the Somerset Senior League Premier Division Championship. They retained this title in 1994/95, made it a treble in 1995/96 and notched up their fourth Championship win at the end of the 1997/98 season, In May 2000, Shaun Hill’s side beat Radstock Town to win the Somerset Senior Cup for the second time.

Chairman of the Western League, John Pool, explained: “Think of a Fan was our way of remembering that for many fans, football is more than just a game. It’s an important release, a chance to meet friends, get out of the house and have some fun.

Non-League Footballers Mental Health Championed by Bath Mind and the Toolstation Western League

The Toolstation Western League are working with Bath Mind to pilot a mental health partnership supporting the football family and players in particular. The six Western League sides located in Bath and North East Somerset have been offered specially created posters, promoting mental health support services designed to help younger people, which can be located into their home and away changing rooms.

Many people are still working through the loneliness and anxiety caused by lockdown, but we must not forget that our players are no different. They are as important to us as any members of our football family and this important partnership with Bath Mind is our way of supporting them.”

this pilot we hope to encourage everyone to talk about their mental health, seek help at an early stage and reduce the stigma associated with mental ill health. As a local, independent charity, Bath Mind relies heavily on local fundraising to keep our services going, therefore we are grateful to The Toolstation Western League and their fans for their fundraising efforts.”

As well as changing room posters, Bath Mind have provided leaflets for fans, as well as programme adverts, highlighting the variety of support services they provide. If successful, this initial pilot will be extended by the Western League to cover all 40 Clubs across the South West of England, from Cornwall to Wiltshire.

Research conducted by the Toolstation Western League earlier this season highlighted that around a quarter of players had considered seeking help with a mental health issue. The subject of mental health was first tackled by the Western League in March 2020, when they launched their Think of a Fan campaign.

Hannah Roper, Director of Business Development at Bath Mind, said: “We at Bath Mind are thrilled to be working in partnership with The Toolstation Western League, to support and promote positive mental health for the football community. Throughout the pandemic Bath Mind has been fighting an epidemic of mental ill-health. We have increased our services to meet the growing needs of our community, and help reduce pressure on NHS ser-

There were originally two Trustees from the Children’s Hospital, a senior nurse, and a clinical nurse specialist, two parents, and a lecturer in physiotherapy. The Fund grew from there and it became a registered charity in 1993.

Cystic Fibrosis is one of the UK's most common, life limiting, inherited diseases. Cystic Fibrosis affects the internal organs, especially the lungs & digestive system, by clogging them with thick sticky mucus. This makes it hard to breathe and digest food. Those affected are born with CF and approximately 1 in every 2,500 babies born in the UK will inherit the condition. Improvements in care and treatment mean that more & more babies born with CF will become adults. However, their life expectancy is

supported closely by Andy Stone (Stoner) from AS_FootyReview on Twitter where all profits from his merchandise is donated to the charity to continue helping and raising awareness to a charity close to his heart following the death of his close friend Sam “Syd Brimson”

The Cystic Fibrosis Comfort Fund is a small Bristol based charity, independent of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, which aims to help those who suffer from Cystic Fibrosis in their daily lives and enhance their quality of life. It was founded in 1991 by a small group of people from the Bristol Children’s Hospital following a bequest by a grandfather. In his will he stipulated the money should be used to benefit patients with Cystic Fibrosis to help them manage their own lives.

WESTERN LEAGUE RECORD SEASON BY SEASON

Here at the club, the last few seasons have been very successful and as a result, we are looking for people to join the team. Not the one ON the pitch that has won two promotions and a Les Phillips Cup in the last ten years but the one OFF IT; the team behind the team if you like.

Hengrove Athletic Football Club is renowned within the local leagues and amongst match officials for offering a warm, friendly welcome and top notch hospitality. The ground itself, the AVB Stadium, is pleasant and offers superb views of Bristol as well as the peace and quiet of the country. It’s a lovely place to watch a game of football!

We are looking for anyone that feels they can make a contribution to the club. On matchdays, it could be serving refreshments and food, selling raffle tickets, working on the front gate or helping to tidy up after the game. You’ll get to watch the football free of charge of course but better still, you’ll be joining a small team of dedicated hard working volunteers that make this club very special.

On non matchdays, there are other jobs that need doing such as strimming, painting, cleaning, weeding and brushing. You name it, we need to do it! However with only a small band of willing helpers, we can always do with a little more help, no matter how many hours you can give up. If you feel this is you, please email the chairman Mike Greatbanks at michael.greatbanks@btconnect.com or call him on 07884 492217. And thank you!

Supporting the club...

There are several more ways of getting your company name out there that we can help you with. Perimeter banners, perimeter boards, programme advertising, website advertising.. they are all available within the club.

Programme Advertising has also proven popular in recent seasons. After having “gone online” in recent seasons, the club have decided to go back to printing a copy for its supporters, a popular move with many non league fans too.

Perimeter Boards are one option that many companies have chosen recently. Match action pictures often appear online either on websites or social media so your company board could be seen regularly as well as those who attend the match.

Perimeter boards cost £250 for the first year (including a one off manufacturing charge of £100) then cost £100 a year thereafter.

Website Advertising is the cheapest form of advertising and is just £25. For this, your link/logo will sit on a carousel on the front page and when visitors click the link, it will take them to your website. Our club website is one of the most popular ones in the league with more than 2,000 unique visits each week during the season.

Perimeter Banners are a similar option but made from a hard wearing fabric. The same size as a board (2.4m x 915mm or 8’ x 3’), they cost £200 (including a one off manufacturing charge of £75) then cost £100 a year thereafter.

Advertising costs just £100 for a full page (A5) or £50 for a half page; this is for a full season of matchday programmes so this season, at least 21 programmes. You can change the composition of the programme each week to keep it topical and/or time sensitive!

The first XI finished runners up in Western League Division One in 2012/13, achieving a promotion to the Premier Division. They also lifted the Les Phillips League Cup (Western League) in 2015/16 before winning promotion to the Premier Division again the following season. In 2017/18 under new manager John Durbin, the club finished ninth in the Premier Division, their highest ever position and as a result, were also the highest placed Bristol side in the division. However, this was followed by relegation back to Division One in 2018/19.

Hengrove Athletic Club History

Hengrove Athletic F.C was formed in 1948 from players who were demobbed from National AsService.afootnote,

The first XI was accepted by the Somerset Senior League for the 1974/75 season, where they remained until 2005/06 when they were runaway, unbeaten, Premier Division Champions and joined the Western League for the start of the 2006/07 season. Our Floodlights and Stand were installed at the ground in 2007/08 to achieve the necessary ground grading of the Western League. The EWW Stand was installed at the ground in 2012/13 to achieve the necessary ground grading of entry into the FA Cup and future possible promotions.

Jamie Hillman returned for a third spell as manager in the summer of 2019 but the next two seasons failed to play to a finish due to the COVID pandemic. Last season, 2021/22, did get completed and for the third year running, the Grove ended in mid table.

there is also wartime history to the club colours of green and white. With rationing and many shortages, football shirts were virtually unobtainable, so all of the members of Hengrove Athletic F.C donated an ordinary white shirt and a mother of one of the players kindly dyed them green in the bath at her Knowle home. The colour green had no symbolic meaning. It was the only colour available at the time! The founding fathers of Hengrove Athletic F.C then agreed to retain these colours for the new club.

A successful application was made to join the Bristol and Suburban League and they were placed in Division 3 for the start of 1948/49 season. A Reserve XI was established in 1950 and in the same year Hengrove Hall was rented for club meetings and social gatherings. The club continued to expand and the ‘A’ XI started in 1953, followed by the 30 plus XI in 1959. These four football teams made Hengrove Athletic F.C the largest club in the Bristol and Suburban League at the time after just eleven years. A ‘B’ XI replaced the 30 plus in 1962. The long search for a ground came to fruition on Sunday 7 June 1964 when Norton Lane was officially opened and Hengrove Athletic F.C took up residence.
